For those asking, the characters here are from the Chinese novel MoDaoZuShi or The grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. WeiWuXian, a demonic cultivator feared and hated by millions was killed 13 years prior to the main story (which is what this animatic is about) and was summoned back to life due to mysterious reasons! wwx cutitng his hair here was SO powerful. Long hair heavily symbolised ones ties to their family, and even book wwx was constantly pretending he isn't close with his family for their own protection until it ultimately destroyed them and his relationship to them. Cutting his hair along with the lyrics there really showed his willingness to everything on the line for his morals and ambitions. He put everything on the line to protect both the people he loves and the people he truly believes are worth saving, even if he's the only person that believes they deserve life. His death makes me so emotional because, while of course he was in the wrong on many things, a lot of what he's blamed for by both characters and fandom are things that he either HAD to do to survive (ie take up demonic cultivation) or did so out of a strong sense of moral. He truly wasn't a monster for protecting the innocent Wen even if everyone, FANDOM INCLUDED AT TIMES, tries to convince him he is.
It's a little late to answer but I'll do it anyway. You are absolutely right, I hate how the same fandom makes it seem as if WWX had gray morals or that everything was his fault, yes, he made mistakes but it was because of his immense morality of always doing the right thing even if everyone went against him, He did what he could do to survive and save INNOCENT people, even if that ended up destroying him (which happened in the end) the author herself said many times that both WWX and LWJ had correct, firm and fair morals, here are the rotten ones and " "wicked" was the cultured world in general, plus the class leaders and the rich.
"is the thing they see the thing I have to be" dude that fucking hurt SPOILER AHEAD! in the novel it was three months after JYL's death that WWX is finally killed, supposedly because his power backfired on him but the implication (or popular headcanon) is that it was suicide - he hated himself so much that his puppets turned on him, just like how they turned on JZS... I always imagined WWX as shell shocked in all of these three months, grieving his sister's death, grieving for Wen Qing and Wen Ning who were his last friends, blaming himself for their deaths and for the thousands of innocent lives he took in the aftermath of JYL's death, but he can't let go just yet because there were still other innocent Wens to protect.. there was no where left to run to so I think they were really just.. waiting for their deaths to come, and for WWX it was just him slowly going crazy alone in Burial Mounds... and in the end when the second siege occurred, he was really fighting for no reason, for a lost cause...
Ive always thought it was the backlash from destroying the amulet that turned his corpses against him, which is part of the reason why he waited until the last possible moment to destroy it.
It hurts even more when Wei Ying says he isn’t and won’t be a monster, showing that it doesn’t matter what anyone else will say because he’ll fight back. But Lan Wang Ji was shown in the end, eyes filled with tears and body painted with permanent wounds. Lan Zhan never thought Wei Ying was a monster. Wei Ying never got to know that though. Not only that, Jiang Cheng never thought he was a monster either. He said he hated him, but deep down inside the entire time the battle went on, Jiang Cheng knew it was his brother he was fighting, and it was his brother that died. Lan Zhan lost his soul mate, and Jiang Cheng lost his brother. And they both knew it. Only thing is that Wei Wu Xian didn’t. That’s what makes this more painful. It’s that Wei Wu Xian didn’t have the chance to know.
Every time I replay this it hits just a little harder- and at the end with the chanting of monster coming back into the background, it makes it seem like it’s Jc saying it since he’s the only other one with his mouth open besides Wwx... dunno what else to say, it just hits so hard for me. WAIT THINKING ABOUT IT MORE MAKES ME THINK HES TRY TO CONVINCE HIMSELF THAT WWX *IS* A MONSTER AND I- hhhh am not okay
Adding more cause I haven’t stopped watching this yet- So! I also like to think the reason Jc is the only one saying monster verbally versus everyone else, is the idea that to everyone else is that they are already convinced of the ‘fact’ wwx is a monster so it doesn’t have to be stated to themselves.
So like, yanli hand's him a-yuan's children's toy. And since the doll is black and white, the pattern on its clothes could be that of a wen soldier, or could be made to look like his xian-gege!
Rewatching this and listen I understand I’m biased towards the Wen Remnants but oof Jiang Yanli giving Wei Wuxian the Wen Doll... reminding him of why he’s been fighting so hard... i initially thought it was just a reference to Wen Yuan! but like its so easy to forget that Wei Wuxian’s original goal wasn’t to scare people or be a threat! Wen Qing begged for help and he saw people in need of help, and /helped/ them, and they accepted him into their life! They go from being fearful to welcoming him into their family and (clutches heart) i love them your honor. And the “being back the sun” line with the Wens in general!!! Hey OP !!!
I love the "bring back the sun" part with the Wen Sect because their symbol was the sun. It's very fitting and clever usage of the lyrics. Also this is beautiful and I get chills everytime I watch it. And thank you for featuring tortured looking Jiang Cheng because I feel like he was probably more horrified than angry at that point.

IM CRYING IN MY MATH CLASS HOW FUCKING DARE YOU (Oh my god this is so good. I was holding out until the very end, but then the cut to black and just seeing LWJ slowly crying, sitting on his own with his bandaged wounds-that got me man)
I have no idea who these characters are but oh my God??? The power??? First of all, my first time listening to what I believe is a Frozen musical song? Great song choice went beautifully. The reflection in the red water (?) solemnly starting to question his own nature due to others words. Asking his parents for guidance... The two little children cuddling with the father... The DOLL???Idk it's significance but I am HERE for it. Cutting hair? Just 👌👌👌 beautiful. The emotional climax to his whole dilemma, the skeletons crawling out as he stands up ready to fight, no longer hiding regardless of the fate that'll befall him? The strength the courage just amazing! The cut to black had me confused, especially bc I don't know who the last guy was, but the glimmering in his eyes?? You KNOW.
h . ad well, this is based on a Chinese novel called Mo Dao Zu Shi (grandmaster of demonic cultivation). It’s a great story full of action and drama...and this is a very crucial part of the history. The English translation of the novel is available online for free. So give it a try, it’s worth the time.
In case you haven’t had a chance to read the novel yet (which, 10/10’would recommend since that’s what this video is specifically based off of) The “Father” is actually his dad’s best friend, Jiang Fengmian, who takes Wei Wuxian (our protagonist) in when he’s around 9 years old! The “mother” is Jiang Fengmian’s daughter, Jiang Yanli, who is older than Wei Wuxian and her little brother Jiang Cheng! She’s a nurturing and calming presence in Wei Wuxian’s life and the closest thing he has to a mother, since both his parents died when he was young. Also the other little boy? Jiang Cheng- you see him at the 1:32 mark! The man at the end- his name is Lan Zhan/Lan Wangji! For the record this novel has a canon gay couple, and it does have explicit sexual content after ch. 90 - not every chapter but like thats around when it becomes a bit more present! But its a fun story and I adore it to shreds.
So i've never heard of MDZS before and have to thank you for introducing me to it since i've recently started watching it and so far am loving it Also great video of course, ended up rewatching it several times
There's the drama too and it's amazing, there are some differences but they are both amazing, the drama is called the untamed and , unlike the donghua, is complete.

The moment I saw Jiang Yanli's spirit hug Wei Ying I burst into tears! This is so well done and I love all of the emotions that Wei Ying shows. And then, we see Lan Zhan crying at the end! Hurts so bad, you did a good job.
,, fear will be my enemy". I've always thought that the reason for him being able to control everything was because he always knew what to do, he was calm and collected. When he finally snapped and was overwhelmed by feelings, corpses went against him. Layer he was only more guilty and overhelmed, he didn't stop it and couldn't do anything. Finally he went into madness
Omgggggg i got goosebumps from the part he cut off his hair till the end and then Wang Ji with his wounds just finished me and I left sobbing... Amazing work!
how did it only just hit me? the sheer musicality of this animatic. Like, EVERRRYTHINGG????? moves with the beat, drums or piano. just omggggg WELL DONE!
at the part where in the crowd Jiang Cheng had the face which made my heart churn in pain JC probably didn't want him to be a monster and where both groups are about to battle JC's expression really hurt me and with the song it really hit hard.
holy shit this is so good aksdf the symbolism when he cut his hair akdflk I cannot put how good this is into words but gosh I can guarantee I won't be able to get this animatic out of my head
Two years later and this still hurts me so bad. I'm glad that MDZS is in mainstream rn so I'm not the only one hurt HAHAHAHAHAHA Omw to reread! Good luck to the newbies
Just realized, that at 0:35 wwx is hovering over the jiang bell (I dunno if it’s supposed to be the one made for Jin ling or his own, but it’s a jiang bell) and when he reaches for it “fear will your enemy and death it’s consequence” plays and the candle flame hovers right over where his golden core would be. It’s just super small symbolism that I didn’t notice until now, the like hundredth rewatch. I feel like it’s a little bit of him wanting to reach out to jc and being unable to without acknowledging the golden core situation. And then he walks away from the things representing his family and his golden core willingly, just like he did to the actual things. The candle placement,,, hurts.

I was like holy cow when wei wuxian cut his hair with the sword because he looked so different and i cried when it showed clan leader Jiang and yanli
"is the thing they see the thing I have to be" dude that fucking hurt
SPOILER AHEAD!
in the novel it was three months after JYL's death that WWX is finally killed, supposedly because his power backfired on him but the implication (or popular headcanon) is that it was suicide - he hated himself so much that his puppets turned on him, just like how they turned on JZS...
Adding more cause I haven’t stopped watching this yet-
So!
This had so many tight scenes but the "in a cage" is probably my favourite
Like the energy was just so fucking good I keep repeating that scene. Like the pulse going off is just * chefs kiss*
BRO WHAT I LITERALLY CRIED WHEN JIANG FENGMIAN CAME OUT BUT THEN YOU HIT MW WITH YANLI????? IM DEVASTATED!!!
Fun fact:
I cried at 4:00 am watching this because i felt the emotions Wei Wuxian is feeling---
i am crying and it's just 8 pm
I’m crying so hard rn
holy shit. tears in my eyes from the 'father you know what's best for me' part until the end........ scrteaming and yelling and ripping with blood in my teeth. oh my god you ever see an animatic that's So
this video sent me on a spiral of:
- oh wow cool animatic with cool story, gonna go find out the title
- oh dang, the animations pretty good- there's a manhua version?
- wowee read the manhua and watched the whole animation in 2 days
- oh the novel? uh yes please
its been 3 days since I first found this animatic and I'm already halfway through the novel, finished the animation version, watched numerous clips from the audio drama, am on episode 2 od the drama (the untamed), and finished reading up to chapter 150 of the manhua.
im
i need my brain to chill the frick frack paddy wack out
Everybody was the same as you... I read the novel nonstop for days barely slept, watched the whole donghua, watched the whole show Untamed in a matter of days and so on... this story just doesn't let u go
REST FRIEND
Omg same. After watching this video some weeks ago I'm halfway thru the donghua , the live-action, AND the novel. I'd read the manhua too but I'm trying to pace myself
@@deltaweathers where did u read the novel?
@@adriblossom5208 I'm reading the fan translated ver on Exiled Rebels (for free online! just search them up) since I'm still saving up for the official English novels
When he cut his hair I gasped and had to replay the scene just to make sure I didn't imagine it. I know just enough to know that this is serious business and he considers himself dead.
Me, watching this before reading MDZS: wow, this is a really well done animatic- very nice
Me, watching this after reading MDZS: *incoherent sobbing*
This hurts every single time. Wei WuXian's death is one of the most tragic things I've experienced in fiction. It never stops hurting.
This is one of the most beautiful MDZS animatic I have seen in years...no, one the most amazing animatics in all fandoms that I have seen, is gorgeaus!!! I love it!! Thank you so much for show this to us.
“Bring back the sun” *Shows the Wens*
Lan Wangji at the end!!! Literally everything in this animatic!!!! (Screams)
Hey OP thats my /heart/ thanks
It’s been four years…I still come back to see this masterpiece
Oof, that hit at the end with Lan Zhan... You did a beautiful job on this! I can only imagine the work this must have taken. Your visual storytelling is really impressive, particularly with facial expressions. I was really drawn to how every shot of Jiang Cheng showed such pained conflict between his duty as clan leader and actually leading the hunt for his own brother.
TRU I AGREE SO HARD
I also loved the shots of Jiang Cheng. The poor thing :(
Oh my god I've found this again, I saw this a long while ago before I knew about mdzs and just never looked into what this was about?? and NOW I read and watched it, I can actually *appreciate this* like it deserves
IM CRYING IN MY MATH CLASS HOW FUCKING DARE YOU
(Oh my god this is so good. I was holding out until the very end, but then the cut to black and just seeing LWJ slowly crying, sitting on his own with his bandaged wounds-that got me man)
me rewatching this after 2 years and can I say that WWX SLAYED THAT HAIRCUT? go boyyyyyy
@@eri2408 I will! Thank you for telling me the name!
In case you haven’t had a chance to read the novel yet (which, 10/10’would recommend since that’s what this video is specifically based off of)
The “Father” is actually his dad’s best friend, Jiang Fengmian, who takes Wei Wuxian (our protagonist) in when he’s around 9 years old!
But its a fun story and I adore it to shreds.
h . ad the last part.... it hurts even more after reading the novel
@@Psychoinnocent I can't believe you just called mo dao zu shi story fun ^^
This is one of the best animatics I’ve ever watched in my life. Now I really want a sequel
So i've never heard of MDZS before and have to thank you for introducing me to it since i've recently started watching it and so far am loving it
Also great video of course, ended up rewatching it several times
There's the drama too and it's amazing, there are some differences but they are both amazing, the drama is called the untamed and , unlike the donghua, is complete.
There is also a novel it was all originally based off of
And there is also audio drama episodes, some of which are extra scenes
And there is also a Manhwa, if you want to see it in images. They made a new chibi series too xD
In conclusion there is:
-A Novel called "Mo Dao Zu Shi" (The original)
-A drama series that is complete called "The Untamed"
-A Donghua incomplete called "Mo Dao Zu Shi" (Donghua is chinese anime)
-A chibi series that are pretty new
-A Manhwa, I think it is complete.
-And Audio Dramas, there are some extra things.
In conclusion, it has a looooot of things xD
Oh, and, as you can see, there is the principal couple. it is gay ¿? And I warn you about the Incense Burner extras, those are weird af xdxd
to quote jake peralta: "cHILLS, LITERAL CHILLS"
i cant get enough of this animatic, ive watched this so much-
I will never ever get over this video
It lives in he head rent free 24/7
AA I LOVE THIS SO MUCHHH! My poor babyyy noooo, you're not a monster
EVERYONE NEEDED TO EAT A FUCKING SNICKERS YESUS. Im just glad the poor boy got his happily ever after the second time
This video is the reason im going back to rewatch mdzs.
This deserves millions of views oh my god- every MDZS fan needs to see this masterpiece. You just turned this into Wei Wuxian’s song
BROOOO BROOOO THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE THING THIS IS SO AMAZING WTF I WASNT EXPECTING IT TO GO SO HARD BUT IT DID AND IM FLOORED SJJDKSKSKS AMAZING AMAZING IM LOSING MY MINDDDD
I-I thought I finally got over it but then when it cut to Lan Zhan I just found myself hurting again like...damn. This is so powerful and heart breaking. My heart aches seeing Wei Wuxian fighting with Jiang Cheng and everyone all alone like...no my poor baby
your mastery over the colouring in this whole animatic is staggering
wwx reaching for the yunmeng clarity bell, jc leading the siege to the burial mounds, wwx hallucinating about jfm and jyl, lwj crying in the end and the portrayal of wwx’s emotions…this video is so incredible !!!
Bro that's one of the best mdzs animations that I already saw
To this Day
I thank the algorithm for showing me this animatic because of it I read the whole novel and fell in love with it
Next is to read Heavenly Official
Him cutting his hair was such a powerful moment!!
It’s nice seeing the touch of Wei Ying cutting his hair! As a Chinese I’m really happy more people are getting interested in the ancient culture of Chinese so it’s nice
I just want to say this animatic was the thing that finally convinced me to start MDZS a year ago, and thank you because it’s the most obsessed I’ve ever been with a story and fandom
When i first watched this, i didnt know anything about MDZS
But now after watching the Donghua S2 and read half of the novel i can only watch in tears
I cry like a baby every single time man
Two years later and this still hurts me so bad.
I'm glad that MDZS is in mainstream rn so I'm not the only one hurt HAHAHAHAHAHA
Omw to reread! Good luck to the newbies
lan zhan crying at the end completly broke me TToTT
WHYYYYYYYY I WAS SO INVESTED IN WHAT WAS HAPPENING I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE THAT THE VIDEO WAS ENDING AND NOW I FEEL EMPTY. I CNAT. THIS IS SO SAD, I NEED A ANOTHER PART TO THIS WHERE WWX GETS A HAPPY ENDING PELASE IM BEGGING YOU. THE ART WAS AMAZING by the way. The way you show emotion? Immaculate. The flow? Beautiful. The background? Fucking fantastic. Everything was perfect. The music choice was perfect. How the father and mother part was so good. That part where he cuts his hair was amazing. The little doll reminded me of Milan and just how devastating that last little bit was just ....*chefs kiss*
This is honestly one of the best animatics ive seen. The song choice is perfect for wwx and the art is so we'll drawn. 10/10 watched this at least 8 times
i am shattered this is SO GOOD I HURT XD the lyrics fit so well and the expressions? are so perfect?? and wwx cutting his hair and everyones expressions at the final fight and lwj at the end i just,,, i need a moment i love this so much amazing work op the pacing is gorgeous
Ive never heard of MDZS before but I am so totslly looking for the books the movies everythjng! I wanna watch thiiiis!
It's the symbolism behind the cutting of his hair for me.
God, I came here not knowing what this was, then wanting to know more I watched the anime version of this.
Thank you so much for showing me something great. Re-watching it now has such a different feel. Honestly can say this may be a top ten of mine now.
this my favorite thing i've ever watched, the amount i have it on repeat
the editing?? the expressions!!?? the storytelling!?1? you nailed everything. I adore practically every second of this video and admire all of the hard work you put into this, thank you.
This is freaking AMAZING 😍😍, damn Wei Wuxian with short hair looks good. Your Animation is amazing and so is your drawing.
1:07 ARE YOU KIDDING ME THE RIPPLES WERE DONE SO WELL 💯💯💯
Okay I'm throwing hands with whoever hit that dislike button, this video is an absolute masterpiece. You did such a great job with details and making sure we see how each of the characters feel about this siege, and the fact that LWJ wasn't there but really FELT when WWX died, and the turmoil in JC eyes, and the fight or flight of WWX it all just... wow
I'M SO MAD. THAT I JUST DISCOVERED THIS NOW AND NOT EARLIER. F*CK THIS IS GOOD.
THE STORYBOARDS. THE BACKGROUNDS. THE MOVEMENT AND SMOOTHNESS OF THE ANIMATION. THE CHARACTER DESINGS.
AND THE STYLE.
Amazing. Beautiful. Heartbreaking.
Just stopping in to say that a few hours ago this video popped up, and now I am caught up on a FANTASTIC series I hadn't heard of! Thank you!!!!
i’m not crying..... i just got something in both of my eyes
I love this!!!! I love the symbolism of wei ying cutting his hair which is him freeing himself from his past, but other's will see it as disgraceful (which is a running theme of people not understanding why he choses the actions he takes). Great job!
THAT LAST SCENE OF LAN ZHAN KILLED ME
You have put me down a rabbit hole how dare you. I can’t stop watching 😭
When he cut his hair I swear I almost cried. This hurts me, but in a way that I want to watch it repeatedly? But yeah, it’s great!
that is so perfect im crying💔
Is amazing how this song fits perfectly with Wei Ying's situation 😯😟😭💔
Watching the video for the thousandth time 👍🏻
This fandom can be either super depressing or super comedic, there is no in-between.
AAAGGHHHHH THE EMOTION, THE ART, THE ANIMATION, THE FL O W ITS ALL SO WELL DONE IVE REWATCHED THIS TWICE AND I STILL CANT GET ENOUGH
Maaaaaaaan, this is so good. I was already in awe and the last few seconds added salt to the wound.
Your designs for the characters are so gorgeous!! I don't know what it is about them, but I had to pause on like every frame of wwx and be like... wtf this is the perfect wwx??? Also that moving shot of all the Wens _killed_ me. It flowed so perfectly, I had to watch it like 10 times lol
THIS NEEDED SO MUCH WORK!!??? Literally can't describe how EPIC this looks!!! The every movement, frame, every second it's all PERFECT and they fit together in such harmony with the song!! AAAA
This was my discovering of MoDaoZuShi, which lead me into a rabbit hole of watching everything I could and reading the novel. My absolute favorite thing ever!
Always a classic
I was so obsessed with your animatic that I finally decided to watch MDZS. And I regret nothing.
So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing your work. I loved it
I am once again crying over this animatic
This is your SECOND animatic? YOUR A FREAKING LEGEND!!!! 😱👏👏👏👏
The number of times I have watched and rewatched this 😅😅
Me too 🥹
This is my favourite animatic representation of the Mdzs storyline itself. I am so gretful for you making this... I started watching all of the Mdzs/The Untamed as well as reading it and I love it. My favourite anime/manga/live action so far. Love and live for this!!! 😭😭
i keep coming back to this
