The worst part of One Piece being a Shonen Battle manga is that there are so many fans that only care about the action and will take moments like these at face value. Rather than thinking "what does this mean for the story?" they think "what does this mean for power-scaling?"
Both can be true, I understand the themes of boonie and gear 5 but what's stop Bonnie using her distorted future on other's ex can she give anyone a Nika like future? Also it's called battle manga for a reason
@BlueCheeseLucci But that is literally not how her powers work. She can't just give random people other powers. Distorted future is an expression of a possible future she can see for herself, which is why her being a kid is so helpful in it's use. Plus she's only been shown to be able to do it for a limited amount of time. She'll get one or two attacks off before she has to revert.
@@BlueCheeseLucci Because Nika is what her vision of being Free is; Her powers are limited by her wonder as a child. Distorted Future is a play on how children can dream up countless futures for themselves; Think, a child saying they'll be an astronaut or movie star. So it's limited to her vision of her future; Meaning she will not be thinking that she can be like Kizaru or something. Specially since she doesn't like them
The more annoying part is that this doesn't mean ANYTHING for powerscaling because Bonney using this ability doesn't make her as strong as Luffy. I don't think people are even bothered by this because of powerscaling tbh I think it's just because they hate Gear 5. Complaints come up whenever something happens with this form. I think people are just using the Bonney thing as an excuse to hate on Gear 5.
@@mrstrangeworld5977powerscaling is just a part of storytelling, as was bonnie feeling that she was able to do everything because that is what luffy is. Luffy is the sole empowerment of hope. Yes gear 5 is an upgrade to luffy's powers, but it is also a symbol of hope and that makes gear 5 such a scary power up that just being around people is giving hope to those who need it and that is why the world government tried to get rid of the nika nika fruit
@@mrstrangeworld5977 u are right, powerscaling is important, oda has to balance bonnie out somehow otherwise we are going to ask ourselves questions like: "why doesn't she just turn into awakened kizaru or something", + only luffy should be the true nika although I like the idea of joyboy and joygirl fighting together and doing some combo moves
Bonnie only can transform into futures she sees as possible. Nika being the expression of being totally free, she at least can see herself totally free and that's why she can transform into that. She can't transform into anything she wants
besides, luffy would want someone else to transform just because it's cool. if bonney could use distorted future to shoot a laser, luffy would be even more psyched.
I feel like people are forgetting the fact that the few times she's used "distorted future", it's been for one singular move. I expect she'll revert back to normal once they do a big combined attack and push saint Marcus back so he can't keep following the ship. I think its less about her having Nika's abilities, and more about showing through the transformation that she actually feels like she's finally "free".
Just going to mention this, but she did use Distorted Future to change into a muscular form akin to Kuma or even Luffy when in gear 5 when he gives himself muscles. She transformed, chased and used it for a couple of strikes against Vegapunk. So it might be possible she can stay more time on a Distorted Future.
Fully agreed for a couple reasons: as you said, because that's consistently how her power's been shown. Also because their goal is literally just to beat him back to cover their escape. Overall it feels like a lot of people are kinda overreacting to Bonney's form here. It's cool and big for her as a buff and thematically. But as shown so far, it isn't THAT game-changing in the grand scheme of things and certainly doesn't break the power system.
@@kyeda I mean...the first bit is literally a fact though. Thus far, that's how it's been used. They didn't say it could never change, just that that's been the deal so far. Everything after was qualified by "I expect" and "I think", which is fair.
I'm baffled that people are conflicted on Bonney here; I've been waiting for this for weeks and it's probably the most thematically important moment in the arc, if not in One Piece as a whole. For hundreds of years an uncountable number of people have fought for freedom against tyranny, making small progress, setting plans into motion, inspiring people with their dreams and their wills so that they may be carried forward beyond even failure or death. By luck or by inevitability Luffy has become the recipient of these wills as he aspires towards his dream and fights tooth and nail for the dreams and the freedom of other people, and in doing draws others to support him. In the penultimate moment of the fight against Kaido, he fully actualizes and embodies those wills and that history by giving everything in a nearly hopeless struggle to free a whole people from unimaginable oppression, and incarnates into a symbol which embodies perfect freedom, and the joy which that ideal draws forth. That is all brilliant, and it is a logical step for this series as it reaches its conclusion to manifest its core themes in this way, but there is a problem. One Piece is a reflection of our own world, its themes and its history paralleling our own, and our own world is driven by a history of unfathomable horror, which in a Manga ostensibly for kids can only touch lightly upon those subjects. A group of unaccountable elites using military hegemony to enforce imperial rule upon the whole world? That military using force to cut down civilians affected by horrible labor conditions that cause adverse health effects? Slavery? A Japanese force made to create weapons for a world war? A fascist regime in a Spain-like country? Assuming that Oda wants us to apply the lessons he is teaching us to our own world; that he is passing on his knowledge and his beliefs and his will onto a new generation that will carry it into the future, how does he make the jump from the strange world of One Piece where these themes can manifest literally, in the form of devil fruits and haki, to our world where those themes manifest in less clear ways? He shows that a child, in spite of the horror of the world, can imagine a better future and fight for that future by looking to Luffy, and that they can fully embody that desire for freedom and achieve that dream. Bonney's power turns her dream into a reality, but when Saturn, a representative of the tyranny that would deny her freedom sees this, he tries to convince her that her dreams are not only impossible to achieve, but literally not real in the first place. Luffy, in contrast, physically embodies the reality of her dream, and encourages her to seek it and imagine it. She becomes that dream that she dreams for the future. One Piece is a reflection of our own world, its themes and its history paralleling our own, and when I see Bonney transform into Nika I can see, in the faintest glimpse, the dreams that I imagine for the future. I can imagine myself fighting for a better world. I can hope that I could embody Luffy and Joyboy and Nika. I can feel reassured knowing that even in death or in failure, my deeds or my words might inspire others to carry that torch in my absence. When that optimistic child imagines a future that is free and becomes Nika, it means that we can all do the same if, through acts of great courage and willpower, we choose to pursue that dream as well.
It's also symbolic of the hopes that we put on the next generation. The hope that we feel when we see a child look at the world with wonder in their eyes. Children are the future and this chapter was an amazing example of that idea.
i love that you brought up how young Bonney is too, because some people get SO MAD that a 12 year old girl is at this level in the end of the New World LMAO i think it's one of the smartest moves Oda has made, showing us that the youngest pirates, the ones with the most potential futures, will always be the ones who have the most chances to learn and grow from the mistakes that the elders of the world have made and in turn be the ones to usher in the brightest possible future for everyone else. because if children aren't allowed to dream, what kind of living hell have we adults created?
0:48 During Marineford the Snail phone that Buggy used shriveled up when dipped in salt water. It seems they behave like land snails and shrivel up or die when exposed to salt.
We as a fandom have a tendency to over think and make so many assumptions and final decisions before seeing the full conclusion. Same thing happened during the war in onigashima when Apoo damaged Luffy and Zoro, people hated it before we even got to see the full scene and it's the same thing here. Also Oda is just making a story that he himself would love to read, he wants to have fun drawing his own story and I have full faith in him. He gave us One Piece and with it Luffy and all the characters, their stories, sadness, happiness, anger and dreams. I will always be grateful for it.
Thinking both Ginny and Kuma, slaves since they were children, gave EVERYTHING including their own lives to make sure their daughter would not suffer the same, and now she has the faith and the power to imagine herself in a future where she is "the most free"... literally one of my new favorite One Piece panels. Thinking about powerscaling and who can punch who the hardest is such a disservice and such a sad reaction to this. Like, guys, this is all about JOY. BUGGY IS A YONKO, GUYS, STOP POWERSCALING AND COME DANCE WITH THE REST OF US.
Buggy being an Emperor doesn’t invalidate power scaling. He was made an Emperor through a hilarious series of events that is easy to follow. If Buggy was suddenly able to easily stomp Mihawk and Crocodile, that would be questionable.
@@HurricaneDDragon The fandom has been throwing around terms like yonko-level and admiral-level and the such for as long as I can remember. Makes absolutely no sense. Buggy is a yonko. Luffy defeated a insane logia just because he was rubber. It doesn't mean Yonkos are less powerful or Luffy is a worse protagonist, it just means One Piece is just not about powerscaling, it's about solid plot, in-depth themes and the usual goofiness. And Bonney's moment had nothing to do with how hard she can or cannot punch, and I think we all know it.
4:25 Actually he doesn't know the world government has the weapons. All he knows is the piece of the Mother Flame has been taken. He just doesn't know who. All he knows for a fact is someone stole a piece of the flame and is using a powerful ancient weapon. The only person that knows for a fact is his gluttonous and greedy version of himself. He's very smart he's just not very wise.
@@LookingForAName... I'm not underestimating him we know for a fact he didn't connect all the dots. All he knew was that the flame was taken and an earthquake had happened. He made the video before the Straw Hats even got there and even before Sabo just found out to be alive. He knew the government was coming to kill him for looking up the lost history. He did not know he got betrayed until the Straw Hats got there. For all he knows a pirate can have that weapon or another country. People are thinking we the readers know it he should know it which is not the case. I'm pretty sure one version of him will figure it out once this arc is over.
It doesn't bother me that Bonney can go into the Gear 5 form, even if you compare it to Luffy who went through hell to awaken it, I always felt a big thing with Luffy was you don't have to go through the hell he or anyone else has gone through to be happy or have a family, so HIM being the one to encourage Bonney to even try to do that form makes every bit of sense to me, and feels great!
@@joshuaname5776 we don't even know how her fruit works, it's all assumptions lmao. We don't even know if she's actually getting his powers or just mimicking them based on how she's seen his powers work. Just because she LOOKS like Gear 5th doesn't mean she's as strong as Gear 5th nor does it mean she's awakened.
@@joshuaname5776 thats an assumption, it works for HER. But distorted future doesnt seem to work for others since she cant imagine other futures or realities for them other than being old or young. Like how she made Luffy an ugly and frail old man,
@@joshuaname5776fine?!? I'd be so hyped it wouldn't even be funny. Imagine Robin being able to used her awakening combined with the Nika powers to litterally slingshot a buster call back at the navy, would be an amazing character moment for her to!
This elevates Bonney, Luffy and the very concept of "Nika" so much. It got me emotional when I read the final page. The struggle of individual and the inspiration to embody the ideals of Nika is what creates this myth of Nika. It's not a singular person. It's for the Masses by the Masses. And that's so One Piece which has every arc explore places and the actual common people who live there and their struggles.
@@deliii395 that seems to the singular argument for people that like Bonney going Nika, as if the rest of us who don't like it are just drooling idiots. It's bad writing and it lessens everything Luffy has ever been building toward. It has nothing to do with "punches"
I don't really feel like Bonnie struggled that much with the idea of freedom throughout Egghead. If anything, it feels like Bonnie's arc was sidelined to give Kuma's arc a greater resolution (seeing his daughter become the very symbol of freedom he lived his life by). This moment doesn't feel like a climactic win for Bonnie as a character, it's a win for Kuma, which is much less interesting in my opinion.
@@noahc1900 yo "Will he free me too?" Is one of the most significant dialogues of Bonney and her struggle to see a better future when confronted with Saturn & his systemic abuse of her family is literally what permeates and more significantly bookends the backstory and the arc.
Kuma is also watching Bonney achieve this because the person Kuma saved inspired Bonney. So Kuma is literally directly responsible for Bonney achieving this. I love that there's a "second" Nika. Luffy doesn't care about prophecy, he doesn't believe that he's destined for anything. Luffy never thought he was the one who was "supposed" to do anything, he just did what he thought was right because no one else either would or could. I think it is incredibly important to show that someone else, especially in this case a child, can do the same things Luffy can. You just have to believe in yourself and believe in your future. To paraphrase Stan Lee: "Anyone can be [Nika]"
Also another note regarding the Vegapunks still in play: - Both Lilith and Atlas are named after mythological figures who opposed the main gods in their respective tales (Lilith the Christian god, Atlas the Olympians in Greek Mythology), which nicely ties into them opposing the gods/divinity of the World Government. - York is named after the city of York in England, which was long considered the seat of Catholicism in England, and often banded together with the crown to enrich themselves (parallel with York allying with the WG to enrich herself/become a Celestial Dragon). This one is a bit more of a stretch, but my current reading behind her name.
You perfectly summed up why Bonney transforming into Nika is absolutely stunning from a narrative point of view. It feels nice to know that most OP-tubers actually read One Piece for its themes and less for its powerscaling.
12:56 props to Tissine! I'll definitely be buying this print at some point! I picked up a couple of the others and this will be an excellent addition (gonna wait for a few more so I can get several at once~)
i think its also important and emotionally amazing to note that the lesson Luffy is teaching Bonny is the same lesson that Kuma's dad tried to teach him right before he was shot. that no matter where you are, freedom and Joy is just a thought away, even when you are imprisoned or chased after by a giant death-bird you can always be free if you choose to be. to me that's amazing, and feels like a lesson that Oda is trying to teach his girls through the story.
If we get more of Vegapunks message, I think it will be finishing what professor Clover said and gives the name of the Acient Kingdom, but not musch more than that.
The last page of this chapter reminds me alto of the First time momo turned into his adult dragon form. We know he is not going to be as strong as Kaido, but Is great help to his allies and means alot in the subtext
I think Bonney cant copy df abilities, but she can imagine herself to be someone she knew to be real. Like she cant be an ice ice fruit user, but she can choose future where she is giant, or Buddha if she believes Buddha to be real If she could imagine a future where she ate like chop chop fruit then she is imagining a future where she didnt have her toshi toshi no me fruit power So while her belief in Nika lets her turn into Nika, maybe she can only copy what Luffy does, but Luffy pushes what we think Nika can do each time purely on instinct and letting df guide him. I am sure there are other limitations on it too But other than that, unlike Luffy, Bonney is pretty strong from the start, she got gear 3 equivalent and wrecked a CP8 agent when she turned 10, with not much combat experience beforehand
I think the reason Vegapunk didnt point a finger at the World Government is because like he said before, he isnt sure who is in the "Moral Right". He might also not have enough information based on his findings to say exactly WHO is the one making the world sink and he might not even know that they are leading the World Government in secrecy. Or he could be thinking about the average civilians safety and not wanting to cause all out war/revolt against the World Government which would likely result in the massacre of many islands. I think Vegapunk believes that Luffy will save the world and if thats the case he might only be interested in expressing "heres what the past was like" and "hey figure out how not to die by sinking into the ocean" and "Hey D people amongst you is blah blah blah".
I think no one’s gonna die anymore in this arc. My predictions for how to escape the birdie elder… Option 1: The Iron Giant emerges from the Water and grabs him. Option 2: The bird is going to sink the ship with a final fireball only to get brutally hit in the neck in the last second by the Thousand Sunny that’s been launched from the clouds with a Coup De Burst! 💪 Second one would be my favorite. 😂
Yeah, her power is all based on true, gebuibe belief, its so ppwerful because she is a child, meaning its a skill that just baturally cones easily to a child, i asume the ability becomes less powerful the less childlike you are, so most of the One Piece cast would never be able to do what Bonney does on account of beibg mature and jaded enough they'd never have the sort of belief on a future where they can become like that like Bonney and Luffy would
I have seen a lot of people complaining about the ending, that this came out of nowhere but... Bonney literally did this twice before. Once against the cp while she was escaping and once against Saturn before he broke her faith. So what's all the fus about?
They don't really have a narrative related reason, they're just mad another character can use Gear 5. The amount of haters for Gear 5 Bonney is around the same amount of hate Gear 5 got when it was initially revealed. She's no different to Sugar or Momo, she doesn't seem to have haki and is still learning the possibilities with her fruit, which is naturally nerfed by the fact that it gets weaker as she gets old.
I understand how people doesn't feel nice that Luffy had to do all the hard work to reach Gear 5 but also it was Luffy who encourage Bonney to be able to use Gear 5. Luffy really doesn't care all about Joyboy or Nikka. Everyone keeps calling him Joyboy or Nikka but to him, he is Luffy. To Luffy being the chosen one doesn't matter. He does what he wants. Saving the world is just the aftermath to his goal. But what if Luffyuses the power of Dreams to turn everyone into Nikka and Imu uses the power of Nightmares to turn the Elders to demons.
The best part is that Luffy didn't do any work at all to reach Gear 5. He didn't even entertain the thought of awakening his fruit once. He just "died" and somehow (read "Oda didn't even pretended like he gave a shit") the Nika fruit resurected him instead of leaving his body for a fruit.
@@Damnitgary she can imagine versions of herself and others but Luffy can truly modify his surroundings and himself according to his imagination Luffy made a baseball bat out of a regular tree. Thats a different level of imagination imo
Recently Oda mastered the art of let me have few 15 to 14 pages so I draw less But Let me cram so much content in so many panels and with this toei can potentially cook an entire anime episode out of these 14 pages Just add more dialogue more flair to the animation and the moves and the attacks etc highlight more some of the background back and forth comedic moments Boom Oda magic and somehow these 14 pages managed to fill a 24 minutes episode
I’ve been in the "Bonney's going to join the RA” camp for a while. And with these Nika-like powers, I can definitely see it. Because now, Bonney can act as an apostle for Nika the Sun God. At the same time, I’m also considering the “Bonney going to join the SHs” camp more than ever. Her turning into a Nika form feels very apprentice-coded. Especially with the way Luffy supports and recognizes her power like he does with all of his crew mates and friends. It goes into the themes of Luffy’s leadership that have been prevalent since Post-timeskip. Then again, Oda has always been good at the SHs’ power sets not overlapping too much. But I love the sentiment that the daughter of slaves can see herself as completely free. And I've seen many people worried that now they can spread Gear 5 like in Naruto. I don't see that. It’s not Luffy affecting Bonney. It’s just Bonney’s powers. Bonney’s powers come from belief. So it’s her belief that she can be free. It’s the reason it didn’t really work when she wanted a “Nika-like future” is because Nika isn’t about power or physical strength, it’s about freedom. And in this world and to Bonney, Nika is the embodiment of freedom. Plus, Bonney being a twelve-year-old, the same age as Oda’s core audience, allows Oda to tell his audience that anyone can be Nika, anyone can be free. And I think that’s really cool.
Bonnie becoming Nika is the greatest victory Luffy has achieved and is the perfect manifestation of Luffy's will and what his character is supposed to be. If there is one true goal that Luffy has, it's to strive for freedom for all of his friends and the world. Luffy's MO is not to just be strong to save others, it's to make a world where everyone is strong enough to save themselves and follow their dreams. Being able to inspire others to be just as free as the literal god of Freedom is Gear 5's whole purpose, with being strong as a side effect. It may have come up suddenly, but it has more than justified its existence by now. Nika's beat seems to compel others to laugh and dance in an infectious manner, and that same energy has now inspired a child of slaves to believe wholeheartedly that she deserves to be free. If Bonny COULDN'T become Nika with her fruit, a power that literally works to create a future that the user believes can happen, then G5 would have failed and had no use beyond a simple gag. Luffy wouldn't get frustrated that someone got his powers in a "cheap" way, he would be ecstatic to see that Bonny is able to act just as free as him.
The Snails are… well, literally snails, the ocean is saltwater and salt kills snails (though being inside the Iron Giant might be preventing/protecting the snail from coming into contact with the saltwater immediately). On a side note, I feel like it's all but confirmed at this point that Bonney is gonna join the Straw Hats as the apprentice of the crew. Luffy is quite directly taking on the Mentorship role towards Bonney and considering that she's been looking for Luffy/Nika and how much Nika ties into Bonney and Kuma's characters and backstories I think she's the perfect fit for the Final Straw Hat (assuming you don't consider Yamato/Vivi joining later on as being the Final crewmates, which I don't as they're practically honorary Straw Hats already)
I was watching someone react to fishman island and Franky says he finished a robot (Franky General) that Vegapunk didn't and now we have the Iron giant, love it.
Bonney is basically JoyGirl The Gorosei have noone but Saturn to blame for the situation they are put in Looking forward to how many chapters of reaction peace Oda can do lol
I feel throughout the story Luffy is the liberator not only because he physically beats the oppressors, but also because he ignites the fire in people to free themselves. What we saw mentioned in wano is the ability of the country to defend itself without Luffy. And now we have Blackbeard possibly going after the ancient weapon islands. So I think the story is setting up Luffy to not be the main liberator but the one who brings people to liberate themselves. So I think Bonney achieving true freedom might be the start of that. It’s just a theory but it makes sense to me.
We hear a few common sentiments and a lot of assumption in the dislike of this single panel. I think there are clear themes and there is clear messaging here that contradicts these rare criticisms. While he once said that he writes for a target audience of his 15-year old self, Eiichiro Oda has two daughters, one of which is about 14-15 years old. What message do you think he wants her to take away from this thematic beauty? Is it "it's only okay if he NERFs her, and she's weak..." Or "she shouldn't be comparable to the mighty main character..." Or "she needs to go to an orphanage, and not fight for her own freedom..." I think he said "this one's for you, my daughters... I want you to believe you can do anything - even defeat monsters and become like gods." And I want Bonney to be able to do something cool, too. What do you think? 🙂 Cheers, UA-cam!
Thank you for your so well expressed review, I really was moved when I saw Bonnie in her freest form, I remembered all the suffering that Ginny went through as well as all the sacrifices that Kuma made, after "living" all his life in slavery, finally all his efforts are paid seeing his daughter free, but I do think too that he's going to do the final sacrifice soon, if he dies with a smile in his lips it will be sad but so beautiful. Keep doing the reviews please, the OP community clearly needs some more level headed and mature people doing the reviews.
Cool video Merphy. Regarding Vegapunk not blaming the WG for the destruction of the islands: What I understood is that he can't confirm that the WG stole the Mother Flame. He knows that someone stole a part of the Mother Flame, and then used Uranus to destroy Lulusia, but he doesn't know what side did it for sure when he filmed the broadcast. He has incomplete information and I assume that his position is "Unless that I can assure everyone that the WG did it, I am not going to say it". We as readers know it, but Vegapunk doesn't. For him, maybe there is a faction hiding that follows JoyBoy's ideas and has possession of Uranus since JoyBoy wanted to protect the Ancient Weapons.
With this chapter, it became clear to me that this wasn’t Vegapunk’s arc. It wasn’t the Gorosei’s arc. It wasn’t Kuma’s arc. It was Bonney’s arc. And that final panel is the culmination of that arc. When I read it, I was filled with joy, as was clearly intended. I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the people complaining about Sun God Bonney were people complaining about Gear Fifth in the first place.
I loved when Sanji was saying I'll save you, and Robin, and Lillith and Usopps like us too and Franky just chips in with 'and I'll save the ship' 'Save me too!'
I like to think of it from a Luffy POV. If everyone gets to be Nikki, then everyone can be as free as him, and I think that would make him extremely happy. It also fits with what Nikka is meant to be, a bringer of liberation. Luffy seeing his friends and allies do as they please would be his ultimate win. It might not be a great pay off for us to see his power replicated so easily, but I can't see it bringing anything other than joy to our boy. PLUS, imagine Luffy's reaction to a Nikka form General Franky
I especially love the pannel where bonney asks kuma what nika looks like in order to imagine herself transforming into him, and kuma didn't know so she couldn't do it until she saw and confirmed through stella that luffy is nika to transform into him. Incredible writing and obvious foreshadowing.
I love this for Bonney. It fits so well with the story that Oda has been telling this arc. I hope Oda handles it correctly. We know Bonney can't keep up Distorted Future for long and I think their should be some restrictions to the power. Like maybe it can only imagine Zoan powers or physical atteibutes and not let's say the Dark-Dark fruit and then she could just use it. And also we know she is restricted by information. So if I say turn into a future where you have Kaido's Azure Dragon fruit, she wouldn't be able to do it accurately.
Exactly, people say she can copy DF but so far all she has done is change her bodily shape which certainly emulates other fruits but that’s just because she’s modeling it off the stories of Nika/being free which she doesn’t realize a fruit is responsible for Luffy’s Nika form.
I liked the Bonnika reveal, you could see it coming since 1101 and it means a lot. What I want to see from Bonnika is her having a different power set manifested. Her body can be all stretchy because of the Distorted Future affecting her but I want to see her age powers rolling out like a wave on everything. Because this is not her as Nika, this is her at her freest, it has her core identity in it. Imagine this: Bonney in this form - what I consider her full awakening of her fruit, it's only fair - and as the drums beat, swathes of age jewels jump out of everyone around them, making everyone jovial. Those jewels fall down to the sea in a glittering rain like Starfall, making the sky look doubled with the sea. Or maybe: her distorted future affects everything she touches, the middle age giants go back to their peak form, the ship restores itself, the giant robot is in pristine condition, Franky is in a future where he has the powers of a Pacifista, her dad is back... All because in her freest form, her particular powers have no limits, the Nika form is but an image to represent that she has managed to awaken herself and bring out her image of an Utopic future. I find all of these possibilities way more interesting than just being able to replicate Luffy, and more in theme too! It's not because she looks like Nika that she'll act just like Luffy, the user of the devil fruit of Nika, she'll act on what she believes Nika should be. All these unique possibilities get me very excited to see what happens.
I know I'm a few weeks late, but after this chapter, I can confidently say Bonney is a top 3 One Piece character for me. I love her transforming into Nika for all of the reasons you mentioned. The theming of all of this has been perfect. I seriously will never understand the people that care more about the definitive ranking of who is more powerful than the fact that this is one of the best character moments in the entire series! I'm genuinely thinking up a Bonney/Luffy in Nika form tattoo because I love this so much
That beautiful art piece perfectly depicts the meaning of that moment, and One Piece in a whole. Through all the dark, unbreakable will and complete faith in your beliefs is what will bring you to the Sun. Forget power scaling, that’s not the point. Generations of suffering came to this moment for Kuma. Actions speak louder words… *I WILL BE FREE!* ~ Bonney, to her Dad
This is one of the best thumbs I've seen, imho. It's incredible. My only quibble is that the coloration of Nika skin on them both should be ghostly/angelic/mystical, not a realistic tan color.
One of yhe interesting yhings about this weeks great art is if you frame this and put this up someone watching one piece up almost wano would see this and have no idea whats going on but know its beautiful and thats enough.
this woman, is in a bnb, as if she just get in the room after a long trip, yet her hair is immaculate and her face is still "I just had a spa time" happy and look really excited, not only I envy her energy talking about the chapter, but if it were me, I would just be looking like someone had just used my face and hair for a mop to clean the floor... Anyway, loved the chapter, loved the review, keep up the good work!
If Bonney was put on her ass after like 15 seconds of Dustorted Future: Giant when she was fighting Venus, shes probably only gonna be good for a few seconds in her Gear 5 future and then she'll be out. Distorted Future essentually gives her the ability to, under the right circumstances, mimic the powers of other Devil Fruits or races but shes trading efficiency for versatility. Shes not gonna be able to do as much with it as Luffy who is specialized into it
It pisses me off the hypocrisy of Vegapunk, like you said, not discussing morality on the government actions, and now basically his message was totally in vain, it literally made no difference to say that the world will sink, if he doesn't point who will be the responsible for this. The only thing he accomplished was to make the world hate Luffy.
MY BABY GIRL IS FREEEEEEEEE😭 i actually couldnt stop crying this chapter, Bonney and Kuma have very quickly shot up the ranks in my heart and seeing her finally speak with Nika and realize that the future DOES have a bright path ahead just fills me with too many emotions dude. her entire life she's been waiting for this moment and now she is fighting SIDE BY SIDE with the Warrior of Liberation himself in the face of everything that has ever hurt her and her family as for the power scaling combat level side of it, i dont believe Bonney is truly in a Gear 5 state like Luffy. she is in a form that she believes to be equal to Luffy, but since neither of them really understand the power of Nika she can't ever reach his same level. she will most likely be STUPID strong, just like when we first saw Gear 5, but i wouldn't be shocked if she gets hit by the immense blowback and strength drain from using it just like Luffy did in the fight against Kaido. she's going to have to take just as much time as Luffy, if not more, to train this transformation and maintain it without totally wiping out mid battle. ALSO KEEP IN MIND: her Fruit LITERALLY allows her to become anything she envisions as long as she CAN envision it, so i don't see why people are upset about her becoming Nika. we've BEEN knew that her fruit is fucking absurd and that her limits have always only ever been her imagination LMAO either way, im personally ecstatic that she has unlocked this power and i think it makes perfect sense story-wise
I loved it. I guess I can see why people are upset, but, to me, it just makes sense all around. For Kuma and for Bonney, it is the crescendo to their arc. For Luffy, it's just more of what he does. Inspire, mentor, and trigger change in those who need it. He's done that with everyone on his crew, Vivi, Boa, Rebecca, Shirahoshi, and Momonsuke. Bonney had it in her, she had been trying to achieve this form based of what her father told her. Now that she's seen the real deal, it was a no-brainer that she would achieve it. Luffy just had to show her how and he did. To me it doesn't cheapen Luffy's struggles or his hard work. Just like how a big brother or big sister's struggles and hard work aren't cheapened when showing their kid sibling how to do something. To Luffy, it's not a bother. The only way it would be bothersome for him is if they are constantly crying that they can't do it. Bonney hasn't, she's even said to Luffy "Show me how it's done then!" Big brother mocking little sister for not getting it. Little sister shouting back to show her or shut up. Big brother shows off, little sister learns to do it in her own way.
18:48 I have a different way of thinking about this. If Luffy hadn’t spent all this time working on this, hadn’t spent all this time training and fighting, this moment wouldn’t be possible. Luffy’s efforts gave Bonney this freedom. Gave Bonney this form to emulate. She couldn’t have imagined this otherwise.
I may have commented this already, but I think Nami is doing most of the managing of the Straw Hats. She coordinates her group, like sending Jinbe to fetch Zoro. And Sanji and her have both been asking the other how their group is doing whenever they contact each other.
19:33 I think distorted future is an ability Bonney can only use on herself. Unless she called it on someone else and then aged them that Im forgetting about. I don't think she'll be turning anyone else into a Nika any time soon.
@Nellie-Brooks looking at the chapters, it just happens off-screen, and what she does is consistent with her powers and how she's used it one other's. I guess what I'm trying to say is that her powers probably work vaguely on others, and she can create a more precise future for herself. I just super doubt she'll be able to power other people up with her ability.
A thought just crossed my mind about the Vegapunks...what if it's not that York is "evil" per se but that she interpreted and evaluated that, with what they learned about the lost century, the WG was on the right side? What if among the VPs there is an unknown divide between those that evaluated things differently about the whole story, ones that saw Joy Boy as right, those that saw WG as right and those that were neutral like Stella? Right now, without the whole story, there cannot be a moral judgment. We the readers have been judging it like we do because WG not only did evil stuff but they also are the antagonist of the SH but there is a possibility that at the end of it we could see things in a different light
It's so odd to me that so many people are angry on Luffy's behalf or feel some kinda way about it when Luffy himself would not understand any of that. Look at his progression through the series: at every island he tries to empower people and make them free. This is especially obvious when you look at the brother/sister type relationships with characters like Vivi, Shirahoshi, Rebecca, and Tama. He didn't give them Gear 5 forms but he helped empower all of them to stand up for what they want and he made them free in that sense. He already clearly cared about Bonney and her bond with Kuma (he even apologized to an absent Bonney before punching S-Bear) so why would he NOT share this with her and be happy for her? As a big brother, I always wanted to take care of my little sister and make things easier for her. I openly cried at this chapter almost as much as when Vegapunk threw the switch because Luffy is helping make both her and Kuma's dream come true. Why would Luffy resent that?
We should ask ourselves about who got Bonnie devil fruit in the void century 🤔(I would love a good flashback about Lily having Kuma fruit, Joyboy nika and possibly somebody else having those "future distortion abilities" as enemies that made Imu and the Gorosei angrier 😱🥶🎃💖🖤)
I, for one, am actually hype for the next chapter with Nika-Bonney. Previously everything gear-5-Luffy did (attacks wise) was really fun to see, so I’m really exited for the combo moves Luffy and Bonney could perform. I’m also not really of the opinion that Bonney transforming into a Nika-form doesn’t make sense. It was established that her distorted future ability only works as well as her capacity to believe/hope in what she wants. So it makes sense she can transform into Nika (and not any other devil fruits) because of the strong bond she has with the concept of Nika. Bonney has praying to Nika and dreaming of Nika for all her life (thanks to Kuma). Also Luffy literally reignited her belief in Nika a few chapters ago, so her belief is stronger than ever. To be honest, I’m not really thinking too much if that makes sense “power-scaling wise”, I just think it was foreshadowed character wise and feels earned for her. Bonney and Kuma have been through a lot. Bonney has earned the right to feel as free as Nika, I’d say. Also Bonney has been experimenting with her powers since she was a child so it also technically took a lot of time for Bonney to reach a high skill level with her distorted future ability. I’m honestly not that worried for what Oda has in store for this situation.
It's one thing to transform but to just imagine a future where you're free, I wonder how much of an awakening is actually there, in Bonney, or of its visual with some of the wild movements of G5
Personally I like the idea that luffy can share his Nika form. We've seen him affect friends with the eye popping already, so why not step it up? But I don't think they will have his powers, more like getting all rubbery, since it seems to be a side effect of the Nika fruit rather than it's actual power. It'll make the strawhats more tanky but still need their abilities to achieve anything
The "but Luffy worked so hard to reach this point" angle is probably the most (only) sane angle that I've seen from the backlash, and I do get it. My perspective is that Bonney's transformation would not even be within the realm of possibility if Luffy hadn't unlocked his first. So it's not that Luffy's arduous journey was invalidated, it's more like his efforts have unlocked a new level of freedom and power against oppression for not only himself, but for Bonney as well (and possibly others). The idea of laughter and joy being contagious would lend itself well to there being a whole JoyCrew one day, although personally I would prefer if it was just limited to Luffy and a watered-down version in Bonney.
Scientists aren’t usually known for being the best communicators of their ideas (science communicators doing great work bridging the gap) so the issues with Vegapunk’s message felt pretty realistic to me if not also a bit contrived
From “I’ll do reviews on break weeks” to “I’m traveling but need to make a review” lol
my favorite character development 🤣
We all knew it was coming. She just didn't yet LoL
The One Piece fan character development that we all go through

"Everyone has the same power to change the future" - Bege during Whole Cake Island
@@BlueCheeseLucci one piece has never just been a battle manga one of few that focuses on world building and themes.
I think people are just using the Bonney thing as an excuse to hate on Gear 5.
merphy knows and expresses the excitement of reading one piece all too well...
I'm glad you brought up how thematically beautiful this moment is for Bonnie. I think some people get lost in the "powerscaling" sauce
powerscaling is important
Allways, and worst, its a bad powerscaling
I can't imagine Luffy kicking the ladder, being like, "I worked hard for this freedom, so you can't have it." Seems antithetical to the story.
You.
You get it.
I can see him doing that for meat, though. 😂
Genuinely... Gear 5 is Luffy at his most Luffy as well...
besides, luffy would want someone else to transform just because it's cool.
if bonney could use distorted future to shoot a laser, luffy would be even more psyched.
Yes! This! Feels like many of the peeps who hate it are very narrow-minded. They'll never get Luffy, ever. 😂 Which is too bad.
Like 2 chapters ago we saw that she couldn't hold the giant future for very long. Very confused by people mad at this even from a power scaling point
And let's not forget the importance haki holds in power scaling, Bonnie is still far from Luffy's level even if she can mimic his gear 5th
Bonney spends most of her childhood locked inside, literally unable to see the sun.
And now she becomes the sun god.
Copy cat Nika cheerleader gloried clone is lazy…😕
@@CrimsonKaiserx8lol how can this be lazy when it was set up since the arc started ?????
Dude 👍👌👏
Beautiful!
i love that you brought up how young Bonney is too, because some people get SO MAD that a 12 year old girl is at this level in the end of the New World LMAO
i think it's one of the smartest moves Oda has made, showing us that the youngest pirates, the ones with the most potential futures, will always be the ones who have the most chances to learn and grow from the mistakes that the elders of the world have made and in turn be the ones to usher in the brightest possible future for everyone else.
because if children aren't allowed to dream, what kind of living hell have we adults created?
This was a beautiful read, thank you so much for this. It really is an incredible moment for the series
Bonney expressing that desire to be free and manifesting it made me tear up considering her and her family's story. Really beautiful
Tissine has outdone herself this time. My favorite piece by her so far!
I think for me the one where Kuma travels down memory lane as his consciousness is about to get wiped out is still the best.

@@Miss_All_SundaysDon't engage or encourage their nonsense. Just ignore them, they'll only spoil the dance if we invite them to it!
I think you're underestimating Vegapunk's ability to connect the dots. This is not a wisdom issue, this is straight intelligence.
I think regardless of connecting the dots Vegapunk said he is not going to speculate and that’s exactly what he’s doing. Saying only the facts.
Yes 🔥

This elevates Bonney, Luffy and the very concept of "Nika" so much. It got me emotional when I read the final page. The struggle of individual and the inspiration to embody the ideals of Nika is what creates this myth of Nika. It's not a singular person. It's for the Masses by the Masses. And that's so One Piece which has every arc explore places and the actual common people who live there and their struggles.
It's a slap to the face of 25years of Luffys character development

To paraphrase Stan Lee: "Anyone can be [Nika]"
this has to be tissine’s best piece yet, the description made me cry so many happy tears. my heart aches for kuma ❤
Also another note regarding the Vegapunks still in play:
- Both Lilith and Atlas are named after mythological figures who opposed the main gods in their respective tales (Lilith the Christian god, Atlas the Olympians in Greek Mythology), which nicely ties into them opposing the gods/divinity of the World Government.
She really so talented
i think its also important and emotionally amazing to note that the lesson Luffy is teaching Bonny is the same lesson that Kuma's dad tried to teach him right before he was shot. that no matter where you are, freedom and Joy is just a thought away, even when you are imprisoned or chased after by a giant death-bird you can always be free if you choose to be. to me that's amazing, and feels like a lesson that Oda is trying to teach his girls through the story.
Tissine always knocks it out of the park, but this one may be her best so far, or at least it might be my favorite so far. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Like she cant be an ice ice fruit user, but she can choose future where she is giant, or Buddha if she believes Buddha to be real
If she could imagine a future where she ate like chop chop fruit then she is imagining a future where she didnt have her toshi toshi no me fruit power
So while her belief in Nika lets her turn into Nika, maybe she can only copy what Luffy does, but Luffy pushes what we think Nika can do each time purely on instinct and letting df guide him.
I am sure there are other limitations on it too
But other than that, unlike Luffy, Bonney is pretty strong from the start, she got gear 3 equivalent and wrecked a CP8 agent when she turned 10, with not much combat experience beforehand
how is vegapunk's message not satisfying? the implications of the water rising are absolutely crazy and redefines the whole world
I think the reason Vegapunk didnt point a finger at the World Government is because like he said before, he isnt sure who is in the "Moral Right".
Your hair is fucking amazing
I think no one’s gonna die anymore in this arc.
My predictions for how to escape the birdie elder…
Option 1: The Iron Giant emerges from the Water and grabs him.
Option 2: The bird is going to sink the ship with a final fireball only to get brutally hit in the neck in the last second by the Thousand Sunny that’s been launched from the clouds with a Coup De Burst! 💪
Second one would be my favorite. 😂
I think bonney can only really fully become what she can actually understand, as well
Similarly, I believe her ability can be influenced with literal role models.
Yeah, her power is all based on true, gebuibe belief, its so ppwerful because she is a child, meaning its a skill that just baturally cones easily to a child, i asume the ability becomes less powerful the less childlike you are, so most of the One Piece cast would never be able to do what Bonney does on account of beibg mature and jaded enough they'd never have the sort of belief on a future where they can become like that like Bonney and Luffy would
0:10 Merphy being out of character for once XD
I'm so proud of you properly theorizing that the message would continue. You are awesome.
Woah that commission art is gorgeous. I've set it as my desktop background. Amazing job, tissine.
One of the best Tissine pieces so far, made me mist up.
I have seen a lot of people complaining about the ending, that this came out of nowhere but... Bonney literally did this twice before. Once against the cp while she was escaping and once against Saturn before he broke her faith. So what's all the fus about?
True 👊💪
They don't really have a narrative related reason, they're just mad another character can use Gear 5. The amount of haters for Gear 5 Bonney is around the same amount of hate Gear 5 got when it was initially revealed. She's no different to Sugar or Momo, she doesn't seem to have haki and is still learning the possibilities with her fruit, which is naturally nerfed by the fact that it gets weaker as she gets old.
Piratefolk subbers are just collaborating
Exactly this wasn't a surprise. It's not like it's the first time she's done anything like this.
His power is imagination. He told Bonney, “I believe you can do it”
So yea I think Bonney’s able to do this because Luffy’s there
The best part is that Luffy didn't do any work at all to reach Gear 5. He didn't even entertain the thought of awakening his fruit once. He just "died" and somehow (read "Oda didn't even pretended like he gave a shit") the Nika fruit resurected him instead of leaving his body for a fruit.
@@solidkwonI think Bonneys power is imagination
@@Damnitgary she can imagine versions of herself and others but Luffy can truly modify his surroundings and himself according to his imagination
Luffy made a baseball bat out of a regular tree. Thats a different level of imagination imo
Recently Oda mastered the art of let me have few 15 to 14 pages so I draw less
But
Let me cram so much content in so many panels and with this toei can potentially cook an entire anime episode out of these 14 pages
Just add more dialogue more flair to the animation and the moves and the attacks etc highlight more some of the background back and forth comedic moments
Boom Oda magic and somehow these 14 pages managed to fill a 24 minutes episode
Summed it up perfectly.
100% agree
That art piece brought me to tears
Tissine’s art blows me away every week, the best OP artist I have ever seen!
That art is incredible!!
I was watching someone react to fishman island and Franky says he finished a robot (Franky General) that Vegapunk didn't and now we have the Iron giant, love it.
Bonney is basically JoyGirl
The Gorosei have noone but Saturn to blame for the situation they are put in
Looking forward to how many chapters of reaction peace Oda can do lol
this rapidly became my favorite op review channel. such great insight.
9:53 Thank you SO much for pointing that out. I was looking for that... LOL
Is it "it's only okay if he NERFs her, and she's weak..." Or "she shouldn't be comparable to the mighty main character..." Or "she needs to go to an orphanage, and not fight for her own freedom..."
I think he said "this one's for you, my daughters... I want you to believe you can do anything - even defeat monsters and become like gods." And I want Bonney to be able to do something cool, too.
What do you think? 🙂 Cheers, UA-cam!
Didnt realize he has 2 teenage daughters. That makes so much sense
I loved when Sanji was saying I'll save you, and Robin, and Lillith and Usopps like us too and Franky just chips in with 'and I'll save the ship'
'Save me too!'
18:20 I was in thr middle of typing this as you got to this point.
I like seeing Saturn's potential downfall coming from his own machinations
You perfectly articulated my feelings towards this chapter
12:47 Luffy's teeny, tiny straw hat makes me so happy!
I never doubt that you couldn't misunderstood oda and in this vid ...... you show how beautiful this sequenceus. !!! perfectly!!!
You described exactly how I felt about this chapter
Actions speak louder words…
*I WILL BE FREE!* ~ Bonney, to her Dad
Jesus this is the best thumbnail/ art she has done for you I think
This is one of the best thumbs I've seen, imho. It's incredible. My only quibble is that the coloration of Nika skin on them both should be ghostly/angelic/mystical, not a realistic tan color.
One of yhe interesting yhings about this weeks great art is if you frame this and put this up someone watching one piece up almost wano would see this and have no idea whats going on but know its beautiful and thats enough.
The artwork as usual amazing ❤
this woman, is in a bnb, as if she just get in the room after a long trip, yet her hair is immaculate and her face is still "I just had a spa time" happy and look really excited, not only I envy her energy talking about the chapter, but if it were me, I would just be looking like someone had just used my face and hair for a mop to clean the floor...
Anyway, loved the chapter, loved the review, keep up the good work!
Finally a youtuber who does not go with the flow of what other youtubers are saying
And yes lets trust in oda for now
It continues to have the balance of the humour, and the charm, and the here's my hairbrush.
Shes not gonna be able to do as much with it as Luffy who is specialized into it
Love the videos and emotion you put into them. Thanks for the content!
MY BABY GIRL IS FREEEEEEEEE😭
i actually couldnt stop crying this chapter, Bonney and Kuma have very quickly shot up the ranks in my heart and seeing her finally speak with Nika and realize that the future DOES have a bright path ahead just fills me with too many emotions dude.
her entire life she's been waiting for this moment and now she is fighting SIDE BY SIDE with the Warrior of Liberation himself in the face of everything that has ever hurt her and her family
as for the power scaling combat level side of it, i dont believe Bonney is truly in a Gear 5 state like Luffy. she is in a form that she believes to be equal to Luffy, but since neither of them really understand the power of Nika she can't ever reach his same level. she will most likely be STUPID strong, just like when we first saw Gear 5, but i wouldn't be shocked if she gets hit by the immense blowback and strength drain from using it just like Luffy did in the fight against Kaido.
she's going to have to take just as much time as Luffy, if not more, to train this transformation and maintain it without totally wiping out mid battle.
ALSO KEEP IN MIND: her Fruit LITERALLY allows her to become anything she envisions as long as she CAN envision it, so i don't see why people are upset about her becoming Nika. we've BEEN knew that her fruit is fucking absurd and that her limits have always only ever been her imagination LMAO
either way, im personally ecstatic that she has unlocked this power and i think it makes perfect sense story-wise
Bonney hasn't, she's even said to Luffy "Show me how it's done then!"
Big brother mocking little sister for not getting it.

I love the thumbnail background
that final scene really had me in tears
I may have commented this already, but I think Nami is doing most of the managing of the Straw Hats.
She coordinates her group, like sending Jinbe to fetch Zoro. And Sanji and her have both been asking the other how their group is doing whenever they contact each other.
19:33 I think distorted future is an ability Bonney can only use on herself. Unless she called it on someone else and then aged them that Im forgetting about. I don't think she'll be turning anyone else into a Nika any time soon.
She used it on Luffy at the start of Egghead when she turned him into his bad timeline self.
5:32 All the innovation, yet Vegapunk could not manage to have and enjoy his coffee beforehand.
He has poor time management
Love the tiny strawhat in the artpiece
It makes sense thematically, I like it
We should ask ourselves about who got Bonnie devil fruit in the void century 🤔(I would love a good flashback about Lily having Kuma fruit, Joyboy nika and possibly somebody else having those "future distortion abilities" as enemies that made Imu and the Gorosei angrier 😱🥶🎃💖🖤)
Now I want this art in the next chapter!
The message is done best not no to expect more .
We get good set info and now oda will leave us with a bunch of question and that is it .
I believe VP was building up to the point where he was going to expose the WG and just hadn't gotten to it yet.
