I'm a photography newbie. I bought this camera and a few accessories for less than $300. The extra battery handle is a necessity. Mine works with rechargeable batteries. I can see its limits, but I'm nowhere near approaching that yet. Amazing camera, for sure! Thanks for the video confirming my awesome acquisition!
Great video - I do agree, I much prefer the form factor of my 700D especially with the battery grip. The only thing I need to get used to is going back to not speedboosting lenses. Loving the teaser for the documentary too, can't wait for it to drop. Needs a premiere night
Yeah Paul, I know we're in the same camp on the handling side. Speedboosters are sooo useful but thankfully I gave them up a long time ago when learning about light and incorporating it more so I don't really miss it. Yeah I'll definitely do a premiere for the film 🙌🏾 good idea.

I had my eyes on the EOS M but someone in the Facebook groups said don't buy the EOS M and go buy a 650 or 700D instead. I pulled the trigger 2 days ago and purchased a 700D for less than 200 bucks including shipping. It comes with two batteries and the original 18-55mm lens too. Now I see that I made the right decision. That is an insane bargain lol. Thanks a lot for the video. I can't wait to take this baby on a test run as soon as it arrives.
Awesome. Yes I think the person gave you good advice. The body alone makes it a far more versatile tool than the little Eos-M. It's just perfect for filmmaking.
This footage looks like a feature film! I'm looking to add another camera or two for my multi-cam studio shoots, I'm gonna look at these camera on marketplace, I've even thought about a 50D, so we'll see. You're video tests are always inspiring, thanks for what you do!
Or get both. EOS M pocketable with the 22/2 or kit zoom lens and the 650/700D for longer shoots. I think I prefer the convenience of mirrorless for my casual shooting although I could get my M42 lenses adapted to EF. Looking forward to your ML docu ❤ peace!
I just got a 700d for my fiance and I might just get one for myself. It's good to hear that ML performs as well as the EOS M or even better because of heat management. I'm in a hot environment so that would be great! Also, the 650/700d are still great photo cameras. It's great if you're like me and are interested in doing more photography and travel video than making short films or doing client work.
If you want a stupid cheap option...check out the 50D! Shoots 14-bit RAW video continuous without needing ANY experimental firmware...just the stable ML build. Super35 14-bit RAW video for as little as $95! Caveat is huge: The camera originally did not shoot video with it's stock firmware, so there is zero onboard audio.

re lenses - I use a lot of vintage M42 mount Super Takumars, and they'll work on tons of different cameras, so I wouldn't be discouraged about having to resell lenses. Great video!

Thank you. Yes this camera performs extremely well. Still has aliasing in 1080 but that's common across all the ml cams. Very nice to get a stable shot on 5k modes too, to avoid rolling shutter. I can't recommend it enough.
Yeah but that's why it's important to test often. If I need to shoot 1080 again in a similar setting then I know it's only his glasses that could potentially give it away that this was shot on ml. A lot of people leave those shots out but I think it's important to leave them in otherwise we'll never get past the limitations.

There's plenty of people using it in hot climates so I think you should be ok. Recording long form content might be an issue but I'm sure you could still get some decent work done.
I would say that the 650D/700D has better heat management but we're still maxing out the hardware but you will have a better experience than the normal body m

So I'm interested in using it to do cinema level videography for UA-cam, Commercial work for television and Instagram as well as photo shoots for artist development in terms of music reel. Artist Branding and development. Do you recommend the 650d for that?
I love vintage things as well. I collect and watch laserdisk movies and love using my og BMPCC and 2.5K BMCC. BTW that music on House of Black has a cool Grandmaster Flash vibe to it 😊
Yes Paul 🙌🏾 I remember watching movies on laser disc at my friend's house. The first time I saw it was thinking this quality looks so good and it very futuristic. And yes, the OG Blackmagic's are definitely the best option if you want your footage to look alive with that beautiful texture. I love modern sensors but these old ones can't be beaten.
Right now I’m close to deciding on getting the M-lite rehousing as long as it’s still in stock. If I rehouse the EOS-M into the M-lite would you still recommend the 650? Or at that point are they not worth comparing?
They're too very different cams imo and definitely depends on what you plan to shoot. The 650 does have a lot of the features I was trying to solve by building the M-Lite but the M-Lite has to be seen as a more professional tool. No magic lantern camera will beat the M-Lite for heat management, rigging and handling but the 650d is a far more useful than the small Eos m.
I got the EOS M because of its small size. Given the size of the 700D I could as well go for a 5d mk3 which I can get fairly cheap. Has the 700D in ML an advantage over the 5dmk3 in terms of clip length overheating etc? The development of ML goes so fast that videos on YT get outdated very quickly! Many thanks. Yeah you definitely could. The 5d prices have become quite reasonable now which is really good. The 700 has crop mood which is great but the 5d's have the most insane quality
is there any way which can be zoomed in then taking a picture ?, i've had this question for a while and all sites seem not to have an answer, whether in picture mode or recording , can you zoom in and take the picture while zoomed in/ recording ??
Tbh they're all quite good now. On some of the higher res modes you might have to drop bitrate or shoot at 2.35:1 1080p is always going to be the most stable but you might see aliasing & moire
Hey, thanks for the video. I have a bit of an issue shooting with the EOS M in broad daylight. Either I overexpose shots and then the whites start to look pink (or purple?), or else if I expose for the highlights, then the entire shot starts to look kind of... bleak? I mean the colors stop looking "alive" and sure I can bring some of it back in post, but it's fiddly and unreliable. Help!
You can fix the pink highlights in mlvapp app. It has a section made just for that. Explore every control in mlv app and you'll be very surprised how powerful it is

I want to get into what Magic Lantern means and I have a question: In my country, the prices for a 700D and a 5D2 are roughly similar (150 USD) and a 5D3 is a little more expensive (400 USD) and I honestly don't know which choice to make! Do you think the 5D2 is worth more than the 700D? And what do you think of the differences between 5D2 and 5D3? Do you think it's worth investing a little more and buying a 5D3? Thanks in advance for the answer and for everything you do on UA-cam! Edit: And, for me, it's more important to be able to use an external monitor without problems, because with the fixed screen on a 5D you can't do too much!
Hey, thank you bro. Well this is a really hard decision considering the price similarity. The 5d2 & 3 will have much better image and work well. Crop mood is the best experience and for most people it makes sense because the 700D is a couple hundred cheaper in most countries. I would probably go with the 5d2 if it's the same price and hope that crop mood comes at some point.
So, what is really required to get this working on the 650D. Scouted the forum, UA-cam etc and no one seems to even talk about it. Am at sea here and might give up, it's not my camera (even though I have permission to install crop mood). Some talking of firmware versions and when I tried, am being asked about firmware 1.0.4 (which is not available on canons site) etc. I'd rather be safe than mess up since the camera is not mine (I take risk only with my gears no matter what). 😮Any info from anyone here?
The process of install is the same as the Eos-M. On Bilal's walkthrough video he actually shows the whole install on 700D which is same as 650D. Haha, would be very a bore draw. It boils down to preference and cost (esp now that the M is expensive). Major advantages for canon 650/750D are flip screen and battery life Major advantages for EOS M are adaptability of the mount and speedbooster
Yeah it will be extremely close and I'll only do a rec709 conversion on the footage. Doing the test against bmpcc I just noticed how much cleaner the noise was compared to Eos-M that I've shot in similar conditions. I may be just dreaming though and they're the same.

Just a stupid question. Is the 700D the same model as the Rebel t5i. I read they're identical, but do they work the same for Crop Mood? I love my EOS M and would still use it, but I would love to try another body where I don't need an EF adapter. I invested in a couple of EF/EFs lenses rather than EFM

fantastic video. i've been wondering about heat displacement lately. i live in a hot climate so i usually do my shooting early in the day before the temperature rises. the other day i decided to run some tests in the afternoon and my record times were rubbish. the shots were outside (35-37c) so obviously no way to control the environment. the M wasn't even giving half the amount of record time i can get in the mornings when its 21/22c before it would stop recording on it own. I'm wondering if you have pushed the m-lite with continuous shooting to see if it overheats with the fan? or if you have just noticed a difference in performance/ record times using 12 or 14 bit? for reference i usually shoot danne's build 5kfrtp 10 bit. the tests i referred to earlier was trying out crop moods in various settings and then back to 5k frtp. the M choked on all attempts in those temperatures no matter what settings i was using. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on either an m-lite or a 650d to see if i can get better performance from a cooler sensor. since you have both what do you think would be the better option? thanks for any input. i love your vibe and love your content, you do great work.
Firstly, thank you so much for kind comment 🙌🏾 I've stressed the M-Lite in Barbados & Spain. Barbados was about 35° when I went but the M-Lite performed like a boss with the fan. The key is to start the fan immediately upon turning on the camera in hot conditions and it'll always stay cool. The 650d is great too but I've never tested it in a hot country. In Bilal's walkthrough video I noticed his temps were quite high and I believe he's from Lebanon. I've never seen my temps that high but UK is obviously much cooler.

I'm about to buy my first camera. I'm not newbe in video, i'm aware of the standart now which is 10 bit internal but i can't afford them for the moment. I can afford lumix g7 or canon 700D here in my country. Would you syggest me canon with magic lantern for work, or you keep your word to keep magic lantern for B camera and buy something stable first.
Whilst you can get away with using ml for paid work with crop mood, I would be silly if I told you to have it as your only cam. Yes the colour depth, highlight recovery etc is amazing but if someone was paying me to do a job I'd rather have a normal camera first. The ml cameras are very cheap so if you're really stuck for cash they can get you started but really for your main cam you need something "normal"
With magic Lantern there's 3 different types Nightly Builds = Bad Dannes Builds = Good Crop Mood = Best You might get by with one of the nightly builds on 70d but if you want the best experience it's going to be crop mood on eos-m, 100d, 650d & 700d
Really great footage. I have, for my part, started the journey with 100d, but unfortunately the pixel maps for all crop mood resolution are not yet available, so you have to deal with the pink dots everywhere, i also got some random striped frame, which can randomly appear if you are under exposed. Have you got any of this issues?

I don't have any of those issues on my cam but never underexpose the image otherwise it'll look awful. I do remember someone talking about that stripe, even when exposed correctly and I'm pretty sure they found a fix on the m Facebook group.

This was all shot in 1080p 14 bit raw. 25fps and the 1080 hfr for slow-mo. I exported in CDNG uncompressed for fast renders in mlv app. In Davinci Resolve I use sharpening in the raw tab to get it looking a bit more crispy. No other changes made, I hope that helps.

I would like to know which Crop build have used for 650d, because I tried few crop build however am limited to 10 sec recording time. Appreciate your help brother.
I've tried all of them and they all work well. You might have to drop bitrate to 12 or 10bits but remember it's raw so there's more than enough data for colour grading. In 1080p you can still use 14bit.
@@Altcine My bad, I wasn’t investing my time properly. I’ve installed again the lasted build did configure to have a correct settings this time and manage to get it work like charm now. Crop mode really a sweet spot for all ML enthusiasts.
Being the tech guy among my media friends, looking to run this on one of my friend's 650D. I once introduced him to it but that was way before Crop Mood came into the scene. He uses my Sony for his shoot but want to give him reasons to use his (he actually has two 650D). Any thing I need to know would be helpful (Asked him to bring it over this weekend).
Hi mate. It's very straightforward Tbh. The only thing is the shutter bug which I mentioned. If you try to change shutter in ml menu and it reverts back to 1/30 or whatever....don't be alarmed. Just make sure it's set right in canon menu and everything should work well.

@@Altcine i bought used 700d and after a week, its show an error 70 when i use usb cable to tranfer data... so i never use it again... but recently when i switch from movie mode to picture mode or vice versa, i got error 30... And now i so scared to turn it back to picture mode... and always turn on stright to movie mode

There's plenty of people using it in hot climates so I think you should be ok.
Recording long form content might be an issue but I'm sure you could still get some decent work done.
I would say that the 650D/700D has better heat management but we're still maxing out the hardware but you will have a better experience than the normal body m

So I'm interested in using it to do cinema level videography for UA-cam, Commercial work for television and Instagram as well as photo shoots for artist development in terms of music reel. Artist Branding and development. Do you recommend the 650d for that?
I got a canon 70d , with all advantages of 650d, but no cropmood, high fps, dual iso, So envy!!!
Hopefully we will see crop mood developed for a lot more camera's in the future.

I love vintage things as well. I collect and watch laserdisk movies and love using my og BMPCC and 2.5K BMCC. BTW that music on House of Black has a cool Grandmaster Flash vibe to it 😊
Yes Paul 🙌🏾 I remember watching movies on laser disc at my friend's house. The first time I saw it was thinking this quality looks so good and it very futuristic.
And yes, the OG Blackmagic's are definitely the best option if you want your footage to look alive with that beautiful texture. I love modern sensors but these old ones can't be beaten.

Right now I’m close to deciding on getting the M-lite rehousing as long as it’s still in stock. If I rehouse the EOS-M into the M-lite would you still recommend the 650? Or at that point are they not worth comparing?
They're too very different cams imo and definitely depends on what you plan to shoot. The 650 does have a lot of the features I was trying to solve by building the M-Lite but the M-Lite has to be seen as a more professional tool.
No magic lantern camera will beat the M-Lite for heat management, rigging and handling but the 650d is a far more useful than the small Eos m.
Where would you buy a 650-700D at this moment ?
I got mine from Facebook marketplace. Lots of scammers there but this woman had been a member since 2009 and had a solid profile.

I got the EOS M because of its small size. Given the size of the 700D I could as well go for a 5d mk3 which I can get fairly cheap. Has the 700D in ML an advantage over the 5dmk3 in terms of clip length overheating etc? The development of ML goes so fast that videos on YT get outdated very quickly! Many thanks. Yeah you definitely could. The 5d prices have become quite reasonable now which is really good. The 700 has crop mood which is great but the 5d's have the most insane quality

Tbh they're all quite good now. On some of the higher res modes you might have to drop bitrate or shoot at 2.35:1
1080p is always going to be the most stable but you might see aliasing & moire

Hey, thanks for the video. I have a bit of an issue shooting with the EOS M in broad daylight. Either I overexpose shots and then the whites start to look pink (or purple?), or else if I expose for the highlights, then the entire shot starts to look kind of... bleak? I mean the colors stop looking "alive" and sure I can bring some of it back in post, but it's fiddly and unreliable. Help!
You can fix the pink highlights in mlvapp app. It has a section made just for that. Explore every control in mlv app and you'll be very surprised how powerful it is

In my country, the prices for a 700D and a 5D2 are roughly similar (150 USD) and a 5D3 is a little more expensive (400 USD) and I honestly don't know which choice to make!
Do you think the 5D2 is worth more than the 700D? And what do you think of the differences between 5D2 and 5D3? Do you think it's worth investing a little more and buying a 5D3? Thanks in advance for the answer and for everything you do on UA-cam!
Edit: And, for me, it's more important to be able to use an external monitor without problems, because with the fixed screen on a 5D you can't do too much!

Well this is a really hard decision considering the price similarity.
The 5d2 & 3 will have much better image and work well.
Crop mood is the best experience and for most people it makes sense because the 700D is a couple hundred cheaper in most countries.
I would probably go with the 5d2 if it's the same price and hope that crop mood comes at some point.
So, what is really required to get this working on the 650D.
Scouted the forum, UA-cam etc and no one seems to even talk about it. Am at sea here and might give up, it's not my camera (even though I have permission to install crop mood).
Some talking of firmware versions and when I tried, am being asked about firmware 1.0.4 (which is not available on canons site) etc.
I'd rather be safe than mess up since the camera is not mine (I take risk only with my gears no matter what).

The process of install is the same as the Eos-M. On Bilal's walkthrough video he actually shows the whole install on 700D which is same as 650D.

Major advantages for canon 650/750D are flip screen and battery life
Major advantages for EOS M are adaptability of the mount and speedbooster
Yeah it will be extremely close and I'll only do a rec709 conversion on the footage.
Doing the test against bmpcc I just noticed how much cleaner the noise was compared to Eos-M that I've shot in similar conditions.
I may be just dreaming though and they're the same.

I love my EOS M and would still use it, but I would love to try another body where I don't need an EF adapter. I invested in a couple of EF/EFs lenses rather than EFM

fantastic video. i've been wondering about heat displacement lately. i live in a hot climate so i usually do my shooting early in the day before the temperature rises. the other day i decided to run some tests in the afternoon and my record times were rubbish. the shots were outside (35-37c) so obviously no way to control the environment. the M wasn't even giving half the amount of record time i can get in the mornings when its 21/22c before it would stop recording on it own.
I'm wondering if you have pushed the m-lite with continuous shooting to see if it overheats with the fan? or if you have just noticed a difference in performance/ record times using 12 or 14 bit? for reference i usually shoot danne's build 5kfrtp 10 bit. the tests i referred to earlier was trying out crop moods in various settings and then back to 5k frtp. the M choked on all attempts in those temperatures no matter what settings i was using.
I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on either an m-lite or a 650d to see if i can get better performance from a cooler sensor. since you have both what do you think would be the better option?

I've stressed the M-Lite in Barbados & Spain. Barbados was about 35° when I went but the M-Lite performed like a boss with the fan.
The key is to start the fan immediately upon turning on the camera in hot conditions and it'll always stay cool.
The 650d is great too but I've never tested it in a hot country. In Bilal's walkthrough video I noticed his temps were quite high and I believe he's from Lebanon. I've never seen my temps that high but UK is obviously much cooler.

i figured I better grab one before they are no longer available. super excited to get it. my ultimate goal is to get longer continuios recording in 5kfrtp 12 bit, or better yet, dare I dream 14 bit.

I'm about to buy my first camera. I'm not newbe in video, i'm aware of the standart now which is 10 bit internal but i can't afford them for the moment. I can afford lumix g7 or canon 700D here in my country. Would you syggest me canon with magic lantern for work, or you keep your word to keep magic lantern for B camera and buy something stable first.
Whilst you can get away with using ml for paid work with crop mood, I would be silly if I told you to have it as your only cam.
Yes the colour depth, highlight recovery etc is amazing but if someone was paying me to do a job I'd rather have a normal camera first.
The ml cameras are very cheap so if you're really stuck for cash they can get you started but really for your main cam you need something "normal"

With magic Lantern there's 3 different types
Nightly Builds = Bad
Dannes Builds = Good
Crop Mood = Best
You might get by with one of the nightly builds on 70d but if you want the best experience it's going to be crop mood on eos-m, 100d, 650d & 700d
I use ef lenses on the m with the adapter
Imma stick to eos m, bcz we can use speedbooster... and it lightweight so the rig wont be too heavy...

Really great footage. I have, for my part, started the journey with 100d, but unfortunately the pixel maps for all crop mood resolution are not yet available, so you have to deal with the pink dots everywhere, i also got some random striped frame, which can randomly appear if you are under exposed. Have you got any of this issues?

I don't have any of those issues on my cam but never underexpose the image otherwise it'll look awful.
I do remember someone talking about that stripe, even when exposed correctly and I'm pretty sure they found a fix on the m Facebook group.

This was all shot in 1080p 14 bit raw. 25fps and the 1080 hfr for slow-mo.
I exported in CDNG uncompressed for fast renders in mlv app.
In Davinci Resolve I use sharpening in the raw tab to get it looking a bit more crispy.
No other changes made, I hope that helps.

What are the best videography lenses on canon 650d?
For film look I'd go with with canon FD. For clean I'd use sigma 18-35 1.8 & canon 50mm stm.

Actually there’s an adapter with no glass, directly made by canon, though i think other brands got a no glass direct FD to EF adapter!
Yeah I used the one with glass from k&f. On wide open fast FD's it did degrade the image a little but stepped down it looked nice.

I would like to know which Crop build have used for 650d, because I tried few crop build however am limited to 10 sec recording time. Appreciate your help brother.
I've tried all of them and they all work well. You might have to drop bitrate to 12 or 10bits but remember it's raw so there's more than enough data for colour grading.
In 1080p you can still use 14bit.
@@Altcine My bad, I wasn’t investing my time properly. I’ve installed again the lasted build did configure to have a correct settings this time and manage to get it work like charm now. Crop mode really a sweet spot for all ML enthusiasts.

Being the tech guy among my media friends, looking to run this on one of my friend's 650D. I once introduced him to it but that was way before Crop Mood came into the scene. He uses my Sony for his shoot but want to give him reasons to use his (he actually has two 650D). Any thing I need to know would be helpful (Asked him to bring it over this weekend).
Hi mate. It's very straightforward Tbh. The only thing is the shutter bug which I mentioned. If you try to change shutter in ml menu and it reverts back to 1/30 or whatever....don't be alarmed. Just make sure it's set right in canon menu and everything should work well.
