Nissan Stuck in Park Shift Lock Repair

  • Apparently, a common issue with Nissan Sentra, Altimas, and similar of the 2012-2015 vintage. This video shows what it took me to repair this issue on a 2014 Nissan Altima. It is a pretty simple DIY repair that only requires a couple tools to do... phillips head screwdriver, needle nose pliers, 10mm socket. If you have a trim/panel removal set, great, but not necessary if you have a clean flat head screwdriver to remove the trim and interior panels.
Thank you to Yen Estelles for his video that helped boost my confidence on this one...

Thanx for the vid. Just fixed a customers car with this issue. By the way, anyone needs this done, you can remove the two front center control screws with a stubby screwdriver instead of trying to disassemble or brake the moldings.

I appreciate you for the time and putting this video together. I feel more informed and confident of taking this task of fixing the altima. May not have been easy to figure things out for you but I learned a bit. Thanks again!

I am having this same issue. It just started last week. Thank you for this video which explains my problem. Now I have to find a mechanic that can assist me with this adjustment.

couple of pointers for those who are watching this video:
    1) those things you are calling a "relay" are actually just micro switches. The one you pointed out on the top is not the issue with these designs
    2) The thing that releases the interlock is called a solenoid. It only functions when you have your foot on the brake and the micro switch at the BOTTOM of the shifter tower is depressed. This is the faulty switch, not the one on top.
    3) The switch at the bottom is probably working just fine, what happens is that the metal tang thats attached to the switch bends from use over time, and no longer depresses the switch. To remedy this, all you have to do is remove the switch at the bottom and bend the metal tab up so that when the shifter is in park, it actually depresses the switch properly. You can use a meter to verify that its working, but you can also hear the click audibly when its working correctly. Once you have it all back together you can see how the shifter functions once the car is powered on and the brake is pressed. Hope that helps.
**EDIT TO ANYONE INTERESTED: The switch was still bad in my case. It became evident after adjusting the Tang twice. All I was doing was delaying the inevitable. The main issue with the micro switch is that the current in the circuit is too close to the amperage rating of the switch. The plating will eventually fail in the area that actually makes contact upon operation. There is no fixing this. Once the plating starts to wear - it will fail permanently in a matter of time. The permanent fix is to replace the switch with one that has a higher amperage rating. The switch will be exactly the same size - but it will have a thicker plating/contacts to handle the higher amperage. You can go on mouser or digikey and find replacement micro switches. Just find one with the same size and Voltage rating with a higher amperage rating.

"Tang" was the word I was searching for and failing to come up with. Thanks for the fine tuning of the explanation for anyone watching, proving again the self-correcting wiki-like nature of video postings like mine.

Ok so there isn't an actual Nissan oem part number for that switch? I see them on Amazon all day for my 2014 but i tried to search for park reverse control switch, park lock switch and just about anything even close for this year and i could only find the entire shift assembly for sale... I'm not paying $699 for it when i just need the metal arm click part lol. Do you happen to have a part number for that repair part?

I can't believe I came across your video I looked everywhere for this problem I eventually went to reckers and dismantle one mine was the little accurator I see you pointed out at the bottom rapped in blue tape with the little piston when you put your foot on the brake current magnetic pulls piston and release plastic tang took me 2hrs cost $5 fixed 05 X-Trail Nissan.

I took the simpler route. I pulled out the shift lock cover and put thin strips of rigid plastic in the small shit lock cover and pushed the cover back down. It took a couple tries to get the length correct but it saves me from taking the console apart. Granted I no longer have a shift interlock mechanism that prevents me from shifting without hitting the brake but it’s a much simpler “fix.” Since it’s just me and my wife that drives the car I’m not worried about it, plus you still have to push the button on the shifter to pull it out of park

gr8 vid. Ihave a 2001 maxima, which is stuck in park. initially it was the break light switch, as the break lights didnot work. So replaced that switch , Then it all worked then it stopped working again, but this time break lights still work. I suspect it could be this or a fuse/relay. the shifter lock kind of looks similar to this setup but might be slightly different.

I took the pigtail off the back of the switch that acts up and put a wire between the wires on the pigtail connecting them all the time in case the switch fails. The wires that activate the switch are always connected now so it will always work.
