There's a Dixie Chicks version. I heard that one first before discovering it's Patty's song. And I already love another Patty song, Rain.

I heard this song for the first time when I was driving to the funeral of my estranged alcoholic mother.
It was the first time I was actually able to break down and FEEL what I needed towards my mom.

Hypnotic, haunting. She moves me, makes me think, makes me feel. Thanks, Patty.

This is one of the saddest songs of regret. Don't take for granted the people that are close to you.

Her song "Long Ride Home" is another song of regret. It's about a man returning to his empty home after burying his wife of 40 years. I cry every time I hear it, thinking about how it feels to pull into the driveway and seeing your dark, empty house.

@@magiccitymama1620 Why do we listen to songs that make us shed a tear? I don't know. But I listen to them. I do know I love Patty Griffin's story telling and the way she delivers her songs with her lovely melancholy voice. I don't know anyone as good as Patty at telling a life story in a song or giving a lesson in life. That's one reason why I listen to them, time and again, more than any other artist....and shed a tear along the way. I've noticed it more for me as I have got older. At least it shows we can empathise I suppose.

I saw her perform this at Austin City Limits, a songwriter’s circle featuring her, Emmylou Harris, Buddy and Julie Miller and Dave Matthews. This song was the pinnacle of the evening, she had us in the palm of her hand from the first note. Brilliant song, gifted performer.

I had always loved this song only having heard it from the Dixie Chicks. Started to wonder about its meaning, began to look at Wikipedia about it and low and behold I find this. How is this woman not famous? She wrote an amazing song and has an amazing voice.... I don't understand how it works. All I can figure is its about those who have connections and those who don't and those who capitulate and those who don't?

She's written a lot of amazing songs: When It Don't Come Easy; Let Him Fly; Up to the Mountain; Sweet Loraine; Heavenly Day; Rain... There are many more.
I only recently discovered her too, but I've enjoyed every minute listening to her since.

I can't even find the words to describe what this song does to me. Some how so many years since I had listened to it somehow I was just thinking about this song so I found the CD popped in the car. Good thing I was parked when I listened to it. This has to be one the absolute saddest songs ever written. Patty Griffin is such a song writing genius. And a great performer as well. Sure wish I could have had the opportunity to hear her in concert.

My dad just died last month of kidney failure. He could never do anything right according to my mom. “... wished it had been easier, instead of any longer...i wished i could have stood where you would have been proud” seems like something he would say.
When i first read the lyrics, it said to me he went to his chair and died there...and they called him for supper...and he just stayed right there in his chair...gone. Instead of supper for my dad...it was breakfast. That line broke me. He was gone.
