Typical Donut are you starting with bowing or plucking? I started with plucking.
Plucking will be very painful if you’re a beginner. Blisters and all, but your fingers will get used to it and will no longer get them in the future.
@@naynay2217 I skipped pizzicato for simple songs. Jingle bells ode to joy, twinkle twinkle little star, old Mac Donald. I’m using essential elements right now and these are the song I can play by heart now
Typical Donut sounds fun, but you can’t avoid pizz forever. Cuz some songs have a lot of it.
I’ve been playing for 3 months and still don’t know my notes… (other than 1st position, which I’m advanced in.
You have no idea how much I needed this! I learned first position in school, but as I'm no longer attending that school, I have no one to teach me. And I can't afford a teacher yet. At least I know where my fingers go. Thank you~

Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I'm a professional cellist but somehow I never learned the appropriate specific names for the positions, and looking around the internet, lots of people explain it differently and have named the positions differently. Now my students are getting into shifting so I need to be able to explain the positions consistently. So I'm writing them some position exercises, and I'll point them to this video. Thanks again!

Thanks for a really helpful video on the positions.. I never knew there were variations of the 2nd position. I'm starting to practice moving out of first position and playing in 2nd and 4th (mainly when playing something in G)

I feel as though I could spend a year working on a single scale and never get it quite right. please in the future talk about the upper register positions like 5th,6th, and 7th. But do like each of them in a seperate video for a better understanding. As always, your videos are helpful. 😊😊
Can you expand on this topic and explain when each position would be used? For example - if the song was in the key of F, would you start in Half Position? (because the Bb is the first fingered note on the A string.)
Question: Is that the enchanted necklace that gives you +25 to cello playing? If so - What dungeon can I find it in? Or is it just a regular necklace?
It appears in the shop after you reach level 43, defeat 4 dragons, and drink the holy water. it took me 60 hours of grinding, but i finally got it. Anyway good luck!

Thank you so much! I am a beginner, and this really helped me cover the basics.
I’m a teacher (and cellist), and this is how I learned also. When I teach from certain books, it says the Low 2nd is just 2nd, and what we learned as 2nd is High 2nd. I don’t like that, and I let my students know I don’t agree with it. I’ll tell them there’s contradictory information, but this is how I learned (how you taught it here), and that’s the stance I’m taking for where 2nd position is.
I also put their tapes on (A string notes) B-C#-D-E, and tell them that if their 1st finger is on that tape (excluding extensions), then that’s the position they’re in.
For example, if their 1st finger (pointer finger) is on B, they’re in 1st position because it’s where the first tape is. If their 1st finger is on the C#, they’re in 2nd position since the 2nd tape is there. (Same for 3rd & 4th position.)
It’s been helpful for my students to learn that way.

Thank you! I've been confused about these positions. My teacher uses different terms Upper and Lower 2nd and 3rd and extended. I've been putting my fingers incorrectly on strings.

Hey there new cello student here :) coming from bass guitar, so when I play 2nd and third position I have to bow much more toward the bridge as when I depress the g or d string I can’t bow it without hitting the other strings which are now higher than the string I’m fingering. Is this normal. ? Can you speak to this, or do I need to see someone about my 1/2 cello set up .. loving your videos find them very helpful and engaging .. many thanks 😊

My big struggle is how to read music when there is a different position.....Im really bad at reading music as it is but when it comes to different positions Im totally lost! Anything you could bring up sometime? Or is it something you just have to struggle through by experience :)
When it comes to positions, I think it helps to think in note names first and positions later. If you're completely familiar with where all of your notes are, learning positions will be much easier. Some might disagree, but that's how I learned.

And Im not super great at the notes yet (but I can figure it out by countiing haha!) but when I started to draw it out on a paper and then apply it to a song I havet learned yet (but am in the process of doing) suddenly it just fell in place, if you can say so. But it will take a lot of practice to see it without thinking but a start, so I have to agree with you at that learning! :D Thank you for your time!

I've heard mixed advice regarding thumb position, with some saying have it meeting the middle finger in first position, but first finger in higher positions, while others advise keeping it behind index finger
Mine is somewhere between first and second finger in first position and then across from first finger in fourth position.

Dear Sarah Joy, at 3:38 you say: "First position", "Low Second" (Position), "Regular Second" (Position). In Italy we say: "Prima Posizione" ("Prima posizione Mano Larga" ecc) and then we distinguish "Seconda Posizione", or "Seconda Posizione Mano Larga", or "Seconda Posizione Avanzata". Please can you explain to me what are the differences between the two ways you do SECOND POSITION, and the three ways we do it in Italy. Thank you. Goodbye
Will not having the right size cello make your bow shoulder hurt? I should have been fitted with a full sized cello I think and not a 3/4s size one. What do you think?
I'm not entirely certain. I suppose it could? More than likely, there's something probably a little off with your technique.

But why is it called high 3rd position and not low 4th position like the others?
Because there is a low fourth position. So like on the a string you put your first finger on e flat second finger on e natural third on f and fourth on f sharp
"Extended, High, Raised" Are they all the same?
thanks Alan. I'm teaching the mandocello and I'd like to use the same terminology if possible. A mandocello looks like a guitar, but it has 8 strings, in 4 courses, tuned like a cello.

I've been wondering why the focus is on the A string for beginners. It has the hardest for me to play, consistently, as a new player. I'd prefer to learn these scales on the C string. Am I alone in that?!
I know what you mean! The reason why teachers have beginners focus on the top two strings at first is because they don’t require as much pressure from the left hand. If you immediately begin playing on the bottom two, you risk tendinitis and the like.
@@sarahjoyrecordings oh! That makes a lot of sense. Thank you so much for the response. I come from playing guitar for a few decades so I'm starting from a better place in that regard. HOWEVER, I did have a sore arm/shoulder from learning the bow the first day. I have a feeling it's going to take a while to build up the muscles for that movement.
