  • In this video, we see my current favorite way to minimize holes when picking up stitches for the sleeves of a top-down sweater.
    Here are the steps:
    1. Beginning at the center of the stitches cast on for the underarm, pick up and knit to the corner near your previously held stitches.
    2. Locate the bars between the cast on stitches and the held stitches which have stretched out.
    3. Pick up the final stitch below the underarm & knit it together through the back loop with the first stretched out bar.
    4. Place the next bar on the lefthand needle and knit it together with the first held stitch, knitting as normal.
    5. Knit all held stitches until 1 remains.
    6. Locate the two bars from the stretched out stitches after this last held stitch.
    7. Slip the held stitch purlwise to your right needle, pick up the first bar with your left needle. Transfer the held stitch back to your lefthand needle, changing the orientation of the stitch as you transfer it. Knit together through the back loop.
    8. Using your lefthand needle, pick up the next stitch from the underarm cast on edge. Use your righthand needle to place the last stretched out bar behind this picked up stitch. Knit these together as normal.
    9. Pick up the remaining stitches to the center of the underarm.
    10. Mark beginning of round, and continue knitting in the round, following the instructions for your sleeves.
Duplicate stitch as needed for further reinforcement of any remaining strained stitches / gapping.
