Jokes aside, it was SO NICE to have a less experienced player asking questions as part of the video - they asked a lot of questions I wanted the answers to, and really improved the value I got out of this Also Judy Cruh, lol
I was just starting to implement aggressive sidestepping, and it felt really good, so I'm glad you're here to tell me to do it a bit less instead of more and more.
Same. He is making me realise how many bad habits I picked up in 7 thanks to bad advice online. I am glad I took a long break from that game and now I can relearn some stuff properly
I don't think offensive stepping is bad per se. As long as you're not flowcharting it, it's fine. If you notice your opponent likes jab checking you after blocking a DF1, by all means, step and launch that shit.
Hey Phi, this is unrelated to this video but I followed your advice on your last video about learning how to punish properly and being more patient and waiting strings out has helped so much, I am almost out of the red ranks :D
This man is a goldmine for people like me. Been a Tekken player for like more than a decade but I feel like I learned so much about stand blocking, punishment, when to SS, etc in the past few days than I ever did for the last decade or so. Making my way through yellow ranks and it felt insurmountable to me before I checked this channel, but it's unbelievable how much 'comfortable' the yellow ranks became after watching his tips.
Absolute gem of a video. PhiDX is really the best learning resource out there right now. I fear a bit that the prospect of labbing all kinds of situations of two consecutive moves will seem overwhelming to people. I think it is really important to get some quick wins! Maybe you could do a video on typical flowcharts to blow up by sidestepping. (Bryan b1 on block into df2 -> SSR to beat etc.)
The questions BoxBox is asking make me really happy because not only does it show that he’s very seriously trying to engage with the learning process, it’s causing him to learn a fundamental truth about Tekken and all fighting games: these games are built on edge cases and sometimes stuff just doesn’t make sense
I never want to hear the words Virtua Fighter is too hard ever again lmao. This game just has layers of obtuse need to know knowledge and we are lucky to have you explain this stuff in a way that makes sense! Thank you Phi.
This is true. In VF sidestep and tracking moves are much more standardized and therefore far easier to understand. I think is one of the reasons VF has had an in depth tutorial in the past but Tekken never really has. It's too complicated to cover all this.
Another masterpiece video! Seriously! Question? Can I link your Knee jab breakdown video to the comments of one of my streams? I’d like to reference it and push my whopping 385 subs to see it.
You need to get Max on the channel, I love the Dood, but he often only gets the barebones of Tekken and completely misses all the nuance. He's also just great to have a conversation with about fighting games.
This is where the encyclopedia that is Tekken becomes tedious. Sidestepping is awesome, what isn't awesome is moves being tied to specific directions of sidestep. Like dodging one move with a sidestep right vs a sidestep left is just a slog to memorize. It would be perfectly serviceable with a smaller roster but theres what, 40ish characters in t8? And they are only going to cram more and more in over time. It's just too much specific crap, and now you're talking about having to sidewalk kazuya's electric as apposed to properly timing a normal sidestep. Ok so some moves it's like 'ok it's linear gotta side step it. Oh wait it tracks right so I gotta step left. It still hits me maybe if I delay it. It still hits me. ok what if I sidewalk. still hits me. Ok lets do a delayed sidewalk. Ding, we dodged it. Now multiply that process times [(40x120 = 4800)a conservative estimate of the amount of moves in tekken] and you can dodge every move in tekken, congratulations. You are also 50 years old now and can't react to wavedash electric anymore.
I would like to counterargue. The ability to use certain directions to counter portions of the move sets creates depth and style. It's like different builds in mobas/RTS or different macro strategies. Tie that to the mechanics, and you really do get fast-paced chess. It's not necessary at most levels, just at top level
@@PhiDX I mean fair enough, if it's part of what makes the game unique and something people enjoy then I'm down. For me, a longtime fighting game player but a very new tekken player, it just seems like a needless amount tedium before I get to 'enjoy' the game i.e. play at a reasonably high level where people aren't killing you with dumb crap cause you haven't memorized the specific counter. I am still loving this game though and intend to continue playing for the foreseeable future. Def not a deal breaker.
You’re doing amazing work for beginners, it helps understand the way Tekken works more and also good tips to get better, all of this in a calming and entertaining way
So this Tekken actually gives you more options to practice these things. Watching your replays, you can take control of the situation for ten seconds to see what you need to do against it. It allows for you to SPECIFICALLY practice tech against your opponents.
Been watching your vids since I started learning, and I have a question. Would you or would you not recommend using "special style" to an absolute noob who wants to set in the basics (movement, punishes, bread and butter combos), and then go from there? Or it would be bad because I'd have to relearn to play "properly"?

Love the vids, any chance for some kind of general wall combo guide? I'm not really sure what to do after a wall splat outside of memorising lots of combos for every distance from the wall.
Omfg the "if a kazuya player could wavedash all day without getting hit, that's it for them, theyre HIM in their mind". So true tho, pure dopamine to wavedash constantly and consistently
boxbox def lost motivation. People overstate the tekken knowledge. You don't need to know how every character needs to be sidestepped. Most people will only use a few moves in neutral in close up scenarios. You realistically only need to know 4-5 moves to sidestep and even then, unless you are having a real problem with a move, you don't NEED to sidestep it. You can also just play normally and whenever you run into an issue, just see if you can sidestep is during the match (assuming it isn't a launcher). And that'll really help you remember more than just doing a test in practice
Woke up to work on Frame traps, but this showed up at the top of my page, so I guess I'm doing SS drills lol. I feel attacked Edit: Naw, my man trolling. As soon as I typed that, you said to work on frame traps, punishment and block strings lol so going to store this for later haha
This is a great tutorial for mechanics but a terrible tutorial for actual gameplay. The best way to learn is to just fight and learn as much about every character's move sets. Then Fight, Fight and Fight till you drop. Once you start thinking during combat, your done for. You need to work off instinct. Then you can only go higher. Then you can think while fighting with instinct. It's basically using two parts of your brain rather than one.
Bandai namco should pay you for these. It blows my mind to think of many people would probably get filtered without someone like you online that can break things down in a digestive manner. I've heard quite a few people in my area that dropped the game cuz they get online and just get obliterated, I tell them to watch you lol.
4:10 Not sure if it comes up later, but for anyone wondering how this move gets away being only -6, it doesn't launch crouchers, instead becoming +5 on hit. So low reward for calling out crouchers, but great for frame traps or punishes.
Great video man. I've been tryna coach my friend in Tekken, and I'm just getting to the point where I'm trying to explain the importance of movement/positioning. Now I can just have him watch this lol

2:15 Phil is wrong with this one. Almost every damage dealing move has hitlines and tracking value related to the opponent's vertical axis. A good example is Ling's debug in T7. Actual hitlines of that move take only a quarter of a full circle drawn on the ground (you can check it with Tekkenoverlay). If you jump over Ling during her debug she will still hit you because of the "rotational value" of that specific move. Her hitlines don't magically expand she just rotates depending where the opponent's vertical axis is
