- Neil Young performing at Live Aid in front of 100,000 people in the John F. Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia USA on the 13th July, 1985. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Back in 1985 I recorded this when it was live on television. What's an unusual about that, is, that I was watching it on an old 13 inch black and white television. Remember, this was 1985, no internet yet, and not everyone had a VCR. I recorded it thru the earphone jack on the side of the TV by attaching the wires from the plug, to the wires from another earphone size plug which plugged into the microphone jack on my Panasonic stereo with a cassette player built in. It was mono, of course. I had that tape for several years before getting separated from it. This recording sounds slightly better.... I thought somebody out there, as old as I am, might get a kick from this story. Keep in mind I started out back in about 1970 (I was 8 years old) with a Sony reel to reel tape recorder which, back then, was state of the art equipment. The only thing that was really better was maybe, a 4-track tape recorder (those were very pricey even back then!) Needless to say, if you need assistance with any kind of audio equipment, I'm the dude to ask.....
Holy shit what a crowd. I can’t imagine playing in front of that many people wow😮
One of the best songs ever written, minimalistic but powerful lyrics, straight forward chord structure that cuts to the core.
Core? What core?
💔🥲💔🥲💔🥲💔🥲
check out Johnny Cash’s cover of trent reznor’s (lead singer for Nine Inch Nails NIN) Hurt….that one is amazing
This song is more relevant now than it was in 1985.
Still has his 70’s sideburns! Hell yeah
Boy could the world use a big concert after the year we've had!
Absolutely!... Just not this guy's. :D
@@fenrirswolh3 I didn't know what you were talking about until I saw the Joe Rogan thing. I thought N.Y. believed in freedom!? F' him!!
The whole point is that he's boycotting spotify which is HIS freedom @@Tacoman1967
@@nldiybop ok we have have a choices to make.
Yeah Canada had the Toronto Rocks concert after SARS in 03 now all we get is inflation. I'm sure there are still starving children in Africa and elsewhere though.
Wow, this song just cuts right thru the spectacle & excess. Neil's voice has never sounded better.
Love your music Neil Young 💜🧡🇬🇧LOVE FROM LIVERPOOL UK
Dang. Liverpool. Cool.
Neil always brilliant Songwriter/Performances
I watched this historic concert from two continents for hours that summer day. One great performance followed another--it was awesome. However, though not a big Neil Young fan, I had one song that really stood out for me when I think back to that summer afternoon--this one. Thanks for sharing--the crowd reaction in the stadium says it all.
Neil, U Bring everything so Real. No one could do this . Remember my Father everytime i hear U
Immense innovative artist: Neil Young
awesome how N.Young bring his strong message to all over the thousands of people... Respect as a musician and as a human... Thanks for sharing !
The BEST!!!! Today is 17/12/2020//// from Belo Horizonte/Brazil
The best version is the first time he sing this ❤
Love you Neil Young
with the Mistral shirt!! ;) fantastic Neil
Funny when I saw this in 1985 I thought it was crap, now I think it's great! Funny how your taste change.
its a great song, but this isnt a great version of it
David Coram, I love your honesty...I've loved Neil since 1980 but felt the same way about many bands that I thought were bogus, but now appreciate, not only for their talent but also for their message. Aging definitely sucks but the upside is, it does bring awareness.
Will always carry the message
loved neil young and csny!
Ah, back when we were all young...and still alive.
Amazing still to this damn day in 2021 🔮
Notice how he never finishes this song ? It doesn't have an ending ..........................................................................
this song is like a drug,
@@napomania Yes , you feel it too .
i have listened to numerous different versions.......this song does not have an ending ............
The ending is sudden and unexpected; such as we live now.
knowing that he was very shy this is very touching I think...
Great cause...one of my favorites❤.
who’s here from 2024
the greatest of all time
Manooo amei esse canal, ,, o UA-cam tinha cancelado o outro canal do live aid ... Qualidade excelente. ..
My God I worry we'll never witness scenes like this and cheers like this EVER AGAIN!
Superbe chanson d'un musicien de légende.
I love it!!
So great love it
PERFECT NEIL
Oh..... I forgot, I also played in a rock and roll band, so, I'm good with Amplifiers as well. There's a trick to playing loud without feeding back, but I'm afraid I can't share that secret with everyone.....
the damage is done
Canadas new national anthem.
Canadian treasure

That fuckin needle !
Neil has the meanest face of all time LOL.
Keep on rockin' in the censored world.
尼尔杨,摇滚唯一老炮!
tried to translate. Seems you are comparing Neil music to Clint Eastwood western movies. Lovin it.
Kinda sounds like a cover of a lost Stooges song
This will be Trudeaus song next election.
What a strange character he is. Did he not have the inner courage to join with Crosby,Stills & Nash on stage for their set? He is a very weird sort of selfish. And he seriously considers himself on par with Dylan! He has a deep-seated need to be the outsider, the rebel. It's interesting that he now denounces what he stood for at one time (re:Joe Rogan). He has a severe case of self-importance. Neil, the "artiste", thrives on creating conflicts. I wonder why...
Iconoclast! Wow!
This song was dedicated to Crosby stills and nash who were certainly listening. It’s a cover of a song about addiction that means something else to Neil Young. To him it represents that he left his band and the damage was indeed done. He was the needle. Not even for live aid could there be a reconciliation.
@@alexmedved2623 this is Neil’s song and not a cover
Isn't he the same guy that pushed the POISON SHOTS?
Great song, inspired me to try heroin.
Arsehole you are. As Freud said, "grow up".

Looks like you are the one that needs to grow up, since you can't get a simple joke...
@@MrFloyd-te1nh my apologies. Nephew died doing it.

i hope that was a joke i guess if you havent OD yet say hey
Don't take the clot shot
What NEEDLE is HE talking about, THE POISON SHOTS everybody took in 2 0 2 1?
Bob geldolf scammed the world, not 1grain of rice was given.
If that's true, I would be incredibly sad. I would like to see evidence of that...especially after all the artists heartfelt performances.
very little of that money actually got to the african people!
Remember these days when everything was white and right ?
