First Position Tutorial for Cello | How To Music | Sarah Joy

- I hope today's tutorial helps! I know that a lot of beginner cellists struggle with understanding how finger placement works. In this tutorial, I don't talk about anything outside of first position. Fortunately, most beginner cello pieces stay within this position, so you shouldn't have any problems. :) Let me know if you have any further questions!

I bought a cello today. Your videos are good. Thank you.
Congratulations! I hope you enjoy your new instrument. :)
thank you. I play piano but I may have found a new love; just as well they have somethings in common ..lol
Lynkevmusic man just please can you help me
Hey me too!
I play guitar but cello is alot harder
I’ve been playing the cello over 20 years but I am still watching this video!
pls don't scare me XDD
I was wondering if you could make a playlist with all your cello tutorials in order? It would be very handy and helpful. It’s hard finding them because I’m using my phone. Thank you.
Sarah thanks a lot for caring about us little guys. can't wait for us to start our lessons again.
Me too!
I haven't even bought my cello yet but this is helpful and motivating for getting started. Thanks for posting.
Do not ever stop. A mistake ive made too often
@@johncuscaden2021 i quit for 2 years and going back into it now not remembering much on how to play really sucks
I've been playing the violin for 7 years and I just started teaching myself the cello too. The new fingerings have been the hardest part to learn and this video was very helpful.
What clef does cello normally read in? I play violin as well but I’m transitioning into cello soon and I feel like reading the notes in a different clef will be hard :’)
@@walnut5203 The bass clef
@@morrigandanae ah alright time to learn it then haha
Thank you so much. I just got my cello on Friday and I really want to learn how to be good at cello. You really helped me 😁
so helpful! Thanks for this series.
Thank you for this. I am a flutist and have played the piano since childhood (and taught both.) I recently had my mother's cello restored which I think her parents bought for her in about 1932. So, I'm deciding whether or not to try to play the cello. It looks like a daunting process which a new instrument always is. I really appreciate watching your videos because they give me an idea of what might lie ahead.
When I started with the Cello about a year ago, I didn't really hear the difference between slightly too flat, slightly too sharp or right on the note. I did hear it in comparison with another note, so I started by playing an open string and then putting down finger 1. Slightly off the right spot was easier for me to hear, that way.
In time, my hearing became better again, and it became easier to distinguish between slightly off and right on the spot, so I no longer need to play the open string now.
That's good advice!
Hi there, I'm now very interested in learning how to play a Cello. However, I just want to play Cello with fingers (for Jazz music), not with a tick (sorry I don't know how to call it). So can you please give me some advice how to learn playing a Cello?
i think you mean double bass
Oh thank you, I just searched "double bass" like you suggested. I found this clip: ua-cam.com/video/QupB4NN8fI0/v-deo.html However, he still use the tick. I would like to use fingers only.
either double bass and cello are possible to play by finger, it is one of the techniques.
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm a violin player and want to try the cello but haven't secured a teacher quite yet. Your tutorials have given me a lot of good food for thought. Best wishes!
I'm glad my videos can help, and hopefully, you'll find a good teacher soon!
Thank you. I found your ‘finding the ‘A’ very beneficial.
What you do is beautiful. I wish you all the best with your craft.
Hi Sarah, I am new to cello. I have only been taking lessons for a few months- but have been pouring through your video's before/after class to help solidify things. Thank you so much- they are very helpful!!
I'm so glad they can be helpful!
So relaxing.. and you have a lovely house!
just started playing cello yesterday. thanks for your help and inspiration..
Hi Sarah, i've just started playing cello and I watch your tutorials. Even made a playlist with all the important video's. I have learned the first finger from my teacher. She says I'm doing Well and hear the notes clear. I practice from the books cello time joggers and Suzuki school cello. This is so much fun! Greetings from belgium. A new cellist is Born.
Awesome!! That is so exciting that I get to be a part of your cello journey. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Texas. :)
Awesome, thank you so much! Very useful!
Also I have a fifth line which is very useful (especially with high melodies on the A string, which can even go beyond it a little). This plays the same note as the next open string. When alternating two adjacent notes quickly and one is an open string it is easier to just play it on one string instead of two. And it is a quick way to check all of your strings are in tune with each other.
Great vid. Much more relatable than the poncy English bloke, haha... We got a free Cello yesterday and I'm gonna be a pro at making the notes flat in no time now!
Obrigado por sua aulas são muito boa tenho aprendido muito através de seus tutoriais Deus te abençoe
I played the cello for years! Into my first year of college.....just picked it back up again almost 20 years later!.. I've been dreaming about it....
Enjoyed this lesson and now am beginning to understand the fingerboard more. I am new at this and trying my best.
Great!! You'll get it :)
I just purchased a marker from amazon and a tuner. I'm working on the two octave C major scale. I can't believe this. I want to venture further Sarah. jejeje
This was super helpful!
What a clever exercise. 🌹
Thx for helping me learn how to play the cello
Aha! So as a violinist I was assuming the fingering was the same. No wonder its been so hard!! Its all starting to make sense!
Great Tutoring, I am waiting to by a Cello, I want to see how to play. Pro and Cons. Good better than others I watched.😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍
Playing one note with no reference? She assumes we have perfect pitch. I'll take that as a compliment.
Thank you for your tutorial video's. I recently had my first cello lesson, but my teacher is on a three week holiday now.
So in the meantime I wanted to get a lot of practice in, and your video's are very helpful! (:
Awesome! Glad they can help!
First - thanks for a great beginner video. My wife and I ordered our 1st cello. Rarin' to go. Now - tapes... I am a guitar player. The tapes may be a bad influence on some, but for me I need position visuals to start. Then off they go. They shouldn't be a crutch - just a map.
found a cello for 100 bucks on craigslist, and now i've subscribed :D
It's like your videos are aligning with where I'm at right now 😁😁
Haha cool!
I really enjoyed the video =D
Thank you, very COOL teacher!!
helpful, thank you!
Very easy to follow
Thank you so much for your Videos!
Hi Vanessa! I'm happy to help. Thanks for watching them. :)
Thank you, Sarah!
Of course! :)
Bravo, thank you
Im a violinist but that explanation of flats and sharp helped me differentiate them
Awesome, happy to help!
great video for begginers!
Same I got a cello from my middle school because I started orchestra
I really enjoy your videos!
Thanks Carlos!
I think I will put the 1st Finger-Positioning in my "techniques" practice. I often go to flat
As a cellist beginner, I wanted to thank you for this video and for the tips !
I’m glad that it can help you! Thank you for watching!
Hi Sarah, thank you very much for the video. I like your pace and patience in explaining everything especially the muscle memory part. So my question is that why pianos and cellos both have Do re me fa so la xi sounds. They are two very different instruments but why they ‘coincidentally’ produce similar sound?? #I am a piano beginner
hi sarah, i'm just learning (in my mid-50's) and your lessons are the best. however, i don't see an order. is there a table of contents of your lessons? thank you
Your videos are very good but do have a video on running major key scales on the Cello ?
Cool thank you for sharing
The people who disliked are the people who always use their first finger, the anger finger
thankyou for this❤️
Well thank you for watching!
Thank you
Very good mam nice for tutorial
Hi Sarah!
I am a very beginner cellist. I am having trouble keeping my bigger pinkie joint from collapsing. I think that part of this is because my fingers can’t spread very far. Do you have any tips for either issue?
Thanks so much!
I know it's very late to answer but it could be useful for other people. My cello teacher made me buy a 4/4 cello instead of a 3/4 which would have been better for my little hands. The first months of practice I had a champagne cork between my forefinger and middle finger to stretch them. And it did work! It's uncomfortable at first but it helps a great lot when learning how to position the left hand on the instrument.
Curve your fingers more.
C sharp and D flat are the same note?
Is that true across all music? How did I never notice that before.
Mind blown. lol. I am a simple an. Thank you.
Yes! you can learn more about reading music on UA-cam as well.
A G flat scale...
Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Eb F Gb !
Wait a minute, C flat??!?
@@ALoonwolf Cb is the same as B natural lol
Thanks for this lesson!! Do you recommend some specific kind of tape?
Thank you for sharing with us. My questions are 1. How far down the finger board do you measure to put the first tape and what is the measurement interval fir the second etc. and 2. My D string makes an UN even sound. How do I fix it? Thanks.
Im waiting for the other position....thank you so much!!!
Do I still not have 4th up?? I'll get to that if I haven't yet.
Which Songs would be great for a beginner? I'm going to buy a Cello next month and I've never played a Cello before, so Im Looking for some good beginner Songs.
I played the cello in high school but stoped after, i took it out and realised its too small so bought a fullsize, any tips for starting i feel i forgot alot
4:38... don't play a bad note so you know it's bad. Focus on what to do. When right notes are engrained you will automatically know when you're off.
Listened to an older anime song earlier with a cello and out of curiosity thought I'd see how they work, 1 cool the notes work like a guitar, going up as you go down the neck. And 2 that muscle memory trick is actually a very cool idea.
Nice, I bought a cello a long time ago when i was on college, quarantine it's the best time toretake this. Any tips for the pain on the left hand of holding the strings ?
What's worse for me is the cramping in the right hand holding the bow! That muscle between my thumb and forefinger gets tired so fast. Might have something to do with how little I write on paper, I'm not sure. I'd love tips on strengthening both hands!
I have played piano for 10 years of my life and I’ve always wanted to play a cello.. I just ordered my first cello (an electric) and I’m so excited to start learning. I just hope I can get good at it because I will be teaching myself. No lessons. I hope your videos may help me you’re extremely good at this instrument. Thank you
That's great!! I hope you enjoy the learning process :)
Hows your progress so far
Ooh
hey! do you know how to play A Sharp and Natural on the A string by any chance? my music sheet is killing me lol and if you could help it would be very much appreciated :)
Hello, I've been learning the cello for about 9 months now. I need to be grade 4 by next August (I know it's crazy!!!!), but I was wondering if you could do a video on third position and shifting, this would be a great help because I really need help with this. By the way I need to be grade 4 on cello to study higher music in my next year in school (Scottish school), my music teacher who used to be a concert cellist said I can do it but I really do need help with shifting. It would be a huge help thanks
Shifting is tough! I don't remember what exactly is in this video, but it might be able to help you: ua-cam.com/video/Z-HGREGJe1o/v-deo.html
Kerr Mclean how long did you take lessons before you did Grade 2? I need to be grade 2 because I'm doing music gcse, and I'm hoping to start cello lessons next year.
Ofunne Mordi well I had lesson off of a violin teacher but I didnt do grade 1 or two. I'm doing my grade 3 in June. But I've been learning for 1 to year and 3 months
But I would say if you get lesson for 7-8 months and your practice as much as you can(good practice though) grade two is achievable probably grade 3 if you get a good teacher.
Kerr Mclean Thanks.
Wait so do you keep your fingers on the notes above when you play the higher notes? Like do you keep on fingers 1, 2 and 3 on when you use your 4th finger to play the C on the a-string?
When you're playing a note on the 4th finger, using your 1st, 2nd or 3rd finger will not make a difference.
when would be a good time to start to play and practice without your tapes?
+Ayric Fetty Whenever you've been playing in tune with tapes for a while, then take them off and see what happens.
Hello I am looking for the stripes on your cello, but i can not find it in germany. I have an 7/8 Cello.
Can you help me. Greetings Sabine
I don't know. I clicked on this video to learn to be a better player. I ended up gushing over her beauty didn't understand a thing 😭
Do you think that tape helps or not ?? Because once you take it off ...
I know.. I have mixed feelings on that topic.
vraiment jolie j'aime beaucoup
Do you have private lessons in Houston Texas
+Blake and Andrew No, but I do teach over Skype. :) Just email me at sarahjoyrecordings@gmail.com if you're interested.
Hi Carah, what do you think bout playing cello left handed?
I wouldn't know. I've never tried it, and I've never seen anyone else try it. Haha
I PLAY LEFT HANDED
Play your mistakes and learn that they are wrong.
I love this advice... "keep friends close, and enemies closer" Very similar advice
How long should I practice a day I'm 63 and just beginning 🤔
Great video. Of course, you do know that the word music is a noun, not a verb, right?
Thank you! My son has been playing for three years now and still has tape on his cello. He doesn't look often but just started working more in 4th position. Is this normal?
+T Coleman Yeah, I'd say he's on track! Every student learns differently at different paces, but that sounds good.
Thank you so much, we were a bit worried.
hi! Could you make a tutorial on how to put that tape on the cello and is that the basic tape position?
Muhammad Fusenig oh really.. oops! Thanks for saying anyway!
Hope it helps :)
Sarah Joy I checked it out and thank you for the video. I did really helped me!
I have a dumb question so sorry but when you place the tapes on the fingerboard can you remove them without having the fingerboard sticky and messed up?
I've never been able to avoid that problem completely. Usually it just takes patient (and gentle) scrubbing with a soft cloth afterwards.
I do however like the muscle memory game!
Enharmonics work in equal-temperamental tuning, but not in well-temperamental tuning. I think I have that right.
Do you give private on line lessons?
how do you measure for the tapes
I’ve never measured. When I was little, my teacher did it for me and I know she just did it by ear. I know they have stick-on template sort of things, but I would recommend using a tuner.
Can you please do a cover of this song : Kučka - Honey (Medasin Remix)
please !!!
A tip: you can watch movies on Flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Armando Crew Yup, been watching on Flixzone for since december myself :D
Hey Sarah I was hoping maybe you could give me a lesson over Skype next Monday is that possible?
Your really pretty
Aw! Why thank you!
@@sarahjoyrecordings I think so too!
You are fantastically beautiful, hands down ☺️
Can you please suggest like 2-3 good cellos for beginners?
Rather than suggesting brands, I would just recommend looking at sharmusic.com. :)
Sarah Joy thank you so much! I ll buy one and you ll be my first online teacher! God bless you :)
i like your videos but i have a little problem i don't understand A B C D E
i know DO RE MI FA SOL
my english is bad i hope you can understand me
Solfege (do, re, mi, etc...) is all about what key you are in, unless you are using "fixed do". If you are using fixed do, C is do, D is re, E is mi, and so on.
Hello, I have a quick question. By students, do you teach at a school or do you mean by your Skype lessons? By the way, I love your channel!
+PaxtonVids I used to teach in schools, but I prefer private lessons.
How exactly do u tell if it's sharp or flat without a tuner
+maame serwaa Awuah Over time your ear develops. :) But until then, it's good to use a tuner or drone.
Sarah Joy thank you ☺
NEW SUBSCRIBER HERE! I really enjoy your videos! I want to start playing the cello but I'm afraid I'm too old to develop a knack for it (I'm 21 btw).
Never too old! :) Most of my students are adults and they are doing very well!
Tooop
Whats the difference between violin and cello??
Well, the cello has a deeper tone and is a much larger instrument. But there are quite a few similarities in playing technique.
I've heard the recommendation that beginners should not not use tape to help them learn, because it hinders the progress long term when you get used to using your eyes instead of ears and hand coordination. What is your opinion to using aid tape vs not using it, despite the learning threshold becoming a bit higher? I'm not using tape, but its a bit frustrating not having a visual reference point. I do come from guitar, so I'm used to being able to "cheat" with visual aid.
+Wanessie I think using tape is just fine. :) I used it when I was learning, and it helped to develop my ear. Once my ear was more trustworthy, I took off the tapes. Past that point, the journey of refining your intonation goes on for the rest of your life.
Oh you put your fingers on the tape. I was looking at them like frets.
Does E mean E natural
Ameliah Chavez hope you don’t mind me popping in to answer: yes, E = E natural.
