  • Daniel Suelo is the 60 year old man who lived without having a cent to his name for 15 years. Living moneyless from 2000 until 2015, his primary home was a cave in the Utah desert. Though he wandered all over the United States walking, hitch-hiking and train-hopping, he never used food banks, food stamps or any other kind of government assistance. His primary food source was from dumpsters and fresh road kill. Occasionally, he would take food that was offered to him. The idea was to use everything already at hand, whether food or technology, to recycle and repurpose, not purchase anything, as all of wild nature does. Daniel is currently a live-in caretaker for his mother. So now he uses money sparingly to take care of her, but his goal is to get back to living moneyless as soon as he's able.

Funny watching this. As the sun goes down here in the western US and my room gets dimmer, see how mentally I also start losing steam in the conversation. But it was fun, and I thank you, John, for inviting me to do this with you.

Haha, yes I noticed that too. It was such an honour Daniel, I learned a lot from you! I've retold your story about the 'boots' that magically appeared during your hike in the mountain as a testament to trusting the universe. I really appreciate you and trust all is going well with you and your family!

Hi Daniel.. I have a goal of owning nothing by 2025 and have started taking steps to make that happen. I also grew up in a Christian home and by my mid-20's I couldn't figure out why I was getting drunk on Saturday night and then leading worship on Sunday morning if the God I was serving was so powerful why was I not changing as I was praying. I left church for the last 15 years and have only recently started to understand the nature of God and what this dimension is all about. I'm 41 now.. I loved hearing your insight here.

Surprised only 20 comments, after this long video. I believe that any step toward less stuff is good and opens doors. Freeing ourselves from stuff can create joy toward a higher faith or enlightenment. I applaud anyone who simply tries. Just try......

Well said, and I think what is happening on Earth right now is showing a lot of people that excess isn't necessary and less truly is more.

I spent the Entirety of 2021 letting go of my belongings from my bedroom and the basement!
I haven't let go of all my belongings but at least now I have the amount and types of belongings I know I like and will use!

Daniel Suelo is a strong and intelligent soul. We all can learn something from his experiences. I do wish he would write a book.
The U.S. is such an over-consumption country; so materialistic. I always dream of the simple life of a quiet village, riding a bike everywhere, growing my own food and living in peace and quiet but don't know where that place exists in the U.S. Maybe a small cottage in the countryside of Ireland or a small village somewhere in Mexico.

If you can get a hold of Miriam Lancewood, that would be an amazing person to have on your podcast! Similar to Suelo, she's been living in the wilderness, together with her husband, as hunters and gatherers! She has two books, "Woman in the Wilderness" and "Wild at Heart" :)

1:05:08, really interesting thought. Reminds of two mayoral candidates for NYC recently guessing $80,000 and and $100,000 when asked what the median home price in Brooklyn is. The median is really $900,000. Not really related to the production of goods for trade, but shows how disconnected from the average person wealthy people can be.

I think buying some land and working part time when your older to pay the property taxes and buy some things is the best way to do it. The best thing about this is that the irs can kiss your ass.

Why didn't you talk to Daniel about where he is living now? And what he
Is doing now? Daniel barely mentioned he took care of his parents. Is that
    What he is doing now?

Yes, I'm still caretaking my 95-y.o. mother, living with her in Colorado. I took care of my dad, too, until he passed away 7 years ago. Didn't think I'd be doing this this long.

The book is, The Man Who Quit Money, by Mark Sundeen about Daniel who refused to write about himself and turned down writing his memoir. So Sundeen got the proceeds because he actually wrote the book. Read the book.

I don't receive a cent from the book or audio books or any UA-cam videos. I made an agreement with the book publisher and author I'd get no money, and it's theirs to do with as they please. If I did, it would render this whole thing meaningless, right?

Make no mistake friends, the LORD provided for this man and for you, even if you don’t know Him or reject Him. Jesus is Truth. He loves you and died for you. Repent of your sins and follow Jesus before your life on earth ends. Remember, your tomorrow is not guaranteed. God bless you.
    John 14:6

The ‘universe’ does not provide. The LORD God almighty, the creator of the universe, provides. Beware of new age ‘Law of attraction’. This deception is from Satan to keep you away from the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. You must believe in Jesus Christ to go to Heaven after you die.
    Matthew 6: 26-34

What separates us from nature/ the animals is we are made in the image of God. Humans are more valuable than animals. Not that we shouldn’t take care of earth or animals. We absolutely should. But we are far more valuable in God’s eyes. I like this gentleman’s testimony, but he is still blinded to the Truth. Man’s sin nature has separated him from God. Jesus Christ paid the price on the cross for that sin. Whosoever should believe in Him will be saved. It’s a free gift. Do not let the enemy deceive you. God bless.
