    One of my first Joe's to buy complete as a kid in the 90's at the flea market. Still have him to this day, no birds perched on his head though

    This was the first guy from 1986 that I saw, and from there was introduced to that year's figures by his card back. I liked to pair him with Lifeline, and either I pretended they were related or there was something in the cartoon about them being related. I wasn't one for lasers in GI Joe, except if someone was actually a laser trooper. The description on the file card of his laser wasn't too farfetched, as it needed to burn into something for so long before destroying it, as opposed to the Star Wars laser blasting that was done on the cartoon.

    I loved his figure. Here in Spain was called Sargeant Laser!!! You could make a video talking about odd name translations in other counties.

    Not only did Sci-Fi (one of the 1986 Joes) replace 1982's Flash, he (Sci-Fi) even returned in early 1991, with a new version.

    I have a confession to make:
    My 11 year old self was tagging along with my mom to a store called "Ben Franklin". Luckily they had one endcap with G.I.JOEs. I saw that bright green artwork on the cardback and was INTRIGUED. I rifled through all the Joe's and found one towards the back. He was $3.29.
    Bought him with my allowance and loved him. As much as I hate the bright colors as an adult, they knew what they were doing when they first introduced the neon. SCI-FI and LifeLine were must-haves because they were so different!

  • @bartdman95

    Back when we first had Sci-Fi, we mistaken him for GREEN 2, a member of the BIOMAN Super Sentai team.
    I think he spoke in the ARISE SERPENTOR ARISE. He said something like "What now General" while on top of a tank. :)

    I definitely used Sci-Fi as a Robocop analog before there were any Robocop toys released - I didn't paint my Sci-Fi, and I have some faint memories of trying to justify (in play) why he was green, but I don't recall what those justifications were.

    I really like this character if he only comes with a giant laser weapon they should have given a secondary rifle or submachine gun something to defend himself if anything happened to the main weapon or he has to work with a lot of backup or he's the main sport and if any other Joe's are with them they can back them up

      I'm aware this version of Sci-Fi (from 1986) is clean shaven; if I had the figure of the early 1991 Sci-Fi (wearing black and grey uniform), I'd use milliput and black acrylic paint, to sculpt him a black moustache (it would be quite a thin one), and I'd have to finish it with a sealant.

    Nothing wrong with Nostalgia, I am only here for the vintage reviews, whether a great figure or a crap figure and even though I have nothing against modern figures, I am just not at all interested in them so keep up the great work with the vintage line, atleast until fast draw has been reviewed anyway ;)

    • @HCC788

    Nah, the sci fi aspects of GI joe were the best bits. The appeal was the blending of real world and fantasy. The weirder the characters the better.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_YAL-1 I think he was meant to be the rifle version of this... Which is outstanding, since most of that plane is the battery. Seems like he was meant to take out hard targets at range.

    HCC, Yep, I am a published author, of juvenile fiction. My last book is The Adventures of Captain Tuna, No Bath for Me. It is about a smelly pirate. You write such great scripts for your channel, that is why I asked if you were published, maybe had a GI Joe review book on the market.

    Cool video. I like the vintage Joes as well as the modern ones. I think it's because I really liked the characters, the whole G.I. Joe Vs. Cobra mythos. To me it was so much more than liking the toys. I also collected the comics, but began to lose interest after the 1987 movie. I also really like the modern design of the figures starting with the Pursuit of Cobra series. (same thing with modern toys in general - Star Wars black series, Transformers Masterpiece, Batman Animated 6 inch figures, etc.)

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  7 років тому +1

      I think the key is the characters and the story. That's what made the toys come to life.

  • @rtd1409

    Sci-Fi was cool for me as was the last figure of the 1986 line we got and that was the first and only year back then we did a sweep and got 1 of every figure introduced in a single year. Now lets see that Flea shooting SAW Viper that uses his 6 foot to scale long rifle to shoot tiny parasites at huge distances! Reality was really in use when that was conceived.

    Unpainted details seem to clue me in that one branch at Hasbro did their best work in figure invention while another failed them dis-regardless. Also, Sci-Fi may have looked better colored differently. Another one of your finest reviews!

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  7 років тому +2

      Thank you! I assume some details went unpainted to cut the cost of production. I understand that, but it is not my job as a reviewer to care about Hasbro's bottom line. If the detail is unpainted, and it should be painted, I have to point that out.

    With that emphasis on long range accuracy--12,500 feet is about *4000* yards...that's seriously a long, long way in the small arms world. I'm confused about why there's no bipod, much less a tripod? Plenty of other realistic weapons had bipods or tripods... At that range I'd expect some kind of large area target, like a Cobra space vehicle, fuel tank, a Condor strategic bomber or something similar to be the target, not an individual soldier...still that only makes it easiER not easY.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  7 років тому

      In the first issue of the G.I. Joe comic book, Flash used his laser rifle as a cutting tool. I think that's a good use for it. If you really have to hold a laser point on a target for a second or two, not only does the shooter need to remain very still, so does the target! I can imagine a big laser like the HAL being able to knock down airplanes with a high-powered, instant burn. But the handheld lasers wouldn't be that powerful.

      My point is that there has been a heavy sifi, not slight bit heavy sifi connection in GI Joe since the beginning but you act like the wheels come off the rails in season 2 when those elements have been their all along. If you want less sifi then it's actually the DIC series that is more your style, but the uniforms get much brighter.
