I really appreciate how you respectfully approach every martial art instead of calling bullshit everywhere.
There are too many people calling BS on arts but the truth is, every art has something good to it, and it's honestly much more rewarding looking at each art with no bias and just understanding why it is the way it is. I'm learning a ton doing these and I'm enjoying them very much.
Agree whole heartedly 👍
"iT wOuLd NeVeR wOrK iN a StReEt FiGhT"

That's because a true martial artist respects all styles.
You forgot to mention that Xingyiquan is based on the spear. A person named Ji Jike was a retired military personnel who wanted to covert his spear techniques into fists, so he came up with Xinyi Liuhe, and then passed down the art to Dai Longbang. Xingyiquan was a modification of Dai family Xinyi Liuhe created by Li Luoneng.
That's crazy but makes sense.
Well done. As a classical acupuncturist and someone who's studied Xingyiquan I think you and Shifu Bluestein did an especially good job describing the Five Phases (Wuxing). Usually folks mangle that concept. I'm also stunned that you went so far as to highlight connections to the stems and branches. Wow.
One thing I would like to note is that not all Xingyi systems distinguish the 12 animals. There are multiple styles of Xingyiquan just like there are multiple styles of Karate.
All credit goes to Shifu Bluestein on this one, he wrote the script and provided all of the material. This episode would not exist without him :)
@@ArtofOneDojo I'm curious- did you use any other sources besides Jonathan Bluestein for this info?
@@descendingdragon5059 Yes, I did a lot of cross referencing and reading on forums for other's opinions and other articles to confirm the material I received. I found it be very consistent (even though there are subtle differences such as the original comment above) but his info is pretty solid.
In my acupuncture school, Stems and Branches are an essential part of diagnosis and treatment. Which school did you go to? ☺
I'm looking for a martial arts to study for mental, spiritual, and physical achievement as I plan on playing sports when i go to college do u have any recommendations?
What a pleasant surprise! I actually studied XingYi for a brief period in college. Got blue belt rank. But very interestingly, the Kyokushin school I just joined is actually big on meridians and the five elements. Very eager to see more!
That is Yi quan, an art which was created in the early 20th century by a XingYi master who fell in love in boxing. He took the meditation and chi kung from Xingyi into western boxing.
Kyokushin is a great style - did it before getting severe asthma. What helped me covercome it was actually
Xingyiquan. But anyway: Kyokushin directly and through Yiquan was much influenced in their fighting
style (fighting stance, kamae) by Xingyiquan - that I've been practicing for more than two decades now.
All the best and respect to all Kyokushin practitioners!
Another fantastic video. Very informative and I can't wait for part 2. I don't know much about XingYiQuan, but I've had a little bit of exposure to it in my Internal class. Definitely going to share this with my Sifus and classmates
Can you do a video on Shaui Jiao since most people don't know that Chinese Kung Fu has grappling
Mario U Comics and Cartoons yes or qin na
I would like to, it's on our very long list :)
Art of One Dojo Yes!
All Kung Fu has grappling and hardly anyone teaches it.
Adam Arb89 yes only reason I know grappling and wrestling is because I learn from shaolin master people think that wrestling is a weakness of gong fu but it’s actually a secret strength.
This is easily one of the best series on UA-cam for me. Has gotten me through some moments and I thank you for it.
My teacher teaches Bagua and Tiger. Due to being the Gao system, he employs elements of Xing Yi. I didnt realize Chinese Muslims made it :)
No, thank YOU for this comment. This is what makes the channel worth doing :)
Do hung gar!!! Please!
Never heard of this style i'm doing research
very nice explanation! i'm a practitioner of xing yi and you really nailed the theoretical side. thank you
I have practiced for close to 12 years now, Sun Xing Yi, Bagua and Tai Chi, along with Tongbei and Shuai Jiao. Its good to see your video, as most people I encounter have rarely if ever heard of these arts.
Dude. You do an incredible job with these. I mean, they should tap you to bring some of your lessons together and extend them for like the history channel or something educational. Great job.
Thank you, I appreciate that :)
John is an awesome and great man.
I’ve learned so much from his teachings over the years and he’s such a wealth of knowledge.
Thank you for doing this.
Great content.💙🙏🏼😎
Another wonderful video Dan 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Very excellent on the coverage on some aspects of Kung fu. Keep these educational and very informative videos coming.
Hsing also means Form.
Mind Intent shaped Form.
But it's not really about preset shapes or form.
It's like spontaneous, in the moment, stream of consciousness drawing.
Thank you for sharing! You are doing a great service to martial arts in general! :)
Loving your vids on the history of different arts
nice vid, I my primary martial art is Wing Chun because I learned it by studying and understanding how to make it practical, I've since branch out studying boxing, and dabling in all the enternal martial arts being taji quan, buagua, and of course Xingyi quan. I found xingyi interesting and I'm still learning it. I have yet to understand it enough to be practical in hand to hand combat, but it has some interesting concepts. All though I must say learning the Xingyi Forms along actually benefited my Wing Chun, because while I was naturally rooting myself with every attack, Xingyi made it more obvious and allowed me to prefect it even more.
can you make one about shaolin kung fu or sanda?
Dear Mr Dan, thank you for the wonderful presentation on Xingyiquan. It is very well presented.
Thank you, but a good amount of the credit goes to Shifu Bluestein :)
This comment is late, but much respect to you for this video, you'd be surprised how many fellow martial artists give you a blank stare when you mention it, that goes double for regular folks. 👍🏾
Can´t wait for part 2! :)
Excellent instructive video, thank you 🙏!
This channel is so awesome. So informative. I still wish I could find out the actual differences between kenpo, karate, and tae Kwon do, not the historical and geographic differences, but the actual technical and conceptual differences
Cool work sir 👏👍
The book of the five rings closely resembles the theory of the five planets. Very cool how so many different cultures idiologies mirror one another. Looking forward to part 2!!! Very cool video Dan! 😁👍
...o.k., now I want you to practice saying Zingy-chuen a thousand times...and shini-uechuen too...and then shini-chuen 😁
I think Shwinn bicycles may have come from the same root idiom (flying two wheeled fist 🤛🚲). 🤪
LOL I hear that word in my sleep now I had to practice it so much! My mouth is not trained for Chinese and not easy for me to say the words lol.
Another great history video! These are always really well put together and I will impatiently await part 2!
A quick note though; the statement about farmers being physically fit already as an explanation of the arts training was a bit of a stretch for me. Usually the poor classes are malnourished and therefore weakened by sickness, etc. In there respective time. I don't know the history but it would make sense to me if they taught it quickly because they are teaching farmers. But I'll admit I don't know the history.
P.S. sorry to nitpick xD
It's in interesting point but most people who studied Chinese Martial arts were poor and lower on the social status. In Japan, studying the martial arts were a luxury for the upper class, but in China it was very different. So farmers were definitely martial artists, but of course those that were strong enough to do it.
Hopefully you enjoy part 2!
@Fight Fly Crow Well, I didn't say it was ONLY the farmers that learned it, but we covered this in "What is Kung Fu?" but in China people typically found training either in temples, villages, and the military. So yes soldiers trained but it wasn't restricted to just them, and the majority of Kung Fu practitioners were civilians. Unlike in Japan, training in the martial arts was a privilege. You didn't find many lower class civilians training in the early days.
@Fight Fly Crow Plus keep in mind there are hundreds of different variations and styles, so it doesn't mean the military trained in the same thing as everyone else. It also depended largely on the region.
When you can, could you make a video called "the main reasons people train in martial arts" because I think that I train for a different reason than many other people think that I train for and that is to someday be a missionary or agent of some sort that martial arts may be leading me to somehow?
Definitely a topic I would consider. I saw you other post about asking different people and see where that tallies up, but that's a little tougher that way. A poll might provide some good inside, and in fact I may throw one up on the community tab for just that reason to see what people say. If there is a good response then I may consider it as a topic for 2020 :)
@@ArtofOneDojosan thank you, many times when I comment on a channels page it seems that as long as a channel has under 300k subscribers, then I am more likely to get a response back from someone whether it is the people of the channel themselves, or someone else commenting. The only other time that I can think of when that did not happen is from Adam Salah Vlogs when I commented on one of his videos and it was not a message from him, but rather it was a woman that would not mind getting into a relationship with him all because of sleeping habits since it was the video about him watching himself sleep to see what he does.
The Poll is up on the community tab :)
Secret agent man lol 😂 🕵🏻♂️
Praying Mantis Kung Fu, Northern and Southern. Please.
Always so respectful of everyone marital art. Oss.
Good choice. Johnathan is a good guy.
Indeed! He did all the hard work of this project :)
Art of One Dojo also Neil Ripski is another good guy. I haven’t talked to him in a while I probably should. Lol
Yueh Fei was also the founder of Eagle Claw Kung fu too.
I’ have xing yi experience. Well done a great primer👍
I need some help. I want to start doing karate and in my city there’s two dojo’s with different styles. One is shotokan and the other is kyokushin. I’m looking for the one that is most effective in a streetfight to protect myself. The shotokan one is closer to me so I have only thought about joining that one so far.
Kyokushin is a very tough style. If you want to be able to tank any punch or kick to your body then go with that. If you're not into that then go for shotokon. Watch sensei Dan's videos on kyokushin history to determine your answer.
Make sure to prioritize your goals and intentions, but I would also suggest visiting both schools and seeing if that can help you make up your mind more easily. No matter the style, it's who you're learning from and who you're training alongside that matter most. Could make up your mind about one style, but maybe the master doesn't give you the right kind of vibe, for example. Good luck!
Thanks to both of you.
Jered Sizemore shotokan is better for self defence and Kyokushin is more for sport but kyokushin is a very tough karate
I should add that I've been doing Kyokushin for the past year and it's really good for conditioning the body. It also seems very practical. I sat in on a Shotokan class before joining and wasn't really feeling it, though like I said it may have just been the group.
Can you do what is Sanda.
BTW I love your channel
That would be a good one
China kickbox
Excellent video!
Thank you! A lot of credit goes to Shifu Bluestein, this episode would not exist without him :)
this awesome history video of art thanks for uploading this
Thank you for watching it! :D
Glad that you made this video, I am also a XingYi practicioner (for more than 1 year) in the far away land in Europe , called Hungary.
I can confirm that what you said covers the truth, and can't wait for the next episode!
Also , could not find the link to the photo at 0:53 , could you please help me out with that ? Totally cool photo which represents some of the stances!
You won't find it online, I took individual illustrations provided to me and I found another background and I made the composite myself for this video.
This is a great video on arguably one of my favorite martial arts period!
I'd like to travel and do a martial arts journey to Asia at some point soon before I get too old to do it. I really like your straight-forward no b.s examination of these different arts.
Thank you, it's honestly more fun looking at them with a blank slate and objective eye :) We learn more that way.
Omfg.
Are you telling me big bang stole that game?!?!
You just blew my mind, and filled it with alot of kungfu info.
You sir get a like and subscribe! Ty
Thank you!
Thank you, this was interesting!
When I've asked martial artist about what style they practiced, many didn't understand what I was asking they thought it was just karate, tai chi chaun, chain, what ever. Never asked a kungfu student but I'm sure they would say shaolin
i do martial arts but not done Kung fu yet. But really want learn Kubg fu always interest me mist when comes to msrtial arts
This is one of the styles I wanna learn
Can you do a review of the Filipino art of Kino Mutai or the art of continuous biting? It is a subset of Dumog.
I really hope to see a video (or several videos) like your Tan Soo Do vs Kenpo series, but for Xingyiquan (or other Kungfu).
Hsing Yi is my favorite art. It’s probably the one Chinese Martial Art that I practice the most even though I know the least. I would love to find a really legit Sifu in the North Carolina area if anyone is out there. I have experience in Chao Family Hsing Yi
great job brother!
Now THAT was cool! And informative beyond measure. Thank You ;-)
As much as I'd love learning this style, there's no schools in my immediate area. Of course, Chinatown in NYC likely has a school. But I live in NJ, & just to get into NYC costs almost $20.00 each time. Then there's the issue of either shelling out money for private parking, or if you're spending almost an hour looking for an empty spot on the streets. I'd spend almost as much money getting to the school as to the tuition itself.
Great vid, maybe in the future you can cover other styles like Bajiquan, Baguazhang, Togbeiquan or Chaquan
very informative , excellent presentation
Great job sir
You must really do your research. I love how thorough you are.
Thanks, though I have to give credit to Shifu Bluestein, he provided the material for this episode and I couldn't have done this without him :)
@@ArtofOneDojo I'm impressed how thorough you are with all your videos. I really enjoy watching Keep up the great work.
Love these ones
amazing video, if you have the time and if you want...
could you do a video about Baji Quan, I would really like this because I really want to learn about this martial arts and I like the way you explain them.
It is an art I am considering, I have a long list to work on :)
Good to hear about Xingyi. On your channel. Bluestein is a good author too
I just would have liked more of martial applications and power generation, which are central to this art. The stuff with the planets is nice, but not directly linked to Xingyi. Except that it is Chinese culture and this people like to add esoteric stuff everywhere. Great historical part, bth
Oh but this is only the first half. Next week is part 2 and we talk more about the techniques and animal forms.
As a Shotokan Karate practitioner, i always wondered wether Xin Yi has had any influence on Gigo Funakoshi, while he was serving as a soldier in china, (alongside with kendo), considering the major changes he made to the art.
This idea of "pushing forward" really seems similar to xin yi.
Am i high or is there a tiny chance?
I think it does. I remember reading shotokan had xingyiquan influences.
is there anyway you can find any information on a kung fu style influenced by bears
Interesting, to my understanding the Bear animal is in a few systems. In fact, XingYiQuan has a bear form as well. Do you have any other information we can search for?
@@ArtofOneDojo regretably not much, I used to work with a fellow that trained in Kung Fu and he said the 'Bear form' was not martial related and was purely for improving physical strength like similar to exercise but not strictly combative, but I have heard others insist that it exists or did exist as it's own style
anyway what I have done is search bear style kung fu and I've found some stuff under qi gong and baugua (sp) but I dunno, I can't help but feel if I could read Chinese I might find more lol
What/which martial art can you learn in a small amount of time?
Excellently and Professionally handled. And represented. I gave you a sub. Thanks ;-)
Do a video on wing chun
It's in the works!
Shifu Jonathan, now that you did a show on Xing Yi Quan, can do another Northern China kung fu call BaJi Quan ( Eight Extreme Fist ) specifically used by Qing Dynasty bodyguards, revolutionary leader Dr. Sun Yat Sen, Chinese leader Mao Ze Dong and Taiwan leader Chiang Kai Shek. Baji Quan is still being taught today in China and Taiwan.
Is the second part to the Xing Yi video up yet? I can't seem to find it.
Part 1 only came out yesterday. Part 2 comes out next Tuesday :) We're still editing it.
Great video 🙂👍
would love to see a bajiquan video!
General Yue Fi also created Eagle Claw Kung Fu.
Cool back ground drawing at introduction.
I would like to hear your opinion of the MMA fighter in China who challenges and beats martial art masters.
jackleg2007 the guy is badass! He is not even a high level mma guy! He exposes frauds! Unfortunately there are alot of charlatans all over the world! People can say whatever they want about the guy... he backs up what he says!
@@carlobella1850 That's the funny part... he's not even very good. Or in good shape. What he shows is that anyone who trains properly to fight for real can beat someone who does not.
Thomas Salmon Exactly! Traditional or not.. must be reality fighting! If you don’t actually fight (or are able to use the techniques and a real life situation,) it’s all theory! I know a lot of traditional martial arts guys who can really fight! But there’s a lot more charlatans and frauds! This would actually be an excellent video for dan! I doubt he will do it because he doesn’t like to get political.. he’s a very nice guy.
CARLO BELLA The point is the guys this man is fighting aren't masters at all. Just see the way they use guards : they only raise their arm in a way they watched in books or videos but in case of Tai Chi Chuan for exemple, you don't put your hands in that soft manner. The guard would be more like karate or wing chun form. And for win Chun, those so called master don't get any balance but put their entire body back when in guard. There is no honor in beating such impostors even for a average mma fighter.
Madjid CHOUARBI Sure! He’s challenging frauds! If someone’s not a fraud he’s not challenging them.... just because you are a traditional martial artist does not make you a fraud!
hi - where is the clip around 5:30 from? interesting video, thank you.
I have a question, what’s the different between shoalin animal style kung fu and Xíngyìquán animal styles?
Shaolin only have 5 animals forms, while Xingyiquan have 12.
I like the clip and martial sequences. I am not sure about their take on the history of Hsing-Yi Chuan. I'd like to see some sources and support for the history.
You butchered the names but this is very accurate and I would know, I've been studying for almost 6 years
I love Kung fu I love all martial arts in general except mma/bjj but that’s mainly because of the ignorance that comes with it also just the movements alone i don’t like it they train you for one purpose to fight but martial arts is a lot more than that it’s spiritual and mental as we as physical great video as always 👍🙏🏾
Awesome video and nice beard 👌
Will u ever do a video on northern and southern shaolin? Not many people realize there are variations to shaolin
Hopefully!
Plzzzz sir make a video on kalaripayattu.
Yes! This is a definite art I want to do and it is on my list :)
Ba gua is really interesting as well...
YO, I teach Xing Yi Quan.
Sweet! I hope you enjoyed this episode :)
@@ArtofOneDojo Dude, I love all your stuff, keep it up.
Shangxi? Hebei?
@@edkushnerick2090 I teach an adapted version of xing yi. It has the 5 elements 6 of the animals, 5 wolf forms and a few dragon forms.
@Gozer The Gozarian how do you know all these styles
Do you know or have you heard about what is going on with the videos on UA-cam on January 1, 2020, something to do with COPPA, I don’t understand very much but it doesn’t sound good, I’ve seen more people talking about it as it gets closer, do you think this would affect you in anyway or would it affect others with martial arts or self defense videos
Yes, and it's something we're watching very closely. It's already in affect and basically the law says it's illegal to collect data (search data, browsing history, targeted ads) on children online. As a result UA-cam is heavily enforcing a new rule in which you have to label your videos as "FOR KIDS" or "NOT FOR KIDS". They don't mean family friendly, they mean whether your target market is children.
We don't believe we fall into that because our content, even though it is children friendly, it not written nor targeted at children and most of our viewers are in the 18-54 range.
We are watching this very closely because this DOES affect some other channel we work on.
Oh ok, that info helps, I understand it a little more, thanks
@@jaypeve It's worth keeping an eye on...I am sure this will be a developing topic in the near future.
@@ArtofOneDojo your viewers are not limited to 54 yrs. I am 66years. and practicing various martial arts for and boxing for 5o years. Still continuing to learn and teach.
Hey if you are looking for some ideas why not do a series on the history, theory and mentality of capoeira. Also maybe a series on african and also Caribbean martial arts
Capoeria is definitely on the future list :)
Will you be doing a video on Jeet Kune Do any time?
At some point I would like to, but that one is still a bit away as we have several others in the works right now. There are so many I want to do and hope we get a chance to cover.
The art came from the battlefield. It uses body mechanics and stance.
your pronounciation is correct. Xing is pinyin. The X is prounounced with "ssshhhh".
Quan (Mandarin Chinese) = Ken (Japanese) = Kwon (Korean) = Kune (Cantonese) = Fist
Fa (Mandarin Chinese) = Po (Japanese) = Method or Law
Therefore Quanfa or Kenpo = Fist Method of Fist Law
Jutsu (Japanese) = Jishu (Mandarin Chinese) = Skills
Do (Japanese) = Dao (Mandarin Chinese) = Do (Cantonese) = Way
I only know this style because of MK: Deadly Alliance.
hey maybe you can do a video on What is Wing Chun?
It's already in the early stages :)
@@ArtofOneDojo Oh ok, good to hear :)
The Xing Yi Quan in this video is Hebei Xing Yi Quan. Do some research and show some true Xing Yi from the Shanxi province. Mainly Che or Song families. It's pretty much the most pure Xing Yi and is very similar to the Dai family. Good video though!
You have to stop making these excellent high quality videos... your distracting me from the fluff...
LOL....so...cats in Karate Gis?
Yuei Fei was probably given credit for Xing I because he fought the ancestors of the Qing. Perhaps Xing I's creator wanted to draw parallels between that struggle and the anti Qing struggle?
Dan out of what over 400 styles why did you start with xing yi?
Because I had a very experienced XingYiQuan instructor write a script for me and give me insight and materials to put this episode together :)
Is there a particular Kung Fu style I should have started with? I thought it was interesting and still had a good history to convey.
No I was trying to say everyone start with shaolin or wudang I actually appreciate the departure from tradition
Not bad. However, Daoist concepts were appended to martial arts by philosophers and mystics after the fact. Though there were some notable exceptions (Sun Lu Tang for one) most martial artists in China were not interested in philosophy at all. They just wanted to win fights.
Why is there a crocodile in the video’s image?
Because there are several animal styles associated with this art, and the Alligator is one of them. You can see more about that in part 2 of this video: ua-cam.com/video/pT3vCgXU-tU/v-deo.html
Art of One Dojo thanks 5th dan Dan
Battle Beast used wood, water, fire. Fire burns wood, water put out fire and wood floats on water.
Having certain styles passed on to family members and closed friends and extended family relatives, that was pretty common in china, especially in the north. It wasn't just the chinese muslim who did that. Many styles went underground after the cultural revolution, and after other events, i know that during the war against japan, a lot of people in martial arts went to hong kong, and taught there
omg, lol hes using master yang hais video to show the five fists. Hes from montreal , doesn't live far from me.
As above as below- The Kybalion
yes but i can't understand why you show xin yi ba pictures!.
Which images are in question?
