TBH the low budget has always been DW's charm for me. If anything, the Big Disney Bucks took me out of it a bit, at least for the specials. As much as I want to see artists of all the crafts (actors, props, costumes.. etc) get to shine and be payed well, without having to quickly turn out hack... how low can you go!

I think it's important to look at the TV landscape as a whole as this is not a Doctor Who-specific problem. The industry has been on its arse since covid and it still hasn't recovered. Look at a series like Bridgerton, arguably one of the biggest from the past few years. S3 aired this year but S4 isn't going to drop until 2026.

Or same budget, but twice as many episodes. Am rewatching older seasons with GF. More than once a puddle of water or water flowing in the street is an ominous omen. They don't need a huge budget. They need better writing and deeper characters.
It's a real curse of modern "prestige" television. I don't miss the bottle episodes, filler episodes and clip shows of old 23 episode TV seasons, but there is a greater balance to be found between 23 and 8.

If you want to watch them with subs in my language is almost impossible to find. Disney+ only aired what they produced and it wasn't even promoted so no NuWho or past seasons for reference. So I feel like they are forcing people to watch their Disneywho but seeing the null reaction when it aired I guess no one saw it anyway.

@@nikkicat254 My main issues with RTD2 especially when compared to RTD1:
      1) In RTD1 things were explained. Maybe not right away but eventually. Especially when something really didn't make sense at a glance, there was a quick technobabble line that at least tried to explain it. Now, RTD2 purposefully doesn't explain anything and thinks it's somehow clever.
      2) Cleverly planted seeds throughtout the season(s) that came together with a satisfying pay-off in RTD1 vs. "Ruby's mother is a normal woman, Sutekh was there since the 70s, Susan Twist existed on every planet since the 4th Doctor, 10th's face came back to find Donna and settle down, one of the greatest foes since the 1st Doctor was defeated by a game of catch, 'I might never explain who Mrs. Flood is' " etc. in RTD2
      3) RTD1 being progressive naturally to a point where I didn't even realize it until the Master pointed out that the Doctor's team ticks all demographic boxes, vs. in RTD2 being so forceful with it.

Summary - the part that people seem to be conflating is the show being cancelled and Disney choosing not to continue with the partnership. The odds of the BBC choosing to cancel the show is extremely low.
The only issue I can see is that if Disney decides not to go with a third season, the other streamers will ask WHY they didn't want to go ahead, and treat the show as damaged goods. So any deal made with the BBC may well be for less money they got with Disney, however much that may be. One also has to ask what will happen to the two seasons on Disney - will they stay on Disney, and the new streamer will have to start over AGAIN, with two seasons missing from the run?

If the Beeb need another production partner (they really don't, but if they wanted one) they should go with HBO. Bad Wolf have a pre-existing relationship with them with His Dark Materials and Industry. plus, in the US, the Max service is the home for series 1-13 of NuWho.
The downside would be that they don't quite have the international distribution clout of Disney, but, through HBO's partners, everyone still managed to see GoT, etc...

    • @fleason771

That's extremely unlikely. Max's reach like you say is not worldwide, in the UK & parts of Europe we don't have Max. We also don't have Hulu so Disney + in the UK for instance comes with Star content as standard.
Disney + allows Doctor Who to be distributed to the majority of the world's territories & with them also contributing to Doctor Who's production budget, it was a very good deal the BBC signed up to.

    • @DaddyStoat
      @DaddyStoat Місяць тому +2

@@fleason771 No, their reach isn’t as extensive or ubiquitous as that of the Mouse. But HBO has distribution agreements with many other networks worldwide, including Sky in the UK (although the UK would obviously only be showing Who on the BBC), Orange in France and Foxtel in Australia. I know people in Australia are irritated that Doctor Who has left the ABC, and that deal could be renegotiated if the show was to leave Disney. Max in the US also carries a lot of other BBC content (the rest of the old Whoniverse - Sarah Jane, Torchwood, Class, etc), Luther, Top Gear and plenty more, so there’d be some continuity in their relationship there.

As a 55-yo, who has been watching Doctor Who for as long as I can remember, good stories have always been more important than a huge effects budget. The effects budget for the Classic show was often £5, tinsel, bubble wrap, and paint - per season, not per episode - and they still managed to produce an excellent show for the whole family.
Doctor Who doesn’t need a big budget (though it does make everything look far more impressive, admittedly). What it does need is good stories. And, despite what you may think of him, Russell T Davies is a great storyteller.

I feel the natural home for Doctor Who in America has always been PBS. It's where Doctor Who originally aired in the US and remained until 2013 or so when BBC America became widely available.
Even now the majority of BBC and ITV shows that are shown in the US air on PBS. And PBS is a free station that airs in every home in every US city so has the widest potential access. I dont know why RTD is dissing PBS but it is the closest equivalent we have to the BBC in this country.
The choice of Disney feels like the absolute opposite, being the most exclusive subscription service they could have chosen. Even if Disney grew exponentially as a result of Doctor Who (and it doesnt sound like they have) by their very nature, they will never have the reach in the US that PBS has. Some of the big cable companies have tried to offer Disney in their basic package but Disney have refused to uphold their end of the bargain so it remains out of reach for quite alot of people. Being on PBS would be the same in the majority of households as being on NBC, CBS or ABC but without commercial interruptions.
I cannot see that Doctor Who being on Disney will ever be the answer that RTD hopes it will be. But I guess he is more interested in Disney's money than actual viewership.

I don’t understand why the show was never kept as a BBC entity anyhow. So with Disney we got some lovely effects, Doctor Who has never been about blockbuster effects. It’s always been about the story telling. Hell the original BBC run was on a shoestring budget but there are some stunning stories. People just need to lower their expectations, not everything needs to be blockbuster to compete with Marvel or Star Wars. I would rather have the 12-13 episode seasons than just 8. Whilst having a worldwide audience in recent years, Doctor Who is primarily a British sci-fi show. Disney is just running interference and spoiling us getting what we all want, a show once a year with no worries about US style renewal BS.

By that June, Davies was working on the fourth script for the series, despite it not yet being commissioned, with recording expected to begin in early 2025, and an expected release within 2026.

It's interesting to think that 2025 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Doctor Who revival. (In classic Who terms, that's when we got "The Five Doctors"!) If Disney does decide not to renew the agreement and DW goes back to the BBC and Bad Wolf, the revival's 20th anniversary strikes me as a good year to bring it back to its roots. And if, God forbid, DW does get canceled or go on indefinite hiatus, a 20-year run for a revival series ain't bad!

I've been a fan of Doctor Who since the 1980s when it aired on PBS here in the US and I'll continue to support the show no matter where it's aired. Although it would be convenient to watch it on Disney+ or some other streaming service, the budget doesn't matter that much to me - it's the plotlines and how the stories are presented. And yes, I like the quarries. Maybe a good middle ground would be to make BBC iPlayer available world wide and thus cut out the middle man. Again, whatever goes down with the House of Mouse and wherever the Beeb decides to air it on this side of the Atlantic, I'll be watching, munching on popcorn, and cheering the Doctor on.

      @lezking5060 Місяць тому +2

The thing is, you can't just compare current Doctor Who viewing figures with previous Doctor Who viewing figures, and use that "analysis" alone.
The "broadcasting/streaming" landscape has changed, a lot, even since 2005.
There is so much choice for each individual viewer, but each viewer still only has the same number of "viewing hours" available.
The cost of streaming services (and spread of people's favourite shows, across multiple services) has also increased, whilst other costs have increased... and if there is a choice between heating/eating, or having an extra 2 or 3 subscription services every month... most sensible people have been more choosy about what they watch, and opt to drop streaming services from their outgoings.
There aren't enough viewers available, to keep the same number of viewing hours over an increasing number of providers.
So, viewing figures are down across the board - that's why so many apparently "popular" or "well received" series have been unexpectedly dropped, or reduced (and Netflix and Disney, I understand, are particularly noted for that).
Already, a number of streaming services are really feeling the strain. It's a bit like the "dot.com" bubble from a few years back, that eventually burst.
The same will happen to the streaming services. Some will fail - some will have to merge with others, and eventually, the platform will stabilise.

Gotta agree with Bazzer124, I've been a fan since the early 70s when WTTW in Chicago would do Doctor Who, Blakes 7, Dave Allen, The 2 Ronnies, and of course Monty Python, so I have seen a bit of BBC TV. Didn't know if I would like the Jodie Whittaker era, but I always liked the stories as much as the cast, now they keep having delays and gap years, it's like it's an afterthought, not one of BBC's main programs. At this point, if they don't want to put forth any effort they should end it, or should have ended it in the David Tennant, or Matt Smith era, I doubt if even bringing back Clara would save the show. Sorry my opinion, but if it ended tomorrow I would just go back to getting the box sets from the library and watch them over again, It's better to end it, rather than make people happy it's gone, that's no way to treat such a good old show.

We have to be honest about Doctor Who and realise how much TV has changed. The BBC partnered with Disney because it’s an expensive show to make and they also wanted to reach beyond the UK as a serious show looking to capture new fans. I’m a classic fan and agree with all the cliches around the shows low budget charm and how story is more important. But in 2024 and onwards VFX is important to viewers under 30. A story does have to capture this group quickly and hold their attention. Doctor Who has to sing for its supper now because there is so much competition in TV and social media now. I always felt cautious when the Disney came on board just because I watched what happened to a lot of the Star Wars spin offs of which most don’t go beyond 3 seasons. Or take years to get to the next. RTD is doing his best to keep hope alive but the truth is it’s not up to him. I agree that the show won’t die but it needs grit and edge. Also I would prefer Amazon over Netflix just because Amazon seems to keep going with series if they go well. I doubt we’d see new episodes of Doctor Who on Netflix or Disney in a decades time.

It's not negative nellies. Series one of Doctor Who (2023 - ) has been a disaster for Disney. Disney decided months ago that it wouldn't renew. It has only once renewed a non-comedy scripted show for a third series once and that was The Mandolorian. Disney are out because the back to back filming of season 2 made any hope of course correcting the terribleness of season one impossible. The spin-off is a contractual obligation of the Disney, Bad Wolf, BBC Studios deal. Doctor Who (2023 - ) is dead at Disney. If BBC Studios is willing to front the money alone or it can find a partner it could continue but I don't think BBC Studios will do it alone..

The idea that long waits between seasons can damage momentum seems to me a lot like the old TV mindset. We see increasingly more 2+ year gaps on popular streaming shows with little negative impact. Audiences now are inundated with content, along with more ways to engage with fandom (eg: this channel) thus quality over quantity should be the main goal.

I’m not freakin gout because I know the BBC would NEVER let this show be cancelled unless fandom for Doctor Who died down like in 1989. They need a show with sci-fi elements because they pretty much only have crime dramas. Plus, waiting for a renewal happens all the time and a gap year isn’t so bad when every other show does it.

I think they’ve gotta hire some new writers and just sack RTD altogether. He’s had plenty of time and chances to make something good but with the four anniversary episodes along with the rest of the first season on Disney+, he ended up losing a lot of the fan base because he can’t write good stories anymore. We need better writers. And I hope that they get it because the new doctor has some serious potential. He’s doing a great job with what he’s got.

I thought season 1 had a "stakes too high" problem. Too many of the episodes had absurdly high stakes, to the point that you knew they wouldn't result in any long-term consequences. It just sucked all the drama out of the episodes because you knew The Doctor was going to somehow reverse everything, so none of the bad things you were seeing actually mattered. I mean the season finale was a literal copy of Marvel's Infinity War, and I felt the same way at the middle of the finale as I felt at the end of Infinity War: they killed too many key people, this is going to get completely reversed by the end. That too-obvious realization just sapped all the drama out of the rest of the episode for me, because nothing else that happened mattered until the dramatic reversal we all knew was coming at the end.
Regarding why Disney Plus might be dragging their feet, I think it's because a fair amount of people watch streaming programming like I do. I hate watching a streaming series one episode a week. So I'll wait until the entire season has dropped before I watch one episode. I think a lot of people consume streaming content like that, which probably throws off the numbers a bit. If the reviews of the episodes aren't great, people who consume streaming like me might decide it's not worth it to pay for Disney plus to watch a lackluster season. I was already paying for D+, so I still watched it. But I imagine there were a fair amount of people who are putting off watching the season until there's something else they also want to watch on D+. Entertainment executives seem to have trouble seeing the "big picture", preferring instant gratification. If the immediate numbers aren't what they expected, they're very likely to get squeamish and want to prematurely pull the plug on something. A lot of great shows have died after a single season because of that.

I don't even like the new Doctor Who at all but to make the first season only 8 episodes long so that some spin-off specials could be made was a bone-headed move. We don't need a "Whoniverse". The BBC made a HUGE mistake bringing RTD back. Fans fighting with each other? No confirmation of contract renewal? No confirmation of a 3rd season? A possible "gap year"? If it were anyone else in charge we wouldn't be going through any of this garbage. This channel even seems like a Doctor Who propaganda show. I'm sure the fans who stuck around must be pretty ticked off about all this. I would be.

@@frolicchris I think that a fair comment but I also believe he whether intentionally or not has caused the opposite to happen. I believe we need to go back to where the show had a head writer and a separate showrunner. It is too much for one person to pull of effectively. I stand by my point though that he has lied to the audience of DW on more than one occasion and that is very poor practise. I hope you enjoy your day.

Ellie wants us all to be nice to people who have different opinions than we do? But this is the Internet! People who disagree with us on the Internet are evil. Otherwise, they would agree with us, right? However, I know Ellie isn't evil because I agree with her. The Internet would be a much nicer place if everyone was nice. Yay, since I agree with Ellie, that means I'm not evil either. This was an awesome video!!! Thank you, Ellie.
