    It is so important to look at psychological or environmental factors. They commonly get missed!! Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, absolutely, something I'm hugely passionate about trying to get across and like you said, unfortunately too much emphasis is put on tissue and structure. There's going to be a little pain education series on the channel coming up discussing psychosocial factors in the next month or two. Great channel by the way!

    Thanks for the useful insights. I have been dealing with osteoarthritis in my foot for a few years - as an active runner, finding the perfect balance of activity has been stressful but worth it. Still have bothersome flare ups every so often that make me overanalyze if I’m doing too much/if the increased pain is permanent, but it’s reassuring hearing your thoughts.

      Hi Caleb, thanks for the comment. Completely appreciate what you are saying. It can really challenging to try and find out what works for you when it comes to managing an O.A. flare up. I suppose the message is some of the time it will be a bit of trial and error to find out what works for you and there are no black and white answers. The important think to know, however, is that a flare up doesn't define how your condition will develop over time.

    I have oa in both knees, hips, shoulders. I feel that resting the joint and applying heat, works best. If I move the joints the pain gets worse, but when I rest the joint, the pain goes away. My current osteoarthritis flareup has lasted 2 months.

    I don't get stiffness in my knees. Just get bad pain that can last a week or more. Does anyone else get the same?

    Brilliant video, thanks so much. Exactly what I've been doing is over-analysing. I'm pretty complicated in that I have Charcot Marie Tooth with arthritis in my ankles as a result. I cycled every day up until a big flare up 8 months ago. I started just the last couple of weeks cycling again on the flat short distances near home and have another big flare up. I'm due to collect a rather expensive e-bike at the weekend so a bit paranoid that cycling (even on an e-bike) will cause me flare ups. Surgeon says to keep cycling but am just concerned that the mechanics of my ankles due to CMT are causing a harmful motion (maybe lateral) when pedalling and it's making things worse.
    Any advice would be great! Thinking maybe stiffer soled trainers when cycling might mitigate somewhat..

      Hi Simon, thanks for the comment. I certainty wouldn't feel comfortable giving specific advice on your specific situation without a proper assessment. In general, I would say if you are weaning back in to cycling post flare it might be easier to do this on on a static/indoor bike as you can control the variables easier: resistance, time, speed etc. You might be able to get a cheaper turbo trainer second hand. Could also play around with the saddle height to reduce ankle flexion. Failing that could consider a professional bike fit, although appreciate the cost involved. I would also assume lateral mechanics should be minimal when cycling but again unsure in your specific case. Hope that helps a bit.

    Hi i discovered two months back i have O.A.stage 2. I still have stiffness in my both knees especially my left knee. Trying to cope with the situation. Bit confused will this flare up subside or the stiffness is permanent? Please guide.

    • @GenuinePhysio
      @GenuinePhysio  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Namita, watching other videos on the channel might help. I wouldn't necessarily categorize stiffness as a 'flare up' in symptoms. Stiffness is a commonly associated symptom with OA and if that is what you are referring to then, yes, that can improve over time if managed well. Hope that helps.

      @@GenuinePhysio i actually climbed 18 kms hill. In one day. Its our religious place. It was an inclined hill. Without any rest i walked for 8-10 hrs. I got the pain within few kms of my journey but i pushed myself that i can do. I had no idea what is happening. I took painkillers and kept my journey going. Next day when i walked down the hill it became so torturous. The pain in my left knee started on first day and the second knee also suffered. After getting back home i took complete rest thought the pain will subside. It didnt go. I showed to the doctor. He restricted me on climbing stairs and bending knees. Also i took physiotherapy for 15 days. My pain has subside. I am doing light exercises, walk and cycling. I am better what i was before 2 months. But still unable to fold my knees and feel lot of stiffness. Doctor said take injections in both knees every year. I am not keen on doing so. I want to lead my normal life as before. Dont know how to-get back to normal. The stiffness doesn’t subside. I am worried will i be able to travel or do my routine work normally ? How long it takes to be normal?

      @@namitagautam705 there is a lot of information in there and without I proper assessment I wouldn't give out specific information, so if you wanted a specific long term plan that is a question for your physio. However, general comments would be: the findings you had on that x-ray would have been there prior to your hike, most likely when you had no knee pain at all so the x-ray should not dictate treatment. Everybody over a certain ages has O.A. changes on and x-ray where they have pain or not so they really aren't helpful in diagnosing O.A. Secondly, tissues tend to respond pretty well to changes in load that is built up gradually & progressive over a period of time. They don't tend to respond well to a significant change in load, quickly (that appears to be what has happened here). Thirdly, some relative rest may be appropriate for a short period but certainly not long term so if your pain allows, gradually build up to pre flare activities. Lastly, injections are definitely, not a long term solution, and only tend to help with short term pain relief, if your pain is minimal they are not appropriate. Time frames are always difficult but the joint needs load and movement and this should help to alleviate some stiffness.
