Field trips to specialised workshops a most welcome addition.
Loved the brief engineering tangent, Nat. A few weeks back you mentioned calculating forces going through - I think - part of a bodyshell. I would be interested to hear more about this; we learn this stuff in uni but only in very simple shapes and never in a real-world application. Current engineering student here, and I'm keen to see some of what I've learned applied in an automotive setting. Not exactly the focus of this channel, but I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to hear more on the engineering side.
P.S. Watched further, and the engineering calculations you speak of later are exactly what I'm referring to!
Really interesting discussion about propshaft design limitations. Thanks Nat
A spin-off series of Nat visiting workshops and covering processes of manufacturing in great detail would be excellent!
Propshaft whip and possible failure may cause you to spill your tea.....
Spilt tea??? imagine if it was a delicious Roundstone coffee!!! Now THAT would be a disaster!
As always, great video! I appreciated the Prop Shaft Engineering 101 course segment.
Design for convenient subsequent convenient maintenance?
What a concept. Too bad more big product manufacturers don't seem to have heard of it. :-)*
Newspaper fuel tanks have a precedent - the P51 Mustang used "doped" paper drop tanks to get to Berlin and back.
Nat, I agree. Time lapse does bring a great deal to a channel about craft. Would enjoy seeing more here.
I ONLY HAD A COMMENT READ OUT!!!! Deep joy. Lordy, that Jensen is looking amazing. It's going to be a real gem when it hits the roads. Many more Nat tangents, please. Will be following the new Simitar chassis shenanigans with great interest.
The Escort on the rolling road is terrifying. Was praying those straps held😂. That tyre damage is mad.
I am going to miss that Camaro when it goes .Always preferred the Mustangs looks but You have changed my mind with the stunner you have built. Just an Idea but how about selling posters of your projects in your shop.I suppose I could screen shoot an image from the computer put it on a stick and get the local print shop to knock some copies off, but it would leave a bad taste in my mouth, as I would feel like I have ripped you off every time I look at it. Think what I am really trying to say is that I can't see the owners objecting as they have been plastered all over our screens for so long.
Sunday night complete ☕️ in hand best hour on Sunday night !
Big fan from the States in Central Florida. Always GREAT video content. Looking forward to the addition of the time lapse also. I think it's cool that your guys go grab Jamie(who is excellent)when it's something worthy of jumping out and videoing the process. Especially considering some body/mechanics don't like to participate. Some don't like it because they have to turn the music off..etc. I look forward to every Sunday and thank you for investing the time for us to see!
Love the videos - sponsored by Roundstone coffee, Cal is in there making a "delicious" cup of Roundstone coffee, Nat opens drawing attention to his mug of tea.
Can't wait for Churchill to be finished.
I love lots of WAFFLE and TANGENTS from Nat
Yeah not so much
Will you be able to use the original Scimitar's identity?. You will have a different design of chassis, heavily modified body, different interior. It will effectively be a new silhouette Scimitar
You got out of balance describing whipping, and spilt the coffee😂
Love a good tangent👍
It’s all very well saying put 3 coats on but these experts obviously don’t know about SOLVENT BOIL.
Hey Nat, did you manage to drink any of that tea? Looked like most of it was going on the floor. 🤣
Is Jamie employed specifically for marketing/media or does he do other things? (Perhaps someone filming Jamie filming?)
That mock up drawing of the Allagro in Limeflower is marvellous.
The Escort on the Dino sounds so good right the way through the Rev range congratulations.
Nat and crew, your content has been FAB from the beginning and we are with you on the journey. The work you do explain is unique and appreciative so just crack on the way you are👍🏻
I’m going to love watching these Allegros thrashing the Jags and Mustangs racing around Goodwood ha ha!
My Sunday is now complete.. Love my Retro Power Sundays.. Thanks guys..
Didn't realise Retro Power was so short of teaspoons. I'm sure Stu could knock you one up with the RP logo on it in a matter of minutes.
Great content, think you might need another cuppa as most of it is on the garage floor 😂
Regarding time lapse with GOPRO,i use an external battery and can run the camera for as long as i like until the SD card is full.
Yup. GoPro is IDEAL for Timelapse, it's a built in mode going back to when they first released a camera. A basic single 18650 cell USB battery backup will keep it running for several hours. A cheap external battery bank for a mobile phone will run a gopro for a day or more.
38:44 The Escort has the same power as the RS2000 original...
At 3250rpm 😁
1.5 times more at full whack 👌
Nat great detail thanks, Is it true Mark was an underwear model for Marks and Spencer ?
🤣🤣
just wondering how many orders have went in for two piece escort propshafts !!!
thoroughly enjoyed the info on this episode and escort sounds amazing
24:09 Jamie,
Ditch the GoPro and grab a DJI Action 3 or 4.
They have great battery life, a separate us c charge door that can be open to a power source while filming and a clever 3x battery charger/holder that doubles as a power bank.
Vision on par with the Gopro
Great work as usual!
I hope you will address the boot lid fitment on the MK1 though, it appears to be sitting too high. (From the side profile).
Looks fantastic though!
It's not latched on the dyno
@@retropowercars ah, I see! Fantastic job you guy's do there, being in bodywork for nearly fifty years & now retired, it's like a drug watching your great video's every week!
Thanks for all the effort and cost you put into bringing these videos out each week. It makes my Monday evening.
Awesome as usual, I should probably send you my Netflix subscription😂
As regards time lapse video when painting colour ….NOOOOOOOOOOOOO😮 Slow and mellow please just like the Etype
Great piece on the TVR chassis. Would be great if you can do a walk around with Ian at Sportmotive. I understand he has just invested in a new chassis jig.
I am totally hooked on your site/videos having followed since the Gordon Murray Escort project. I've a request tho, the audio volumn seems to be lacking these past couple of months. Admittedly my hearing is compromised however I've got the volumn on my MacPro max'd and still, it is quite difficult for me to hear your voices. Can you have a look at that and see if there are opportunities to improve the audio? Regards, FredL, So Cal, USA.
Will take a look
I'm sure everyone has mentioned this, but what's up with the boot lid fit on Project One? Scimitar chassis as TVR type is going to be brilliant, the Scim I had was uber flexy.
Does the Camaro have any connection with the North East of Scotland ? The registration number originally comes from Aberdeenshire.
The shots ofthe Escort on the rolling road seem to show some sort ofrear wheel "wobble" at times.
Was that part of the tyre issue, an optical illusion due to video technology, my imagination or something else?
I think if I was spending several hundred thousand GBP on a prototype car the like of which Retropower do a fantastic job of building, I might get a little pissed if it kept being reffered to as a "toy" car!
Not being a complete expert on paint spraying the issue can be too much paint thickness. I know on ships where we spend 500K a pop coating the max thickness is around 220microns to prevent the paint cracking under flexing of the metal.
We'll know when the weather has ACTUALLY warmed up when we get more footage of that one bloke strutting around in his denim cut-off short shorts!
When planning a build is the final kerbweight in your calculations and do you monitor the weight added as you progress? Great videos, thankyou.
Might be a stupid question to most of you guy's, I take it that it is a new engine in the Ford. I always believed mainly because I am more of a bike man, that there should be some run in period. How come the Ford can be thrashed on the Dyno
Great episode as usual and project one sounds fantastic. Also a shout out to Jamie who does a brilliant job.Agreeing with Nat and a camera showing up when you botched something is typical haha but there must be some footage of sparks burning fingers as i see very few gloves in use so maybe some out takes with dubbed f bombs are on the cutting room floor.
The rear looks like it's drifted off the rollers @ 38:15 and the centre of the tyre is on the rollers edge, hence it destroyed itself... Sounds so Awesome... Seagul Grey ? Eeeewww ;p
If you made it front wheel drive then you won’t need a prop shaft
Sorry to hear that the Audi project has been paused. Hopefully we see it continue in the future.
Looking at the escort on the rolling Road, and noticed the original style door handles, so I'm thinking this vehicle won't be going through the IVA test? 😮
Talking of jensons. What has happened to the CV8. I haven’t seen it for a long time.
No updates on the website either. Maybe the owner realised that they'd basically wiped off 100% of it's value by replacing 90% of it with non-Jensen parts? The choice of an LS instead of a HellCrate showed that they were not the right people to be working on it, even before they started destroying the original body for carbon fibre molds.
Microphone on the last couple episodes are just a bit too quiet
Will address. Thanks
Will the Allegros be registered as Allegros or Hondas?
How do you get them through an IVA test?
Will they have Q plates?
When will we get to see a behind the scenes/making of/fails video? That could be quite hilarious!
Wow that car looks beautiful 💯🔥🔥🔥you can't beat the older Ford cars it sounds really nice as well 👍🏻
On the escort the boot lid lock is chrome. Not black like the handles or copper color like the other accents. I assume to not draw attention. Couldn't this have been anodized or something in body color?
Nat should get the mic out of his navel and nearer his speaking hole so we can hear what he says. Volume level is a bit too low.Otherwise, cracking stuff as ever.
38:10 - looks like the LH rear tyre is on the edge of the roller, or is that just lighting? Wondering why the Cooper tyre wore in such an seemingly odd way?
Do those new carbon fiber prop shafts allow you to go longer for a given diameter/length?
To a point, yes, because they're lighter for the same strength, and a lot less flexible. But, once you go past it's tolerance the failure is a lot quicker and a lot more violent. Plenty of cases to be seen on US Drag n Drive videos or Carbon prop shafts failing in a mode that external to the car visually resembles an explosion of Carbon dust.
FFS, keep the wooden tank. It's green and sustainable.😂
Funny you should say about newspaper fuel tanks much stronger material than anything that comes out of bl factory
Soft\competition tyres don't have a good time on the dyno. Our customers were usually advised to fit road tyres for long mapping sessions
Yes, it was my error, I should have known better
All those projects are beautiful!
In regards to the issues with the tailgate on the Interceptor, would it be possible to use electric tailgate struts which would minimise the loads during opening and closing, thus negating any distortion of the frame .
That Camaro is stunning. Lucky owner.
I’m in heaven when I watch your videos, they are so clear and concise. 🔧🔧🔧🔧
Curious, how much power did the Escort put down at the wheels?
Love the 'Mopshaft' 😂😀
Ahh the Range Rover at the end. Also known as the Money Vortex of Doom.
Escort wheel distorting a lot at 38 minutes
Electric hand brakes should be banned
Now that was a massive leek ! 😄
Seem to remember that we called it a whirling moment with shafts, when I was at college.
I wasn't expecting god to make an appearence 🤣
Just love that Escort! One of the best cars I have watched! Not that I do not appreciate Al the others! Time-lapse is easy on a Go Pro, but yes, you need an external battery. Anker make some awesome products you can use that last for quite a while. I use an A1336
All the Brainiacs whinging about the boot lid fitment ..please note...It wasn't Closed!!!!
Project One power "curve" pretty much still a straight line at 9000rpm - seems to me you need a GMA T50 red line revision to 12100rpm! 😅 What could possibly go wrong??? 😛
_Camaro_ ~ Buddy Repperton eat ya heart out!
Can we have a look at nats ranger rover classic
I hope the gaps on the escort boot lid aren't staying like that or i'm unsubscribing.
It's not latched on the dyno
If you are basically building a TVR Scimitar ,why didn't you just scan a Reliant Scimitar and build a car from scratch? And save a very original example for a restorer?
What’s happening with the Class 7 Mini Pickup? I assume it will be for the 2025 season now? Would love some coverage of it on the channel. Phil Cooper is running an LS Mini now and it looks amazing!
The exhaust system on the Interceptor looks like it was laid out by a graphic designer and not a fluid dynamics engineer. That long balance pipe will be useless. Now that you've swapped in the IRS, the exhaust should have been given a proper X-Pipe layout to maximise exhaust scavenging and increase crossectional area for the exhaust pulses as the gasses cool, allowing each pulse to expand further as they slow down, rather then the usual choke effect. It's very odd that a workshop with such high fit and finish standards and excelent engineering, fails on some of the simple and obvious best choices.
It's like the destruction of the C-V8 from valuable classic to Carbon Copy replica with the junk motor, great quality workmanship, that should never have been done.
Brilliant video, fascinating engineering, superb motors. Thanks.
DON'T FORGET the "review" of each vehicle before handover so we can marvel at your handiwork !
Meant to ask before - the jensen's tailgate hinges' pivot axis ARE exactly in line, aren't they?
Any deviation WILL cause either the bodyshell, the hatch, or both, to distort through the opening and losing swing.
Surely your Jenson broom handle is a torque tube replacement 😂
Maybe for an LS powered car, but not enough for a MoPar Heart. 😂
Prop shafts come under Critical Whirling speed criteria, see :- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_speed
So, regarding the prop shaft.
What happens if the owner decides to go for more power? Which they probably will in time. .
Couldn't you have went for a Carbon Fibre prop?
Or do you password lock the ECM so people can't mess with the tune?
People have been watching too many Just-rolled-in videos ..... where an attempt to make a fuel tank out of 3mm ply-wood would not be a surprise. Of course you have to install your mop-handle propshaft with builders foam.
I wondered about the balance pipe on the exhaust , i have found them basically useless unless they are within 120mm to 150 mm of both pipes .
Love the 'Mop Prop'. Any idea how much torque it will withstand???? Rude not to ask..
Project One sounds sweet!
Good point on propshafts, also pinion angle is quite crucial, a lot of the high power, high revving cars in drag racing use carbon fibre one piece propshafts, Steve Morris's wagon for example has 4500 bhp at the wheels and runs a 1 piece carbon fibre prop, the main reason for using carbon fibre is that if it fails it basically turns to dust and does not destroy everything.
Thank you Nat for your prop shaft tangent, I used to have the mickey taken out of me for running a two piece shaft when I was rallying an Escort. I’ll have to share this video with all those guys. Thanks from down under in New Zealand for all the great videos sharing what’s going on in your workshop, just mind blowing the product you and your team continually turn out.
Strewth had to go back and look at the “old” Ford BDG pulled 9000 rpms. Sounded epic.
Fantastic episode! Thoroughly interesting with some funny moments, loved the very end! lol
Just curious, but will there be any heat shielding between a 400 degree C calliper and the dinosaur juice holder, wooden or otherwise ?
Really interesting explanation on the prop shaft dynamics ...thanks...
Does the escort have ppf to protect that lovely paintwork? Also how long does it take on average to do a full restoration?
Cheers-Steve
I would love to see how you can calculate a custom a Pilar made from an allegro carbon copy and the inside put together from the chassis and the hull cobeled together…
