"I am not an expert of medical practice, so please don’t take any of whatever Victor is doing too seriously." Don't worry, I don't think people are looking too hard for strict scientific accuracy when it comes to things like Frankenstein.
BallisticPacifist The original book never really mentioned what the hell Frankenstein did either, so whatever form of science that comes out of this is no more accurate than the actual literature.
At the time this was written, it was actually scientifically accurate. During this time, the study of galvanism, or making corpses move by use of electricity, was very new and trendy. To the first readers of this book, it could very well have been reality.
@@ibenindrevr2547 The book doesn't mention exactly what the method was because Victor refuses to say what he did in case others might try it. It never mentions electricity, only grave-robbing
I once had a friend try and shift a class discussion on Frankenstein's commentary on ethics and morality to science, asking about things like "muscle memory" and that shit. I think they might've missed the point.....
@@gb7512 I guess it depends on how you present it. With regards to "muscle memory" (the term is something of an oversimplification of the relevant processes but whatever), you could use that as a jumping off point for asking how much of our thoughts and actions are largely involuntary physiological processes, or the results of conditioning, or things like that, and what that implies for the concepts of identity, morality, free will, etc.
I mean, electric frequencies run through our bodies. And electricity is used to start up your heart if it stops. So understand where they got the idea. But reviving the dead the way Victor did is impossible.
Yeah, Mary Shelley was deliberately vague because there was a lot of debate at the time about the nature of the "spark of life", and she didn't want to get into that debate. She just wanted to take it as given that Frankenstein succeeded somehow and get on with the story of how he fucked up caring for the life he created. (There's evidence that Mary Shelley's father may have been abusive, so she might have been working through some things.)
@@ettinakitten5047 i've also heard mentioned around that victor wanted to keep his methods secret so the experiment couldn't be recreated? since i believe its all told from his point of view. this could just be a fan theory but it would make perfect sense to me
In the book it was earlier mentioned that Victor grew interested in electricity when he was younger, so while he didn't describe how he created life in 5 lines (lmao) I guess the electricity mention is where Hollywood movie makers got the idea to add that in!!
In this presentation, at least, I think the first part of this video was Victor being expelled from University for his "affront to everything that is moral and decent". And although they could not prevent anything Frankenstein did once he was no longer beholden to them, they were able to retain their principles. In both this and "Jekyll and Hyde", the "little minds" were correct in not providing their "mad researchers" the means to continue their work under their approval.
I love how he compares himself to prometheus. I.E. the guy who literally ended up with his liver getting eaten by a bird for eternity. Just one more little detail that shows this guy's ridiculous lack of foresight.
It could be Frankenstein implying himself to be "Savior of Man" as he is literally reviving a bunch of dead corpses into one while Prometheus himself helped and saved the humans by giving them fire so that they may survive. He may see himself to be in Prometheus' position, a brilliant yet shunned Savior who's goals must be achieved in order to save mankind from death and struggle regardless of the negative consequences. This is all just a guess though
@@alcyone5776 Interestingly, the myth implies that Prometheus was punished for not letting humans figure out fire for themselves instead of an essential cheat (though the gods were also incredibly *petty*🙄) The Modern Prometheus (Victor) tried to reanimate a "perfect" version of mankind to "cheat" death..and ironically the Creature later discovers fire by itself without input from his so called "creator". It all comes full circle.
Well book Frankenstein was originally titled by Mary Shelley as the Modern Prometheus so I think thats where they got the inspo from considering how they actually stick in actual excerpt of the book
Sean Treadway western philosophy was the birth of modern day science. Sir Isaac Newton was a natural philosopher in his day. The scientific method was created by philosophers.
Thé Fear of Death shall drive the human race before it in a maddening sprint to outrun It..till they wheel about. Teeth bared armed hate in hand; till it has been slain like all gods before it..beaten to death with the stone and corpse flensed and muscle dissected..Progress achieved at last.
Imagine if it's not even YOUR body that gets brought back to life, but your heart or brain is in this amalgamation of flesh. 8 ft tall, 250 lbs of unfamiliar flesh, covered in stitches and having different memories associated with every other muscle
ngl tho, Birth To My Creation is the most suggestive song in this musical. Listen to how Victor describes his Creation. Listen to it. Listen to the heavy breathing. This man wasn't just looking for something to fuel his ego, he was looking for a top.
That's the difference between a mad scientist and a proper scientist. They don't follow good experimental procedure. At least Herbert West knew to start with animals.
I went on a rant in class because most people referred to him as "Dr. Frankenstein" instead of "Victor" or "Frankenstein" and VICTOR IS A COLLEGE DROPOUT, HE NEVER GOT A MD OR A PHD WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS
That is, in fact, what doctors do. Back in the day, there was a booming practice of corpse-robbing for universities and general men of science, because the Church wouldn't allow experiments on normal cadavers at the time. I'm not saying Victor was a paragon of scientific virtue, but in this case, grave-robbing was a fully-justified course of action. Furthermore, Victor's mistake came in shunning and abusing his creation- reminders, he managed to _bring back the dead,_ the most incredible scientific breakthrough in the history of modern medicine. Creating his "monster" would have been nothing short of groundbreaking science if it weren't for the fact that he decided to treat his creation like a monster and cause it to hate humanity.
@@stevethebarbarian9876 Sorry, it's the dropping out of college becaus he thought his professeres were beneath him and also the literally murdering people for me sis
I mean, he did say perfect in EVERY way. With only the BEST organs and limbs. Which means he chose the best ass in all creation for this man of his, and not only that-
thank you for making the creature pretty cause thats something PEOPLE FORGET,,, in the book it clearly states that the creature was beautiful but his eyes were so terrifying, thats why victor abandoned him
Well, Victor states "How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form? His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips." Putting together parts that were chosen to be individually attractive does not always add up to an attractive result. To be fair, a lot of the disgust expressed by Victor here might be attributed to the implications of the entity's creation, more than its physical appearance. Later, the creature recounts his first interaction with human villagers: "One of the best of these I entered, but I had hardly placed my foot within the door before the children shrieked, and one of the women fainted. The whole village was roused; some fled, some attacked me..." Keep in mind that at this point he is wearing clothing and has taken no aggressive action other than walking through a cottage door uninvited. I think it would take more than basically just cataracts to make children scream, a woman faint, and others run or attack at the sight of him.
@@evanwickstrom5698 Hence my rebuttal here to the "creature is actually totes hot" reading. (assuming "freak some people out", as you so generously put it, can here be sufficiently opposed to "beautiful but with odd eyes")
BallisticPacifist Yeah, that’s a fair analysis. I guess my interpretation would be that there’s room for both? You could have someone be both attractive and disturbing to look at simultaneously. Someone where they are “objectively” beautiful, but visually offputting enough to unnerve those who see them. Almost like the uncanny valley, where you have someone who looks mostly perfect, but the imperfections are enough to make the entire visage disturbing instead of enthralling.
@Austin Wood In this context it means an epicentre or The Big Location for a particular interest or group. Eg. Silicon Valley is a mecca for computer nerds It does also have a religious connotation though
as I continue to binge this song, I notice things, I know they're not intentional but when the chorus sings what Victor sang "The finest human / in all creation / body, bone / and mind" they don't sing the "/ and mind" part, referencing the fact that Frankenstein's monster is just as broken as Victor due to victor's mistreatment, and in terms of his body and biological parts, he is perfect, but in terms of his mind, he's new to the world and the first things he experiences is suffering, pain and neglect
That's a great observation. I didn't realize the line immediately transitions from "Body, bone and..." cuts to " darkness". The Creature's tragedy is that despite his great intelligence, his darkness manifested unchecked into acts of violence and deception.
True! If you consider the original book, his mother's death was a major reason for him to start his research, so I like to think that's who Victor has in mind.
@@vvarx yeah in the book he doesn't take his moms death welll at all. i mean, he says 'yeah i got over it, it was really sad but life goes on' but he kind of didn't get over it
I like to think that the « Modern Prometheus » tittle was to oppose him to mythological Prometheus, because where Prometheus was a good father to the humanity, Victor was a VERY BAD father to his Creation
I love that in the book it doesnt mention how he actually brought Adam (what i call the monster) back to life. It just led up to it and then we find him in his room, sick and with Clarval taking care of him
Apparently there were several conflicting theories about the nature of life at the time and Mary Shelley didn't want to take sides. In-story, of course, Victor didn't want to give enough information that someone else might be able to repeat the process and make another monster, so he skipped over that part.
I love when he's describing his creation as "the perfect human" because it's suppose to come across as "I will make something even better than my own existence through my intelligence" but to me it comes across as "I'm a twink in the 1800s who can't get a man so I will literally build my dream husband and you can't stop me"
@@NyxieLove22 He does though in the book. Asks Frankenpapa to build him a bride and Frankentwink promises to do so, until he realized that there’s a possibility that they’re have offspring and make freaky, undead, monster babies.
I love the details in this. The easter eggs on the books especially are just [chef's kiss]. I saw "The Sorrows of Werther" up there, and I got _so_ excited when I spotted it! To mention nothing of just how good this looks in general, your attention to detail and sprinkling of references makes it obvious that you _have_ done your research, even with the sun beginning to rise at 1 AM for dramatic effect. That was also a thing that looked _very_ good, btw. Even though I know what happens after this scene and how terribly downhill everything in the story spirals down from here, you _still_ managed to get me caught up in Victor's naively optimistic excitement while I was watching this.
Lalas181 i was waiting for someone to get the book title references!!😭🙏 i’m glad you enjoyed the nods to the original book! i got myself to read it again just for the sake of this😂😂 (and for future frankenstein animatics 👀). it truly puts a smile on my face to hear your kind words, thank you for appreciating!!💖💕
The Sorrows of Werther as in the Goethe book? I had to read a good chunck of that in secondary school, but what relevance does it have ti Frankenstein? I'm not to familiar with Frankenstein to be honest
TheLuckySpades when the creature talks with Frankenstein one of the books he mentions reading was the Sorrows of Werter. Werter, along with with Paradise Lost's Lucifer, are characters he says he identifies with as lonely people who are rejected much as he was.
The "Popular" at the end, tho😂 I bet that's what Victor was thinking at the moment. "Oh man, I cracked the secret of life! I can sit on the popular table now!"
After hearing 'Popular' at the end, my brain went to Victor---instead of running away from the creature and fainting like a little b#tch--gets all excited and absolutely DOTES on them. Promising them new clothes and an education and being all 'Oh! Everyone's going to love you! We...just need to make a few adjustments." Edit: I made myself sad
The creature is a he. Just saying. In the book, he was clearly masculine. Why did you feel the need to refer to _him_ as a _them?_ That just does _not_ make any sense to me. But, OTHER than that, I LIKE this idea of yours!! 😁.

I have almost no words to describe how masterful this animation is, but I'm going to try. Long post ahead, strap in lads: First off, I noticed that in every other shot, Victor's eyes are fully colored in, but in the one frame where he sings "insanity", his eyes turn clear and you can see a glint in his glasses, perhaps alluding to the fact that he is already beginning to spiral out of control by giving him a fleeting moment where he looks "off". I don't know if it was intentional or not but it ALSO looks very similar to the Creature's eyes, who is dubbed a monster from its waking moments. Perhaps this is an allusion that Frankenstein himself is the true monster, and not the Creature, or even just to the monstrous tendencies Victor can (and will) display in pursuit of science, despite having genuinely good intentions in the beginning. You can already tell he's beginning to develop quite a bit of an ego too, in echoing his professor's words incredulously and referring to them as "little minds" who "belittle" his dream- (which, to be fair, they did completely shut down his ideas as absolute madness, but nobody had raised a dead man before either so...there's that.) Next point I wanted to bring up was your uses of color! I noticed you used a lot of green, which is symbolic of life (in particular, rebirth) and nature; it's actually the most calming color on the wheel besides blue. The hues you used though were almost sickly and unnatural, and again I don't know if it was purposeful, but it gives off the vibe that something is off; which especially makes sense given that Victor is giving rebirth in an extremely unnatural and morally questionable way and attempting to play God by giving life to a corpse and bringing what he believes to be salvation to the human race. (And oh, the irony, for in creating the Creature and abandoning him, he indirectly sealed his own ruin, and the ruin of the people he loved!) I love it. Continuing on, your backgrounds are extremely detailed and I highly commend you for them! I can see you put a lot of passion into even the little things and that deserves applause. Speaking of detail, I noticed Victor looked especially emotional when singing of "loved ones taken in their prime". Is he thinking of his mother, perhaps, who he has lost to death? I find it very interesting as well how there is a slight shift in Victor's voice when he sings the glory of the new world will be his. You can literally almost pinpoint when his desire for validation and glory starts to weed out his noble intentions of reviving the dead to alleviate suffering and prove that hard work and research DO produce results; and it's chilling. Other details that had me grinning from ear to ear was how on the beat Victor pulled out his pocket watch on "the time" (idk why but it's timed so PERFECTLY I almost wanna holler) and also how the room seemed almost illuminated in a heavenly light when Victor declared he was going to find the difference between the alchemists and God; calling himself the modern Prometheus who would essentially bring enlightenment..oh yes, and the way you had the screen a bit blurred when Victor first is picking himself up when the lightning struck and knocked him over, alluding to dizziness (NICE NICE NICE NICE)! People already touched on the sun coming up when Victor sings "darkness is gone" so I won't touch too much on that but that was also an excellent detail. I think the one thing that stood out the most to me though and that no one seems to have brought up yet, is how perfectly you timed the first beat of the Creature's heart on the EKG with the last beat of the song??? OH MY GOD. This piece is nothing short of phenomenal. Your transitions and angles are fluid and well done (this seriously looks like a storyboard, I know people have already said this but I'm SAYING IT AGAIN BECAUSE THEY'RE RIGHT), your attention to detail is masterful; the colors are wonderful, just.. 10/10. You got me back into this musical, and I'm sharing it with all my friends as well! Thank you SO much for making this and I wish you all the best.

I paused this thirty seconds in so I could like and favourite, pump up the volume, and make full screen - this was INCREDIBLE! Eris aw thank you!!🥰🥰 i’m glad you enjoyed those parts! the music and the beats are really important to me when i make an animatic, so i try to emphasize it with the visuals as much as possible!
I simply adore the idea of no one will love the creature because he's monstrous or whatnot, when my friend and I both agreed that we would adopt the creature if he ever becomes real.
I read this recently in one of my college classes, and the professor brought up an interesting point: the creature is actually beautiful, not a horribly disfigured face like so commonly portrayed. But why is Frankenstein scared by it's eyes? He theorized that it was because of the initial emptiness and the realization that he had brought something new to life and it had such potential to be good or be evil. Put simply, he thinks that Victor got cold feet about being a dad.
With the timing fixed up, this. Is. STUNNING!!! 💗💗💗I just enjoyed this and your crucial attention to detail as you hopped into Victor’s POV in this song handsomely paid off. Every emotion was captured, from excitement, determination, confidence, worry, concentration, to overcoming the worry of success or failure with relief and pride. Bravo! What a great spiritual successor and nod to the musical and to @rinreeper who started it all! :3 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It was, in fact, an off-Broadway musical, it would be on Broadway if the run was a big hit, unfortunately, there was another Frankenstein musical on Broadway at that time that was earning more to the box office, so you get it, no chance for this musical. However, even the another Frankenstein musical didn’t last long, every Frankenstein musical was a flop, and I think almost every scary/horror/thriller musical was forgotten in musical theatre history or at least wasn’t big in terms of earning money.

@@gb7512 I guess it depends on how you present it. Yeah, Mary Shelley was deliberately vague because there was a lot of debate at the time about the nature of the "spark of life", and she didn't want to get into that debate.
The way you can tell Victor is a madman is the way he stores the books on his shelf, with the spines to the wall
I'm now going to do that on one of my shelves
He probably memorized their location or something equally weird
I vote instead of Doctor Frankenstein, we call him College Dropout Frankenstein, because he, in fact, did not finish college.
Mr Frankenstein.
Hehe foresight. Get it, cause Prometheus literally means forethought
It could be Frankenstein implying himself to be
"Savior of Man" as he is literally reviving a bunch of dead corpses into one while Prometheus himself helped and saved the humans by giving them fire so that they may survive. He may see himself to be in Prometheus' position, a brilliant yet shunned Savior who's goals must be achieved in order to save mankind from death and struggle regardless of the negative consequences. This is all just a guess though
@@alcyone5776 Interestingly, the myth implies that Prometheus was punished for not letting humans figure out fire for themselves instead of an essential cheat (though the gods were also incredibly *petty*🙄)
The Modern Prometheus (Victor) tried to reanimate a "perfect" version of mankind to "cheat" death..and ironically the Creature later discovers fire by itself without input from his so called "creator".
It all comes full circle.

That's the difference between a mad scientist and a proper scientist. They don't follow good experimental procedure.
At least Herbert West knew to start with animals.
Plus he created a corpse out of multiple corpses instead of just starting with a normal corpse. Surely that'd be a lot easier?

@@SpaceClord He stole a bunch of body parts and killed people for organs, I DON'T THINK THAT'S WHAT DOCTORS DO. ALSO HE DROPPED OUT OF COLLEGE

Spook Dude yeah I’m here cause the doc is hot lol
Are you 12?
Ambiguous Sarcasm no? are you 5? ??
thank you for making the creature pretty cause thats something PEOPLE FORGET,,, in the book it clearly states that the creature was beautiful but his eyes were so terrifying, thats why victor abandoned him
Angel Flyer np! the beautiful monster design is by rinreeper! 😉✨
Well, Victor states "How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form? His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the
work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled
complexion and straight black lips."
Putting together parts that were chosen to be individually attractive does not always add up to an attractive result.
@@isnotmimi I mean, being visibly stitched together like a patchwork doll might freak some people out a lil bit.
Almost like the uncanny valley, where you have someone who looks mostly perfect, but the imperfections are enough to make the entire visage disturbing instead of enthralling.

as I continue to binge this song, I notice things, I know they're not intentional but when the chorus sings what Victor sang "The finest human / in all creation / body, bone / and mind" they don't sing the "/ and mind" part, referencing the fact that Frankenstein's monster is just as broken as Victor due to victor's mistreatment, and in terms of his body and biological parts, he is perfect, but in terms of his mind, he's new to the world and the first things he experiences is suffering, pain and neglect
Sean Treadway it WAS intentional tho

I have almost no words to describe how masterful this animation is, but I'm going to try. Long post ahead, strap in lads:
First off, I noticed that in every other shot, Victor's eyes are fully colored in, but in the one frame where he sings "insanity", his eyes turn clear and you can see a glint in his glasses, perhaps alluding to the fact that he is already beginning to spiral out of control by giving him a fleeting moment where he looks "off". You can already tell he's beginning to develop quite a bit of an ego too, in echoing his professor's words incredulously and referring to them as "little minds" who "belittle" his dream- (which, to be fair, they did completely shut down his ideas as absolute madness, but nobody had raised a dead man before either so...there's that.)
Next point I wanted to bring up was your uses of color!

I like the detail of there being a scar/seem around the neck because the guy was hanged so he would have to go in and fix his neck somehow.

I really appreciate the attention to detail in this and the accuracy to the book regarding the "monster" it looks great and came out fantastic
:3 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

what kind of monster has a bookshelf with the titles facing away from you
I found out about this musical almost 20 years ago and I’ve loved it. I never understood why it didn’t become a Broadway hit or even a movie.
I really love how you make him look more crazy in the eyes than leaving him nice an calm like this is a natural hobby
I HAVE NEVER CLICKED SO FAST OMG
Victor's epressions, the backgrounds, it's all so well done!

Where are they? I need them!
Me trying to figure out why I instantly love this song: "This song is amazing and has such a familiar vibe to its sound, why I do I feel like that?"
*Gets to the very end of the song and it sounds very Hunchback of Notre Dame-ish*
"Ohhh, that's why."
Fantastic animatic, and thanks for introducing me to this awesome song!
I do agree with the Notre dome thing. I watched the full musical on UA-cam and it all sounded so familiar. I realized a lot of the songs followed similar musical choice like Hunch Back Of Notre Dame. Truly a vibe lol 👍
Just like a real collage student he’s rushing around his room trying to finish his project three minutes before he needs to have everything ready.
