Sitting in my truck in front of my barn balling my eyes out, jesus, her voice!
Patty's been my favorite performer since I heard her on the radio in the middle of the night on a lonely highway more than twenty years ago. Her music has broken my heart plenty of times. This song devastated me so much I needed time, actual time, before listening to it again. No one captures the light and dark of humanity like she does.

Patti G....
saddest and best song ever about poor unwanted dogs. patty griffin is a true gem for writing this song.
"It's lonely on the highway
Sometimes a heart can turn to dust
Get whittled down to nothing
Broken down and crushed
In with the bones of Wild old dogs"
Pure Genius that Patty is.
No one can dispute this talent
However, l wrote many of her lovely renders…
I’m happy to say…
I wrote this I’m also happy to acknowledge
I’ve also made the aforementioned drives
That is one heartbreaking song. Not often will a song bring you to tears but that one does.
Nobody cared about that wild old dog but you did, and wrote a song in his memory. Thank you for being such a beautiful soul. ♥
Best songwriter ever imho
Heartbreaking..the song..the poor dogs who are abandoned . Rotten people with no heart, no conscience..what a world we live in.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it.
Heartbreaking metaphor for many discarded people. RIP Anthony...I'm sorry. Peace forever. I think of you everyday, my brother.
This is the saddest song I've ever heard. So good.
This song always makes me cry. The scenery she depicted in this piece is so vivid and clear that hits me to my heart. It makes me feel like I was sat in that car, right next to her, looking at the sunset and following that running old dog with my eyes. ❤😢
You were in the car ,I was in the pickup truck right in back of you........
I love you even more after hearing this amazing tune Patti!🌹🌹🌹
Sometimes I share Patty Griffin songs with the people but I work with late at night and then the next day I pretend to have made a mistake. I say oops that wasn't meant for you but it was meant for them and if they listen to it then I have made a difference. I love Patty Griffin she's my hero.
Well your an idiot.
glad I found this performance. Nice to know what this great song was about. Looking forward to a new album from Patty in a couple of day!
So heartbreaking. I can’t imagine doing that to that to a poor dog. And the way she expresses the dogs pain is haunting & tragic. You just want to cry.
Nobody can touch Patty solo. True greatness.
Saw Patty twice in the UK this year - amazing voice - hope she comes back!
What a theologically vibrant song. She is THE BEST EVER.
Way better song than what's out there on the top ten hits, it has meaning, a story and emotion.
omg... i drive the same way and have experienced such similar things driving to and fro from College Station to Nashville & NE Arkansas
Heartbreakingly true. I cried.
im not even sure clapping is the right response to this... holy shit... that's one of the most hardcore songs about humanity ever.
Amen.
My favorite song from American Kid. I love a lot of them, but this one is my favorite.
good lord, patty griffin is talented..... turning the heinous treatment of dogs into such a beautiful song is amazing.
"when Willie kicked him with his shoe he just climbed on in, just like he knew" always hits me right in the gut. Imagining some poor old dog that's going blind that knows what's happening and still climbs up into the truck anyway kills me. This Willie guy sounds like a psychopath.
You’re not getting the gist
And you sound like might be carrying a bit of mange…?
There's nothing to "not get." He kicked the dog telling him to get in the truck so that he could drive him into the country and abandon him by the side of the road. She's explained what the song was about multiple times. Abandoned dog running through a field as a tornado barrells past.
@@lance694 which solicits more surprise that you still don’t get the mangy old thing wouldn’t get in the car without some coaxing… some people can’t think through reality…?
@@lance694 I wrote it regardless what you think has been explained for you…
Patty: belting out songs conjured from personal experience with every ounce of her high-heel foot-stomping rock n' roll soul.
Reality.
Bliss.
When I hear this song, I think of;
- Prince.
- Princess- Jabar- Prissy- Sam- Awker- Ellie- Emily- Elwood- Uno- Chloe- Chip- Dale- So many othersTheir memories are burned in my mind, the pain I felt knowing they were dumped and left to fend for themselves. We took them in the best we could, though some we couldn't keep.
Thank you, Patty, for having such a heart of gold that you'd write a song to those poor rejected souls.
bless you, refugee--i,m a keeper of lost dogs--i;ve lost count--somewhere around 20--at 74 i hope someone takes me home if i get lost. Arthur.
As the three-time owner of abandoned dogs, I'm an easy sap for this song.
YOU ARE George Jones' best backup singer of all time :) !!! I was so inspired by your show at the Fillmore / SF, you sparkled. So spooky + wise in a way that felt personal; damn vulnerable. This song feels like faith, loss + really looking hard.
How the hell can someone "be done with" a dog?
People like that make me fear for our future.
So sad.
You see one, you grab him/her. I found one like this in Phoenix in 1991, milling around construction site for the Squaw Peak Parkway. Black spaniel boy full of spirit.
Would like to know how some people can live with themselves, leave alone other creatures. So sad for that dog. Thanks, Patty.
En plus de cette chanson qui est magnifique c'est cette voix qui accroche
👍🇺🇸❤I love dogs, cool tune.
Christ this is sad as shit. I love her songs.
Wow, alot of insight.¡!?
A hymn to disillusionment.
Wild Old Dog
Patty Griffin
God is a wild old dog
Someone left out on the highway
I seen him running by me
He don't belong to no one now
Dropped him out on 93
Mange was setting in on his hips and on his knees
Between the highways running north and south
We pulled on over and we put him out
Willie said he was old and going blind
Momma told me how she didn't mind
When Willie kicked him with his shoe
He just climbed on in just like he knew
God is a wild old dog
Someone left out on the highway
I seen him running by me
He don't belong to no one now
It's lonely on the highway
Sometimes a heart can turn to dust
Get whittled down to nothing
Broken down and crushed
In with the bones of
Wild old dogs
Wild old…
I hate people who are to yellow stripped coward to hang with their dog till the end . I swear I have faith that god will judge these bottom feeder people . How dare they throw such a loyal life away like trash.
oh oh this reminds me of a story I saw on tv where this guy was building fences for his farm and eeeee ran over his dog good grief the poor pup
so he took it home in the back of his truck and gave it a bruial by the good ol oak tree in his big farmyard very sad ......
so the family all grieved and went to bed so sad
anyway the farmer got up at 5 the next day to go to work and lo and behold there was the Dog he buried sitting in front of him wagging his tail ...all dirty and hungry
guess ya keep a good dog down
Completely screwed because it’s a pit
Except Patty she doesn’t suck
şunu dinleyen başka Türk yok ona üzülüyorum
I wrote this
04MSCENTRUM SHE DIDN'T SAVE HIM??????
I love Patty, I really do but lately she sings so sharp sometimes, it kind of puts me off some of her songs... not sure why, I only noticed it on her last CD.
