As a new player I did the same thing with Jack. What I learnt from watching pros wasn’t stance switching but variety. Timing of certain things and common tactics. My Jack in T7 became so much better once I found my own play style using what worked with me from pros.
Yeah but these pros study everything from frames , to punishments and every little detail of what works and doesn’t . they have so much time playing this game , I admit it’s an amazing game but your always going to go against these players that played this game since they were like 7 years old lol I’m a new player too but it’s nuts man
Thank you for the straight up efficient notes. So often I have to speed up videos because people talk way too much about nothing and I'm trying to get to the good info. Subscribed
Another thing that you can do, is Follow the players from the leaderboards you are interested in, and then in the search for replay filters you can change the top setting to "Following" and it will filter only your followed players' replays.
the thing about adapting a new playstyle to your gameplay is that it takes time and practice. Most of the time, you will fail cuz you're doing something you're not used to, but if that style of play really works and you want to get better, then you have to practice it until it feels like it's your normal gameplay
I really liked seeing how you decided what to take notes on when watching the replay! One thing I felt was missing though is that (it seems like) you didn't really observe the Law player and try and make note of his habits, which maybe Meo-Il was doing from the start. I think that likely influences his gameplan some too, so while your note might be "lots of stances", he may have tested the Law player in the beginning with the first time or two he entered stances to see if he pressed buttons. Since he didn't, he decided to use more stance mixups - but if he had been mashed on, I imagine he wouldn't have used nearly as many stances, which may have influenced your notes. This is the first Tekken I'm actually playing ranked in though, so maybe I'm way off and at the top level most people just stick to their respective gameplan regardless of who their opponent is!
Happy my victors neutral is already like his. My mixups are nasty and this my first tekken. Guess ACTUALLY looking at the full moveset and reading everything really is important
What I've learned so far is that knocking someone down with a throw or power crush is as good as launching them into a combo, because Victor has so many tools to hit you while on the ground and far away. This allows me to back away and fish for power crushes/mid launches/long range poke instead the usual mid/low game.
How do you tell how much of the gameplan is applicable generally vs only a certain matchup/ player? I ask because you say you should do more stances, but its possible that it law just has less effective ways to deal with them for example.
generally the game plan should be fine against most character match ups, so what you really need to adapt to is the players playstyle. Their timing, if they mash when you do stances etc.
The time it takes to go into a stance (when you’re not going to stance from a string ) is too long You have to have an opponent that will hesitate, if they don’t you just eat hits from people mashing I like Victor because you can change his pace build up plus frames so if they mash you can chew through their health or stay passive and hit big counters and take chunks And hitting his unblockable is the chef’s kiss Others characters can do this but I feel Victors tool kit is fine tuned for it
I've gotta remember that some characters just get busted in heat. Victor gets an 8 frame jab AND a 14 WS2 launcher. Heat REALLY throws in a wrench in to the cog of frame data. It essentially doubles the amount of matchup knowledge you need. This game is crazy.
@PhiDX FT10 set between Arslan Ash and Knee is a good showcase of Aslan Ash's take on Victor. He basically plays Victor for the majority of the whole set and it's a perfect opportunity to get an overview on how Victor could be utilized at the highest level.
D1, 1. which jails on hit and is safe if it jails. Tracks both sides. Ur dead if he blocks the first hit though. Has cs properties. It’s unparriable and high crushes. Raw b1 and variations for ssr. Pressure from stances comes from the threat of running 2 vs perfumer approach as they are looking for a ss to step running 2. Consider b1 for entry to perfumer even though it might be statistically not viable. b1 also panic move.
It’s funny I did exactly this last night, was downloading ghosts from the leaderboards to study to learn raven more and came across this guy. Didn’t know you could go through their matches as well though
You can basically download every replay of PVP online matches except ones in private lobbies I think. I believe there is a UA-cam channel that uploads those high rank replays.
PhiDX, you have no idea how I appreciate your content. Especially as a new player. I'm on day 3, and I can beat people who are Genryu and above. I've already been called a smurf, and that's all thanks to your insight on the game.
One thing I can say for sure is that getting good at Tekken requires you to be good at movement. The summary of being a good Tekken player is: 80% movement skills and 20% character knowledge. Knowing your character inside out and not being good at movement cannot help you against players with better movement at the highest level. All the best players are just good at reading opponent moves and counter with their own excellent movement.
One small thing I think was missed from meo-il was his use of b+1. Just a really solid glue poke for Victor with the pushback on block (which he used to setup ch/whiff punish situations) and it actually tracks his weak side so helps with the linearity. Great content as always ❤
Victor’s wr2 is godlike in this game. +5 on block mid counter hit launcher that is hard af to sidestep because of online lag. Probably one of the best moves in the entire game.
I know I’m not the first to say this….but gawd damn dude, your content helps me improve daily. Doesn’t matter if it’s about characters I never play against or will never play myself.
This guys name isn’t Arslan Ash. Anyway, thank you so much, I feel so much more comfortable with this game since subbing (Victor player). *One aspect that you didn’t copy was catching them with the while standing 2 or pressing 22 out of perfumer. That might have created more panic and caught him mashing.

What I suggest is going to a replay where you're taking damage and break down the moments that you take damage bite by bite. If you have footage of a particular game where you're losing and you aren't sure why. I'm willing to take a look to give you some tips.
Just go to the replay of the match you lost and you can literally play the match again and see what you could’ve done differently. I just used it to learn how to get more damage out of floor breaks and situations where I drop combos or punish wrong
Hey phi or another helpful member of the comments: I picked up t8 and it’s my first fighting game. Loving it and staying humble in ranked: I wanted to know when I should manually be getting up/ side rolling off the ground. And when just holding back to get up blocking is the best option. It seems like there are some times I could be getting up quicker if I weren’t just defaulting to holding back every time.
i finally figured it out, the song that plays on the second match keept bugging me because i swear i heard it before, so i thought it was phidx having a playlist playing it's just that it has a couple similarities with BlazBlue CF's menu music
How do you know he "mashed " and not just "pressed "? I know this sounds loaded, but as someone who's trying to stop mashing, I wasn't expecting to hear that an expert player mashed something. When I think "mash" i think panic pressing. Is that off?
The reason he mashed was to get his move out as fast as possible at the exact frame that his character finished recovering. He knew exactly what move he was trying to use. This is different from what is known conventionally as mashing where a person will just press any random button to do any move to hit their opponent, they don’t know what they’re doing.
Tactically mashing to get an input out as soon as possible. (e.g. Someone hits your shield and is -15, u start mashing ur 15f UF+4 or df+2 or something to get it out in time to punish)

Victor's d2 is actually very weak against players with good movement, it can't even interupt Ling's carli roll 😅 using PER 1+2 or PERdf WS moves on wake up is actually pretty cool. PER 221 is a high that's only -1 on blk and it is a counter hit launcher, which make PER2,2 into iai mix-up becomes much scarier. good video as always👍

I think mashing in this instance means repeatedly doing a certain input. Ex. Mashing df2 after blocking rage art

This is different from what is known conventionally as mashing where a person will just press any random button to do any move to hit their opponent, they don’t know what they’re doing.

Mashing means "pressing buttons from frame disadvantage," does not necessarily mean panic, although the two are often tied together
