  • This week I turned a stunning Acrylic pen. The blank was from penkitsdirect.co.uk. The blank looked great, but the finished result was awesome!. Sanded using 240, 260, 400, 600, 800, 1000, and then onto the Micromesh wet sanding, up to 120,000 grit.

Try using a squeeze clamp. Makes it simple. Looks great. Going to turn one now. Thanks

Use your WW vice to press bits together. Works great for me.

I built pieces that go in head and tail stock and use them to press the pen together. Slow, controlled and gentle.

I have just purchased a deluxe pen press from Carbatec in Brisbane. I have not used it yet I have just opened the box. Previously I used my pedestal drill and a block of wood or my vise. Neither method was comfortable to use. I really can recommend you buy a pen press and also a pen blank drilling centre vise. Final comment there is no such thing as a cheap hobby, but you do get to learn new skills and have a lot of fun.

Great video and beautiful pen. Note - the micro mesh goes up to 12,000 (twelve thousand) grit rather than 120,000 (one hundred twenty thousand).

Nice pen turnout, btw, it’s a roughing gouge not a bowl gouge. 👍👍

What lathe and size are you using?

Hi Chris! In this video, I was using the Charnwood W815 lathe.

just a simple wood clamp would work great. Much better then a hammer.

Don't you have a vise? Even clamps would be better than the hammer. Pen turned out nice.

Mike Biggs only a small one, too small for this job. Have tried clamps too, but while it works to an extent, I really need to invest in a pen press!!!!

West Cork Woodworks You could also use your lathe as a press. A bit of wood each end and hey presto one pen press. Try it.

Honestly, I don't find it to work horribly with the hammer. But it's not the most efficient way to go about it either.

I use my lathe to press, you can get press disks at penn state for $11 or use a drill press.

I’d say your drill press needs bearings! Also sharpen your tools.
