I've been playing the violin for 7 years and I just started teaching myself the cello too. The new fingerings have been the hardest part to learn and this video was very helpful.
What clef does cello normally read in? I play violin as well but I’m transitioning into cello soon and I feel like reading the notes in a different clef will be hard :’)
Thank you for this. I am a flutist and have played the piano since childhood (and taught both.) I recently had my mother's cello restored which I think her parents bought for her in about 1932. So, I'm deciding whether or not to try to play the cello. It looks like a daunting process which a new instrument always is. I really appreciate watching your videos because they give me an idea of what might lie ahead.
I was wondering if you could make a playlist with all your cello tutorials in order? It would be very handy and helpful. It’s hard finding them because I’m using my phone. Thank you.
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm a violin player and want to try the cello but haven't secured a teacher quite yet. Your tutorials have given me a lot of good food for thought. Best wishes!
Hi Sarah, I am new to cello. I have only been taking lessons for a few months- but have been pouring through your video's before/after class to help solidify things. Thank you so much- they are very helpful!!
Hi Sarah, i've just started playing cello and I watch your tutorials. Even made a playlist with all the important video's. I have learned the first finger from my teacher. She says I'm doing Well and hear the notes clear. I practice from the books cello time joggers and Suzuki school cello. This is so much fun! Greetings from belgium. A new cellist is Born.
When I started with the Cello about a year ago, I didn't really hear the difference between slightly too flat, slightly too sharp or right on the note. I did hear it in comparison with another note, so I started by playing an open string and then putting down finger 1. Slightly off the right spot was easier for me to hear, that way. In time, my hearing became better again, and it became easier to distinguish between slightly off and right on the spot, so I no longer need to play the open string now.
Hi there, I'm now very interested in learning how to play a Cello. However, I just want to play Cello with fingers (for Jazz music), not with a tick (sorry I don't know how to call it). So can you please give me some advice how to learn playing a Cello?
Oh thank you, I just searched "double bass" like you suggested. I found this clip: ua-cam.com/video/QupB4NN8fI0/v-deo.html However, he still use the tick. I would like to use fingers only.
Also I have a fifth line which is very useful (especially with high melodies on the A string, which can even go beyond it a little). This plays the same note as the next open string. When alternating two adjacent notes quickly and one is an open string it is easier to just play it on one string instead of two. And it is a quick way to check all of your strings are in tune with each other.
I just purchased a marker from amazon and a tuner. I'm working on the two octave C major scale. I can't believe this. I want to venture further Sarah. jejeje
Great vid. Much more relatable than the poncy English bloke, haha... We got a free Cello yesterday and I'm gonna be a pro at making the notes flat in no time now!
First - thanks for a great beginner video. My wife and I ordered our 1st cello. Rarin' to go. Now - tapes... I am a guitar player. The tapes may be a bad influence on some, but for me I need position visuals to start. Then off they go. They shouldn't be a crutch - just a map.
Thank you for your tutorial video's. I recently had my first cello lesson, but my teacher is on a three week holiday now. So in the meantime I wanted to get a lot of practice in, and your video's are very helpful! (:
hi sarah, i'm just learning (in my mid-50's) and your lessons are the best. however, i don't see an order. is there a table of contents of your lessons? thank you
I have played piano for 10 years of my life and I’ve always wanted to play a cello.. I just ordered my first cello (an electric) and I’m so excited to start learning. I just hope I can get good at it because I will be teaching myself. No lessons. I hope your videos may help me you’re extremely good at this instrument. Thank you
Nice, I bought a cello a long time ago when i was on college, quarantine it's the best time toretake this. Any tips for the pain on the left hand of holding the strings ?
What's worse for me is the cramping in the right hand holding the bow! That muscle between my thumb and forefinger gets tired so fast. Might have something to do with how little I write on paper, I'm not sure. I'd love tips on strengthening both hands!
Hi Sarah, thank you very much for the video. I like your pace and patience in explaining everything especially the muscle memory part. So my question is that why pianos and cellos both have Do re me fa so la xi sounds. They are two very different instruments but why they ‘coincidentally’ produce similar sound?? #I am a piano beginner
Hi Sarah! I am a very beginner cellist. I am having trouble keeping my bigger pinkie joint from collapsing. I think that part of this is because my fingers can’t spread very far. Do you have any tips for either issue? Thanks so much!
I know it's very late to answer but it could be useful for other people. My cello teacher made me buy a 4/4 cello instead of a 3/4 which would have been better for my little hands. The first months of practice I had a champagne cork between my forefinger and middle finger to stretch them. And it did work! It's uncomfortable at first but it helps a great lot when learning how to position the left hand on the instrument.
Listened to an older anime song earlier with a cello and out of curiosity thought I'd see how they work, 1 cool the notes work like a guitar, going up as you go down the neck. And 2 that muscle memory trick is actually a very cool idea.
Thank you for sharing with us. My questions are 1. How far down the finger board do you measure to put the first tape and what is the measurement interval fir the second etc. and 2. My D string makes an UN even sound. How do I fix it? Thanks.

I have a dumb question so sorry but when you place the tapes on the fingerboard can you remove them without having the fingerboard sticky and messed up?
I've heard the recommendation that beginners should not not use tape to help them learn, because it hinders the progress long term when you get used to using your eyes instead of ears and hand coordination. What is your opinion to using aid tape vs not using it, despite the learning threshold becoming a bit higher? I'm not using tape, but its a bit frustrating not having a visual reference point. I do come from guitar, so I'm used to being able to "cheat" with visual aid.
+Wanessie I think using tape is just fine. :) I used it when I was learning, and it helped to develop my ear. Once my ear was more trustworthy, I took off the tapes. Past that point, the journey of refining your intonation goes on for the rest of your life.
