  • In the early part of the 19th century, a woman was arrested for the gruesome murder of her husband in what's now Mitchell County, North Carolina.
Some said she acted in jealousy, others say she reacted to ongoing spousal abuse to protect herself and her baby daughter.
Today we tell the story of Frankie Silver, the first woman to be hanged in North Carolina.

That is quite a story! Guess we will never know for sure what happened. I know of a modern story where two men were burned with diesel fuel after being shot. The man who did it got away with it for a long time. The paper said his friend, who was there at the time and helped, got to feeling guilty and went to the Sheriff. Another story said he began to brag about getting away with it. He spent some time in jail.

Should of got into the hanging scenario of what the lady wore , the structure , and make type gallows , her approach , and whether a short , or long drop through the trap door.
There must of been a throng of spectators to witness the execution ,especially hanging a young women ?

There likely was, although by the time she was executed many folks were wanting her pardoned, so the details of how she died weren't that important. A novel has been written about Frankie Silver and what happened by Sharon McCrumb, though, that details much of her life. You might want to check out that book if you'd like more details than we can put into a 15 minute podcast.

Is there any story about Caroline Ship ; a very young women ( maybe in her early 20s ) who was hanged in a small mountainous town of Dallas, Gaston County , N.C..She was executed around 1902- 1910 . She was hanged for the murder of her infant , and hanged from.an oak tree ( it could of bin any type tree) in front of a throng of people .
I did sum research on this , and a story of it was written about the event in local newspapers , and ,also, very tragic , and Caroline was conceiving a baby when hanged by her pretty , soft , slender neck. She was left to dangle , as her slender African American ( ? ) body dangled by her slender ,pretty neck . She dangled until the coming of sundown ; she was hanged from a trees @ about soon after sunrise on an cold an early Dec..

That's a story we haven't run across. We'll do a little research ourselves and see if we can tell her story, too. Thanks for watching!
