What a nightmare if that was me I would of gone home
Tom, did you do the knowledge the traditional way moped, or bike, or did you do it online?
One of my mates got the green badge when he 20....he earned a fortune working nights he bought his first house, of course living at home made all the difference, of course it was in the 80s when earnings were higher, we lost touch because he worked nights, so socially it didn't work, sadly during COVID he commited suicide...no way would I'd have thought he'd do that, he was a typical cab driver, life and soul of the party, I miss him terribly, you're a great lad make the best of it, make sure you socialise outside of the trade that's so important for mental health stay safe ...you've a great UA-cam show well done regards John Brown
Oh shit. I wonder if he thought COVID was end of his career as a cabbie and life won't ever be the same? And he loved his work so much he couldn't bear with that possibility?
Minimum age is 21 for a London Cab License.
@@drummerboy1390 you can get your green badge at any age but cant drive a taxi till 21.
@@drummerboy1390 Ooops, I smell BS!
@@mariemccann5895Sadly it's the truth
These videos certainly put into context why cab journeys appear to be quite expensive but are in fact good value.
Your seamless narrative to live speech cuts are very cool! your vids are getting more and more pro bro
Thanks! So much work to edit haha!
I thought that - really slick.
At one point you were saying you weren't sure if, with all the closure hassles it would be worth working that night. But I'm sure nearly all those you picked up were glad you did. Considering how much of a nightmare getting around those places at such a time with all the closures, you did a fantastic job!
Why am I, a man in Nottingham who has been to London about 3 times, watching this? Absolutely no idea but I love it
Thanks for tuning in 🙌🏻
One thing I hadn't thought of before: when driving in the dark, and in the rain, how on earth do you spot people sticking their hand out for a cab? You must have special night vision!
Yes it is a lot more difficult, especially whilst trying to assess hazards around you
You get these magic tentacles , like a feeling of you know who is going to or not
@@richard9444 Haha, it's a skill I'd never be able to learn.
He develops money eyes: it's worth his while to be on the lookout, and if he's mistaken he can just drive on.
Pretty simple if your looking for it, theatres, restaurants, hotels, members clubs, designer retail stores etc…your always looking for a hand.
As an ex private hire driver I can relate to everything you said in this issue right down to the lady muttering to herself and forgetting its news years eve, you guys and your knowledge of London is mind blowing, stay safe
Super interesting insight into the mechanics of the 2 cabs job! And look at Tom being an absolute gentleman.
It’s easier if we work all United
What a great insight. I've only been in Central London for NYE once and it took 2 hours just to walk from Blackfriars to Charing Cross due to the crowds and only then found out the station was closed! Happy New Year Tom!
Another insight into Tom the Taxi Drivers varied jobs on NYE. It demonstrates how well worthwhile the "knowledge" is for taxi drivers to get passengers across London, even more so when there so many road closures in place.
I visited the NYE fireworks in London about 5-6 years ago, after they finished it only took around 2-3 hours to walk under a mile to Waterloo station - one of those 'nice to do once' events but never again!
Really enjoy the content you put out Tom! Your demeanor and outlook in life is also very encouraging and uplifting. I hope to be able to take a trip in your cab someday
Tom can't thank you enough for your videos, utterly brilliant insight and your a natural orator. I love our fantastic city and I'm certain you've opened it up to a whole new audience. I always look out when I see a cab just in case its you! Thank you so much!!
One of the highlights of my week seeing these videos come out. I used to work on Gloucester road in the offices above the Waitrose now live in Scotland so always make me smile seeing the local area
Watching these videos are such a great way to relax. I always end up watching them all the way through. Thanks Tom!
As always, super interesting. This channel has started to get me to use the Black Cab, esp. with groups. Super useful too as I've had buses on diversion. Thanks for demystifying something I've always been to nervous to try.
Only ever worked one news years Eve and had a very similar experience to you. Gave up and went home at 10pm. Great video. Keep up the good work.
You've almost got an identical last name to Tom.
I was talking to a friend about doing NYE in London one year. This video has changed my mind! What a stress for you Tom, I'd have given up long before you did!
as a part time aspiring driver for a ride-hailing company i find this video informative. thanks!
Fascinating insights Tom - thank you for sharing. Happy 2023 - wishing you good health, wealth and happiness in the year ahead. Stay well and paositive. Take care ; - )
Having lived as an expat for the last 7 years, I just love these videos Tom!
It’s surprising to see what acutely happens in London when your only watching from home. Must say didn’t expect that many closers!
Happy New Year! Virtual hail from Budapest! :) Lived in Knightsbridge for many years, found your channel by accident, thanks for all the rides! :)
Your videos are great, Tom. Just enjoy driving with you and listening. Really feels like I'm back in London.
Your channel is brilliant… always looking forward to the next video! Keep up the good work mate
amazing content Tom worked all over central a few years back as an electrican cool too see all the places i worked on. and my favorite cafes etc
I love your videos bro. Your commentary and professionalism is top notch. Great guy. 👍🏾
never knew how much I loved listening to cabbies........ this is therapy for me.... apparently. Tom, you are onto a good thing here.
Tom, I am looking forward to more videos in 2023. Happy New Year 🎉
Not sure why this appeared as a suggestion on my feed, but I loved it.

Okay, might have answered my own question.
Great seeing London (the main views and side streets) as it's a place I rarely get too visit these days. Being a bit of a country boy it amazes me that people even pay for a taxi for a sort journey less than a couple of mile (I'd walk it), but I'm finding this channel a revelation!
Watched one of your blindfold challenges too - hell, if I'm hailing a cab in future - I want you in the drivers seat.
Thanks for bringing the world of the Cabbie to the world - I'm definitely going back through the archive of this channel.
Absolutely love your videos travelling in London with you working the streets of London. Brilliant!! So frustrating when it is so quiet especially on New Years Eve. Why so many roads closed ??
Very interesting, as always. Also a great illustration of having The Knowledge.
Great video Happy New Year Tom
Another great video Tom! Thank you
Really enjoyed that video. Thanks for sharing 👍
great narrative editing, tom!
Lovely to once again have your point of view on New Year's Eve. I managed to be in London but failed to encounter you. Big city innit? Will definitely return to London so perhaps we meet after all.
Really enjoyed this video Tom, thanks and happy (late) new year.... p.s. some great unique content you have
Boxing day was my busiest day of the entire year, was nice though, I pre-booked everything with my regular clients for both Boxing day and NYE. No hassle with random drunks that way
Fascinating! Thanks Tom
Have you done a video about worst case scenarios? What if somebody can't pay? What if everybody jumps out and runs away in different directions without paying? Have you ever gotten the police involved? Have you ever turned anybody down because they looked too dodgy or dirty?
that's the good thing about uber its pre pated for, some taxis in Melbourne at certain times are also pre paid (not 100% sure about that)
Great vid as always, thank you!
Amazing video, exceptional editing as always (we appreciate the work!) id personally say you ended up being pretty lucky considering the widespread closures! Great vid
Enjoyed this one Tom. Entertaining and informative as usual. Stayed in an airBnB at 103 Lexham Gardens a few years ago. Handy for Earls Court, museums. Had to buzz by Freddie Mercury's house, Garden Lodge but felt a bit wierd. 😀
One of your best videos Tom 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
New years day was super busy with food orders! There were so many people on the streets... Taxis looked really busy! Love the videos
Thanks! Hope you are well!
I use to work New Year’s Eve, I’d wait till 12 say happy new years to my family then go out in the cab the restrictions would lift and be people everywhere work all through the night
This is a great channel, one of my favourites.
I have never seen so much of central London so closed off..
It must make your job real hard work..
I was taxi /private hire driver and it was in Coventry and down South Wales.
I think the days have gone where you can really bump up your income. Back in 1987 -1994 roughly speaking an average night take was 300 including tips.
I am 59 nearly And would have loved to be a London Cabbie. With all night fares and all daytime fares I sometimes missed a trick.
Great video and I love generally learning the routes you take..
Happy belated new year Tom..
I'm new to your channel. I really enjoyed that. Keep up the great work
Great watching your videos lived in London for 28 years now 84 living in Scotland 😇 5:32
I LOVED THIS VIDEO!
New subscriber. Been binging your videos for a few days. You should be sponsored by the London Board of Tourism (or whatever it's called) seeing how your videos make me want to go back there so bad; love this city.
So pleased you listen to Absolute 90s!
nice 1 again tom.carry on.
Busy on and off days are the things I miss greatly about driving cabs. Long gaps between fares I don't miss one iota.
Certainly isn’t the case now in January haha!
18:50 PSII CAB? Sounds like somebody grew up playing Crazy Taxi!
Just starting my taxi career at 23 after a year of truck driving.
Really hoping this is my future 🙏
You kept extremely calm and composed whilst working the most stressful time/day/night of the year. Well done sir I salute you. Love these videos and verbal delivery as well. Thank you👍👍
Another great vlog 👍
love ur vids bro
Awesome video, subbed!
I had a great time working one NYE/NYD as well! I was part of the First Night Boston festivities in Copley Square! (and even including the time difference I was still working... or maybe getting pizza, who's to say)
Great video Sir
I've used an app to get a cab from a Premier Inn in London 3 black cabs in a row accept only to cancel before they get there, got one on 4th try, this was during a tube strike , great new years video.
Yay ! you mentioned Freddie Mercury's now his life long friend Marys Auctions house on Logan Place - visted there last time i was in London - my favourite singer of all time. Greetings from Newcastle Tom !
I'm rarely conscious of when it's New Year's Eve, partially as it has no meaning for me. Often I only realise it's my birthday around lunchtime.
I'm an Uber driver but I have 100% respect for how smart Taxi drivers are 👍👍👍
Another Great Vid Tom Nice one mate, See you out there Be Lucky, Regards Mike AKA MEC
Again another splendid vid.. for having been a cabbie for close to 10 years, 7 of which during night shift, I can pretty much imagine myself about what you're telling.. yet, in our place, Eindhoven the Netherlands, when roads were being closed for traffic to ease up, cabs were allowed through.. weren't you allowed due terrorist threat, or has this been always like this?
Can you restart the meter? Bloody classic! Had me laughing out loud
Ps we are up London Piccadilly tomorrow staying over at the Hub Premier Inn Soho I hope we catch you for a ride !
Where I live we start at £5 instead of £4 also instead of 20p per 185 yards it is 40p after 6pm Christmas Eve until Boxing Day ends. Same with New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Meter automatically updates. This is East Lothian Scotland.
great vog xxx
Very interesting Tom.
Your right Tom money made safe night it's just another day
What a Palava of closures
Thanks. interesting insights. Really like your delivery... presentation not passengers :)
Good video Tom, your skin is looking good man!
Thank you! Getting there with it
Was thinking at the end of the video you could of tried SW a bit more? Around battersea/Clapham. I reckon loads of people would of been going to house parties and out in Clapham.
71.5k subs happy new year tom
Great video as always. I have not worked on New Years Eve for many years. In Oslo it is one of the best days in the year to make money, but I cannot stand drunk customers anymore. As employed I drove a minibus and it was hell on such days. I saw you drove a family Tom. How are the rules when driving children from 0 to 12 years.
Fascinating video, I hope you were able to see th^the fireworks! Thanks for your Sunday updates - they always make me think, and see things from your point of view. Love your optyimistic outlook, and keep thinking of things to reply, but somehow know that you must have an overwhelming number of emails. You’re not likely t hear from an old septuagenarian like myself.. Tll you what though, I shall do so this weekend. R.D
Fantastic to see all those plastic posts removed much easier to get around near St Pancras
Hi Tom great videos about can go through some rough area of London Ali Walsall west midlands have ever had a job up to Walsall junction 10 m6
Thanks
19:37 oh yeah I've seen this Yacht, the entrance actually looks like a hotel entrance, it's weird!
New years day is the one 😉
Please don’t tell him 😂
Crazy that you got £4 extra per job!!, I work as a cabbie in Scotland. Our rate on state 2 starts at £4.50 however on Christmas and New Year we go to Stage 3 at 6pm that starts at £5.40, then Stage 4 at 10pm starting at £6.75. Every 200m it goes up by 25p.
I am retired now but we had fare plus 50% nye up to midnight and double after. Same Christmas eve and all day Christmas day and boxing day. I personally hated nye had too many no pick ups. Customers would book multi cabs and the first one there got the job, Making you late for all other bookings. Between midnight and 2 a. M. I took the grand total of 20.00, After that I refused to work nye other than for my private customers. Hate new year to this day, its only time.
Where about in Scotland are you
@@garystewart2512 Fife
Work New Year’s Day next year, same extras and loads of work with few closures
I had covid on New Years Eve. Those 6 bottles of Budweiser are still in the fridge. Let me tell you what a crazy night that was going to be. Anyway - keep up the great work and have a great 2023.
You should get seat covers i always have them for drinks issues or worse
Excellent video as always from London's no 1 cabbie! Stay safe. All the best. 👍
Goat vid
Smashing episode Tom!!! 👌 as someone who loves to keep their cab spotless as you do And with your upholstered have you thought about seat covers or are they a bit tacky ???
Not allowed as far as I’m aware
I'm a private hire driver in Devon, NYE we had the meter starting at £9.90, that was including the £5 surcharge, i love working on NYE, job after job and most people are in good spirits, we also had that charge on christmas day as well. Ended up earning just over £500 for the night, i wish this was every night haha
love rhe content Tom keep it up 👍
Seems disproportionate that you can add extra to your meter but at the same time can't really get anywhere cos all the roads are closed.
Great Video thanks
Lots of people traveling when the taxis are working harder, if you want a cheep holiday there are 74 other cities in the UK
Our fares are set differently up here where i live, Our base rate starts at £3.60 for the first 600 yards and goes up 20p every 150 yards, that is if we are staying within our county areas, if we go outwith those areas or its after 10pm it starts at £4.50/600 yards and 20p every 150 yards.
now the fun starts for us at 6pm on xmas eve till boxing day and nye till the 2nd jan. where the starting fare is £5.40/600 yards and then 30p for each 150 yards but after 10pm its £6.75/600 yards and 40p for each 150 yards after...
that racks up quickly. All this is set by the local council before anyone says its ripping people off...yes we know its not cheap. I can also guarantee that one borough of london is bigger in area than the town i work from.
Saying that i had a good xmas/nye
