Master Yang, this video was awesome. Learned a lot of simple applications to improve my practice. You have to write a book on this topic. Hard copy lives on forever. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you master Yang for this amazing introduction video. I have been a long time fan of yours and I have been watching your videos here on UA-cam for about a decade. I have been patiently waiting for the online courses you said you were going to create on your website for over 5 or 6 years now. I hope with the release of these introductory videos you plan on finally offering the in depth Xingyi instructional video course you have promised us. I would love at least a solid bunch of Ji Ben Gong or foundational Xingyi training videos to start off with and then leading to learning the 5 Elements. The only question I have is how come you only mentioned 2 out of the 3 main branches of Xingyi? There is 1. Hebei, 2. Shanxi, and the 3rd style is from Henan.
Hello, I remember your account... Sorry for not being able to release the online learning system as early as promise. I have been preoccupied by different obligations. Now, I have more time so I am waiting for the lock-down finishes so that I can shoot instructional videos. I want to provide a high quality learning materials... Thanks for the commentary, as a Hebei style student, this resonates very well with my understanding of Xingyiquan and hope to see more videos! I like the multiple triangles explanation and the small dynamic adjustments in the Santishi.
You're very welcome! I only share the information which I think are useful to the community. Also, I hope you will keep practicing and make more progress in the future. Thanks .
This was an excellent video. I am a current practitioner of Xingyi and have been for a number of years. It was only recently that I found an instructor who could help me advance from where I was. I have practiced different forms of martial arts, including Aikido and Taiji, but Xingyi has always been the school that I was interested in learning.
@@HaiYangChannel Thank you. Once my instructor moved on, I used your Five Elements and Linking Form video to learn the elements. I watched that video a few hundred times. I learned a lot from your teachings.

Big respect and appreciation to you as you are working in hospital to help those who got the Covid19! I hope you will be safe. Also, practicing any style of martial art will not only help us maintain a good physical fitness, but also help us to be strong mentally. I hope you will keep practicing! Again good luck to you!
Thank you for doing these videos, I greatly enjoy your content. I practice He Bei Xingyiquan and I would like to ask if during your next Q&A you would discuss the 7 Stars and if there are exercises for including them in Xingyi practice. Thank you again.
Thank you for the information. I have background in budo, and one of the things that impresses me about xing yi is that kuzushi and attack happen simultaneously. This implies the use of good timing as well. Also, the heel rooting in a backstance is an ability i see in only advanced practitioners. Heel rooting is a lost art in many styles. I think xing yi is a key to unlocking some of stance-based attacks and the use of things seen in (karate) kata such as double downward block at the end of a sequence - it's not a block, it's a posture-breaking thrust of the entire body with a sinking aspect. What a gem you have there. Cheers!
Once again, thank you for sharing so freely and putting such thought into these lectures. I've never practiced Xingyiquan, but I've always suspected that the system of pa kua chang in which I began my training (and which still forms the fundamental basis for the more martial side of what I practice today) had a strong element of Hsing-i incorporated within it. In particular, there is a major emphasis in this pa kua system on linear drills and very application-oriented sequences/forms which are short, "obvious" or "simple" (for lack of a better word), and involve frequent expressions of fajin in strikes, steps, and combos. I understand that fajin is part of any martial art really, especially internal arts, but I hope you get the general point I'm trying to make in describing the system in which I began my study of pa kua. Unfortunately, the historical roots of the style are "shrouded in mystery" and so I could never discover from my Sifu at the time whether the system had its origins in one of the pa kua lineages that are known to have consciously incorporated hsing-i movements and principles and cross-trained with hsing-I practitioners on a regular basis. Your breakdown of the focus and structural elements of the santi stance has helped me more clearly distinguish it from the fighting/dragon posture that is used in my old pa kua system's linear practices. The two postures look almost identical, aside from some slight differences in the angle of the front foot and the level of the lead hand, but your analysis here in this vid has really helped me to understand how they are, in fact, different and provide for a readiness or poise to move or react in two very distinct manners. Thank you once again. To be perfectly honest, I've achieved more clarity and answers to several questions I've had from watching these two latest lecture vids of yours than I did from YEARS of asking questions of my previous teacher. Again, these are gold and I hope that many other people will come to appreciate them as such. Be safe.
Hello, thank you for your inputs. It is very common for someone to integrate some Xingyi elements to your own practice. Also, I am very happy to know that this video can provide a bit help for you to understand what you are practice, which is the objective of my video initially. I prefer to analyze the technical parts of any style so that I can understand the overall big-picture of the development of the system. Again, I like your writing very much. Thank you.
brennantranslation.wordpress.com/2013/04/29/the-voices-of-sun-lutangs-teachers/ Reading Sun Lu Tang's descriptions really helped me to connect why so many things in taichi, bagua, and xingyi are very similar. In ways more than simply all being derived from the principles in the I-ching and Tao Te Ching.
Thank you master Yang. I would love to have a 12 Animals course. I feel like this subject is often neglected and treated as just another form for people to learn.
Single movement I have seen you mention this twice I think that I must have over looked this aspect. Unfortunately my training has been very incomplete. I have focused mostly on santi and other held stances, but I think you have opened my eyes to the concept of single movement. Perhaps even though I am isolated the single movement may be the most important way to train movement, I also had not noticed so many triangles. I sent you a video of me practicing my singing exercises while standing in san ti last October. I will begin to pay more attention to these multiple triangles in order to improve my structure. And I will be very vigilant to search out single movements
I love your videos! You consolidate all of the research into a short lecture so well. Thank you! You mentioned 10 years for Taiji, 1 year for Xingyi, how long for Bagua?
Thank you for sharing as always. I can relate very much to the fact that XingYi is deceivingly simple. I have been practicing for almost 2 years and it feels like a deep well. I enjoy the discoveries of getting it “perfect” by finding new details every practice. Only after these moments I can realize and appreciate the depth of every movement, especially the simplest ones which I often come back to. That aside, your videos are getting better and more structured. The 3 videos have been very informative introduction to Internal Style. I hope your channel grows bigger and could help your effort in popularizing the Internal Martial Arts.
Great to hear! I am learning how to create videos recently. It is much easier to teach in person but hard to shoot a video...but practice will make it better. Thanks for your encouragement.
You should meet my Xing Yi master, you would have much to share. He is a gracious and gentle man yet has a flexible and unbreakable iron center. You should push hands with him. Thank you for sharing your knowledge as I find all true understanding of Xing Yi to be vital to my training.
@@HaiYangChannel Yang Shifu, actually I should somehow call you Shi Gong, one of your student named Diep Phuong in Canada taught Xing Yi to one of the guy I respect who taught me some Xing Yi techniques. You take care Sir, hopefully things can be normal soon.
Oh. He had practiced with me for years. And even today we have contact after he moved to Toronto. He is a very nice person and has been working hard in martial arts. It is good to know he taught you xingyi.
No Sir, I never met him, but Mr Phuong taught Xing Yi Quan to Mr Nghia Le, one of the man I respect alot, who also taught me some of Xing Yi movements. At that time I did not understand about Chinese martial arts, but now the more I look the more I am awed and want to take up real training to add up to my martial arts training. I hope that the pandemic will soon be over, so that I could travel to be your student. You take care Yang Shi Fu !
Thank you very much for this wonderful video. I am currently daily practicing 8 Pieces of Brocade Qigong, 20 minutes of Santi Zhan Zhuang, Sun style Taichi (72 and 98) as well as Xingyi forms like 5 element linking fist and Zhashichui. I did practice some Bagua years ago and found your Baguazhang to be helpful. As someone who has studied several different styles of martial arts it’s very helpful to hear someone focusing on fundamentals like the Santi and the triangles. I completely agree with simplicity=sharpness and your concerns about how the Wushu movement in China has misunderstood key principles of Xingyi (stereotyping it as soft). Also as someone who has been speaking and reading Chinese for over 40 years I am grateful that you make references in Chinese. I would also like to hear you talk about some of the health, spiritual and moral dimensions of martial arts too. BTW, I live in Pennsylvania so let me know if you have any long-distance learning opportunities. I am sure you are a great teacher and have great students. Like the Chinese saying goes: 嚴師出高徒。 非常感謝您!魏世德牧師。
Wu is such a common "sound" and it is used almost everywhere. So, I need to know which Wu you are talking about first. Of course you can practice them together.
Hello, you mentioned you have students in Canada, can you tell us in what part of Canada (what city) and the name of their school if they have one? Very nice explanation in all of your videos, I subscribed!
老师,which order of videos you recommend to people that is interested on the practice of Wudang/hebei martial arts? I don't know if check the forms first or your introductory video. 谢谢你的课,我得好好学习,好好工作。老师加油!
Hello, I think start from practicing Santi stance first. Then, five elements. I have these videos in my channel. Please check it out and try to follow the movement:) Thanks,
Excellent video. Do you consider the 8 word skill (bazigong) to be part of the core Xing Yi Practice? As in, after a practitioner has become comfortable with the 5 elements and 12 animals, are the 8 word skills a crucial addition or would more benefit be gotten by focusing that time on the elements and animals? Thank you.
Hello, great question. I think you must have had a lot of training experience. In my opinion, people should not practice the 8-Word too early. Because the body structure and force of this practice is different from other materials in Xingyi. So, I would keep learning other routines and refine 5-element and 12-animal first. Then, gradually, practice 8-word one by one when keeping practicing others. Thanks,
Hai Yang, you are one of the few who can put the theory and practice together. It's a shame the true essence of such beautiful arts is becoming lost. I hope we can preserve their methods and deep teachings through the next generations, so the study of the way through martial arts can continue. Do you know Li Shao Geng or Cui Tong Yi?
Thank you for your comments. We should integrate the theory part and practice together since they are one unity. Sure I know them, they are in Tianjin. Cuo Tongyi is Cui Zhenxian's son. Li xiaogeng learned the same style as Cui Tongyi. They still practice and teach even at their senior age. Did you study with them?
@@HaiYangChannel I thought you would know them! My teacher was a student of Li Laoshi. He has many great stories of his times in Tianjin. They sound like tough old guys with some scary power! The Li Cunyi style I study comes from this line. However I have also been introduced to Zhang Zhaodong style from my teacher, which is very long and expansive in personal comparison. I would like to ask you, what do you feel you have learned from the Li Cunyi and Zhang Zhaodong lines that you study? Other than different outside form, what have they taught you?
@@heartandmindmartialarts8570 Oh, it is good to know that your teacher learned from them. I have left Tianjin and moved to Canada for 20 years now. But still, I have a lot of contacts in the martial art community in China. So, I still remember their names. Regarding your question, I am not sure I fully understood it or not. It seems you ask me about what is the "inside feeling" between these two lines... if so, I have to say that it is not that easy to answer it here since different people feel differently. My personal experience now is that there is no difference to me anymore from years ago no matter how do I practice since I have internalized what I have studied years ago. It is very hard to remember a feeling...which is a normal issue for any people. Sorry for not being able to answer it clearly.
@@HaiYangChannel not a problem, it wasn't a very straightforward question! Perhaps asking what you have gained from say, Taiji, Xingyi and Bagua would have been better? I guess it's a bit like saying the different arts are like different trees. As you progress, you learn more about all the details and qualities of the different trees but in the end they are all trees the same. I hope to meet you one day in Canada!
Depends on what people are looking for and their physical and learning style... it is a good question, I think I will make a video for it. Thanks you for asking me this one.
Thank you very much. I always watch your videos. I'm from Argentina and I practice Wu Shu Kung Fu Bak Siu Lam style and I'd love to learn more about Hsing I, which I'm doing thanks to you! Many thanks.
Hello Hai Yang Sifu I have 2 questions. Are you looking through the Tiger mouth in the distance or do you focus on the tip of the index? It seems 2 methods can be used but I would love to hear your version. And the other question is about the lower Dan Tian hand. Do you keep some space or do you stick the the side of the palm on the Dan Tian? Thanks for your time.
Great questions! for the first one, I prefer let my students to focus on the direction of the finger tip of index finger. The lower palm can stay on the stomach and it is better to be like this in the beginning. Thanks.
ah Xingyiquan, the main art i'm focusing on. So much to learn. I would love to train with you to fix up my structure and learn some Xuedian stuff some day. I've been told that Santishi is not a fighting stance, just a method to train alignment and structure. What's your take on it? If it's not a fighting stance what should the stance be? I believe MonkeyStealsPeach did a video series exploring different styles of Xingyi here on UA-cam that is pretty interesting. Thanks again for the wonderful introduction!
Hello, I'd like to answer your question. Any stances can be used in self-defense if we know how to practice it. However, a stance is just a stance since a stance will not have "speed," "power", or other elements for self-defense purposes. Therefore, there is no such "fighting stance" in xingyi if we focus on the specific function of a stance... I do not know anything about money steal peach. are you talking about a movement? I will check it out soon. Thanks.
@@HaiYangChannel Monkey steals peach is a UA-cam channel, he produced videos where he visited masters from Hebei, and people from the Dai, Song and Che family as well I believe.
@@ZiranmenBerlin I just checked it out. I recognized a couple of friends of mine in the video. I was from Tianjin. And I was in Tianjin when Tang Shengjun was interviewed. The world is so small:):):) Good to see that some people can go to Tianjin to interview some of my friends.
Xiexie sifu. There is no xing yi teachers near me and very little on UA-cam about it, and I am totally obsessed with it and would love to learn. I have two questions. First What is the first form you teach your students after they have a handle on San ti? And would you consider doing a video on that form so people like me can learn a little of this beautiful art? My second question is i bought a book called hsing-i chuan by James McNeil and Andrew Jackson and I was curious if you know of them and if you think their teaching is authentic? Thank you again for all the effort you put in, I really enjoy your videos. Amituofo!
Hello, thank you for your comments. I think I will gradually add more materials to the UA-cam channel about xingyi practice. After practice of Santi, they should practice 5 elements and 12 animals. And other materials as well. I am in the process to develop an online teaching system. I will start to shoot the video after the virus issule settles down so that we can start to work at the studio. I have no idea about these two gentlemen at all. I am not active in the martial art community, so I only know a few people outside of China in this community. So hard to give you an answer about it, sorry for it.
@@HaiYangChannel ok thank you so much for all that information and for taking the time to respond to me. I love Chinese kung fu! @@HaiYangChannel Liu He Ba *Fa*, also known as Water Boxing aka Six Harmonies Eight Methods Boxing. Dear God, yes, man! Its origins are credited to the Song Dynasty Taoist sage Chen Tuan (Chén Tuán 陳摶, also known as Chén Xīyí 陳希夷 or by his nickname, Chen Po), who lived in the late ninth and early 10th centuries.
Of course I know that story and I have heard about it for decades. But it's just some legendary stories without a solid written evidence to support that claim. This is one of the reasons why Liu He Ba Fa is not commonly recognized as a style in China. At most, it is a combination of Xing Yi, Tai Chi and Ba Gua, based on most people's belief.

@@corehydration9796 OK then. There's nothing magical or mystical being discussed here in this video or on this channel by this teacher. If anything, practicing martial arts (or any physical discipline) to a high level should help a person achieve an informed understanding and grasp of reality. You learn about the realities of your own body -- its limits and its potentials. You learn about the realities of your own psychology -- your fears, determination, and discipline. You learn about the realities of the art - its points of focus, its weaknesses, its tactics. Perhaps most importantly, you learn about the reality of fighting and violence. You learn how truly fragile the human body can be, how easy it is to hurt others or be hurt yourself. Perhaps you can learn something about the reality of darkness, pain, even death. And, in so doing, perhaps you learn to appreciate how short and precious life is and why you shouldn't waste yours. There's nothing magical here for you.

And so far, I’m not even came to study the animal form yet though I look forward to see the swallow form.
Hello, I have read your post for a couple of times in order to have time to think about how to respond it. In my opinion, being skinny is not a problem at all. What you can do is just to adjust your practice in terms of structure and posture, not the contents of xingyi. One should practice the whole system no matter their body shape, not only choose some parts of it due to their physical condition. Also, I am working on developing an online program and i hope it will be ready in the future. Thanks,

Please upload more videos of forms and applications of xing yi, they are very good as you explain and practice
Well, application is not the main objective of this video series.
@@HaiYangChannel I am not talking about this series, but you have others where you show form and applications
@@HaiYangChannel you are an expert and I would like to see more of that type, since in Colombia there is not much reference of xing yi
Thank you for doing these videos, I greatly enjoy your content. I practice He Bei Xingyiquan and I would like to ask if during your next Q&A you would discuss the 7 Stars and if there are exercises for including them in Xingyi practice. Thank you again.
Yes, absolutely
Thank you sir❤
Thank you for the information. I have background in budo, and one of the things that impresses me about xing yi is that kuzushi and attack happen simultaneously. This implies the use of good timing as well. Also, the heel rooting in a backstance is an ability i see in only advanced practitioners. Heel rooting is a lost art in many styles. I think xing yi is a key to unlocking some of stance-based attacks and the use of things seen in (karate) kata such as double downward block at the end of a sequence - it's not a block, it's a posture-breaking thrust of the entire body with a sinking aspect. What a gem you have there. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your information. And thank you for your comment.
Excellent video (again) with a lot of insightful explanations and substance!
Thanks fred, I hope you will put more video on FB as well.
@@HaiYangChannel Thank you very much. I'm glad that my feedback is appreciated by you in this way. Be well.
I am truly grateful to you .... I hope you continue your noble work. His explanation of San Ti is very useful and has helped me a lot. Thank you.

Thank you master Yang. I would love to have a 12 Animals course. I feel like this subject is often neglected and treated as just another form for people to learn.
yeah, i really want a video explain about 12 animals move and how to practice them
Not sure a short video will be able to cover it or not. Let's see what I can for it in the future.
It depends on people's background. IT wouldnt' help much without a solid foundation of 5-element before practicing 12-animal forms.
@@HaiYangChannel I would be willing to pay for a distance course on the 12 Animals in detail. I understand it's a long endeavor.
Thank you!
Single movement I have seen you mention this twice I think that I must have over looked this aspect. Unfortunately my training has been very incomplete. I have focused mostly on santi and other held stances, but I think you have opened my eyes to the concept of single movement. Perhaps even though I am isolated the single movement may be the most important way to train movement,
I also had not noticed so many triangles. I sent you a video of me practicing my singing exercises while standing in san ti last October. I will begin to pay more attention to these multiple triangles in order to improve my structure. And I will be very vigilant to search out single movements
Good to know that you are on the right path. Thanks.
I love your videos! You consolidate all of the research into a short lecture so well. Thank you!
You mentioned 10 years for Taiji, 1 year for Xingyi, how long for Bagua?
Thank you for your comments. I cannot recall any sayings about Bagua...:)
@@HaiYangChannel You have been practicing for so many years now. What's your personal practice? Basics, forms and sparring?

thanks.

THank you Yang Shifu, I would love to visit and practise Xing Yi whenever this pandemic is over !
You are very welcome to come to practice with us. Take good care.
@@HaiYangChannel Yang Shifu, actually I should somehow call you Shi Gong, one of your student named Diep Phuong in Canada taught Xing Yi to one of the guy I respect who taught me some Xing Yi techniques.

Is the word “Wu” used in hebei style Hsing Yi Chuan?
And is it good to practice yang style 108 tai chi form with Hsing Yi together on the same day?
Wu is such a common "sound" and it is used almost everywhere. So, I need to know which Wu you are talking about first. Of course you can practice them together.

I am surprised not to hear Liu He Ba Fa being mentioned as a fourth internal style of China along with the other three. Why is that?
Is Liu He Ba Gua a well developed style? Not sure.

I’m a skinny guy and I think the swallow style of xingyi could be perfect for me to train because its agility and fast moves. Unfortunately, there are no xingyi masters here and it s quite difficult to learn just only watching the videos.
Thanks,
