Interestingly the Sony DH-790 is #1 on his list. I own one and I like it. I think the sound is very good but I would have thought a Denon would have been ranked higher just based on how many reviewers push them.

I've auditioned several mid-price receivers, one of them being the Denon 6500 and IMO it has a awful Digital sounding amplifier compared to the Sony and apart from improved dialogue there really wasn't much of a upgrade in sound quality! More channels doesn't necessarily mean better quality sound... why do you think most of the high-end receivers are only 7.2
I'm so glad I returned the Denon and reinvested that money into the Sony because now is sounds absolutely stunning.
Denon receivers are great if one likes having a soundtrack loud all of the time but when one has got the volume on low to medium that's where one can't hide the quality of its sound. A good quality AV doesn't just sound good on high volume it should sound good on low volume too! The Sony STRDN1080 uses a solid frame and beam chassis for vibration resistance and the lowest sound distortion possible. It also uses specially selected components, fitted with ES grade solder, for class-leading sound quality!
Conclusion; Denon 6500 (£1400) was better for movies but the budget Sony at £400 a faction of its price was just as good at 2-channel (music).

Matter of opinion. Sony av amps sound amazing with Mordaunt Short Aviano speakers as do Yamaha....I’ve had both.
