- This VLOG shows 3 garden tasks that I did in my backyard this week. First, I trim my Opuntia every year because they grow fast and they become top heavy. Second, it is time to pot up some of my echinopsis pups that has rooted. Then lastly, I have a pot of Gymnocalycium cactus seedlings that have outgrown their pot so it is time to pot them up in their individual pots.

Another thing I use on the bottom of my pots are old dryer sheets, it works wonders and also helps put them to use once used up😁
Oh yeah. I see some do that, too. I use my used coffee filter bags sometimes. 😉

Polyembryony. Geez, I hope I can remember that. It is exciting to get wacky seedlings. One of mine developed 2 heads much later on in its growth so it looks like a tree with 2 heads on top. But I have yet to get a variegated seedling. 😉 Thanks Daz for watching. I know this one is longer than usual.
Thanks for the tip about sprinkling cinnamon on the area where the cactus was pruned to prevent fungal rot! I had no idea about that and didn't find that mentioned anywhere else!

Opuntias in my area are easy to grow. They also produce delicate-looking flowers during spring. Definitely my go-to cactus for the garden!
@@CactusCaffeine I know some opuntia can grow in my climate of London with no shelter as I have seen it for myself when I visited Kew Gardens botanical gardens but I am not sure which ones.. I have Opuntia microdasys and Opuntia bentonii, if you know if either of them are hardy enough for London I would love to know, thanks :D if not can you please tell me which ones are hardy in London (if you know of course haha) I would just love to have a massive pricklypear in the garden

Another great and helpful video, Ana. I'm not a big fan of Opuntia's. They tend to get wild and out of hand the bigger they grow. Good repotting demo. Very well done 👍👍

Haha. Tongs are my favorite tool when it comes to cacti. The farther my fingers are from the spines, the better. 😁 Lol on the haircut.

Wow that is nice! It must be nice to live in an area where you can grow like that outside! I have an Opuntia however it is a houseplant and it is about a foot and some inches tall. However in the house it will not grow like that! NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in zone 6 Ohio and we have the seasons so houseplants it is for the cactus!

I LOVE twins, i have a few sets of twins, an Opuntia englemannii, a rando Gymnocalicium and a new Pach. pringlei. I planted 10k mixed seeds in the hopes of finding wacky ones
10k?! Oh my goodness that is a lot. Yeah, it’s cool. I have another one that developed 2 heads later on in its growth and also one that is crested. I have yet to produce a variegated. 😀🤞
BIFRUCATED cacti are cool, especially when the normals are typically solitary. Some varieties are also normal when stem split growth occurs.
I have some seedlings do this naturally or when fungus happens and heals. 😄 I can never remember that term. Thanks!

Oh my shears? Nothing special. I got them from one of the big box stores. 😁 They are very handy, though and sharp, too. 👍🏼

And if you cut in the cutting not in the plant left (sorry, I can't explain myself better) the little piece left will dry and fall by itself without hurting the plant. (I just love "nopales"!!!)
This was a fun video to watch this morning. I think that's great you can move those opuntia back. I can't imagine there having been a big hole back there. Does the tray for the pups have holes? I've got a bunch of pups and been wondering how to go about this. I bought that black gold soil and found out unfortunately that each part of the country gets different mixes. Here in the south east we get a really terrible blend that's mostly sticks. If I sift it it's good but you get so little you're just buying stick. Nothing as nice as your mix. So stupid they do that. I found out from a review on Amazon. On the bag it even says different ingredients for different regions. Cactus pretty much need the same stuff I have no idea why they do something so dumb. I can't wait for my first seedlings to get big enough to repot. My oldest ones are two months and still the same size as when they sprouted. Oh I have that same white and blue tweezer haha.
Yes the tray does have holes for drainage. I forgot to mention that. Thanks for asking that. 👍🏼 You are not the first person to tell me that Black Gold mixes in other states are different. I don’t know where mine came from as there is no Nevada state indicated on the bag. The other person says his has mostly peat moss and no lava rocks. 😟 I’m sure your seedlings will do great. They go through a growth spurt at some point. 😃
@@CactusCaffeine Yeah, it's annoying it's not a consistent formula. I wish mine had lava rocks. Mine was mostly sticks. I should have taken a photo but won't buy it again. Aw thanks. Hope they'll get to that growth spurt soon.
Talking about the opuntia (nopal in México), Have you tried to eat them before they get so big??? They're one of my favorite food!! We have a lot of plants at home just to have a good meal 😊
Oh I love eating nopales. Someone used to grill them for me and they are delicious! Too bad I do not know how to prepare them myself. 😌
Cactus Caffeine there are many many ways, but just grilling them with salt are 👌🏼 I like then with chicken in green tomatoe chili sauce 😋

How do you keep them from change color , mine tend to grown some kind of fungus ?
Good air circulation will help keep fungus down. Also don’t let them sit in wet soil for too long.
Do you have any tips on propagating this cactus inside? I live in Florida and I’m worried it might be too wet for it outside until it has roots. Thank you for any advise! P.s I love your channel.
This opuntia is easy to root. They grow better outside and can take more water than other cactus when established. When grown in low light, the pads will grow elongated instead of round. While rooting, just put it under a roof to protect it from getting too wet. 🙂

When is the proper timing to cut the pads from the Cactus?
Generally for Opuntias, if you are planning to root the pads, do it when the pads are big enough. They should be able withstand a little bit of drying out while it is still rooting.

The spines on this one are few and far apart. So I was able to grab them on the area with no spines. 😉
I’m going to make desert garden by my house. Have a very small area that is not being used.

Ohhhh. This plant (bunny ears) is something I'll only dream about. Totally illegal in Australia as they are considered a pest and have been eradicated throughout the country. Wondered why I'd never seen one in our nurseries. 😫
I saw a video about opuntias being banned in Australia. I guess your environment is so conducive to them that they start growing like weeds there.

I can't believe this people let those cactus grow too big, and nobody start eating them. If you eat them, there is no problem with the growing...that cactus is so nutritious...

Try niyo po change yung soil. Napansin ko po yung mga cactus ko na nakatanim sa pangit na soil, mabagal po lumaki at kapag tinanggal ko sa pot, kaunti lang yung roots. Try niyo din po mag-fertilize. 🙂

When I moved up north back to Oregon from Pasadena at 36 I had moved back to California at 18 and had the time of my life in the L.A. area I wanted to bring as much of California with me so I dug up some cactuses I had in the backyard I moved into Oregon Southwest Oregon the summer here are even hoter then L.A . Most summers.The cactuses I brought with me attendant in my front yard in Oregon and they didn't do much for about 2 years and started turning brown and looked sick.I started watering them every day in the summer and gave them Cactus fertilizer Miracle-Gro and most of all eggshells after two years they came right out of looking sick and started growing all over the place on top of each other right next to each other.I was afraid to put them in time out.I hope I didn't hurt them. I did like you said only cut on the one I'm removing at the joint. I WANTED THEM TO GET TALL NOT TO SPREAD OUT .MY KIND HAVE YELLOW FLOWERS.
There are some Opuntias that grow low but spreading, just like yours. My Piña Colada and Aurea are like that. They grow sideways and spreading. But the Ficus Indica will grow tall. 🙂
How long does it take to form a root?
If you plant them during warmer months, they root fast. Mine did in less than a month.

By now you probably know that it is cheaper to go to a local gravel and rock company and buy by
the ton...they will accommodate small orders too. I use empty cat litter containers. They weigh my car, I drive in and they fill them, they weigh my car again and I pay and go.

Nice Gymnocalycium seedlings!!! Cool double!! Yes I remember opuntia ficus indica in California. As I remember they grew into large tree like plants!! Probably good to control them a bit. My cactus soil is coconut coir and decomposing dolomite which I get about 2 miles away from the bluffs that run along the river, which easily crushes into dolomite sand. And small limestone gravel which I get right out in front of the park. Here in the Ozarks we live on top of limestone so these components are free. And I also add a small bag of perlite to the brick of coconut coir when I expand it in water. Weight wise it makes kind of a heavy soil but drains well. And I use all kinds of things for top dressing. From the pebbles like you have, to lava rock and even crushed terracotta pots that have cracked or I've had to break to get them off the plant! Nothing wasted, the pots get a new purpose! From Morris park in the Ozarks have a great weekend!!! Peace,Love ,Plants!!!!!✌💖🌵🌹🌴🌷🌿🌸🌻🍀🌺
Yes, these Opuntias will grow very big when planted in the ground. I just wish I know how to prepare and cook them. You are lucky to be living on top of a soil medium “gold mine”. 😃 You have access to many for free. I remember those ancient arrow heads that you find. Those are so cool! Thank you Clyde!

I love that you use cinnamon to treat the cuts on your plants, I use it on my orchids when I cut the flower stems, it's such an awesome and versatile thing in the gardening hacks, I will also use it on my cacti now, you're awesome! Great video!

They are about six years now but they have not flowered for me yet.
I use a hacksaw to trim my opuntia.
I might need to do that on mine soon. Every year they grow bigger pads. 😄

It is cinnamon that you buy from the spice rack at the grocery. Pure ground cinnamon. 🙂

if you have a Dollar Tree in your area, you can get top dressing for $1. !Cheap! The little bags are about 3 lbs. Good buy. I found some real pretty alabaster chips there.

Summer is the time to repot cactus?
Spring and summer is the best because it gives them time to get settled before the cold winter sets in. 🙂
can you grow cacti Outdoor? I mean in rain, I live in India and it rains continuously during monsoon season?
This type of opuntia is more forgiving with water, as long as their roots are on well draining soil. Planting them on higher ground is best for you.

Your Opuntias are very perfect. A friend brought me a pad from hers, she lives in Texas but my pad is s growing in a weird shape. It also lost the spines. It might be growing in monstrose form.

Thankfully I have no problems with mealy bugs right now. I had them before but they are usually from those cactus or succulent that I just bought from the store. 50/50 alcohol and water with a couple drops dishwashing liquid does the trick for me. I don’t think the soil has anything to do with attracting mealy bugs though I may be wrong. But I notice that the mealies attack my weakest plants. They seem to sense my plants that are having health issues and they attack them first.
I use lava gravel.

@@CactusCaffeine I've only purchased in jar but when my mother was in Hospice care, a family picked pads from the hospice property & peeled them cut them in strips, boiled them until it was foamy, rinsed & boiled again, don't know for how long though. We were invited to eat these with rice & beans, delish! 😋
