Yeah, I wouldn't be mad at a BBC budget. Blink is a masterpiece and it was a house and a video store with a few statues. Brilliant. The budget doesn't make the show.
TBH the low budget has always been DW's charm for me. If anything, the Big Disney Bucks took me out of it a bit, at least for the specials. As much as I want to see artists of all the crafts (actors, props, costumes.. etc) get to shine and be payed well, without having to quickly turn out hack... how low can you go!
I think it's important to look at the TV landscape as a whole as this is not a Doctor Who-specific problem. The industry has been on its arse since covid and it still hasn't recovered. Look at a series like Bridgerton, arguably one of the biggest from the past few years. S3 aired this year but S4 isn't going to drop until 2026.
Or same budget, but twice as many episodes. Am rewatching older seasons with GF. More than once a puddle of water or water flowing in the street is an ominous omen. They don't need a huge budget. They need better writing and deeper characters. It's a real curse of modern "prestige" television. I don't miss the bottle episodes, filler episodes and clip shows of old 23 episode TV seasons, but there is a greater balance to be found between 23 and 8.
A good idea, a good story, well written script, good acting, special effects aren't that important to me.

Wasn't "Boom" (my absolute favourite of the past season) filmed in a quarry?😁 While I agree with your general idea, it doesn't always have to be a quarry, I don't recall many quarry-filmed episodes in the Moffat era, yet it's the era I enjoy rewatching most, especially Matt Smith's run.
Monster of the week stories that affect the bigger plot. those are the best. River song with Vashta Nerada was a type of a weekly episode(s).. Well guess what :P
As an non-Brit, what matters to me is that *some* international streaming service continues to distribute Doctor Who, and ideally, that there would be one place where all seasons could be viewed (which is *not* what we have now). I wouldn't mind subscribing to iPlayer for it, but I'm not sure that's even an option for anyone outside the UK
Can confirm: I live in USA and had to use a VPN, proper UK postal code and all that jazz to even begin signing up. I happen to have both Max and Disney+ subscriptions anyway, but it'd be great to have access to BBC iPlayer internationally.
It’s not because of the bbc license fee that has to be paid and it region locked if they made it a paid service outside of the United Kingdom then it would be like us helping fun the doctor more then just through what merchandise we are allowed get in America cause iplayer got it all consulted onto iplayer last November here in America it broke up onto 3 services Britbox for the classic era if they still have it max for seasons 1-13 of the modern era and the new content on Disney+ also Tubi has the classic era for now and the whoiverse thing is a uk exclusive thing cause we not none of the other new content that was released so far
@ugolomb that too. In my ranch there's no bbc channel anymore so past seasons didn't air on TV or streaming. You have to use ☠️ to watch the old seasons. If you want to watch them with subs in my language is almost impossible to find. Disney+ only aired what they produced and it wasn't even promoted so no NuWho or past seasons for reference. So I feel like they are forcing people to watch their Disneywho but seeing the null reaction when it aired I guess no one saw it anyway.
Subjectively I love the Doctor and like Ruby but honestly, RTD's return was a long-awaited, over-hyped disappointment. Hoping season 2 is better, especially script-wise. Also, I've been watching Doctor Who since 1978 and I don't have many years-long skips left in me. Cheers
I agree, so far I wasn't impressed with what RTD has done since his return, frankly the musical stuff and also talking babies seemed a bit silly to me. I mean the talking babies were cute, but didn't really seem right for Doctor Who! And again not a fan of the musicals, I never like it when any show goes musical!
@@nikkicat254 My main issues with RTD2 especially when compared to RTD1: 1) In RTD1 things were explained. Maybe not right away but eventually. Especially when something really didn't make sense at a glance, there was a quick technobabble line that at least tried to explain it. Now, RTD2 purposefully doesn't explain anything and thinks it's somehow clever. 2) Cleverly planted seeds throughtout the season(s) that came together with a satisfying pay-off in RTD1 vs. "Ruby's mother is a normal woman, Sutekh was there since the 70s, Susan Twist existed on every planet since the 4th Doctor, 10th's face came back to find Donna and settle down, one of the greatest foes since the 1st Doctor was defeated by a game of catch, 'I might never explain who Mrs. Flood is' " etc. in RTD2 3) RTD1 being progressive naturally to a point where I didn't even realize it until the Master pointed out that the Doctor's team ticks all demographic boxes, vs. in RTD2 being so forceful with it.
I agree about the musicals. It’s just not Doctor Who. And this is coming from someone who likes musicals, when it makes sense and not every other episode. There is such a thing as overkill.
I’m sorry, but we need to all chill about Season 3. We haven’t even gotten season 2 yet. Most shows don’t get renewal notices 2 seasons ahead. Edit added: “Hey, I just got married and had my honeymoon. I wonder who my third wife will be,,,,,”
Summary - the part that people seem to be conflating is the show being cancelled and Disney choosing not to continue with the partnership. The odds of the BBC choosing to cancel the show is extremely low. The only issue I can see is that if Disney decides not to go with a third season, the other streamers will ask WHY they didn't want to go ahead, and treat the show as damaged goods. So any deal made with the BBC may well be for less money they got with Disney, however much that may be. One also has to ask what will happen to the two seasons on Disney - will they stay on Disney, and the new streamer will have to start over AGAIN, with two seasons missing from the run?
Considering BBC owns the rights, they would retain the episodes, unless there was some very inteligent/stupid decision making while creating the contract
@@truthert There's a small chance that Disney has exclusive right to showing "their" episodes for a number of years, so while they'd be available on IPlayer as they are now, there's a chance we'd see all the past episodes on one service (in America and other countries that iPlayer doesn't reach), the Disney seasons on Disney, and any later episodes somewhere else. Summary - BBC needs to get all the episodes on one service outside of the UK.
I know what they’re trying to do, but I really wish they’d stick to the season structure from 2005 because season two of modern Doctor Who holds very good memories for a lot of people with the introduction of David Tennant.
@@BarryLetts379 Not our fault he's a much-loved actor. I'd watch another seven seasons of him. Not even going to deny it. I like the other doctors, don't get me wrong, but he gave it his absolute all.
I personally would say that everyone looks at Series 2 with nostalgia goggles on, because outside the finale I don’t think it was actually that good. Tennant’s performance keeps it afloat for the most part.
I don't care if it's a futuristic high budget space ship or a run down school as long as the story and the acting fits that setting I'm satisfied. I don't watch Doctor Who for the visual effects.
@@bazzer124 nah the moment they made jodie whittaker into the doctor, it went EXTREMELY downhill. Even with ncuti being doctor now its horrid story writing and character developments
@@pyroronnie2473 #13 is when Chibnall took over as show runner. #14 (or 10½, if you prefer) and #15 are RTD and his show running has so far been shite as well. IMO all three Doctors involved were excellent as the Doctor but had no solid scripts/writing to work with. Cheers....

@@pyroronnie2473agreed, with a few exceptions: Dalek episodes, when Jack Harkness showed up, the fugitive doctor (not the timeless child abomination, just this one character 😁), just a few aspects of the flux (not the event itself, that was horrid), the cameos in power of the doctor, 14 twist (jaw dropping!), the return of Tennant (albeit brief), Ruby Sunday (I find the character interesting, though the stories were mostly weak) and, last but not least, Boom 😁
But life goes on, doesn't it? Ruthlessly! And what happens, you might wonder.. Oh, what happens to the mysterious traveler in time and space known as the doctor? I'm sorry to say his story ends in absolute terror. Night-night!
The thing is with all the big budget and flash of Disney they didn’t deliver a good series of Doctor Who as the stories for the most part were abysmal. With good writing any show will succeed, Doctor Who does not need Disney and personally speaking I kind of hope Disney do drop it, Disney DW is not working for me 😞
I actually thought the central arc of elder gods being released from the void and facing the Doctor one by one was actually pretty good. There was some utter crap episodes in there though which left a sour taste in the mouth though.
If the Beeb need another production partner (they really don't, but if they wanted one) they should go with HBO. Bad Wolf have a pre-existing relationship with them with His Dark Materials and Industry. plus, in the US, the Max service is the home for series 1-13 of NuWho. The downside would be that they don't quite have the international distribution clout of Disney, but, through HBO's partners, everyone still managed to see GoT, etc...
That's extremely unlikely. Max's reach like you say is not worldwide, in the UK & parts of Europe we don't have Max. We also don't have Hulu so Disney + in the UK for instance comes with Star content as standard. Disney + allows Doctor Who to be distributed to the majority of the world's territories & with them also contributing to Doctor Who's production budget, it was a very good deal the BBC signed up to.
@@fleason771 No, their reach isn’t as extensive or ubiquitous as that of the Mouse. But HBO has distribution agreements with many other networks worldwide, including Sky in the UK (although the UK would obviously only be showing Who on the BBC), Orange in France and Foxtel in Australia. I know people in Australia are irritated that Doctor Who has left the ABC, and that deal could be renegotiated if the show was to leave Disney. Max in the US also carries a lot of other BBC content (the rest of the old Whoniverse - Sarah Jane, Torchwood, Class, etc), Luther, Top Gear and plenty more, so there’d be some continuity in their relationship there.
As a 55-yo, who has been watching Doctor Who for as long as I can remember, good stories have always been more important than a huge effects budget. The effects budget for the Classic show was often £5, tinsel, bubble wrap, and paint - per season, not per episode - and they still managed to produce an excellent show for the whole family. Doctor Who doesn’t need a big budget (though it does make everything look far more impressive, admittedly). What it does need is good stories. And, despite what you may think of him, Russell T Davies is a great storyteller. Cheers,
I agree he is, but his doctor who, this first re season is more a fail than a win. Gaping problems which I guess is why things are looking so sparse now
You’re right about the budget - they discovered in one of Colin Baker’s stories that the BBC had paid more to hire a prop door than they were paying Nicola Bryant as Peri!
I wouldn't be mad if Disney dropped Doctor Who but only if I can still get to watched it somehow. Of course in the U.K. you don't care because you get to watch it on TV or on iPlayer but we don't have access to iPlayer here in Canada. So if the deal goes bust with Disney and they can't make a deal with one of the other streaming services I hope they shop it around to other countries like they did in the old days.
I feel the natural home for Doctor Who in America has always been PBS. It's where Doctor Who originally aired in the US and remained until 2013 or so when BBC America became widely available. Even now the majority of BBC and ITV shows that are shown in the US air on PBS. And PBS is a free station that airs in every home in every US city so has the widest potential access. I dont know why RTD is dissing PBS but it is the closest equivalent we have to the BBC in this country. The choice of Disney feels like the absolute opposite, being the most exclusive subscription service they could have chosen. Even if Disney grew exponentially as a result of Doctor Who (and it doesnt sound like they have) by their very nature, they will never have the reach in the US that PBS has. Some of the big cable companies have tried to offer Disney in their basic package but Disney have refused to uphold their end of the bargain so it remains out of reach for quite alot of people. Being on PBS would be the same in the majority of households as being on NBC, CBS or ABC but without commercial interruptions. I cannot see that Doctor Who being on Disney will ever be the answer that RTD hopes it will be. But I guess he is more interested in Disney's money than actual viewership.
Boom was the perfect example. I found the sfx in that episode distracting ting, more so than if it had been cheaply filmed in a quarry. I felt nothing looked real. So I for one would prefer either more restraint with the larger budget, or just return to a smaller budget.
Gotta point this out. "A plan" is not a promise. I planned to go on holiday in 2020, but something came up. I didn't promise, and neither did Russell. He said what the plan was. But if the BBC has budget issues, or if Disney+ pull out, then they might be forced to have a gap year. It's not a promise.
Regardless of what people felt about the chibnall/Whitaker era, visually speaking it looked awesome. That was on a BBC only budget. So they can definitely go it alone
I don’t understand why the show was never kept as a BBC entity anyhow. So with Disney we got some lovely effects, Doctor Who has never been about blockbuster effects. It’s always been about the story telling. Hell the original BBC run was on a shoestring budget but there are some stunning stories. People just need to lower their expectations, not everything needs to be blockbuster to compete with Marvel or Star Wars. I would rather have the 12-13 episode seasons than just 8. Whilst having a worldwide audience in recent years, Doctor Who is primarily a British sci-fi show. Disney is just running interference and spoiling us getting what we all want, a show once a year with no worries about US style renewal BS.
If Season 3 doesn't air in 2026 it better be a he'll of a good season, and hell of a good new doctor(which seems likely to be coming at the end of it).
I love Doctor Who, but I can't help but think things still have been going downhill on average. New Doctor's and Companions I'm fine with. Individuals stories haven't been as hooking and overall plots not that thrilling.
I've enjoyed a few eps. I really liked Dot and Bubble. But I'm almost wondering if they should consider going back to the old 4 ep format, but instead 2 ep 1 hr. Like the Library episodes. I think Doc does better in long form as compared to the 1 ep short form.
Besides throwing a bit more money into the mix, in the United States Disney+ knows what to do with Doctor Who as little as BBC America did. It seems like they just plugged the show into their listings and expected people to magically show up. Yes, Doctor Who has a broad and loyal following, but seemingly Disney+ hasn't effectively worked at getting new viewers.

It's interesting to think that 2025 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Doctor Who revival. (In classic Who terms, that's when we got "The Five Doctors"!) If Disney does decide not to renew the agreement and DW goes back to the BBC and Bad Wolf, the revival's 20th anniversary strikes me as a good year to bring it back to its roots. And if, God forbid, DW does get canceled or go on indefinite hiatus, a 20-year run for a revival series ain't bad!
I stopped watching the show a long long time ago and kept informed with some channels but I dont care about it anymore, sorry. I still have a fond place for NuWho in my heart but I think Im not the audience for it anymore.
The good thing about “low budget” series for me or a BBC Budget. Is that you do what you can with the money you have and that’s what creates the magic! I think if you have an endless porridge pot of cash, it means you can buy and do everything so quick. Yes that’s good but there was always a charm about things being made with a budget! It allows for more creativity and that for me translates to the screen!
I became a fan of the show when every planet in the universe was filmed in a quarry in North London! Totally agree the story and acting is far more important than high budget visual effects.
@@DrWhoFanJ wow I bet you're fun at parties! I just meant that they used the same gravel pit throughout the 70s and 80s, the location is immaterial. But you do you.
I've been a fan of Doctor Who since the 1980s when it aired on PBS here in the US and I'll continue to support the show no matter where it's aired. Although it would be convenient to watch it on Disney+ or some other streaming service, the budget doesn't matter that much to me - it's the plotlines and how the stories are presented. And yes, I like the quarries. Maybe a good middle ground would be to make BBC iPlayer available world wide and thus cut out the middle man. Again, whatever goes down with the House of Mouse and wherever the Beeb decides to air it on this side of the Atlantic, I'll be watching, munching on popcorn, and cheering the Doctor on.
Once again. Doctor Who was top 10 trending on Disney+ every episode. That's worldwide. That's counting the fact that they don't air DW in the UK. Doctor Who isn't at risk. Don't feed the bullshit.
If you’re saying this video is “feeding the bullshit”, that’s simply not true. This is a breakdown of the facts, the quotes, and some of the very real possibilities for what could happen next. Those channels that spew out “CANCELLED” “FIRED” and call everything a woke flaming disaster, they’re the ones with the bullshit.
@mvprindle top ten trending. Worldwide. On an app wirh 170 million subscribers. With a chunk of the world unable to watch it. Disney doesn't give a fuck what the BBCs cable numbers are. Disney doesn't even consider Cable a real medium for viewing anymore.
The thing is, you can't just compare current Doctor Who viewing figures with previous Doctor Who viewing figures, and use that "analysis" alone. The "broadcasting/streaming" landscape has changed, a lot, even since 2005. There is so much choice for each individual viewer, but each viewer still only has the same number of "viewing hours" available. The cost of streaming services (and spread of people's favourite shows, across multiple services) has also increased, whilst other costs have increased... and if there is a choice between heating/eating, or having an extra 2 or 3 subscription services every month... most sensible people have been more choosy about what they watch, and opt to drop streaming services from their outgoings. There aren't enough viewers available, to keep the same number of viewing hours over an increasing number of providers. So, viewing figures are down across the board - that's why so many apparently "popular" or "well received" series have been unexpectedly dropped, or reduced (and Netflix and Disney, I understand, are particularly noted for that). Already, a number of streaming services are really feeling the strain. It's a bit like the "dot.com" bubble from a few years back, that eventually burst. The same will happen to the streaming services. Some will fail - some will have to merge with others, and eventually, the platform will stabilise.
Gotta agree with Bazzer124, I've been a fan since the early 70s when WTTW in Chicago would do Doctor Who, Blakes 7, Dave Allen, The 2 Ronnies, and of course Monty Python, so I have seen a bit of BBC TV. Didn't know if I would like the Jodie Whittaker era, but I always liked the stories as much as the cast, now they keep having delays and gap years, it's like it's an afterthought, not one of BBC's main programs. At this point, if they don't want to put forth any effort they should end it, or should have ended it in the David Tennant, or Matt Smith era, I doubt if even bringing back Clara would save the show. Sorry my opinion, but if it ended tomorrow I would just go back to getting the box sets from the library and watch them over again, It's better to end it, rather than make people happy it's gone, that's no way to treat such a good old show.
Btw, if the BBC goes back to making Doctor Who on it’s own, then they would more than likely bring DW back to Free-to-air services INTERNATIONALLY, and that wouldn’t be the worst thing.
Yeah, the old show played on the SciFi channel, PBS and BBC America. Disney wanting money for a Gay Propaganda version of the character is the worst deal of the century!
I've always been a little nervous about having Disney, or any of the big streaming services involved. Their business model relies on them bringing in new customers and older shows don't do that, thus why shows tend to last 3-4 seasons at the most...
As a life long fan who started watching when Jon Pertwee was the Doctor. I watched as the show got tired, strained and then axed in 1988. Then it came back stronger than ever. This needs to happen again.
I'm sorry Ellie you said family oriented. The Doctor suggestively thrusting his groin at anyone, male or female, is not suitable for family viewing. This was the episode where he totally abandoned the one person he vowed to protect so he could knock boots with a total stranger. Again this applies whether they are male or female. This is not a wholesome message to be putting out as family viewing.
I agree. It’s so wrong for the Doctor to be behaving like this. Russell T Davies never fully understood how to write the Doctor correctly. It’s supposed to be a science fiction adventure series not a soap opera and with an eccentric actor who convinces us that they’re alien. Gatwa acts too human.
I can't imagine Nchuti staying on if it doesn't go ahead with Disney, he'll feel the pull of other work which would be an incredible shame as he's so perfect for the role. This should have been a three season deal. If it does return to the BBC it will regenerate again but I wouldn't be happy if Nchuti leaves after just two short seasons.
If it was BBC going it solo, then we would have quicker decisions. Watch I Claudius. 70s BBC period drama about Rome...not an action scene in sight just brilliant acting and plot. B7 series 4 was a flash decision at the end of S3 being on air when S4 announced ; a surprise to all involved. DW in the 80s did have a hostile public perception of not cool and management personal feelings rather the licence payers interests.
We have to be honest about Doctor Who and realise how much TV has changed. The BBC partnered with Disney because it’s an expensive show to make and they also wanted to reach beyond the UK as a serious show looking to capture new fans. I’m a classic fan and agree with all the cliches around the shows low budget charm and how story is more important. But in 2024 and onwards VFX is important to viewers under 30. A story does have to capture this group quickly and hold their attention. Doctor Who has to sing for its supper now because there is so much competition in TV and social media now. I always felt cautious when the Disney came on board just because I watched what happened to a lot of the Star Wars spin offs of which most don’t go beyond 3 seasons. Or take years to get to the next. RTD is doing his best to keep hope alive but the truth is it’s not up to him. I agree that the show won’t die but it needs grit and edge. Also I would prefer Amazon over Netflix just because Amazon seems to keep going with series if they go well. I doubt we’d see new episodes of Doctor Who on Netflix or Disney in a decades time.
Antiwoke rage baiters have poisoned the DW community. And every other online community for that matter. So much hate. I loved this season and cant wait for the next one!
Theirs is no hope for the star wars fandom, and we have witnessed the full return of the fandom meance thanks to star wars theory joining their ranks like seriously that fandom is screwed
I work in the industry. And if it becomes SOP, that 8 episodes of series television takes two years to produce .... we're doomed. If the combined efforts of Disney and the Beeb can't do it on 9 months or less, they might as well give up right now.
doctor who has been a mix of ups and downs this year either way 15th doctor and Ruby sunday are definitely in my top favourite 5 companions/doctor list
If Disney was to drop Dr Who, I would want Amazon to be the streaming service to help make it,could you imagine Dr Who with the budget of Rings of Power or the Boys, it would amazing.
Yeah sure, there are people still watching. Just a shame what's left watching is not many as a big majority have stopped watching. Well at least until we get good stories and a decent lead actor. SO yes sack the bloody lot of em and then we may come back if it's a decent show runner and writers etc
I’d certainly not mind seeing a return to the Poly of Wales for locations every week. Plots and acting are key, firing imagination with great writing without agendas (sorry to harp on) trump any level of SFX budget for me. Not that I’ve not loved the high-budget DW!
@@Sparksparky1not just; the deal obliged TV networks outside of UK and Ireland (including bbc's own overseas subsidiaries, such as the version of BBC First that we have here in Turkey) to drop doctor who from their broadcasts, and even the previous episodes archives (which is where I could find select previous episodes/seasons of some bbc shows in the digital TV platform I've been subscribed to, which doesn't include doctor who anymore 😕) and as such, I've been forced to search for new doctor who content through pirated means. I also tune in to a Web streaming service that has bbc1 live broadcast, in the day and hour a new episode airs, but I'm not sure how legitimate this service is, and it has several downsides such as the annoying spoken descriptions of every scene, no subtitles (not even in English; my English is good enough, but not in some regional accents, and sometimes the plot is so convoluted that I require assistance to understand what exactly is going on), and the unavailability of pause/rewind function, so that so far I had to resort to the pirating sites for almost all episodes even after watching them live on bbc1, with the exception of a few that I really didn't like, and for some of which I watched the doctor who confidential on BBC 3 afterwards, so that I figured out what the episodes themselves were about...
I really enjoyed season 1 and I'm excited to see season 2! I think ncuti and millie have been incredible as the fifteenth doctor and ruby sunday and I'm looking forward to seeing varada sethu as belinda chandra! I don't expect we'll find out anything about season 3 until season 2 has aired, which won't be till next year so I feel like we should be patient and not get ahead of ourselves. I'd also be happy either way if Disney remained involved in doctor who, or if it just went back to the bbc. Great video, thanks Who Culture! 😊😊
It's not negative nellies. Series one of Doctor Who (2023 - ) has been a disaster for Disney. Disney decided months ago that it wouldn't renew. It has only once renewed a non-comedy scripted show for a third series once and that was The Mandolorian. Disney are out because the back to back filming of season 2 made any hope of course correcting the terribleness of season one impossible. The spin-off is a contractual obligation of the Disney, Bad Wolf, BBC Studios deal. Doctor Who (2023 - ) is dead at Disney. If BBC Studios is willing to front the money alone or it can find a partner it could continue but I don't think BBC Studios will do it alone..
@@DrWhoFanJ Please explain. The Bad Wolf show is not good and it isn't popular with an international audience. BBC One isn't the primary commissioner of the show and it has had minimal impact for Disney. How do I know this? Because streamers shout from the rooftop when a show does well. Disney hasn't done that.
they could course correct, the toy maker made a significant comment to the doctor which could easilly undo the entire timeless child disaster, in the episode The Giggle the toymaker smuggly says to the doctor "Do you like what I have done to your past?" This could easilly be used to revert all the crap that no one likes, and to be honest was more then likely put there just incase they needed to do just that, but RTD had dug himself a hole and cant come out of it without shame, so he is trying to dig a tunnel to the other side now, it will take a new showrunner who spotted this loophole to fix this
@@DoctorTimelord They can't course correct because they didn't wait for the reaction to a truly terrible season before shooting the next. You are right that the show only has a future with a different showrunner who isn't drunk on insane ideology who can tell the difference between popular entertainment and identity politics. I fear too much damage has been done to the brand and it needs to be rested.
I think the biggest problem doctor who has done right now is made it a brand new collection of Seasons there was no reboot this is season 15 not season 3 .
If Ellie doesn't want to do the negative nellies, I will: This season was absolutely atrocious. If Disney seek to continue it, they must know if it is viable at all and what direction it is going in. If the episodes are like boom and 73 yards or like that Beatles episode i forgot the title of, and the arc in general
Sorry Whoculture, but read the majority of comments here and the general feeling of most fandom around the socials. Seems very clear with most saying and feeling the same way. Current Doctor Who is poor and don't seem bothered is there is no series 3 as it's better to have no Doctor Who rather then current RTD regime of badly written Doctor Who, simple, well unless as Eccleston said rightly there all fired and we get a better show runner and writers and lead actor. As for this so called new younger audience, matters not when this audience is a small minority because the older long term fans have given up.
It's bloody ridiculous how much trouble to make just an 8 ep series (which should be more). Also stop calling it season 3 its series 16, the reboot numbering thing is stupid.
@@DrWhoFanJ No it's not we had 12 and 10 eps series in like 2017 and 2020 plus i see other shows get more episodes. Also with how big the budget is now they surely can do aleast 10 eps
The idea that long waits between seasons can damage momentum seems to me a lot like the old TV mindset. We see increasingly more 2+ year gaps on popular streaming shows with little negative impact. Audiences now are inundated with content, along with more ways to engage with fandom (eg: this channel) thus quality over quantity should be the main goal.
I’m not freakin gout because I know the BBC would NEVER let this show be cancelled unless fandom for Doctor Who died down like in 1989. They need a show with sci-fi elements because they pretty much only have crime dramas. Plus, waiting for a renewal happens all the time and a gap year isn’t so bad when every other show does it.
I think they’ve gotta hire some new writers and just sack RTD altogether. He’s had plenty of time and chances to make something good but with the four anniversary episodes along with the rest of the first season on Disney+, he ended up losing a lot of the fan base because he can’t write good stories anymore. We need better writers. And I hope that they get it because the new doctor has some serious potential. He’s doing a great job with what he’s got.
I thought season 1 had a "stakes too high" problem. Too many of the episodes had absurdly high stakes, to the point that you knew they wouldn't result in any long-term consequences. It just sucked all the drama out of the episodes because you knew The Doctor was going to somehow reverse everything, so none of the bad things you were seeing actually mattered. I mean the season finale was a literal copy of Marvel's Infinity War, and I felt the same way at the middle of the finale as I felt at the end of Infinity War: they killed too many key people, this is going to get completely reversed by the end. That too-obvious realization just sapped all the drama out of the rest of the episode for me, because nothing else that happened mattered until the dramatic reversal we all knew was coming at the end. Regarding why Disney Plus might be dragging their feet, I think it's because a fair amount of people watch streaming programming like I do. I hate watching a streaming series one episode a week. So I'll wait until the entire season has dropped before I watch one episode. I think a lot of people consume streaming content like that, which probably throws off the numbers a bit. If the reviews of the episodes aren't great, people who consume streaming like me might decide it's not worth it to pay for Disney plus to watch a lackluster season. I was already paying for D+, so I still watched it. But I imagine there were a fair amount of people who are putting off watching the season until there's something else they also want to watch on D+. Entertainment executives seem to have trouble seeing the "big picture", preferring instant gratification. If the immediate numbers aren't what they expected, they're very likely to get squeamish and want to prematurely pull the plug on something. A lot of great shows have died after a single season because of that.
I don't even like the new Doctor Who at all but to make the first season only 8 episodes long so that some spin-off specials could be made was a bone-headed move. We don't need a "Whoniverse". The BBC made a HUGE mistake bringing RTD back. Fans fighting with each other? No confirmation of contract renewal? No confirmation of a 3rd season? A possible "gap year"? If it were anyone else in charge we wouldn't be going through any of this garbage. This channel even seems like a Doctor Who propaganda show. I'm sure the fans who stuck around must be pretty ticked off about all this. I would be.
After losing Top Gear, the BBC Studios earnings report proved how valuable Doctor Who is & at the very least we might only get specials like S4 (For Easter, Halloween/Thanksgiving, Xmas/New Year) but that's the least with Ncuti or without Ncuti & With Disney or without
@@frolicchris I think that a fair comment but I also believe he whether intentionally or not has caused the opposite to happen. I believe we need to go back to where the show had a head writer and a separate showrunner. It is too much for one person to pull of effectively. I stand by my point though that he has lied to the audience of DW on more than one occasion and that is very poor practise. I hope you enjoy your day.
Ellie wants us all to be nice to people who have different opinions than we do? But this is the Internet! People who disagree with us on the Internet are evil. Otherwise, they would agree with us, right? However, I know Ellie isn't evil because I agree with her. The Internet would be a much nicer place if everyone was nice. Yay, since I agree with Ellie, that means I'm not evil either. This was an awesome video!!! Thank you, Ellie.
I think they are good at keeping stuff top secret so hopefully we will hear next year. Before you said about if the BBC took sole charge, I was thinking the same and the Quarry scenes are legendary.
It may even mean that RTD has to write good plots again… I’d be more than fine with that.
Blink!! Whenever i draw in friends, it is with BLINK! 😅🥰😍
I'd rather have a diamond in the rough than a gilded turd.
True, but if it did return to a bbc budget, that doesn't mean it would return to 2007 it would be more like Jodie's era.
To be honest I would look forward to the show being made with bbc budgets again
Or same budget, but twice as many episodes. Am rewatching older seasons with GF. More than once a puddle of water or water flowing in the street is an ominous omen. They don't need a huge budget. They need better writing and deeper characters.
It's a real curse of modern "prestige" television. I don't miss the bottle episodes, filler episodes and clip shows of old 23 episode TV seasons, but there is a greater balance to be found between 23 and 8.
Me Too
Especially if it means getting away from this 8 episode nonsense.
@@worland102688 absolutely
Absolutely and hopefully most of the politics going on would go away.
Yes! Bring back filming in quarries, doubling as alien planets. The BBC could even film a remake of Blake's 7 at the same time.😊
BRING BACK THE QUARRIES.
My favourite Doctor Who is low-budget, claustrophobic, monster-of-the-week stories.
A good idea, a good story, well written script, good acting, special effects aren't that important to me.
Wasn't "Boom" (my absolute favourite of the past season) filmed in a quarry?😁
While I agree with your general idea, it doesn't always have to be a quarry, I don't recall many quarry-filmed episodes in the Moffat era, yet it's the era I enjoy rewatching most, especially Matt Smith's run.
It is not even if you try with VPN iPlayer flips you off like crazy 😂
It’s not because of the bbc license fee that has to be paid and it region locked if they made it a paid service outside of the United Kingdom then it would be like us helping fun the doctor more then just through what merchandise we are allowed get in America cause iplayer got it all consulted onto iplayer last November here in America it broke up onto 3 services Britbox for the classic era if they still have it max for seasons 1-13 of the modern era and the new content on Disney+ also Tubi has the classic era for now and the whoiverse thing is a uk exclusive thing cause we not none of the other new content that was released so far
The Uk doesn’t want the BBC to have it
@ugolomb that too.
@@nikkicat254 My main issues with RTD2 especially when compared to RTD1:
1) In RTD1 things were explained.
Flood is' " etc. in RTD2
3) RTD1 being progressive naturally to a point where I didn't even realize it until the Master pointed out that the Doctor's team ticks all demographic boxes, vs. in RTD2 being so forceful with it.

Those things concern me, too. Also, it's not only sets and CGI that cost money. People do, too, including actors, writers, and staff.
It’s always David Tennant isn’t it? Tennant this Tennant that, add some Smith and layer it with Tennant.

The return of david tennant was phenomenal until they treated him like crap for not being a woman still… THAT PISSED ME OFF
But life goes on, doesn't it?

I agree with you Ellie the BBC can just cracking on without Disney
I’m 100% sure RTD watches whoculture and makes announcements right after you upload 😂
Let's bring back Quarks in quarries... that would be quality!
Oh, i’m with you. I love a good Doctor Who quarry episode.
I really wouldn't be mad either if the BBC's 8 actors, 3 quarries, 2 umbrellas and one tunnel returned.
Regardless of what people felt about the chibnall/Whitaker era, visually speaking it looked awesome. That was on a BBC only budget. So they can definitely go it alone
If he's the future of the franchise...let it die.
2:32 That's not a promise; that's a plan. He specifically used the word "plan".

Now is the WHO fan???
It's interesting to think that 2025 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Doctor Who revival. (In classic Who terms, that's when we got "The Five Doctors"!) If Disney does decide not to renew the agreement and DW goes back to the BBC and Bad Wolf, the revival's 20th anniversary strikes me as a good year to bring it back to its roots. And if, God forbid, DW does get canceled or go on indefinite hiatus, a 20-year run for a revival series ain't bad!

That's a funny stance considering the viewing numbers for the show are the lowest ever since pre 2005. This is not really debatable...just look it up.
@mvprindle
That's because most younger WHO fans don't watch live, they binge 'reruns' on streaming.
Their business model relies on them bringing in new customers and older shows don't do that, thus why shows tend to last 3-4 seasons at the most...
quarries are fine, schools and warehouses are fine, more Doctor Who please.

A 5 year old isn't likely going to really care about things like that. A 12 year old is old enough to understand sex.

Based on what we've seen recently "working on season 3" likely means drunkenly scribbling idiocy in the pub.
Good work Ellie and team. Especially the out, which was spot on.
No, you're wrong about these "Negative Nellies" - they are true fans who know what they are talking about
If it was BBC going it solo, then we would have quicker decisions.
“Cheap” Doctor Who was great so long as it’s well written.
Let's call those people for what they are BIGOTS. Daleks in Human disguise.
And vice versa...

Personally, I think Dr Who should give Disney the boot. Disney destroys creativity in favor of boring lowest common denominator story telling.

Christopher Eccleston, is that you? 😋
That you mr Heitch?
Who's we? people who voted for Brexit?
There's no "back" to come to. We're still watching and loving it.
Can we un-Disney+ Doctor Who?
Asking for a friend
They only own streaming rights lol
Said no-one with a brain ever.
@@peterd788 You don’t know any of that because none of it is true. Only true statements can be known.
they could course correct, the toy maker made a significant comment to the doctor which could easilly undo the entire timeless child disaster, in the episode The Giggle the toymaker smuggly says to the doctor "Do you like what I have done to your past?"
This could easilly be used to revert all the crap that no one likes, and to be honest was more then likely put there just incase they needed to do just that, but RTD had dug himself a hole and cant come out of it without shame, so he is trying to dig a tunnel to the other side now, it will take a new showrunner who spotted this loophole to fix this
@@DoctorTimelord They can't course correct because they didn't wait for the reaction to a truly terrible season before shooting the next.

BBC should team with RTe, PBS , AbC and CBC. Maybe even NHK
No, that is not the feeling.
Wrong, but whatever makes you feel better
HBO Max? The NuWho run was on Scifi Channel, BBC America and is now available on Max. So Doctor Who will be fine on its own.
It's bloody ridiculous how much trouble to make just an 8 ep series (which should be more). Also stop calling it season 3 its series 16, the reboot numbering thing is stupid.
That’s how television works for over a decade now.
How often are yall gonna make this exact video?
…never?
Said no-one with a brain ever.
The doctor who social media pages say 2025 for "The War between the land and the sea"
What, me quarry?
I would be.
Literally nothing you’ve said here is even remotely truthful and you know it. Cope harder.

He wants to remain enthusiastic to keep momentum going for Who. It's his job.
@@frolicchris I think that a fair comment but I also believe he whether intentionally or not has caused the opposite to happen. I believe we need to go back to where the show had a head writer and a separate showrunner. It is too much for one person to pull of effectively. CGI has its place, but I fell in love with the doctor during it's most campy phase (second doctor, 1960's). It's the story, not the backgrounds.
Technically this is actually going to be Season 41 if you count the revival as a continuation of the classic series.
