I wish all tech be open source code with free install of operating systems both on body and lenses with apps and add one, like on PC or smartphone. This old enclosed stuff is just bad
Thank you so much, great feedback 🙌🏾. I am using a manual lens here but you can change custom buttons in MAGIC LANTERN MENU PREFS (Wrench icon) CUSTOMISE BUTTONS.
@@Altcine thanks! I also mostly use vintage lenses so I just change the fX then. I am quite need to filming in general so the eos m really forces you to learn alot :)
Vintage is the way to go, they just have an unbeatable look. It's good you're willing to learn on the m. Stick with it because every camera will be child's play after. Not just shooting but you'll learn so much about raw, codecs & containers, grading, bit depth.... everything.
I have an issue, where in photo mode (dial set on photo), whether using ML or not, the shutter won't work with autofocus lens…I have no clue why this can happen, I have tried all focus settings, I can't get the EOS M to even single AF on a subject, so I'm stuck using autofocus lens in manual mode, in photo and in movie mode. I mainly shoot with the manual 7artisans 25mm1.7, but have bought a used EF-M 15-45mm specifically thinking that I could use it to autofocus, as a way to speed up point focusing (not constant focusing) rather than using Magic Zoom each and everytime. Is this a know issue, especially in Photo mode? I get that in Movie mode, ML might not have yet accepted autofocusing lens, but simply taking pictures should work using Photo mode. Any ideas?
Hey , on my two EOS M's crop mood works great in 1x3 5.2k - but works continuesly only in 10Bit (12 or 14bit gives me few seconds of recording only) and also just in my case 192Mhz works almost every time, while 240Mhz NEVER worked for my for my 64 and 128GB Sandisk cards. one is 95MBs and the 128GB is 175MBs * but basically they are the same write speed cards.
Yeah unfortunately that's the way it is. Apparently the data is being read differently and it's very sensitive to light. Try dropping to UHD 14bit. It's a good option.
I have the older 95MB/s Sandisk Card in 32GB Version but it does not work for me even I setup my Canon 100D (SL1 with the magiclantern-crop_mood.2023Aug19.100D101 image) exactely with the same settings like you explained. It stops recording after 2 seconds. Are there any other SD Cards, which are better then the SanDisk Extreme Pro for Crop Mood?
Thanks very much for this video! I have had my EOS-M since it was initially released. I remember it getting quite a bad rep due to its "slow" autofocus and also it being an early model mirrorless camera, but look at it now! I apologize for the newbie question but how are you correcting exposure on the fly while recording? I have looked at customize buttons but that did not help. I am in manual mode for movie recording using the 18-55mm kit lens.
Yes it's insane what it can do now but I'm more impressed that you've had it since release 😯 I'm using a manual lens here. The only way to do it on electronic lens is with an Nd but you probably knew that. Thank you 🙌🏾
@@Altcine Thanks for the super quick reply! I had my suspicion you were using a manual lens and honestly thought there was a way to do this for electronic lenses or adjust this on the fly but I will look into the Nd filter. After this crop mood release, I'm really starting to head down the rabbit hole wondering how I can shoot great footage for an upcoming family event. So now I'm looking at cages, gimblals, lenses etc. A lot to parse through, do you think something like your red komdo build would be appropriate? Thanks again.
Well there is one way you could achieve it but it's using iso. I wouldn't go higher than 400iso and it'll be noticeable in the video. I understand that changing aperture would be preferable but it's not possible. If you want to do the iso way, let me know.
The M-Lite is really designed for productions and whilst it does offer many benefits it's bigger than the tiny m. Watch any Komodo run/gun video about rigging & gimbal and the M-Lite is pretty much the same deal.
I know this comment is a bit late, but is there any new fixes to MLs rolling shutter? I have a video Im trying to salvage where the subjects warp constantly because of the 34ms readout speed. it would be a great camera if I could find out how to get rid of that.
I doubt there will be any improvement to rolling shutter. You should try GYROFLOW. Brandon Li has a great recent video on it and it might solve your problem.
I'm sure I just missed it, but I can't seem to find the source of the problem where my EOS M only shoots a couple of seconds, then stops. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I am a beginner who just bought the Canon eos M. How do you change the exposure to make the red camera turn green when recording? I got the recommended 95 Sandisk extreme card. Thank you!
There could be a couple things causing this but there's very little information in your post. Resolution, aspect ratio, bit-rate etc without that info it's hard to guide you. Also depends on the card....is it old, real or fake? Head over to the Facebook group and we will help you.
@@Altcine I think I may have got a fake card! I ran the benchmark on my card and it only has about 20 mb/s of write speed. I just bought a Samsung EVO Plus 256 gb 130 mb/s (white casing) SD card which will work well with the EOS M according to the ML discord. I will play with it more and see what happen. @@yingtianfu excellent. Unfortunately there's lots of fakes around. The Samsung card is very good, I tested the white one and it works well. Take care 🙌🏾
@@Altcine I figured out what the issue was! My Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s 128 GB card worked well after I set the AccessMode from SDR104 to SDR50 from SD Overlock submenu. I was then able to receive a write speed of 76.2 mb/s according to the card benchmark. But anyway, thank you so much for trying to help me! I learned a lot from your channel!
Hopefully you're in manual mode and you can change your iso in the canon menu to 100. You should now be able to change it in mL or by setting up custom buttons in ml.
@@Altcine Another question, I can't view my recorded videos on my EOS M screen, for playback, is it normal? I can import them in the MLV app on my laptop though.
Ahhh damn, there's a very simple fix for this but can't remember what it is. We we're discussing this with someone else about a week ago. I thought it was because the person didn't activate mlvplay but it turned out to be something totally unrelated. Go to the Facebook group, the answer is there.

heya mate! firstly a huge thank you for these videos, and to helping people like myself trouble-shooting - super appreciated 🙏 I've just got an eos m with the August edition of Cropmood, but it won't record in 5K. It'll record about 1 second before cutting out, but it can record in 1080. Do you have any idea where I should be looking for this fix? My SD is Sandisk 64gb extreme pro 200mb/s Cheers again!
Hi, thank you mate. In 5k you may have to drop the bitrate to 10bit. Also, shooting in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio will also increase record time. This is all done in the Crop Mood settings...NOT in the raw tab settings.
Update for anyone who may be having the same problem (it happened again) Going 10 bit, upgrading my sd and downgrading my cropmood (from Aug edition to May) has fully done the job 🙌
Will this 10% increase in heat become a problem for those of us that still have unmoddified eosms. And... the newer faster cards are slower? I hope this Is something that can be fixed.
Hi, it's not really a problem as it's still within the tolerance so you shouldn't have any problems unless you live in a very hot climate but yes...the unmodified m does run a little warmer. With the M-Lite fan it runs much cooler, around mid 30's. Try it though as you might not notice any difference.

Admittedly I don't understand much about the EOS M. But because advancements such as Crop Mood are still being achieved, might one day it be possible to shoot 1080p without moire and aliasing? Or is that impossible due to physical limitations? I've watched the videos about how to lessen or avoid moire, but I'd love to know from a technical standpoint that someone resolved the issue.
I don't think it will be possible to avoid it in 1080p because it's the hardware that's causing the issue. This is where you have to choose what resolution can serve you better. Although the aspect ratios of Anamorphic modes might not suit your style...5k and 5kfrtp have very little crop so are a good alternative to 1080p.
As usual a great tutorial! Because cropping with film or video cameras is almost never done in camera--it's done in post--I've always used 16/9 when using "1080" mode. But now we've got a release where cropping is a big deal. What I would like to know is what is GOAL of Crop Mood? What changes are made to the image (pros/cons) in each of the 3-modes. And, is one doesn't choose a setting, what binning mode is used?
@@Altcine I'm still would love a simple reason why anyone would shoot in "5k" when it and "1080" both offer minimal crop (full-sensor readout) and both provide almost the same true maximum image resolution. In fact "5" looks softer!
The cropping is no different than before in the old builds. It still crops in but on a lot of modes you couldn't get a proper live feed on your viewer....you'd get like every 4th frame which was like viewing stop motion. To me that only made it useful for shooting random stuff and not anything meaningful. Yes, 1080 & 5k have little or no crop but because the difference in the way they're recorded 5k gives a little to aliasing. So yes it's softer but you do get a "cleaner" image. Some people swear it's sharper but that isn't the case in any tests I've done but it's nice not having that 3x3 binning and getting very little artefacts.
You don't need the touchscreen, I never used touchscreen even before I turned my camera's into M-Lite's. You can do all the necessary controls with the camera buttons.
It's cool 👍🏾👍🏾 thankfully people came through. I think it's over now but there's an interesting conversation over on the Facebook group about a more simplified version of mL for new user's or veterans who just want an easy to manage stripped down UI. Hopefully The Devs will consider it.
@@Altcine it's interesting that you say that, because I've often wondered about these arcane 'turn on small hacks' style options and I just think, why is this even a thing? How many people need to be able to access this option? Or 2/3rds of any of the options in the menu at all - I'll check it out!
Hey man, I just got an EOS M for 50 bucks today and installed ML crop mood on it. I already have experience with ML on the 5D II and 7D. But on the EOS M I didn't manage to get the video playback (review footage on camera after shooting), I just get a black screen with the file count going. Hi, if you go to Bilals video and download from that link and follow his tutorial first...you shouldn't have any problems. The reason I haven't linked the crop mood build here is because it's important to watch Bilals video.
4/19 the latest build is 18/04/23 for Eos-M. There's 2 ways to install updates. Overwrite the files on SD card with new ones or do a clean install. For Crop Mood I'd suggest the latter.
That's probably down to the way you set it up. I strongly suggest you join the Facebook group and we will help you there. It's quite easy to set up but good to know the process yourself.
Hey can you help me out everytime I try to install it my camera says memory card containing firmware is required to update I’ve tried multiple different links and formatted my card in between every time I’ve tried to install it any help would be appreciated this is getting annoying
You download Crop Mood and extract the files. The extracted files need to be placed on the root of the memory card. Don't put them in any folders or just copy the zip.....they must be on the root.
Awesome 😁🙌🏾🙌🏾 happy shooting. And remember, the Facebook group is a very handy place to be. Lots of info by searching or fast replies if the problem can't be found.
Yes the new Sandisk "200mb/s" is slower in benchmark. I always check all surroundings and set resolutions max about 59-60 mb/s ;] But sometimes i see 70 mb/s in rec ?
I think if you push it to max Res on 5k & 1080p you can see the rate rising. Hopefully as this progresses we will see the high rates we saw before. Personally I would love for Bilal to implement what ever way the data was being written before. That would make this super...SUPER stable.
@@Altcine Recently, I reversed the working mode, I record these +- 520s with +80mb/s with maximum resolution, because a better live preview and no errors despite the interruption :) (of course, when it's a short shot). But I forget that WB is not in AUTO mode.

Good to hear man and yeah...looking forward to the advancements.
Nice video! how did you change the focus while recording? I can do it with the half shutter before starting, but not after it records (I am shooting 1 x 3 4,2k setting 12 bit raw)
Cole's Explanation ♥️♥️♥️
My bro 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thanks to magic Lanterns Devs, Zeek and you IMCE Im planning to buy my first Camera that gonna be the EOS M next month ! if someone can help with couples questions tho :
1. Can I output real time Raw video into HDMI into my computer ?
2. Can I still make photos with Crop Mood ? (I gonna be focused on videos but I like photography)
Also if ML devs or you for the M Lite need a sound engineer I can help !
You could make live Q&A and just live streaming sometimes :) like when rigging or cleaning video hardware or anything :)
Thanks man 🙌🏾
Hdmi output is very low quality.
Yes you can take photos.
Sound is my weak point and always looking for sound guys. Can we chat on IG?
It is a fantastic build, very well done
Agreed. Great work
I know it's called crop mood, but is it possible to get full sensor read? Barely used crops on previous builds, except macro shots
Tbh bro, I can't fully comment on that right now as I really don't know. I think you can still get full sensor in 1080 but I'll have to ask Bilal.
Thank You man! I sold all my Canon gear, but eos M... Just left it as a little gem, it is no longer associates with canon for me, but instead with lantern community and developers. I wish all tech be open source code with free install of operating systems both on body and lenses with apps and add one, like on PC or smartphone. This old enclosed stuff is just bad

Vintage is the way to go, they just have an unbeatable look.
It's good you're willing to learn on the m. Stick with it because every camera will be child's play after. Not just shooting but you'll learn so much about raw, codecs & containers, grading, bit depth.... everything.

Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated 🙌🏾
Do you know if it works with the m50?
Thanks and keep up the great work!!
Thank you.
Unfortunately it doesn't work with M50. There was some progress a couple years ago but it died
Hey,
Is your card legit, is it really old?
The new SanDisk extremes will work providing you get a real one.
Even fakes on Amazon 😔
Thanks very much for this video! I have had my EOS-M since it was initially released. I remember it getting quite a bad rep due to its "slow" autofocus and also it being an early model mirrorless camera, but look at it now! I apologize for the newbie question but how are you correcting exposure on the fly while recording? I have looked at customize buttons but that did not help. I am in manual mode for movie recording using the 18-55mm kit lens.
Yes it's insane what it can do now but I'm more impressed that you've had it since release 😯
I'm using a manual lens here.
@@Altcine Thanks very much I appreciate your help, I will take a look. I'll stick with the ND filters and try that out instead.
So is 95 mb/s the fastest card option overall? Does it improves with 100-300 mb/s card or not?
No it doesn't improve but people have reported some fast speeds with some v60 and V90 cards.
How do you get this canon rehouse kit now?
Not available at the moment but filmatura are doing another sales run this year.
I'm sure I just missed it, but I can't seem to find the source of the problem where my EOS M only shoots a couple of seconds, then stops. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Only some modes work well with 14bit so you may have drop to 10bit.
Is your SD card good enough.
Kill global draw
THANK YOU FOR THE HELP! I learned so much from your channel! Love from LA!

@@Altcine Thank you. I left FB years ago but I will join back just for this :-)
I'm not seeing the 1080p option in Crop Mood 3x3. Only HFR presets (like 976p in 16:9). How do I see 1080p ?
Which build are you on? Try the new danne build as it's easier to navigate

I cant understand 1 thing: you choose some of Crop Moode presets with certain resolutions and aspect ratios, but in RAW section there is different resolution and stuff.. should i ignore RAW tab settings when usin Crop Mood or ...? this ML is so weird sometimes:) please help
The raw tab settings are not to be used in crop mood. Make all changes to resolution, aspect ratio and frame rates in crop mood section only 👍🏾👍🏾

heya mate! firstly a huge thank you for these videos, and to helping people like myself trouble-shooting - super appreciated 🙏
I've just got an eos m with the August edition of Cropmood, but it won't record in 5K. It'll record about 1 second before cutting out, but it can record in 1080.
Do you have any idea where I should be looking for this fix?
My SD is Sandisk 64gb extreme pro 200mb/s
Cheers again!
Hi, thank you mate.
In 5k you may have to drop the bitrate to 10bit. Also, shooting in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio will also increase record time.
This is all done in the Crop Mood settings...NOT in the raw tab settings.
@@Altcine Thanks so much mate, I got the fix with a combination of this and upgrading my SD to 128gb Extreme Pro Sandisk. 🙏
Update for anyone who may be having the same problem (it happened again)
Going 10 bit, upgrading my sd and downgrading my cropmood (from Aug edition to May) has fully done the job 🙌

Lol imagine if that was possible 😁

can you record 12/14bit video in any crop mode without time limits, or other problems with sd cards etc (except 1080p) ?
Not all in 14bit. Some will only do 12,11 or 10. But seeing as it's raw data it's great.
What SD card are you using for this build?
I have the SanDisk Extreme pro micro 400gb. My write speeds were quite low in this video but much better now.
@@Altcine Thanks for the swift reply - new to the game, and the 2nd Avenue of rabbit holes have opened up regarding memory cards.
hi there man , do you whats happened to Zeek
Will this 10% increase in heat become a problem for those of us that still have unmoddified eosms. And... the newer faster cards are slower? I hope this
Is something that can be fixed.
@@Altcine Hi mate. Sorry to bother you again. Im about to install Crop mood onto my card which had the danne build on it. i did a low level format like you recommended but for some reason when i go to copy over the new build it says "Are you sure you want to copy these files without their properties?". its exfat which worked fine before.. does it need to be ntfs or something? i can handle most stuff after this quite well but the intital installing of custom firmware always freaks me out as im afraid ill brick the camera. :) I got the install files from bitbucket. im guessing its the same as installing dannes version? cheers
Hi mate,
Please do the low level format on the camera. It also gives you an option to remove ml. Make sure the box is ticked.
@@Altcine i backed up the ml stuff before formatting it on the pc. Ive just copied it back minus the videos but ml didnt load up? i went to format it in camera and there was no option to delete ml only to low level format, which i did. ive done that, gone back into my pc to copy over the new crop mood files and its giving me the same error message about copying files without their properties.
Are you using windows or Mac? That sounds like a pc problem.
Try downloading the files again.
Any more info on newer memory cards? Should I get a Sandisk extreme pro 200mb/s card or buy the 170mb/s one?
Both should work fine.

@@Altcine mie is choppy.. why was that?
You may have downloaded the wrong ml, maybe the wrong settings...tbh I'm not entirely sure.
I installed Magic Lantern on my EOS-M and never really got into it. It was just too cumbersome to use for video.
But maybe this is what I needed.
I hear that, the first time was a bit of a headache but it's so much better now.
I had no idea about the donations and absolutely would have - is that a done deal or is there some mechanism we can go through still (like a Patreon)?
I tried fiddling with the modules but I couldn't get it to work. I think there's not enough info out there about playback with ML, I couldn't find this info anywhere. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for everything you do

Hi mate, yes it's in the description.
Hi, I’m entering for the first time in this amazing world of video making, and I’m having trouble installing these versions of magic lantern ( I have an eos M).
At first I had installed the original version of the program, but I didn’t understand why many of the options I see in the various videos on UA-cam were missing.
Now I’ve taken off that version and I’m trying to put on Bilal’s, but I can’t.
I have no idea how.
Your videos are very useful, I hope you can help me...
A greeting from Italy
Hi, if you go to Bilals video and download from that link and follow his tutorial first...you shouldn't have any problems.
The reason I haven't linked the crop mood build here is because it's important to watch Bilals video.
@@Altcine nevertheless, he doesn't explain how to install the 4/19 patch to the 4/18 release so there is confusion in his video.
4/19 the latest build is 18/04/23 for Eos-M.
There's 2 ways to install updates. Overwrite the files on SD card with new ones or do a clean install. For Crop Mood I'd suggest the latter.
Respect 🙏🔥🔥
🙌🏾🙌🏾
Wonder if the AI can help perfect things even more?
It's possible. I know people are using chatGPT to get parameters for cleaner footage in Resolve
Make a crowdfunding campaign and build a mirrorless video camera from scratch, with Magic Lantern software.
can you send me a working file, because the ones i download all seem to not record

Lol damn right! Giving is fundamental to human progress.
Is this software crop mood free or a paid software
It's free now. A lot of us donated to allow Bilal to spend time on it.
