I learned 2 things. 1- if you use the same sized stones throughout the entire process you do not need to raise the holder. 2. - if you do intend to use stones of different thicknesses, set the height with the first stone. Then adjust the height of the holder for stones of different thicknesses which will compensate for the difference in thickness, thus ensuring the same sharpening angle.
