They raided the treasury of Xiao Jian, who was an ally of Lu Bu at the time. After failing to convince Zang Ba to give it all back, Lu Bu declare war against him, despite the warnings of Chen Gong and others. Zang Ba was not an easy target to fight. 1: He was no stranger to fighting against bigger numbers (from rescuing his father from a 100+ prison escort with only 20-30 men to his experiences during the Yellow Turban Rebellion) and 2: He had home field advantage as the fighting took place on Mount Tai, where Zang Ba had his home base and where he staged all of his attacks. He fended of Lu Bu and was actually beating him. But before he could get a decisive victory, Yuan Shu made his power play for Xu. Cao Cao caught him and instead of executing him, made him a vassal ruler of Xu providence and his men local administrators.

Excellent summation and overview of characters and happenings within the stories. Great for noobs like me who are a little intimidated with how vast the story is. Thank you!!! New sub here!
There are many important details that need to be left out to make this video as compact as possible, but I wouldn't mind watching longer version of this. But here: Sun Jian was accused of hiding the Heirloom Seal by various warlords in the coalition, he lied 3 times (he swore that he will die miserably if he lies) and escaped with it, so he kinda did. The second lie were paid by his (spoiler), son, and the final one, by his son's sworn brother. A version in the Romance said that when Liu Bei was sent to engage Yuan Shu, it was Chen Gong who advised Lu Bu to take over Xuzhou. Lu Bu hesitated at first, but he was reminded that he was more of brawns instead of brains and it was a situation like this that caused him to be a wandering vagabond despite his talents and good looks. He is a bit offended, but he agreed anyway. When Lu Bu was captured, he was unsettled and very uncomfortable in bounds. Zhang Liao yelled at his Lord to "man up" - this impresses the big shots. Then Lu Bu plead for mercy and exchange his life for his service. Cao Cao was initially swayed, but Liu Bei reminded him that he has killed his last 2 fathers, then Cao Cao ordered his execution. Lu Bu was incensed and accuse Liu Bei of being ungrateful after what he did for him (Lu Bu still welcomed him back after conquering Xuzhou and the Yuan Shu archery affair). He cussed at both Liu Bei and Cao Cao all the way to his execution spot. Zhang Liao waiting outside the court witnessed the whining general, when they met, he yelled at his former lord again "die like a man, and STFU!" Zhang Liao has no hesitation when he is about executed, "just get it over with" - it was Guan Yu whose bromance sense was woken up at this sassy display of manhood, he pleaded for Zhang Liao's mercy, "he is a brave general, staying with his lord until the last end, he will prove to be loyal and dependable". This (SPOILER again) will greatly influenced Guan Yu's decision to spare Cao Cao in Huarong pass after the conclusion of the battle of Red Cliff, who was accompanied and escorted by battered and beaten Zhang Liao, his old mate at the time.
can u elaborate more on the part on how Zhang Xiu defeated Cao Cao? All i know was its Jia Xu is involved but i dont know the details. And what happened to them in the end?

Lu bu was just a beast. Just what would have happened if Cao cao would have successfully captured him and made him into an subordinate who is loyal to him…
Is this even in doubt? Lu Bu never saw a back he didn't think would be improved with a knife sticking out. It'd only be a matter of time before he betrayed Cao Cao too.
No difference. He was strong but he was just one person. The ambush by Li Jue and Guo Si were enough to send him running. Cao Cao really had no shortage of talent as he was the most legitimate and richest.

The hypocrisy of Liu Bei was most vividly reflected in this period. Ambitious but always trying to set himself up as a moral model, so always be swayed by considerations of gain and loss, that is Liu Bei.
Yes he's ambitious.. even from the very young age But i think he is not trying to be a moral model. He is a man who just want to live up to the ideal standard of his era, while pursuing his ambition. Maybe not a great leader like Caocao, but i think he was definitely a good man.. When in office he govern his people well and won their heart. @@syv5013 His benevolence just political act. Because he have Imperial Bloodlines." I don't see the logical relation here. You need proof to prove that his benevolence is just political act. Let's say his benevolence is just political act. He didnt conduct a single massacre. On the other hand, Cao Cao and his generals conduct multiple times of massacre. Even if Liu Bei "not conducting massacres" is a political act, from moral perspective, he is still better than Cao Cao. "Liu Bei dont have Military skill but have Propaganda Principle & Imperial Bloodline that attract some great talented officers. " First, Liu Bei actually get to promote during Yellow Turban Rebellion. So it is absurd to say that he don't have military skill. Also, Liu Bei is famous for his ambition and bravery. "On the other hand, Cao Cao is not having Imperial Bloodline but have many great talented officer too. Because Cao Cao dont care about family figure background, anyone have skill Cao Cao reward it. That also attract many great person that dont have good family background." If you do study the history of three kingdoms, you would see that although Cao cao stand for "Meritocracy" (唯才是舉), his officers were composed mainly of members of big family (世家大族). Not a lot of officers were actually come from nowhere (單家/ 寒門). If you are interested in the history of three kingdoms, read some books before rushing to the conclusion.
Yuan Shu isn't only a deluded warlord, but also one incompetent bastard of a leader. His rebellion was thoroughly unprepared that he forcefully conscript farmers and left his territory bereft of labours. Without farmers to toil the land, coupled with a bad drought and flooding; famine was unavoidable and throughout the campaign against Yuan Shu, many warlords had witnessed how the people of Yang province resorted to cannibalism on each other. His end would be him running away from the warlord and died of thirst on some unknown swamp as the romance told of it.
Dynasty warriors movie comin up on Netflix . It’s lubu!! Why does cao cao like married and widowed chics? It’s kinda weird. Never heard of the one about the farmer cooking his wife. Basically turns a used car 🚗 salesman into Hannibal lechter
there's a theory. women married young back then, like 14 years old young. especially in times of war, all women were pretty much married by the time they were 16. so when they say he likes married women, its possible that he just likes 20 year olds(almost all of whom would have been married), instead of 16 year olds. He's just not afraid of taking other people's wives like other people would be.
Liu Bei: Help me! Cao Cao! Lu Bu wants me dead! Cao Cao: This hypocrite wants my help... Fine... Lu Bu the meat head with a heaven horse... Must die! Then after I will reap the rewards and territory! Guan Yu: I want the heaven horse after this!

Not the one who really care with Han dynasty. He also an ambitious ruler.

So if Liu Bei was lucky Lu Bu will go ahead and get himself killed trying to get away from Cao Cao's clutch, If not then He has to fight Lu Bu who carries out Cao Cao's order.
And so boo hoo, Lu Bu, was executed.
@@ThanoosUdom If Liu Bei pled for Lu Bu to be spared to serve Cao Cao, I imagine he'd be met with "Since you have pled his case, let him serve you." Because as Liu Bei pointed out, everyone Lu Bu serves under...

These are so brilliant! I decided I was going to jump in the pool and finally read The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and I am glad I stumbled upon these videos. Excellent summation and overview of characters and happenings within the stories. Great for noobs like me who are a little intimidated with how vast the story is. Thank you!!! New sub here!
There are many important details that need to be left out to make this video as compact as possible, but I wouldn't mind watching longer version of this. But here:
Sun Jian was accused of hiding the Heirloom Seal by various warlords in the coalition, he lied 3 times (he swore that he will die miserably if he lies) and escaped with it, so he kinda did.
Zhang Liao waiting outside the court witnessed the whining general, when they met, he yelled at his former lord again "die like a man, and STFU!"
Zhang Liao has no hesitation when he is about executed, "just get it over with" - it was Guan Yu whose bromance sense was woken up at this sassy display of manhood, he pleaded for Zhang Liao's mercy, "he is a brave general, staying with his lord until the last end, he will prove to be loyal and dependable".
The lesson I learnt was, if you want to do something kill Lu Bu first.
But even then must you never pursue him

Cool History Bros, can you please make a video on a Buddhist monk named Faxian, as well as another video on a Buddhist monk named Yijing. You already made a video on Xuanzang.

10:16 It really says something when not even Lu Bu has such a counter.
Well the counter is the number of times Liu Bei went against his principles. I'm not sure Lu Bu had any he could go against. :P
@@DAv2003 True.

@@jasonblalock4429 I know, but what if…
No difference. He was strong but he was just one person. The ambush by Li Jue and Guo Si were enough to send him running. Cao Cao really had no shortage of talent as he was the most legitimate and richest.
Zhang Liao is already a version of "Loyal Lu Bu" plus Cao Cao have many great officer.

I think the hunter was just looking for a reason to get rid of his nagging wife.
13:01 to put family's interests behind a guest's. this mindset is still going strong among many culturally fundamental Chinese. One friend of mine got divorced by his wife a few years ago for upholding this principle. For example, my friend and his wife already arranged a quality time at a weekend for some time, only to be cancelled at the last moment when a relative or stranger decided to visit their home. And this kind of events happened for years until the wife couldn't take it anymore.
Lu Bu treated his horse better than his men. Valued advise from his woman more than his advisor. Dont do those things.
The hypocrisy of Liu Bei was most vividly reflected in this period. Ambitious but always trying to set himself up as a moral model, so always be swayed by considerations of gain and loss, that is Liu Bei.
Disagree. He is a ambitious warlord but he is also one of the most benevolent one by that time.
Yes he's ambitious.. even from the very young age
But i think he is not trying to be a moral model. He is a man who just want to live up to the ideal standard of his era, while pursuing his ambition. Maybe not a great leader like Caocao, but i think he was definitely a good man.. When in office he govern his people well and won their heart. Many great general and good official sided to him is also a merit...
Liu Bei's kindness is generally acknowledged for thousand years. And those "historian" didn't even read a book said that was hypocrisy .
@@qq6531 His benevolence just political act.
Because he have Imperial Bloodlines.
Liu Bei dont have Military skill but have Propaganda Principle & Imperial Bloodline that attract some great talented officers.
On the other hand, Cao Cao is not havinv Imperial Bloodline but have many great talented officer too. Because Cao Cao dont care about family figure background, anyone have skill Cao Cao reward it. That also attract many great person that dont have good family background.
@@syv5013 His benevolence just political act. Because he have Imperial Bloodlines."
I don't see the logical relation here.
First, Liu Bei actually get to promote during Yellow Turban Rebellion. So it is absurd to say that he don't have military skill. Also, Liu Bei is famous for his ambition and bravery. Again, you need more proof to prove that "Propaganda Principle & Imperial Bloodline that attract some great talented officers" instead of just saying it.
"On the other hand, Cao Cao is not having Imperial Bloodline but have many great talented officer too. Because Cao Cao dont care about family figure background, anyone have skill Cao Cao reward it. That also attract many great person that dont have good family background."
If you do study the history of three kingdoms, you would see that although Cao cao stand for "Meritocracy" (唯才是舉), his officers were composed mainly of members of big family (世家大族).
Seeing Zhang Fei so dark keeps making me mistaken him as Zhou Cang XD
Love your content bro
Lu Bu is like a Musclebound Troll who keeps Ruining Everyone's Plans.
I am really enjoying these episodes, thanks!
Red Hare: *neighs*
The irony that Liu Bei should’ve let Cao Cao spare and use Lu Bu. Also convince him to execute Zhang Liao (however unlikely). It would’ve been better for him and Shu-Han
If Zhang Liao died…
No Battle of Hefei and Sun Quan doesn’t lose big time
Maybe, Lu Bu is The China's Legendary Achilles.
Oh boy the historical version is going to be a hour long video to get through especially with the other characters that were involved, like shi xie, zhang lu, and liu Chong

Hi, I enjoyed your video. I'm sure you majored in East Asian history. am I right? your videos deal with Chinese history, Japanese history, and Korean history. you are well aware of those fields.
I read on scholar of Shen Zhou's forum (kongming.net), the historical Lu Bu actually also an excellent commander who usually win with a much smaller forces. That's why Cao Cao focus on Lu Bu first (following Guo Jia's advise). After that, Liu Bei. After he rebelled and take Xu Zhou. Although Liu Bei have 50,000 troops (he execute the former commander, Che Zhou), the loyalty of the troops weren't establish enough. If Cao Cao don't take Liu Bei ASAP, he will give difficulties. According to history, Liu Bei is also an excellent commander. The Bowang Slope's ambush is originally his doing, not Zhuge Liang. He is no better different than Cao Cao too. Not the one who really care with Han dynasty. He also an ambitious ruler.
So good!
Lu bu still confused me on something what exactly was his objective because he serve many Lords and he wasn’t doing any advantages in gain territory
Wtffff, I can see why they would remove the cannibalism part from my old children version of the three kingdoms

Romance of the Three Kingdom era full of Karma.
• Liu Bei take his relative Liu Zhang's land & exiled him after he surrendered...in the future his son, Liu Shan, surrendered to Wei.
• Cao Cao kidnapped & puppetted the Emperor.
Cao Pi usurped the Emperor & forced him to abdicate.
In the future, his descendant will be puppetted & force to abdicate by Sima Clan.
• Title of Emperor is sacred. And someone who want to be Emperor must unite all China first. But Cao Pi, Liu Bei, Sun Quan are greedy & too quick to proclaim to be the Emperor without uniting the China first. Then, their Empire regime just short. Not even survive in 100 years.
Only the Sima Clan managed to unify all of China.
For like a decade before they started killing each other, which is an even worse track record.
