The Slimline is actually remarkably easy to make, assuming you understand the need for attention. Simply use the correct bushings, practice with scrap wood instead of expensive blanks(acrylic, burl....) there are also ways to recover your blanks if you turn them slightly below the bushing.

I find turning to below the bushings and then building back up to level really helps to get a perfect fit.

Just started pen turning and found it to be true - hard to know what different kits available. Narrowing down to 4 or 5 is a great help. Nicely done video.

Very informative video Phil. I can get most of the kits in the UK but they are just called different names. Cheers, Huw

Hi thanks for sharing your beautiful work. I am struggling to find how many types of pen kits are there and how many different kind of Bushings. Is there any catalog or book where they are listed with illustrations of their shapes, can you please guide on that? Thanks.

Phil Gershwin Do you ever pick a pen kit because of the refill style it can except and because of the wood pattern or simply just the wood pattern. Examples of popular refill styles: Cross, Parker, ect.

Great Information Phil, thank you. I agree with you on the twisting style on the Sierra etc. type pens. What brands use the lower barrel twist style? Thanks.

    Hi Phil,
Thank you for sharing such an informative video, I enjoyed watching it and 👍from me all day long.
I've been woodturning on and off for about 3 month's now and ever since I got my lathe and watching UA-cam I've been interested in giving the Pen Turning a go.
But when I go to the Web sites that sell everything to do with pen turning, they recommend loads of different item's to turn pen's! Yet when I watch people turning pen's they all have a varied arsenal to help them!
Can you please advise me on the very basic equipment needed? I can always add to my equipment if I enjoy turning pens! Or do you know of a UA-cam video with the advice?
Your pen's are really nice, how long have you been making them?
I live in Yorkshire UK, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can find decent supplier's of pen kits!
    Thanks again, take care mate.
    Cheers
    Andy

Refill has no impact on my decision, but I do order hi quality ink for all my pens. No matter how cool the new looks if it does not write well the user will not be happy. The ink that come with the pen is usually pretty poor quality

+Phil Gershwin Where do you buy your ink ,i too do not like the ink that the pen kits come with.

It's hard to be sure until you look at the PDF instructions. I know that Woodcraft Wall Street twist from the barrel.

It's not that hard. You just use the bushings made for that pen

This is why I don't turn pens. This has got to be the most expensive thing you can do on a lathe.
