    They’ve given Millie quite a story arc already - it may be that RTD never intended this to go on for more than one series. I have no idea - I don’t know any of the people involved but “dropped” is only one of the many reasons she might be moving on.

    Sarah Jane Smith left in the middle of Tom Baker's run and Leela came on. Then there's Mel leaving in the middle of series and having Ace join the 7th Doctor. So this is not unprecedented. I think Dodo also left before the end of a series.

    • @CulturePhilter
      @CulturePhilter  8 місяців тому +2

      True. I should have specified in revival Who. Also the uniqueness I refer to at the start isn’t just leaving mid-season but what I talk about later in the video of being a part-time companion. Not being there for every story in a row but sitting out some then popping in for one then sitting out some more.

    That was a very fair video, much fairer than the original Mirror article, which as you said implies that she was fired, if it wasn't already preplanned they would not be anywhere near as advanced with the new companion as they appear to be. One point, while it is true in New Who that companions tend not to leave mid season it is not true of Classic Who. Just to give a few examples, Ian & Barbara left mid season, in fact most Hartnell companions left mid season, although it is true the seasons were a lot longer in those days. Sarah Jane left mid season, as did Romana 2. Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough & Peri all left mid season as well. I suppose I'm making the point that just because something didn't happen with New Who doesn't mean it didn't happen earlier. Keep up the good work

    In the recent history, the companions who stayed over 2 series felt like they overstayed their welcome and the end of their stories was odd for it - Clara's impossible girl storyline ended with loose threads everywhere, and Amy and Rory were tiresome towards the end of their run. Clara did get some great character development but Amy didn't

    I think this is the perfect amount of time for a Ruby Sunday character arc to wrap up and be done with. IMO the best companions leave once their character arc is done, e.g. Bill, Donna, Martha. Companions like Amy and Rory as well as Clara ran out of steam as their character arcs were pretty much done and their time on screen was extended way too long, even if their endings were good. Rose is somewhere in the middle for me; she did lose steam halfway through series 2 but I can't think of a better 'ending' for her character. 13's companions didn't really have very defined character arcs so they don't apply here lol

    • @CulturePhilter

      I see what your saying but I think companions can have more than one arc following each other as their relationship with the Doctor changes.

    There had been reports Gibson was a diva and caused some friction behind the scenes, it's an Eccelston situation. Why does everyone assume people are so nice on Doctor Who and that this is just the 'natural order'? People can be pricks on any TV production, RTD himself is a mass egotist.

    I think it’s most effective when a companion has a clear, planned storyline and they leave at the end of that. I feel like 2 seasons should be the limit. When the Doctors only stay 3 seasons and the companions stay for longer than 2 seasons, that Doctor doesn’t really get the chance to have their own clear storyline as theirs is so colored by that one companions storyline. In the classic series, poor 5 was saddled with Tegan his entire run, save a couple stories. 6 had Peri. Tennant was able to shine as The Doctor, because he had 3 different companions. Smith was held back by the unending story of Amy and Rory, they should have been done after series 6. Then Capaldi wasn’t able to grow as much as he could have, I really appreciated his growth once he had a new companion… Clara’s time was unnecessarily long. I actually was disappointed when she didn’t actually die happy of old age in that Christmas special… that would have been a wonderful ending. Moffatt just couldn’t seem to let go of his companions when their time was clearly done. Same with Jodie, she had Yaz with her from start to finish… too much. So, a season and a half, while it seems odd storytelling-wise, could work out well if done right.

    • @CulturePhilter
      @CulturePhilter  8 місяців тому +1

    Well all I can say is its not unique. I am no longer a fan of this version of Doctor Who. But still love the classic series. If you go back to Tom Baker and Liz Sladen, who was hugely popular and truly superb and lovely as Sarah Jane Smith, she left partway through a season. She had joined the show for the last series of Jon Pertwee and then was with Tom Baker for two full seasons. She started a third season with him and did two stories, leaving at the end of Hand of Fear when the Doctor was summoned back to Gallifrey. It was a well written way to have her character go as despite them arguing beforehand, you got the feeling she would never have left the Doctor otherwise. So then the Doctor does a story on his own without a companion at all for the first time ever in the show. Then Leela is introduced in Face of Evil and continues to the end of the season with the classic Talons of Weng Chiang. Millie going part way is a bit odd in this day and age though, as all the hype about her joining the show is still fresh. She has barely started. To go after only a few episodes, as lets face it, eight episodes is hardly a long season compared to vintage Who is a bit feeble. There is more to this I am sure. But we wont find out exactly what for a long time....

    • @CulturePhilter
      @CulturePhilter  8 місяців тому

      Yes I meant to specify it was unique to the modern era of the show and that the particular way I was guessing she might leave - becoming a part time companion appearing in scattered episodes rather than concurrent before leaving was unique.

    With each series being shorter now, I'd prefer 1.5 series tenures to be the minimum. I'd ideally like both Doctors and companions to be around for 3 or 4 as standard, really, but I don't know how likely that'll be. It'll depend on the showrunner situation as much as anything, I guess.

    Maybe Millie Gibson is leaving a sinking ship before it does too much damage to her acting career. As for Varada Sethu, she will add a bit of talent and could easily overshadow Ncuti Gatwa as the better actor. Maybe had Varada Sethu played the Doctor rather than Jodie Whittaker back in 2018, Doctor Who would have been in better shape than it is, assuming better scripts and directing as well as acting.

      @@CulturePhilter True, it’s hard to get a really accurate picture of the fandom. I’ve followed Type 40 Doctor Who, William Who, Harbo Wholmes, Tharries, and Galactic Gals on UA-cam. Type 40 Doctor Who is probably the most balanced, Galactic Gals the most critical and William Who, Harbo Wholmes and Tharries less critical of the fan base. My own take as someone who has watched Dr Who since 1963 as a 9 year old, it’s got further and further away from William Hartnell Doctor after the classic series ended with Sylvester McCoy and even more so since Peter Capaldi was the Doctor, such that I no longer recognize it as Doctor Who.
