Actually now curious to know who or which group of people were behind the well regarded high performance Peugeots (along with the good handling of the regular models), presumably they must have mostly moved on to Renault at some point during the late-80s to early/mid-90s.
The funny thing is it's not inaccurate. Peugeot just realised they could make more money of bad cheap cars sold though finance initiatives than they could off making good reasonably priced cars. It's also why modern Peugeot drivers are bad drivers, they don't care about driving so they don't care about cars, so they just get the cheapest car with the best finance deals, a Peugeot.
According to Richard Porter (the guy next to Jeremy) they had done multiple takes of the meeting scene and they were all chugging the wine throughout filming so they were all really quite hammered by the end of it

I had a 1.6 litre Peugeot 306 before that which I thought was great apart from the interieur terrible! I never bonded with that 1.4 litre 206 though. You'd pull out to overtake and then pull back in again! I can't remember doing any long drives in it as I never trusted it to get me anywhere! Glad to get rid of it! The cars I've had since haven't been that much more reliable but at least they have been fun while they lasted!

it is true. to this day, I still miss my horrible 206. it was slow, I could barely climb the mountains in my hometown and it regularly broke down. but i love it because it was a great car for whatever reason.

An entry level car should still be viable i.e. Ford Fiesta, holds at least one world record, used for rally cross obviously modified. But even the non racers are nice for their low price. Glad to own a last generation 306 - even in the regular slow version you can feel that the suspension is a masterpiece, the engineers thought of quality solutions and it's shape comes from Pininfarina after all. But what followed is just pure automotive massacre in design, reliablity and prestiege.

My car is a bordeaux 2019 Peugeot 2008 SUV. I really like it, having for me a great compromise between internal space, and exterior design - especially because my car has that "Slasher smile" grille (used on many Peugeots until late 2019) that I absolutely love!! Also, it is comfortable to drive and agile in traffic. And, my father owns a 2011 Peugeot 3008, a model like the one at 2:25 except gray, and I've driven it occasionally. It is a nice, spacious and comfortable crossover, but what I love the most is the front seats. The driving seat is so comfortable that it's like driving a living room rather than a car. Both cars had no significant reliability problems - mine is almost new so it's obvious, I guess 😅. My dad's 3008 only had replacements for normally deteriorating components (tires, lights, brake pads, and oil changes). They may not be sport cars (recently the new 3008 starred in the Dakar race, however), but they do their job superbly. Of course, it makes sense that the Top Gear boys long the most for Peugeot's 80s/90s sport heritage.
5008 was not that horrific. I really want to know what the Peugeot 607 designer was on when he looked at his work and said: "Yes, this gorgeous shape will definitely allure those who are supposed to buy Audi A6, BMW 5 series or Mercedes E class!"
Actually, Clarkson is overexaggerating here. With the 3008 and 5008, Peugeot started making better better cars. The interior quality went up significantly, at least. The 308 and 508 are both decent cars, but they're simply not as good as the Opel / Vauxhall Astra and Insignia, both of which sit at the top of their class right now. The interesting thing is that Peugeot, making these inferior cars, purchased Opel recently from GM, just as it started to prosper under them. I think Peugeot will ruin Opel.
Same goes for Citroen in the 90's. Allors messieurs, up till now we `ave made great voitures like le CX, la DS, le 2CV and le GS. Mais now we will fabricate automotive horreurs comme le ZX and le Xsara, which will be just as horrible comme le Chrysler/Talbot/Simca, that went bust, so that we can snatch away their former customeurs from Renault. Mais oui, tres bien, une idee excellent!

The same happened with the entire Indian automobile industry in the 80’ and the 90’s all manufactures came together and decided to sell dustbins on wheels. Cars sold here came without left side mirrors or rear seat belts just to get you started on how terrible it was. Progress till 2017 is kind of 5% better. We get ‘abs’ and ‘power steering’ stickers on our cars now.

I don't really know how many people out there have actually owned a Peugeot but our family have had 4 of them. A Peugeot 405 GLD 2 litre turbo diesel, a Peugeot 106 Xsi, Peugeot 206 SW 1.4 litre and a Peugeot 205 GLD 1.8 litre and I one of things we certainly COULDN'T really level against the French car manufacturer was "uncomfortable". In fact, certainly in the 405 it was probably the most practical and comfortable. Tons of room inside, huge boot space for a saloon car. The road handling system on the 405 was just brilliant and of course the diesel burned at a much slower rate than petrol engines and great If you were stuck in traffic. The 405 was a fantastic car that my Dad had firstly as a company car for 4.5 years but then bought it off the company at the end of the lease period and kept it in the family for another 9 years.
I may have watched this scene about thirty times over the years, but this is the first time I noticed Richard Porter's (Sniff Petrol) cameo in the meeting!!

Glad to own a last generation 306 - even in the regular slow version you can feel that the suspension is a masterpiece, the engineers thought of quality solutions and it's shape comes from Pininfarina after all. But what followed is just pure automotive massacre in design, reliablity and prestiege.

My car is a bordeaux 2019 Peugeot 2008 SUV. I really like it, having for me a great compromise between internal space, and exterior design - especially because my car has that "Slasher smile" grille (used on many Peugeots until late 2019) that I absolutely love!! Also, it is comfortable to drive and agile in traffic.
And, my father owns a 2011 Peugeot 3008, a model like the one at 2:25 except gray, and I've driven it occasionally. It is a nice, spacious and comfortable crossover, but what I love the most is the front seats. The driving seat is so comfortable that it's like driving a living room rather than a car.
Both cars had no significant reliability problems - mine is almost new so it's obvious, I guess 😅. My dad's 3008 only had replacements for normally deteriorating components (tires, lights, brake pads, and oil changes). They may not be sport cars (recently the new 3008 starred in the Dakar race, however), but they do their job superbly. Of course, it makes sense that the Top Gear boys long the most for Peugeot's 80s/90s sport heritage.

5008 was not that horrific. I really want to know what the Peugeot 607 designer was on when he looked at his work and said: "Yes, this gorgeous shape will definitely allure those who are supposed to buy Audi A6, BMW 5 series or Mercedes E class!"
Actually, Clarkson is overexaggerating here. With the 3008 and 5008, Peugeot started making better better cars. The interior quality went up significantly, at least. The 308 and 508 are both decent cars, but they're simply not as good as the Opel / Vauxhall Astra and Insignia, both of which sit at the top of their class right now.
The interesting thing is that Peugeot, making these inferior cars, purchased Opel recently from GM, just as it started to prosper under them. I think Peugeot will ruin Opel.

The same happened with the entire Indian automobile industry in the 80’ and the 90’s all manufactures came together and decided to sell dustbins on wheels.
Cars sold here came without left side mirrors or rear seat belts just to get you started on how terrible it was.
Progress till 2017 is kind of 5% better. We get ‘abs’ and ‘power steering’ stickers on our cars now.

I don't really know how many people out there have actually owned a Peugeot but our family have had 4 of them.
A Peugeot 405 GLD 2 litre turbo diesel, a Peugeot 106 Xsi, Peugeot 206 SW 1.4 litre and a Peugeot 205 GLD 1.8 litre and I one of things we certainly COULDN'T really level against the French car manufacturer was "uncomfortable".
In fact, certainly in the 405 it was probably the most practical and comfortable. Tons of room inside, huge boot space for a saloon car.
The road handling system on the 405 was just brilliant and of course the diesel burned at a much slower rate than petrol engines and great If you were stuck in traffic.
The 405 was a fantastic car that my Dad had firstly as a company car for 4.5 years but then bought it off the company at the end of the lease period and kept it in the family for another 9 years.
