CCTV Camera Lens - Why Iv changed mine from 4mm to 2.8mm Hikvision

- *** Please note, slight mistake in the video for these Cameras the FOV is as follows:
2.8mm = 102 degree vertical
4mm = 78 degree vertical
6mm = 50 degree vertical
I put this quick video together to help others learn from my mistake with choosing the right lens for your Hikvision CCTV system.

Great video. Very informative. Making the right choice between 2.8/4/6mm is very important. I agree that for residential stuff, with 16:9 widescreen cams (e.g. 4MP, 4K), 2.8 is usually the most useful. That said, while not great for entertainment, the 4:3 aspect ratio stuff (e.g. 6MP) works a lot better for video surveillance. Regrettably, all the best stuff comes in widescreen lately because it dovetails with the entertainment format.
Been using hikvision for about 5 years. Initially 4mm on 4mp cameras on the front and side. Decided to go for 2.8mm and 8mp camera on front to see everything coming towards house. The wider angle looks like it comes from further/back but with the higher megapixel you can offset that by zooming in further without losing detail.
Yours looks far better with that angle as well 👍
I would say not unless you have the vari focal ones. The 2.8mm is zoomed out slightly to achieve the field of view.
@@DIYJourney1 that’s why it’s better to go higher with the megapixel on a 2.8 if you can. From the angle on my 4mp 4mm with passing vehicles on road if I paused the video at a certain angle and approach I could use digital zoom and just about read the number plate.
With the 2.8mm 8mp same position although it gives the look of set further back to give the wider angle I can digitally zoom in and pick out the number plate no problem.
Hey man.. hows the cameras goin on so far? Any signs of degradation? So uve been using it for abt 7 years now?
@@rudy9895 hi, I’ve had no degradation I’m still running one of my original 4 mp cameras in the garden from back in 2016 still works great. As I’ve increased the mega pixel on 3 of my other cameras to 8 mp the nvr runs them normal but hikvision updates the nvr software to 4.0 and that’s where it became a problem. My 2nd nvr is a k series and it was terrible on 4.0 so reverted back to the original software.
If you’re going down the nvr route on hikvision make sure you get the newest nvr in the price range.
That’s the only problem I’ve had. The original 2016 76** nvr was struggling with the higher mp cameras so about 3 years ago purchased the k series but what I thought was the best at the time wasn’t and is totally underpowered to handle the new software and the new features in the cameras.
As an installer for over 15 years my best advice to anyone is your better off installing two cameras in larger areas in distinct positions than trying to get one camera to capture everything
Totally agree and is exactly what I have on my front albeit, not a large area depending how that is defined.
What is face recognition up to 10m with a 2.8 at 5Mp camera?
With the colorvu cameras with built in audio, how are the audio feeds ran back to the NvR.? Does the audio also work over the same cat6 cable. Or does one need a separate run of Coax or Audio Cables
Its runs over the same cat5 or 6 cable. I have a non colorvu audio one and thats how it runs.
Nice house. Beautiful history I can imagine.
It may surprise you, that its only 12 years old
@@DIYJourney1 Amazing stone work. Looks like fantastic workmanship. Had me fooled it was 100+ years old.
Next you'll probably reply and tell me its a fake stone too. Lol
Haha no real local stone. The garden project Im currently doing, has been interesting digging out all sorts of tools and part of previous buildings etc
Just wondering how you are getting on with your system, looking for one myself but Hikvision and others get slated on trust pilot?
Iv had various types of Hikvision camera set ups for the last 6 years. They are great and in my opinion the best option on the market.
Do you use the hikvision bases that they sell separately, or is that just the base that’s on the camera from the box??
I just use what is supplied and manage to hide the plugs either within the wall (have to make sure you can access them after installation). Ideally you should use the junction boxes, I just don’t like the look and have only used where I need to stand the camera off of the wall further.
@@DIYJourney1 do you think mounting the camera onto the junction box is a good idea? I have junction boxes that fairly big and could easily have the mount of the camera attached onto it directly. Great content btw!
They should be mounted to the Hikvision junction boxes. Thank you
Appreciate your help
No problem
Great video
I need cameras for the house but I need something that gives me good night time vision as we have no external lights what would you suggest to what's yours like at night
Yes, very good night time image. If you either head over to my Instagram account newbuild_diy_journey or drop me an email I can provide examples. Hope that helps.
@@DIYJourney1 ta will do
Bit of advice from a police detective in New York. Fix your lighting problem first. While cameras are great, good lighting has greater potential for deterrence. I've been through the process of taking video to make arrests, both on the job and via doing camera work as a side business. The perps on the video have already sold your stuff by the time they are caught. Depending on your state, you may end up having to take 5-10 days off from work to attend every hearing. If you get lucky, they are ordered to pay restitution, $20/mo for however many years it takes. Lighting/deterrence is the first priority.
@@ILruffian Theres nothing to fix the lighting is not broke we are in the country and the person don't want lights on
@@maryellis3661 Prob too late for you but may help others, Hikvision colorvu cameras is what you need/needed. like daytime in pitch black. Also if anyone is after any fantastic floodlights , these things are half the size and miles brighter , both at 50w, www.any-lamp.co.uk/ledvance-led-floodlight-50w-3000k-5250lm-ip65-black-symmetrical-replaces-100w?qcd=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAwMP9BRCzARIsAPWTJ_HV9-DxjlFRHzzb7mA3uATbr_C9K8WWK-7Euj51FRseS8ewUvjcAhoaAsTkEALw_wcB . in comparison to the screwfix 50w lap.
I'm in the market for a new cctv system and Hikvision was on top of the list until I realised you had to be trade to purchase. Where did you get the kit from?
I have a account with a distributor. If you drop me a message, over on Instagram, I have a brand new system available if its suitable.
Just Amazon some amcrest ip or analog cams
I have been looking at the reolink systems , on paper they look good ….might be worth a punt.
Huge difference.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but can you have sound on these cameras or similar setups? Also if you have 8 cameras say, and want to playback the sound from just one camera can you listen back to the sound picked up from them all individually ?
Not a daft question at all, I dont believe these specific cameras have mics built in, I would have to check. I know some definitley do. I know you can get mics for them.
Yes they have microphones and you can choose to record sound and vision in the nvr
It depends which cameras you have.
The turret DS-2CD2347G1-LU has built in microphone
Thats correct, my particular cameras (DS-2CD2385G1-I) do not, it has to be an external mic. Hope this helps.
Where did you purchase your stuff from and whats the cost roughly
Hi, mine were purchased from DVS Ltd, they are around £150 per camera and £150-£300 depending what nvr and hard drive you go for.
Thanks a lot.
Great video, where do you buy your stuff?
Great video! Question, why didn't you mount the camera in the other corner above your door so you can see who is walking up to your front door? Now a big part of the view is taken by the wall/garage doors and someone can come up to your garage door with his back towards the camera.
I have other cameras covering that area from both sides.
Looks brighter
The brightness is simply a setting alteration. The image is identical on both cameras
just fitted 2.8 but its down the side of a house and picking up too much wall quarter of the screen is wall gonna try change lenses
4mm will improve that, certainly, the higher the mm number the more direct. Just note you wont see objects that are close to the camera.
@@DIYJourney1 yeah that's my problem keeping the gate in view but losing the side of the house
Flip camera to corridor mode and it will get rid of too much wall.
@@paulmoor3799 Corridor mode on Hikvision cameras?
Great video , has armed me with more information on lens types before a purchase. Have been looking at the 4k reolinks mainly and hikvision systems . Is there any type of wired system that you know of that works with alexa ? I have show 8 so may just get a eufy wired smart doorbell for that but would have like to incorporated the nvr and show together. Anyway thanks and keep the videos coming.
Great video helpful
Glad it was helpful!
I find the 2.8mm turret your using can’t zoom in past 2 x optical without going all pixelated unlike the 4mm you get much more digital zoom.
Sussexperformance Its very dependant on what your wanting to achieve and what you need to view, with a practicality of not having multiple cameras, on my phone and 4k viewing I dont have an issue with zooming and seeing the needed detail. Lower megapixel I have found that.
Thank you that is very helpful. Can you post who your supplier was?
I buy from DVS in the uk
@@DIYJourney1 thanks I'll give them a go👍👍👍
@@DIYJourney1 DVS ltd to get a price you have to login and be a CCTV distributor???
3.6mm looks like a good compromise between 2.8 and 4mm. I find 4mm doesn't quite give enough for the average home when mounted near a front door
Do they sell 3.6mm ones?
@@DIYJourney1 All my Dahua are 3.6mm :)
These aren’t Dahua cameras, hope that helps answer why they are 2.8mm & 4mm and not 3.6mm.
@@DIYJourney1 there are several other brandsthat do 3.6 :)
Thank you for letting me know…I meant do Hikvision sell 3.6mm (in these models) not other brands 🙂.
why change to black cameras?
I like black
Such a huge difference! From 4 to 2.8 mm lens
More and wider view is always valuable in term of security & safety
Thank you so much man 👍✔
Edit:
4 mm is also good, if someone want more zoom in, further view.
Plz upgrade ur microphone.
Your voice is very low
Not bad just 11mins to long
🤣🤣 Thank you for the engagement 👍🏻
