You're definitely correct. The higher you average, the more it becomes a mental thing. Sometimes it's throwing a bad shot, had a bad day at work, or even just not physically feeling well. The hard part is figuring out how to overcome them. And if you can't at the moment, don't get discouraged.
This definitely something to watch, and re watch. One thing on my league we have a very sore winner. Complains about everything! I'm telling ya, take one shot at a time. when I get up on the approach after a missed shot, and the teammate saying I'm not going quick enough, for me I do the same everytime. It took me 2 years of just breathing. Getting up and having a consistent approach, getting to my happy place before I even think about the shot at hand. From there I prepare myself, does the ball balance fell correct, am I on my mark. Looking down lane and looking at my target. the hardest part is the mental game. I started with a 150 average, doing these simple things, has allowed me to be the top pin total on my team. I'm average about 181 now.
Ive watched everything in bowling since I started 3 years ago. This video has some great mentality highlights that are truly critical in any sport. After all Ive watched on UA-cam Andrew came out good on how to approach your non physical game which is not so eloquently touched on with what Ive seen on this platform. I Hope everyone improves their game, and this is solid mindset. this is a great encouragement to the community, I suggest you like it and let more people find it. not a sponsored writer, just a guy who had a great time on his first fall league night. /endcringe
I do keep a game-by-game record of my performance. What information should be recorded in the notebook? I like what you're doing here Andrew. Keep it up!
Im bad about overthinking and analyzing. That gets me into trouble alot, they say to leave your thinking at the table, great idea. Im famous for guttering after a double.
Thanks, Andrew. I'm relatively new to bowling (five months so far) and my average is about 170. But you're right, the main issue is missing spares that I should have made. I usually look at my games on LaneTalk when I'm done, and figure out what my score could have been if I'd made all the spares I should have made (I don't include splits in this cos I rarely convert them). My average could be about 20-25 pins higher. So my main focus when I practise/play is to relax, be consistent and try to leave no frame open. I've succeeded on a few occasions, and when I have, I've had games above 200 (high score of 234).
Last year I averaged 185 in league. Series ranged anywhere from 440-670. Just added a spare ball to the mix so hopefully I should be more consistent in converting makeable spares. Need for focus and consistency. Just shot a personal best 3 game series in practice this weekend
I have a checklist that I go through and a pretty solid/consistent preshot routine. I normally average over 200, but sometimes, the lanes don't breakdown the same (most times). 6 strikes per game, 7 splits, and 0 missed makeable spares, The only thing that worked for me was switching to urethane. I finished game 3 with a 4 bagger to pull out a 201 game after rolling 2 170's. I noted in my journal which lane was jumping with reactive.
After a 20+ year layoff from bowling, I am bowling league again. It has been a struggle to say the least. Concentrating on spares the last month I have gone from 2+ opens a game to 1 a game. Still not throwing many 200s. Mostly 180-195. Getting that one or more doubles a game has been a struggle.
I am 65, I started bowling in Jan of 2023 after being away almost 35 years. I sat at 187 for a year. Couldn't break it. Why? Because of the ten pin. So then I dedicated a month straight playing low ball. Ten pin first. Seven pin second. Ten pin. Ten pin. Ten pin. Ten pin. Now I am a 215ish avg depends on what league. But lowest is 206 on challenge league. 220 on normal league. Ten pin. Ten pin. Ten pin. Second thing I did. I really really really practiced on hitting my target. I tried arrows. I tried dots. I went back to arrows, I went back to dots. Then I met the legend CK Moore. I spent a weekend clinic with him. He changed my thought process on targeting. He explaines that, yes, your ball can move a bit before the break point, but targeting the break is what the pros do best. So I no longer look at arrows or dots, I only care about the break point on the pattern, then adjust my body and shot around where I think it is. Holy cow. What a game changers. Where my buddies worry about missing thier board or dot.. I am rolling into a "swimming pool" down lane. Next. I changed my montra on the approach. I wipe my ball. I step on the approach. "Just roll strikes, score will take care of itself". Step and roll. Next thing I did. And this helped the most. I stopped looking at the scoreboard. Once I did that, I took pressure off of myself. I roll third sport or fourth depending on league. So I can figure out when its the tenth frame. Mental is strong now. I expect strikes, and I accept spares. Strike for show, spare for dough. But the thing I notice most amongst my "peers".. they miss a lot of ten pins, but I never see them even practice it once during practice before league. Not once. I roll at the ten pin at least twice if not three times. Ten pins are score killers. I could roll a four bagger to start, miss a ten pin and end up with 190's. Ten pins. Ten pins. Ten pins. Oh and this year.. I rolled my first ever 800 series. I have some 299s and a few 290+s, but I will get that 300. I just know I will. Anyways. This is a great series. Great vid.
i need to get better at my mental game and geting better at my 7 pin both cost me not to average 200 when i average 200. Ineed to get better at not being down at myself when i know im a better bowler then what i bowl.
Spare shooting is the most critical part of breaking 200 to me. Open frames absolutely kill score. When I am over 200, my spare shooting is good. When I fall under it is due to missing spares. I am generally in the pocket, but I tend to leave a lot of 10 pins when I am not striking. I am inconsistent in picking up those 10 pins. When I am doing a good job picking up those 10 pins, my scores are well north of 200. When I am missing those 10 pins, it can be brutal. This has become a major part of my practice sessions now so I can correct that.

I wish I could go to Turbo and get some coaching. That would be very helpful.

What airport is Turbotech close to, if I want to come over for coaching?
Probably Detroit Metro. You might want to rent a car the rest of the way. Hope this helps.
There is some lane oil on your chin
Yes, once you get the physical part down, are you mentally prepared to bowl.
