Yep, this is what I was afraid of when I saw the first images of the game. Glad I paid the premium for the original Clans instead Unfortunate though, because this game deserved to get a proper reprint.
We had exactly the same issue with the rivers not being clear, to the extent that we scored what we thought were isolated groups 2 times only to realize later there was a tiny piece of river actually connecting another space. Very poor board for this reason. They really only had to do one thing with the board... clearly show each space's connections to other spaces. And they failed. Zee and others, honest question... how do you think an obvious flaw like this got through the testing process?
Yes, but the starting positions of the various colors are different each game. If you look at the board, you'll see that the lakes and rivers create regions of 5 spaces. Each region is populated by each of the 5 colors, 1 color placed randomly on each space. We always do setup before the color tiles (the cards were tiles in Clans) were distributed, so that no one could give themselves a favorable position.
I hate this game so much. I bought this because it was on sale for more than half price but it’s just awful. The set up is way too tedious for a short game, the Druid components look weird, the board is not clear at all, most of the time I wasn’t sure what spaces I could and couldn’t move to (you’re right about the rivers) and the scoring is kind of janky and confusing. 2/10
I bought this for $6 online and after watching the review, I am really excited to play it. Looks like a lot of fun for me and my group.
