Aloha, I'm fourth generation Japanese living in Hawaii. I was sumotori size for all of my life until the world shutdown in 2020, with lots of medical issues at the age of 54 at 184.159 kg or 406 lbs living a very non-active life. During shutdown, I started eating traditional Japanese, Okinawan and Hawaiian foods from 400 years ago and my body changed. I focused on oysters, natto, kunbo, fish, ikura, pork, kimchee, sesame seed oil, coconut oil, macadamia nuts and lots of Hawaiian salt and my weight dropped, medical issues are gone, all of this change without western medical intervention. I have done three Honolulu Marathons, my loose skin is almost gone along with my white hair. I share my knowledge with my remaining third generation family saying Japan food technology from the past was far more advanced that any culture on the planet back then. I wish my family never left our food culture as I have learned that I'm not good with other people's foods as my body was inflamed since childhood and our family members died from cancer and diabetes complication. I now wear the same size pants as I wore when I was 8 years old with muscles everywhere!!! @@smonster Thank you, I tried that and without mass amount of salt I get headaches no energy and very nauseous. Also, without the meat, I tried that for a while and my muscle shrank. The number one thing that I need to do in my old age is maintaining muscle mass. People who lose their muscles end up falling and have to do hip replacement or neck injuries. In the US 50% of the people who end up with this type of energy die within a year or so after.
Japanese food of the past is not the best in the world! It is the best for people of your genetics. Every country has its own cultural diet rooted in the past. It is to that that every population must look to stay healthy. We too have many centenarians, but if I ate like you I would get sick, because my people traditionally eat differently from yours.
@@masterep3576That just means you are not getting enough protein for your body weight. You need 1gram of protein per 1kg of body weight…. so if you weigh 54kg you need 54grams of protein a day.
if you don’t eat meat you have to replace it with something else like beans or lentils.
most people who get hip fractures at old age when they fell is due to low bone density if they are at a lower weight. one way to prevent this is by jumping 50 times on each leg or exercising with a weighted fast to increase bone density, that’s why most overweight people barely have any bone fractures.
most people on the US are on a bad diet, like 90+ percent of them. They eat processed junk and lots of animal derived foods. I don’t think you should compare to them if your diet is already mostly whole foods and plant based.
if you feel like you don’t get enough salt than there might be other things wrong; not a balanced diet or not enough iodine; iodine is added to table salt since many people take that, but it is not a good source of getting it. you can take two nori sheets a day for iodine.
nutritional yeast also helps to get adequate sodium since it is well balanced with potassium; most people in the US are deficient of potassium.

The bacteria 🧫 are butyrate-producing bacteria: bifidobacteria & lactic acid bacteria, specifically from fermented soybeans or Natto. The enzyme is called Nattokinase

I live in another blue zone in Italy and many people here tend their own gardens and eat produce that thty grow themselves well into their 80's and 90's. They are out there all summer every day in the heat doing agricultural work, its incredible. These nonni know how to do evetything from scratch. They make and can their own sauce, they make their own olive oil from their own olives, they make their own wine, bread, pasta, liquors, with real yeast. They also do eat lots of small whole fish like sardines and anchiovies. There is definitely a corelation. Italy has the second oldest population on the planet after Japan.
My research about 10 years ago was on Bifidobacteria adolescentis being the main type of bifido found in centenarians.

I've read about the health benefits of eating natto. I live in Seattle and found that natto either is hard to find or that it's quite expensive. I started taking Nattokinase 2,000 FU's a day that I found on Amazon.

Humans cannot digest fiber at all. We have no cecum or hind gut with the bacteria to ferment and break down fiber. All it does is tear your digestive systems lining and cause leaky gut. The blue zone in Japan consumes the most pork of any other community on the planet, but nobody pushing a vegetarian agenda will ever mention this. Blue Zone mythology is currently being pushed by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, that believes eating meat will damn your immortal soul.

Some points
Their diet was 85% carb, and 6% fat. Sweet potatoes (a Japanese sweet potato) made up almost 70% of their calories. Nuts were less than 1% of calories (the equivalent of 1/10 of an ounce a day) Oil was less than 2% of calories (which is about 1 tsp a day) and sugars were less than 1% of calories (less than a tsp a day)
The total animal products including fish was less than 4% of calories which is less then 70 calories a day. That is the equivalent of around 2 oz of animal products or less a day.
This is a population group worth idolizing.
Thank you. But 23g of fiber doesn't make sense with 85% carbohydrate. As a vegan I eat more fat and protein and less carbohydrate than that diet, and still get over 50 grams fiber in my diet.

They might be eating a lot of Japanese knot weed in that part of the world. Their are lots of good compounds in Japanese knotweed that could account for this longevity. ( piceatannol is one of these compounds )

Is Natto the only fermented food they eat or are there other fermented products we maybe don't know in the Western World? Is the consumption of green tea also a part of this study? It has a positive influence on the gut bacteria.

Thank you. They probably do as most Japanese people drink green tea such as Matcha and Kyoto is one of the most well-known tea growing areas in Japan.
the question then arises if it is the Bacteria causing Longevity or the butyrate they are producing, I would argue it is the latter as Butyrate has too many health benefits to list (just search pubmed), and is suspected as the underlying chemical responsible for the health benefits of a high fiber diet, you can also take sodium butyrate in pill form, I use it as a sleep aid instead of melatonin as there is no dependency risk.

I used to think seafood was best. But I don't like the new studies showing how microplastics accumulate in the body, especially in arterial plaques. Seafood is one of the main sources of plastic in our diets. This sounds crazy but its true. Also, there was an observational study in the UK on Omega 3, that showed it increased heart attack and stroke rates.
The problem with Omega 3's is that they quickly go rancid, unlike more saturated fats.
Unless the Omega 3's you consumed were kept refrigerated, light free and sealed in a oxygen free environment, it's almost guaranteed if you are taking Omega 3 suppplements that are rancid.

In Okinawa, in the past, they only really ate pig at celebrations that`s what the studies showed that were done at the time and, as you say, this aligns with traditional Japanese practises in prior times. American influencers are distorting traditional Japanese wisdom because they need to defend their meat-eating ideolog; very deeply ingrained. Actually, they ate very few animal products, including fish, according to the studies at the time.
You can also get butyrate from butter. In fact 'butyrate' is named after 'butter'.

As for the protein intake for seniors, I think we need to take a lot of factors into consideration; exercise, bone health, heart health, and gut health. I think so. We have a term Shindofuji, which means our body and soil are as one, and it recommends that we eat locally and seasonally. Locally grown foods are grown with the help of the soil microbiome of the region, which I think is suitable for your gut microbiome.

That's probably true. However it doesn't help people in modern circumstances, because there is no longer any such thing as a local microbiome. The soil too needs to be regenerated. Luckily we are our own microbe factories: we just need to start feeding our microbes the proper high fiber whole plant foods. With some fermented vegetables to help stimulate new species. However, if you can, do grow some of your own organic vegetables and fruit. It doesn't get more local than that.
Regarding "consuming meat" which you mentioned brought up as a factor in studies, it appears you do not consider "fish" as meat, perhaps you only regard "red meat" such as pork, beef or mutton as meat? But from what I observed from discussions & publications of such "studies", white meat such as fish, chicken & eggs are all regarded as meat/protein which the most recent & updated longevity & healthy dietary studies & guidelines promote & classify as good & healthy source of meat. While consuming red meat especially processed ones such as sausages has been found in multiple studies to lead to detrimental health effects(eg.increase risk in breast cancer, heart diseases etc.)
Thank you for your comment. Sorry for the confusion. When I say meat, I usually mean beef, pork mutton, and chicken, and don't include fish or eggs. In Japan, these distinctions are not as clear since there aren't many vegetarians and vegans, meaning people who consciously avoid animal products. Even Dr. Yuji Naito, one of the researchers of Kyotango Longevity Cohort Study, called the Japanese diet a plant-based diet, even if it includes seafood. But he said people in Kyotango ate very little beef and pork and he thinks the absence of these red meat may have contributed the gut microbiota of these people.

Good question. I suggest try to make a fermentation from some freeze dried Natosha. If it ferments the new beans into more Natto, then it should be good and active.

Both Jako and Niboshi are sardines, but jako is smaller(4-5cm) than niboshi(7-10cm).
We usually eat jako with rice and we use niboshi as soup stock.😊
It is Jako. It is also called Chirimen Jako. They are baby sardines. I have never heard of Inoshi.
In the US, I love sardines, and usually have several tins of wild caught/ water processed sardines on hand. Small fish are lower on the food chain.

Our “hunter and gatherer” ancestors ate lots of meat. They probably weren’t so much hunters as they were trappers. Humans are highly intelligent and we likely built traps to catch prey. Food grew everywhere before the governments and corporations changed all that. We had an apple and pear tree in my backyard in the 80s and I was told I couldn’t eat the fruit because the trees weren’t sprayed and properly cared for. I really thought it would make me sick. I am over 65 young men with no health problems now in Russia. 1. Very few sea food. 2. Average phisical activjty. 3. No real social contacts.
I deny sea food because of high mercury content in sea fish.
Is 65yrs considered "long lived" for men in Russia? Maybe you should only come bragged about your longevity to these Japanese people in 35 yrs time after you lived above a hundred years old? I don't have data for mercury level of fishes caught in the Black Sea, but if you are concerned about heavy metals, its usually bigger animals/fishes, the predators at the top of the foodchain(eg. Sharks, huge fishes such as bluefin tuna) that end-up accumulating more mercury in their bodies. Consuming smaller & less carnivorus fishes from the sea pose no such mercury hazard, the huge number of lucid & quick-witted Japanese centenarians who have been consuming seafood all their lives can attest to the safety of consuming seafood.
Mercury depends on type of fish. Long living predator fish on top of the food chain get more mercury from fish and have a long time to collect it. Smaller fish contain less, sardines just very little amounts.

Fish contains mercury anyway. I try not to eat any seafood.
It’s ok man. Fish and rice isn’t for me either. Let them eat all of it, plus their beans. I am 68, go to the gym 5 times a week and lift heavy, bench over 300 Lbs, plus other things. We will see who dances on whose grave.

Just to be clear, if you don't also have the "correct" genetics to use a specific diet or microorganisms to your benefit, it won't work as well, if at all
If someone figures out the perfect Japanese diet, then it will likely work for a lot of Japanese, but not necessarily that much for westerners.
Just keep that in mind before entirely changing diets.
