That is a funky looking cactus. It looks like it has the potential to be huge. I admire your courage handling glochids without gloves. I am such a baby when it comes to getting pricked. Hahaha 🤪

I recently watched a video of this cactus in its homeland in the Dominican Republic. Lyn needs to get another place ready on the stairwell, it gets very tall.

Oh, Lyn, you're a godsend. It's been a bit of a rough morning, but that has instantly turned around, since I saw you uploaded a new video. That's a great looking Opuntia!! I rarely use gloves for anything anymore. I like to be able to feel everything, the roots, the soil, etc. For the spiny cacti, I put packing peanuts on the spines, and then wrap the whole thing in bubble wrap and brown paper. I feel like getting pricked by cacti is like a badge of honor, but maybe I'm weird LOL. Sending you love from across the pond!

Thats a brilliant idea to use packing peanuts on the spines and then wrap in bubble wrap and brown paper for handling the spiny ones, and yes haha getting pricked by cacti is like a badge of honor haha, so happy you enjoyed the video Ashley and so sorry to hear you had a rough morning, but happy that the video helped, thanks so much Ashley for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Thursday XXXX

I thought opuntia were so boring when I started growing cacti, silly I know but they are like weeds where I live and I thought they were all the same.... Now they are among my favorite cacti... Had no idea that there are so many different types, they are forgiving for the novice, they are so fun to watch new pads pop out and grow almost before your eyes, and easy to propagate.. Great video...beautiful opuntia.

I have a huge Opuntia engelmannii I grew from a seed over 20 years ago. It’s about 4’ tall and 3’ wide. It’s outgrown the pot it’s in and I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to repot it. Small cacti are not too much of a problem, but mine is gigantic. Might have to wrap it with a tarp and use a rope and pully. I’m not looking forward to it because I have been stabbed with the spines and glochid’s, and it’s really hard to get the glochids out.

    • @desertplantsofavalon

WOW thats amazing you have grown your Opuntia engelmannii from seed 20 years ago, I bet its incredible, argh yes with the glochids they are always the worst and so hard to get out of the skin, out of all the cacti I always dread repotting the Opuntias haha, good luck with the repotting and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and have an amazing plant powered weekend XXX

Why would they plant them in coconut fibre ? I don't think that it has much nutrition in it ? As we know, they do need nutrition. Are you in England ?

Lyn My greenhouse is on fire!!! Are you giving extra water? I am not sure what to be doing lol . I had to bring a lot of my succulents and aloes into the house and put them on windowsills everywhere lol. I am in the Midlands of Ireland my weather is much the same as yours.

    • @desertplantsofavalon

Hi there, oh my golly yes the weather here up in Belfast has been so hot especially with the heatwave last week, the polytunnel was roasting last week and reached 42c when it was 30c outside, I had to bring into the house some of my young cacti and succulents and many of my Epiphytic cacti during the heatwave as it was just too hot for them, and I was watering a lot of the cacti daily as they dried out so fast, this week has been much cooler and back to our typical Irish Summers haha, but it got hot in the polytunnel yesterday afternoon again, I do give them extra water on the hot days but I wait until the late evenings when the sun has gone down, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to the Midlands for a fantastic Thursday XXXX

Well those cactus need to stay outta the road!!! So they don't get squished flat like that!!!😂 Yes Lyn I agree, soils can vary from person to person. As long as it has good drainage and no peat!! I like to use the coconut coir in the mix to "fluff" it up. But not solid. Great repot video!!! Hahaha , you are like me!!! Hands on all the way!!
