    I was so upset we never got a series featuring the 1987 characters. I loved outback and falcon and would've loved more of them.

      Finally found *someone* who feels the same as *I* do - bet you were additionally 'so upset' that we never got a series featuring the 1988 characters (like Hardball, Charbroil and Shockwave). Even if we saw Stalker's 1989 'Tundra Ranger' outfit (let alone only in DiC's 'Operation: Dragonfire'), and the new DiC cartoon (post-movie), featuring the 1990 characters (like Captain Grid-Iron and Ambush, as well as Static Line, from 1990's 'Sky Patrol' team), and the 1991 characters (like that year's versions of Low-Light and Sci-Fi), it's not good enough. I'd additionally have liked seeing the Tiger Force versions of Lifeline, Roadblock, Duke and Tripwire in animation (possibly even the UK exclusive Tiger Force versions of Psyche-Out and Outback in animation). The 1987 and 1988 characters were definitely to have appeared in Sunbow's animation, post-movie.
      Depending on where you're from, do you remember a 90s cartoon, called 'Transylvania Pet Shop'? If you did see it, and, even if *it* was a good cartoon, it still doesn't deflect the shame that we never got a series featuring the 1987, let alone 1988, characters (as well as Outback, and his original 1987 paint scheme, we were definitely to have seen Psyche-Out, in his original 1987 paint scheme, as well as, of course, more animated appearances from Falcon). Oh, and we'd have seen Gung-Ho, in his new 'Marine dress blues' outfit, in animation, in this new series featuring the 1987 characters.

    I still have 6 royal guard and Nemisis enforcers and 1 Golobulous from my younger years. In 1989ish I found these on clearance for 1.50 and snagged them up for the royal guards I love that figure they make awesome personal guard for Cobra Commander with real guns

    Man it's crazy how different I see the movie than most Joe fans. I thought the movie was incredible and I never had a hard time buying the plot at all, though I was in first/second grade when it came out so maybe I would have seen it differently had I been older? Even to this day I still feel like it's incredible. I thought the Cobra LA figures themselves were underwhelming but the movie was top notch and even a shade darker than the series. I actually thought the movie more or less marked the peak of GI Joe and from there it went downhill. The 1988 line was still great, 1989 was the beginning of the end though. Some good figures in 89's line and even a handful in 90 and 91 but 86 - 88 was the pinnacle with the movie being right smack in the middle of that pinnacle period.

    I was at comic con NYC..and saw toy booth walk past saw zartan ..with a price tag 50 bucks and l loved zartan as kid..my favorite as I held in my hands rush of happiness came through me. and I ask myself who would pay 50 buck ..well I did but I love your story it was similar to me ..but you made me realize I loved gi Joe more than
    any toy line and how it got me through tuff time in childhood . best part in all of this I found out last night
    zartan kills serpentor
    go zartan.

    My childhood is almost parallel to yours. Picked up every comic I could get my hands on and absolutely loved the GIJoe toyline up until Cobra La. Darn spumoni characters! They felt so out of place, so i stopped collecting... Up until '88, when I saw and needed just one last character; gold masked Destro.
    Anyway, great video! :)

    Nemesis Enforcer was by far the coolest of the three in the movie, but the figure was disappointing, as was Golobulus. I think a 5.5 inch figure would've done for N.E. Golobulus needed his hover ball thingie.

      Yeah, I remember almost buying the 3 pack, and changing my mind at the last minute. Nemesis Enforcer was the coolest one, but I remember thinking, that he didn't really go with any of the other Cobra's figures that I had.

    I think the whole GI Joe movie- including Cobra La, the death (or not) of Duke, etc represented a point of the Joeverse where they tried to diverge into something new and it backfired.

    I was lucky enough to have the Sectaurs Hyve playset (and still have it in box) so the only positive thing about Cobra La was I incorporated them in my mixed Star Wars/ G.I.Joe universe...and used it as their headquarters.

    I didn't like Cobra La. Cobra Commander left Cobra La to start Cabra and he was a snake man??? It was a mess. He turned into a snake and then came back as a person in the cartoon....... I was kind of at the age where I stopped playing with G.I. Joe. Cabr La was the worst!

  • @aerytful
    @aerytful 8 років тому +1

    Fun fact: Pythona would have become a carded figure in 1988, but she was discontinued because of the movie's...um... Unpopularity. Anyway, I think that the movie would have been apreciated more if we had seen a third season of the cartoon. Cobra Commander with his new uniform would have played a major role, despite the facts of the movie. And finally, we would probably have seen a Cobra Civil War, just like in the comics! The last one I'm pretty sure that would have happened, because if you remember, in the last episode of the cartoon, "Into Your Tent I Will Silently Creep", Cross Country discovers that Cobra Commander has created an organisation within Cobra, "The Coil", which purpose was to take over Cobra from Serpentor and Dr. Mindbender. He was supported by Destro, Firefly, Storm Shadow and some Vipers.

  • @jmsberetta

    Great video! You really summed up what was great about GI Joe and growing up in the early 80s by putting all the details into historical context. Clearly we're around the same age. I started tuning out with the GI Joe Movie, but continued reading the Marvel comic for a couple more years, and still bought the odd figure here or there, like new versions of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow...but none of that Ninja Force junk...lol

    As a kid who didn't start playing with G.I. Joes until around 89, I was used to weird bright colored figures. I actually loved Golubulus, even though now I wonder how I made him do anything useful....but I always hated the other two. I was lucky enough for my cousin to send me his Joes from 82-83 on that he had. My favorites growing up were Ally Viper V1 and Spearhead and Max. I guess I had a thing for orange. I think it has to do with the era you grew up in.

    I strongly agree, HCC. I concur with all that you've said: everything from why you've collected, when you began, when you stopped, and why. Interestingly, I also stopped collecting GI Joes in around '88. I recall revisiting a toy store a few years later to curiously see what became of Joe figures, which (in my opinion) took a turn for the worst with regards to characters like Cobra La, the loud bright colors in the design of the figures and vehicles, as well as the idea that everything I originally enjoyed about GI Joe as a kid (the real-world military element), was becoming less of that as the toy line came to it's demise several years later. Excellent review...you've articulated your thoughts very well as I began to see that we parallel in our sentiments about the line when we were boys, as well as the desire to pick up collecting again as enthusiasts and adult collectors for the purposes of nostalgia and the potential of real-world military influence that were enticing (and convincing) to young boys like us who've grown up to appreciate it.

    Have you looked at the IDW GI Joe comics? Serpentor is a normal human, but he’s a cult leader, in charge of the Coil. Golobulus is part of their mythos and only appears as a hieroglyph. It’s a lot more grounded in reality, and maybe the way Hasbro should have gone. But I do think Hasbro realized their mistake because they never released any other cobra la figure, vehicle, or play set.

  • @emasabates
    @emasabates 6 років тому +5

    I loved these guys as a kid, and I still have a soft spot for these figures. It could be that my toy playtime wasn't dominated by any one toy line. My figures were mixed, gijoe, transformers, he man, voltron all fought together. So Cobra la fits into my universe quite well.
    So maybe the question isn't were these good, but how many children only collected one toy line in the eighties. These were perfect for cross the line competition and kids like me who had a little bit of everything was quite enamoured with the cobra la 3 pack.

    I was in 3rd grade when the GI Joe tv movie aired. Soon after I got this 3-pack, and I have to admit I thought it was...lol, awesome. Especially the dude with the wings. I was much too young to be cognizant of any of the political implications of GI Joe. I just thought GI Joe was awesome. :) But I do genuinely appreciate this dissenting view. I was very much a kid, and my memories of the toys and cartoon (which I watched every afternoon) are colored accordingly. Good vid. Interesting commentary.

    I'm with you almost all the way. I loved the realism of the G.I. Joe universe. Hell, I even begrudgingly liked Serpentor and the B.A.T.S. just because G.I. Joe and cobra were supposed to be on the cutting edge of military technology. I didn't like Serpentor as Cobra Emperor. The Big C.C. was the leader, hands down. I loved the comic because Cobra won just as much as the Joes, and you couldn't realistically have an organization stay together that is defeated and demoralized at every turn like in the silly cartoon. I was 12 in '87 so,i,was pretty well done with with toys and moving into chasing girls and playing sports. Cobra LA was the nail in the coffin for me. I bought a couple more Joes that I displayed on a shelf in my room, but they weren't played with and that was it.

    Serpentor was the tipping point. I like Serpentor, but his introduction was the water skis hitting the ramp of Gi Joe jumping the shark. Cobra La was (to me) Gi Joe doing a no handed double backflip over the shark. Most of the later stuff represents a crash landing followed by being eaten by the shark.

    I feel you HCC788. I ignored Cobra-La. My jumping-off point was Slaughter's Marauders because of the cheap paint application and cheeeeeeeeeeeaaaaappppp plastic... Funny story, I still had both versions of the 1986 Sgt. Slaughter which even as late as 1989 still had both thumbs intact... Bought 1989 Sgt. Slaughter and the right thumb broke inside of a week, left thumb i think was done in inside on a month.

    I didn't mind the fantasical nature of Cobra-La, probably because I already had my Joes teaming up with Transformers and fighting Inhumanoids by the time they were released. I was always fascinated with horror and the Occult and wasn't averse to adding those elements to my little Joeverse. What I did hate, however, was the movie making these guys the end all, be all of Cobra. In my world I scaled them down to a small cult Cobra Commander allied himself with to undermine Serpentor.

    I have been thinking about the deep message you projected here and I wish to say as much as I was not disappointed this badly until the live action GI Joe movie in 2009 that to me was such a dis to nearly 30 years of loyalty through the good the bad and the Corba-LA! The live action movie (Was there a second one?) was such a dis changing charachters that were part of my whole childhood around so badly. I was so happy to hear we would get Destro and the forgotten Joe team girl Cover Girl but what happened was horrible. We actually walked out of the so-called movie halfway through! A for the Cobra-La'sI should note the poor plastic used on the CobraLa figures as was evident in many 1987 figures and vehicles. Sadly the Sgt. Slaughters Renegades 3-Pack was made of that and usually the rattling neck is the first noticeable problem. I really do feel you message in your videos and after reading the Corba-La filecards (I dare admit) I totally side with you on this matter. The half of the animated movie they did not occupy was pretty classic for me I love the "Rawhides" and Beachead esp the dynamic of Falcon and Jinx the new Joe couple. And then no follow up Sunbow cartoon..... The only Cobra-La element I liked was Pythona and they never gave her a figure until just recently. And there were no "Crabs" on her body!

    I think people jumped ship too quick. 1989 had a great selection of military inspired figures and vehicles, and is a contender for one of the better Gi Joe years. Probably the lines last. The toy quality was still there in the later years, but the better toys were mixed in with the crazier ideas.

    Man where do you get off...? No just kidding I think your points are pretty valid. At your age in that year I can totally understand the "what the hell are they doing?" mentality. For me, I was just jumping ship from He man, to Gi joe in 1987. My first Gi joe was the BAT from 1986, and I really didn't start collecting Joes until 1987. I had no choice, He man was dead in 1987. I was 8 at the time and a little more naive. I had the Cobra la set, I got it for Christmas, I still thought "ah crap" when I opened it though. I like the movie mostly because of it being on in segments after school. It gave me something to look forward to watching. I still enjoy it today, but I agree that it is not good, just a good memory.

    I was obsessed with GI Joe cartoon and action figures. This is from age 8 to maybe 12. I actually had the figures in this video. Cobra-La never bothered me one bit. GI Joe exists in a fantasy universe that they simply added more fantasy elements to.

    The toys for the new year would start coming out in March or April, with the brochure included in the vehicles. There was no mention of the GI Joe movie and no real explanation of what Cobra-La was. Golobulus was depicted with a short curled tail section that allowed him to stand on his own. I bought this Cobra-La set though, but only used the Royal Guard guy
    like he was any other Cobra trooper, typically sitting him in a vehicle's driver seat or gun emplacement. When I saw the movie in the video store in late 1987 and watched it, I had no idea what was happening. GI Joe in that animated aspect was dead to me, but it didn't hinder my toy playing at all. I got loads of the stuff that came out in late 1987 through 1990. HISS II, Fang II, Rolling Thunder, Phantom X-19 and figures like Recoil, Rock n Roll, Hit and Run, various new Vipers, Shockwave all were the same kind of awesome stuff GI Joe always was.

    First off, thank you. Your channel is awesome to me. You've enlightened me on so many rich points of the GI Joe franchise I never found before. I bought the Cobra-la 3 pack back in the day, almost as a way TRY to accept this movies overdone (or half-baked) script. It did not work. They crossed that Serpentor line at Mach 4 for me. I loved the Joes. Still, I wanted to grasp this reality somewhat, but never could. A month ago, I was replacing o-rings in all my old figures and came to Golobulus. It was like a victim seeing his own sex offender kind of repulsion. I totally see your point in this video. No one should have okayed this jump. The comics handled Serpentor decently as to be expected and left this sad chapter out completely. I still collected a few more (I was already in my 20's) but the military fantasy was disappearing rapidly. Thank God for the inclusion of the Iron Grenadier to keep some handle on things. Keep doing your thing HCC. I am loving this series. Great speaking chops too. And yes, GI Joe has helped me through some rough times too.

      sam torres You make a good point about Iron Grenadiers. At some point I'm going to review toys from after I walked away from the line (because I aim to review ALL vintage Joe toys). There were some that were not that bad. If I had stuck around, I might have changed my mind. But it was too late by then. I was already gone.
      I'm glad you liked the video! I hope you'll stick around for more! I'm happy to have you on board.

      @samfrito 9 років тому +1

      Yes, the toy line got too sci-fi and bright for me and I walked away, too. Your video conveyed a lot of my same attitudes, but I was very into the comic as well (and didn't have to worry about kids my age knocking me, I was already an adult, co-workers, maybe). I am enjoying these great and thorough reviews!

    100% with you here. With my kids these days I don't know what to get them toy wise cause most things are lame compared to 1980s toys. I get the different fantasy worlds also. I'm alittle more OCD though having scale issues and the like.

    Loved your review and you pretty much hit the nails on the heads for me to be honest I never read the original comics or the show my introduction was the 1987 movie but what I really fell in love with her the military characters and vehichles I loved flint and falcon cuz when I saw them I was like awesome green Barrets and when I saw road block he was cool I said wow heavy infantry trooper and beach head one of my absolute favourite how's I actually thought he was an espionage soldier but other than that I hated the movie story and the cobra la actually my brothers told me later on that cobra la was never part of the gi joe story so I had some hope but still I love your review of the movie

    I remember buying these figures first and liking them before seeing the movie which I too was appalled by as a child. The movie gave me nighmares;( Now the movie has grown on me and I even have an autographed bluray signed by Sgt. Slaughter. I never really cared for the whole Cobra La mythos with Serpentor and Cobra Commander. I think they were encountered by my Joe's and Cobra one day on a mission in the backyard and they all just started to fight one another.

    Even GI Joe ignored Cobra-La after the movie, it's too bad that was your catalyst since the line continued right on without that misstep. You may have gotten a few more years out of it, until the great neon craze that killed it for almost everybody still in it :)

      @@charlesdavis4887 Well I mean the toys still went on pretty well if you ignored the movie weirdness. 1987-1991 had some great figures, and a few awesome vehicles too. I think Joe's problem by then was simply the kids who grew up on it were aging out, and younger kids weren't picking it up.

    I liked Nemises Enforcer the Royal guard looks cool too. I was more into He-Man so the fantasy element is what I liked as a kid. The more garish colors and the outlandish characters are what made me enjoy GI Joe more than the military element. On that note I didn't care much for the GI Joe movie or Cobra la even if I do think a couple of characters look cool. I like the unrealistic weapons and the more sci-fi element to it along with the fantasy. I do like a lot of the military looking characters too. No one is cooler than Cobra Commander.
