In the song, his love has died. He wants to turn his red heart black (die). He wants to join her. He's not going to look at other girls. He doesn't care about sex. He doesn't want joy. He's in a dark place. His world is painted black without her. He doesn't want color. He wants to be with her. He doesn't want color, beauty, other girls. He wants to die. He wants the whole world to mourn with him---to be painted black...or that is how I always understood it.

This is truly a genius song. To me, it's a song about the horrible depression one would get after experiencing a really traumatic experience, like witnessing the death of a loved one, or in this case, the death of their soulmate. One would feel extremely depressed and would have feelings of wanting to die, to join them. Their whole world was once full of color and life, but with this traumatic event, their world has turned into a deep dark void. To any of you out there who have lost friends, family members, people that you love and care about, etc., you have my deepest condolences and my sympathies. Remember that you have people around you that will help you out. You are not alone.

This song is also associated with the Vietnam war from back in the day, when our vets came home and what was going on in their minds and how the war messed them up. It's amazing how time and political correctness changes lyrics and their meanings. If you watch alot of movies/documentaries on Nam this song is usually played in them. This song came out just before the draft was getting started and guys were forced to go fight, many against their will. Then Vietnam Vets were treated like crap when they came home from the war and they've had to fight for all their benefits that they were promised. They had to fight more than one war in regards to Vietnam. This song for many Vietnam Vets is a theme song for them.

The Hmms sound like they are repeating the verses: I see a red door and I want it painted black, no colors anymore I want them to turn black... You hear the words because they match the way the verses were sung, but since there are many verses the brain does not know which ones to assign making the words you are 'hearing' unclear.
Another way to look at it, sometimes the guitarist will answer or mimic the singer by following the structure of the lines either in the solo or not; in this case instead of adding lyrics, since they pretty much said it all already, they just hmm'd the line structure. It also works to show the person is grief stricken and lamenting.

Either his wife or girlfriend etc has just died, he is in a car looking through the window by the graveyard but can't make himself go with the others to the grave. Friends try to console him but can't relate to his pain. His heart shuts down going black and he wants the window and world to all go black too. He feels guilty when girls walk by because they are beautiful and remind him of the woman who died and he might be attracted to them

The Rolling Stones is one of the longest playing bands. They started in the 1960's and still rock to this day. Some think that the guitarist Keith Richards will actually outlive any other human on earth. It is amazing that he is alive today because of his earlier years lifestyle. I have also heard people make the comment that Keith Richards has 9 lives like a cat.

Fun fact: the Rolling Stones were the band the originally recorded Bittersweet Symphony, but the song didn't gain much notoriety like many of their other songs, that is, until the Verve covered it in the 90s, which caused the Rolling Stones to sue them for not asking permission to cover and release the song. The Verve then made a deal with Reebok to let them use the song in ads for their products. I would also state that you should take this info with a grain of salt since it's something I vaguely remember learning in middle school, that said I'd recommend giving both the Rolling Stones version and the Verve's version of Bittersweet Symphony a look

This is a song of inner being the fight between good and evil, somewhere in the middle . . . the balance. It jumps from wanting this world to end, to the bitter sweet fight that will never allow it. This where all the contrast you hear in between the vibrations of hope. He has hope that painting will bring new life even where it once was and has now left. While your faithful to your partner who you may feel is your soul mate, and if you've lost them you literally will have to fight those urges and looking away is simply the only way. But without understanding deeper consciousness you're giving up on your soul mate if we all are truly "one" you'll hear this preached through I AM'ness by turning your head. The darkness gives you the answers that we take as our own sometimes. This is a song of emotion and confusion that one has while on their purpose or path. It's confusing at times but we truly cant know for sure who's feeding our emotions in times where we are lost in our heads. Our true alignment shows when we're doing things we love and whilst bringing joy, profoundness, hope and clairity within the struggle we call life.

brian jones died at 27 (like hendrix, janis joplin, jim morrison , kurt cobain) thats him playing the SITAR on this one.(guitar -type instrument from india). brian was the first big name rock star to pass at 27. within 2 years (1969-71) there would be 4 important members in the 27 club. the sitar has been used by metallica " wherever i may roam", and by yes "it can happen" and various other groups.

I love your reaction. I never thought anout the song until now, I just loved the passion of the song. I think you're right, it's how you feel when life is going on around you and you're depressed and you just want things to be sad, but theyre not and everything is all mixed up. I think your words in the humming is their brilliant way of using what your brain already does. It blurs those two things....they know you know the words now so your brain already sort of years them when it hears those notes, but it doesn't actually hear the whole words because theyre not saying them. It expects to hear them, so it hears a faded version of them. #itsbrilliant I missed you!!

This is written from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed; he wants everything to turn black to match his mood. There was no specific inspiration for the lyrics. When asked at the time why he wrote a song about death, Mick Jagger replied: "I don't know. It's been done before. It's not an original thought by any means. It all depends on how you do it."
The song seems to be about a lover who died:
"I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" - The hearse and limos.
"With flowers and my love both never to come back" - The flowers from the funeral and her in the hearse. He talks about his heart being black because of his loss.
"I could not foresee this thing happening to you" - It was an unexpected and sudden death.
"If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" - This refers to her in Heaven.

Welcome back from your trip. It's good to see you back at the reactions again. I hope you got the black & white Rock n Roll stickers I sent you. Enjoy them. The new AC/DC album is scheduled to arrive at your PO box around the 13th of next month.
You picked a really cool Stones tune to do. I've always dug this one because it seems to fit the era it's from so we'll. They have so many great jams to get in to. Your gonna have a blast exploring this group.
Happy Birthday man and it's great to have you back at it again.

Just dive into The Rolling Stones catalogue. There will never be another band like them. Basically living legends. I enjoy so many kinds of music but they’ll always be my favorite. And they’ve been one of the only live acts to keep on for more than five decades. It’s not by accident. Mick Jagger is a brilliant business man, lyricist and while he doesn’t have a “pretty” voice, an amazing vocalist. Keith Richards on guitar balances the math with feel. I know theyre not everyone’s jam. But if you dig in, there is a lot to love. Sorry for the long rant. 😉 peace and love to you and all!
