If your outdoor spigot is turned off, without a backflow preventer, will a drop in city pressure still affect in the house?

Can I do this with a water valve that is leaking? Im not sure what its called but theres 2 red and blue with a handle for on and off? I dont have anything hooked up to it. Not sure what they are for? They are by my laundry area, laundry tub.? One wont stop leaking when i turn it all the way off it leaks more. I have it turned a little bit to the on and it leaks less. Its soldiered brass. Fo you know how i can fix this? Thank you

Without a picture, I think I’m looking at a dual washing machine shut off valve. It’s like two ball valves one for hot one for cold hooked together with one lever. unfortunately, they are not rebuildable, you’ll have to either replace it or cap off the waterlines.

@MrHardware1 Thank you so much. I wish I could upload pictures here but it won't let me. The one is dripping so bad it fills a large pot in one day. Can that effect your water pressure? I have a well and septic tank. My water pressure isn't strong lately. For a couple months now. I'm a single mom trying to do this on my own with health problems. So I do appreciate all your help. Thank you & Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it?

@@Shannon- a slow drip typically will not affect water pressure. Send pictures of the valve to blair@mrhardware.com. If all your faucets including the laundry tub have low water pressure you may need to have someone take a look at the switch on your well pump. It controls the start and stop pressure of the pump so if the switch goes bad it could be turning off at 30psi instead of 40psi. If there is a filter on your well pump, it could be clogged and that would be cutting back the pressure. It should be on the wall or in the immediate proximity of the big blue bladder tank.

@MrHardware1 Thank you so much! So I can send pictures to.your website? Or is that an email? I actually fixed or replaced my pressure switch. The thing that has little feet that pushes right? My water stopped completely. So I had to investigate & Google. It was the pressure switch I believe? I need to drain the water in the tank so I can see how air is in the tank. But I have no where to drain it. It's in the basement & my laundry tub pump broke. Everything at once that's how it always goes! I don't think I can check the air with water in it right? I know there's a Guage reader. I will try to send the pictures. Thank you so much. You're amazing ❤️

@@Shannon- don’t bother checking air in that tank unless you find that your pump short cycles. It has very little to do with pressure, it acts as a buffer, so that when the pump compresses air in the tank, it will actually deliver a few gallons of water before the pump has to kick back on.

Blair could you please explain to me exactly what the purpose of a vacuum breaker on a faucet does? 🤨

Prevent flow of potentially harmful water back into the house which might be consumed at a different internal faucet potentially causing health issues.

Keeps ‘foreign water’ out of the potable water system.

Usually happens when a fire hydrant is being used, it creates a suction in the system all around. If you have a pool, pond, or just water in garden hose, it would suck it back in the city pipes causing a potential health threat for the public.
