    I love this song and it's very deep. Even the video has meaning. His walk is a representation of the path of life, the people he encounters are the people and events that we encounter through our lives. The guy with the fridge on a dolly is like a big life altering event that was narrowly avoided. The people he bumped into are the little speed bumps that help shape our lives. The girl in the car is a bad relationship, the car is the large event that he was able to cross and move on from but she didn't move on as easily and followed representing how a love can effect your life long term even after it's ended. The lady he knocked down was like an encounter where he hurt someone else's life in some way and he was recognizing that but still life continues without looking back. The girl that checked him out was like a perfect fling that came and went and left only a fond memory. The car that actually made him pause was a major life event that held him in place for a while, maybe good maybe bad but significant enough to make his life take pause but in the end it too did pass and life continued as always. And the end when the other four followed with him is like the people in your life who are there for the long haul whoever they may be they stick with you till the end while still living their own lives respectively.

    This song defined a generation. And its mine. Mine and so SO many others. This song came out around 1997 and listening to it now it just reminds so many of us of a better time, and easier time. This song will forever be a nostalgia trip, back to when the only thing we had to worry about was just being kids. Most of us didn't listen to this until years later, or really appreciate the lyrics until that magic was lost. A song written for an entire generation just a little too soon.

    You're one of the only reaction channels for music that actually pays attention to the lyrics on a first listen even without a lyric video. Much respect for getting into the lyrical side and I'd actually say you should tackle some bands with great writing and play the lyric video for your first listen. Something like Incubus (The Warmth, Nice to Know You, Idiot Box, Dig) or The Shins (So Says I, Caring is Creepy, New Slang) or Blues Traveler (Hook).
    Love to see you watch lyric videos for some of those songs and see if they resonate for you. Keep up the great work man, love the videos!

    Fun fact: the music sampled is from a Rolling Stones live concert album and they sued him for royalties. Until a year or two ago, they made all the money from this amazing song. It basically forced him into one hit wonder status. Everyone knew this song when it came out. During the peer to peer music downloading days this was one of the most pirated songs, and just about everyone on any network had a copy. What he's saying cuts deep into the social psyche.

    • @choot49
      @choot49 3 роки тому +47

      Not only did Allen Klein take all the Verve's money for a tiny little sample (he's the lawyer who screwed Rolling Stones out of their rights, Beatles out of their rights...) but Klein sold it to Nike immediate. so anyone who didn't Napster the tune saw the Nike commercial.... I'm betting @Mr.Video knows it from the ua-cam.com/video/8FqKRN5FQgw/v-deo.html commercial. Klein may have screwed a bunch of artists but he dead now proving A) you can't take it with you and B) rock n roll will never die

    • @galetinm
      @galetinm 3 роки тому +28

      Your comment makes no sense.
      Definitely not a live concert album. The opening strings are sampled from the 1965 Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of the Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time", arranged and written by David Whitaker.
      Stones didn't play on that version, it was a version played by an orchestra. And definitely not live.
      And how does that make you a one hit wonder?

    • @deanthorpe1684
      @deanthorpe1684 3 роки тому +1

      @Gus Lulu yes. That is to say it was very common to not move and to simply as Mel said, stay in your lane. If you walk straight and can be seen from a distance you shouldn't have to, if someone zigs or zags in front of you it wasn't your place to dodge them. On a male on male situation it could and likely would be a sign of submissivness to move.
      If you were alone and heading towards a group then moving would deffo be a sign of weakness and they would notice. It only really applied for those of that same mindset of course, you wouldn't walk into an old lady who was looking the other way blocking your path, that's what course correction is for.
      It wasn't really the case any longer once we got into this century.

      @@martinlewis6650 It's a classic case of don't judge a book by it's cover. Here don't judge a song by it's title. For ages I assumed it was about not using recreational drugs (which by the way is still a great message), but when I heard Ashcroft being interviewed and telling that story it became even more incredible. What a talent, to be able to turn a horrible moment in your life intern epic anthem that touches so many people.

    The video for this song is his life. He is walking his path and there are obstacles in the way that he has to push through. Pretty girls, abusive relationships, old people that think they know better, tough guys that think they can scare him etc. He takes them all in his stride, which he never breaks, and he overcomes them and continues on his way.
    This is a great tune and one of The Verve's best known but 'The drugs don't work' is better IMHO. It's about the lead singers struggles with substance abuse and the collapse of his relationships with everyone around him.

    "Lucky Man" is another good song by The Verve. Well, you've now heard Oasis and the Verve, two of the biggest bands from the British "Britpop" indie rock scene of the 1990s. Next you need to hear some by the other two big names of the era - Pulp and Blur. Pulp's "Common People" and Blur's "Parklife" would be good possibilities.

    My wife uncle lived up the road from the lead singer. As he was a long time music lover after hearing this song recording sample encouraged than to get if discovered by record label, as he could see it being a big hit true story.

    Thank you. I had heard this song, and remembered liking it, but I had no idea of the name of the group. It's the first time I'm seeing the video. Great reaction. You have great ears too. I couldn't make out all of the lyrics. I agree with some of the commenters. You have a wonderful capacity to listen and understand the emotion behind the lyrics. That's a gift. You're funny too. Another gift. Peace and blessings.

    We had a second British invasion in the 90s: Oasis, Blur, The Verve, Radiohead, Bush...all great bands. Please do a reaction to all of them! They all have such great songs. Oasis is my favorite band. I recommend the acoustic version of Sad Song and I think you'd enjoy The Importance of Being Idle. Love your videos!

    I always thought this song was for men in their 20s trying to make their way in a difficult world and struggling to come to terms with their own weaknesses, like I was when I first heard it in 1997. It spoke to me directly and made me feel like I was not alone.
    Judging by your reaction, it just spoke to you too.
