I wonder how many people listen to this song without understanding that it's written from the viewpoint of a man who's reflecting on his marriage from beyond the grave and realizing that it's too late to change the kind of man he was.
I wish I was stronger...I wish I loved Jesus the way my wife does...(Oh Patsie...I loved you so much...like all fools I learned late what love was...and like Ground Hog Day...I remember each failure...never to recover a love I lost...)
Not sure how many listeners know what an amazing composition this is, how it reverberates into so many country music recordings entitled "Top of the World." If you are listening, Miss Songbird, you are beloved.
I am getting blessed with seeing her perform live in two months. I don’t know if I can listen to this song without having a full breakdown, but I am READY.
My favourite song of all time. And I'm a Joni Mitchell fan. What a legend. I also adore " when it don't come easy". Patti, Brandi Carlile and Joni.. add some Annie Lennox and I'm a happy man!
Quanti nostri artisti possono raggiungere, l'espressività di questa grande artista:due chitarre ed una voce=un'orchestra di suoni ed emozioni incompsrabili
Honestly that's the case with like 90% of her songs. The woman makes nothing but masterpieces but my God if they don't just rip every ounce of joy right out of your soul and leave you in a puddle of tears by the time they're over 😭 Absolute legend!
Patty is amazing here and this is an amazing song. Dixie Chicks certainly gave the song there all and it's one if the few times a cover certainly matched or added to the original in a way that serves the song.
I've always heard it as "I don't have to answer any of these questions, don't have no GOD to, teach me no lessons" but lyrics list it as Guide not God. Thoughts?
I went to Patty's Portland Maine show last year -- and something was very wrong (either she was not feeling well or the stage feedback sound was faulty because her voice was grossly out of tune -- which I never expected! And it continued throughout her show. I love RAIN -- and wish I didn't hear it that night, it was so off-tune. I'm thinking of going to the Boston show -- because there must have been a reason her sound was so off! I definitely need a 're-do'! I listen to her CD's all the time...
If you find yourself relating to the song, perhaps do the work and explore yourself, your personal history; talk to your parents while they're still living. I hope you find your closure in time.
No. They didn't. This song along with Truth N 2 was supposed to be included in a Patty's record around 2000-2001 but because of some problems with the label the album was delayed around 11 years. in the meantime around 2002-2004 some copies of that record were distributed and the Chicks (Previously called the Dixie Chicks) heard Patty and decided to grab some of the unreleased material and included in their Home album. obviously Patty approved it. after the hard time she was going through she took the chance to let her songs to be known even if it meant to be released by someone else first and then by her some day. People still believes Patty covered the Chicks when was kind of the opposite.
Lordy, I love her. What a remarkable talent.

Patty Griffin is an absolute treasure.
Patty, you are one of today's greatest song writers!

One of the great singers and songwriters...
Raw honesty. Tragically beautiful.
This song is like a beautiful gut punch. Been singing along with it for 18+ years.
She is beautiful. Like Martina McMbride.
❤️❤️
Couldn't have said it better!
@@pattygriffin3232 i really hope that was you
So much truth. Up To The Mountain is another that makes me sob and sing.

When It Don't Come Easy is without a doubt my favorite of hers. Probably listened to that song hundreds of times and never get tired of it.
4:08 I felt that in my gut. Musical genius.
Patty Griffin is a living legend.
Wow....this song brought forward some feelings I buried...
Patty Griffin is a powerful and beautiful truth teller. I’ve always loved this song! ❤

Patty is the loveliest of all the great American women performers/songwriters...and there are many...she touches my soul...
So personal. So beautiful. Sincere.
Everyone's goal should be to never have to relate to this song.
Beautifully haunting, but sad.
Honestly that's the case with like 90% of her songs. The woman makes nothing but masterpieces but my God if they don't just rip every ounce of joy right out of your soul and leave you in a puddle of tears by the time they're over 😭 Absolute legend!
Devastatingly something. Gorgeous. Sad. Truthful.
I absolutely love Patty Griffin 🌈💜♥️

Kelly clarkson did a pretty great version as well
Damn, this is good
Love
she's brilliant
Think it's Buddy Miller
wow!
Sure a beautiful sad song . Btw never heard this song until they did a cover on the voice!
The dixie chicks covered it on the album "Home" along with another Patty Griffin song "truth #2
Ugh 🤦♂️
I've always heard it as "I don't have to answer any of these questions, don't have no GOD to, teach me no lessons" but lyrics list it as Guide not God. Thoughts?

This is an excellent recording!!! What would it take to get her to do a live recording of “Florida” in this studio? I’ve still got a soul I can sell.
Found my way to Patty by way of Natalie, Emily, and Marnie. Any road I guess.
Emmylou was my way to this amazing artist ❤
does anyone know what show this was from? I would love to see the whole performance!
I wish I did It would complete my PATTY GRIFFIN collection.......
Is the performance for this channel: ua-cam.com/video/kFXgcFTUZtE/v-deo.html
Could you list the other guitarist please? And say where this clip is from?

Maybe that's why the angels told Lot and his wife not to look back. I wish I was smarter... Longing for wisdom, life moves forward even in death.

💜
Agreed. she is my hero for singing, songwriting, performance. Sometimes she drifts off pitch and that is cringy, but it's rare.
I love this performance. Nitpicking, I know, but why breathe in the middle of "without" and "somehow"?
Her own timing,phrasing perhaps.
@@copperdiablo2717 Peace, brother. Singing 101. Never breath in the middle of a word.
It's a pretty song but its also a weird song. The timing and the lyrics are like what is that?
The Dixie Chicks originally did this
Maybe but Patty Griffin wrote it.
I know you did not just compare the Dixie Chicks with Patty Griffin.
No. They didn't. @@Ramx26x is correct. The album "Silver Bell" was recorded in 2000 but it wasn't released until 2013.
Just like how Nine Inch Nails covered Johnny Cash's, Hurt i guess too, right - smh......
Brilliant.
