No joke, I'm working on a GTD Notion system for my team the last 3 days, found your channel yesterday and boom you come around with this one. That can't be a coincidence 😅 Do you have any tips on how to setup task dependencies without using a "Date" Property? We all have ADHD and don't do well with a deadline based systems 🤷🏻♀ Will start watching now. Thank you very much for your content! ✌🏻
Haha that is a coincidence lol. I guess you would just add a timeline view and turn on task dependencies and then instead of using the date property as a deadline it would be with a start and end date and time. So instead of task A needs to be done on the 3rd or something, it would be we're busy with task A from the 29th to the 3rd (add time if needed) and then with dependencies task A would need to be done before you can start with task B on the 4th for example. Hope this makes sense, basically turn on task dependencies and add a timeline view so you can add the dependencies by dragging and linking them together :)
@@chrisnotion Thank you so very much for your answer! I deeply appreciate 🙏 I'm still watching the video, there so many super useful things I'm implementing into my system. Great job! I've seen you offer calls. I will book myself in as soon as I hit a roadblock. Thanks again and have a great weekend! ✌
@@chrisnotion Fun fact: David Allen released a new book on GTD for Teams called "Team: How to get things done with others" this year. There are no videos on this on how to translate his new book to Notion. You could be the first 😉
Chris, all this is really very interesting, and as someone who loves Notion I would like to actually build this system. From a productivity point of view though I feel that one would spend too much time on the system itself rather than actually getting things done. If a task needs 5 minutes to do, I do it immediately. I don’t need to put it in the system, and if a task is senseless, why write it down only to delete it? I think my system is much simpler and better adapted to my personal needs.
@@Tnmyes One data base, 4 buttons: TASK, APPOINTMENT, EVENT, MEETING and 4 views: TODAY, TOMORROW, THIS WEEK, CALENDAR. I like to keep them all in Table views ( except the calendar of course).
I think this is covered in the GTD book. Idea is to basically dump everything from your brain in to an external system, and then you can decide how to handle those things. So it makes sense there. If you think of something later, you will probably know right away whether to delete it or keep it, so you might as well not write it down. But if you are just “emptying your brain” then it makes sense to just add everything to the system, and then go through them. Although it might also make sense to create some kind of database of ideas that you have, which you decided to delete.
I agree, personally I also work like this but this system would be more a place to just dump any sort of information into and get actionable items at the end, but of course it's not necessary that you have to do everything through this system, I personally don't but having a system like this to process information (for me it's mainly ideas) helps a lot. David Allen also talks about this in the GTD book
From productivity point of view you wish a spot to dump all ideas. From a digital organization point of view, you want something with information to keep track when you done it. That's why you dump all information.
Hi Chris, it is really impressive that you share the entire creation process of this template for free. Thank you! I havent watched the life OS video yet, so my questions may be addressed there, but could you tell me: 1. Is there a way to make it so that tasks associated with projects automatically trickle up to your inbox when you complete the previous task? When brainstorming projects, i like to think about and order all possible tasks ahead of time. I've been trying to figure out how to do this through my DIY projects database using sub items under projects but have not been able to figure it out. I'm envisioning a relationship between all actionable tasks associated with a project being linked to my inbox whereupon completion of one, the next listed task associated with the project shows up in my inbox, and I can then filter it through the GTD system. I have a lot of really long term projects that I like to make sure I'm making gradual progress on, and without some kind of automation to keep those next tasks popping up in my system, I tend to forget about them. 2. Is there a way to set up reoccuring tasks that automatically pop up in the system? I'm thinking big & small time specific things, like giving the dogs their heartworm medicine, taking the recycling out for collection, filing and paying quarterly taxes, etc. 3. On a similar note - the tickler file & even someday/maybe list - can a auromation be created so that you can set a date to choose to be reminded of those items by having them show up in your inbox? It is nice to be reminded to review some of those big dreams and ideas regularly as well as have a way to have tasks that land in your inbox that are not currently actionable go to the tickler until a specific date and then show up in the inbox again when they are able to be acted upon. Going to watch the life OS video now. I'm still somewhat of a notion newbie - I realize that I've been using it in a somewhat limited capacity. Thinking I will just purchase your system if it addresses the above things since I can't wrap my brain around how to create it myself! 😅
Hi Chris! At 3:55 you say, "Unfortunately you can't carry the name over, like that would have been ideal." BecauseI'm using a GTD template which uses only one database- and that is "Stuff"- everything else- inbox, action items/tasks, projects, etc is merely a filtered view of that singular database, not its own database outright. Thus I have that particular functionality- the names are naturally retained between views. I think I'd dislike the repetetive labor of manuallly reentering the names of my inbox items elsewhere, such as in "projects". You say you have set up "projects" as its own database. At 13:15 you also indicate there are advantages to setting up the non-actionables as 3 separate databases which you prefer over tagging (and I'm assuming generating alternate views based upon those tags) as you believe there are some advantages to doing it this way once you form relationships between them. Could you elaborate on this so I can understand your thinking process here? I'm just barely wrapping my head around this stuff myself. I'm considering some of your templates and really enjoying studying your youtube offerings. Thanks!
No, probably never will as it's my best selling product, or it might be in the form of a course, but no won't have any sort of tutorial for it in a while
