    "TF2 has far fewer moments of charachter building" yeah, maybe. But they are really powerful and only mocking quotes happen when you kill someone 4 Times in a row without him killing or assissting in your death. I think that it is actually a very good way to do this. The mockery happens very rarely, but when it does the lines feel original, unlike "I've been fighting trash like you for years". And then just one kill or even an assist on your dominator triggers your response, mocking him. It keeps everybody in good mood. Tryhards in a cocky one and noobs in a "haha, I got him! REVANGE!" mood. And everybody is happy.

    Speaking of the psychology, that's something that Respawn took into consideration with Titanfall 2: like with other competitive shooters, there is the concept of the Nemesis; however the way it works in 2 is that the player is complimented when killing someone who they are the nemesis of, but the voices over the radio never comment when the player is being dominated unless they kill their nemesis, in which case they will congratulate them on it with a line like "that guy sure deserved it".

I do not want to name details I just wanted to give you my deepest and honest thank you for making these videos and keeping me at bay from literally everything. 0:21 Holy shit that beginning Quote was ME. imgur.com/a/6O8ts Glad you expanded on my thoughts, minus the heavy, bad sarcasm.
    For the record, I would like to say that I really DO love the gameplay of Lawbreakers, and a lot of other games that I brought up, but having great characters/stories goes miles to make an FPS better, yet it feels like the only time that happens is in a more cartoonish/casual focused FPS like Overwatch.
    When Blizzard was hyping up Overwatch as an FPS with a high competitive skill ceiling, combined with a 'unique' art style and characters that aren't obnoxious (well, kinda), I was hyped, and after 200$ spent on getting into the beta very early, TWO preorders with the special skins, and over 800 hours in the game, I was crushed to finally accept that it really was just another casual shooter. I spent so long in denial, and so did many of the people I met while playing in the beta, they all just stopped playing because the game was clearly so focused on appealing to casual players.
    Which is fine, but it just sucks to see a game that had so much hype around it shoot itself in the foot by trying too hard to appeal to "all skill levels" instead of being a game that is great casual fun in a group, or an intense high skilled team game like Tf2 is.
    Like what would happen if an Arena Shooter had good characters and wasn't obsessed with the characters berating everyone constantly? Like copy paste Overwatch characters into Lawbreakers, thats just the dream game for me.

    • @TheRadPlayer
      @TheRadPlayer 7 років тому

      So instead of making a more casual class-based arena shooter, a market where no game was dominant, they should have made a more hardcore class-based arena shooter, a market where TF2 is very dominant, and also has an incredibly loyal fanbase.
      Why try to please a fanbase that already has a game they're super invested in? Why not try to instead tap into a less monopolized market for more profit? Can't really argue with the results...

    • @Uncompromising_Mode
      @Uncompromising_Mode 7 років тому +1

      Tf2 was dominant because it was the ONLY game to fulfill that trinity on the market, and Blizzard pulled the rug right out from under Valve once they realized Valve was getting lazy.
      Overwatch was incredibly popular even when people thought it WAS going to be a hardcore shooter, because it was the second triple A class based shooter with actually good looking design coming out in like 10 years, and it was shown at Tf2's lowest point, when people we're bored of the game due to lack of dev support.
      And yet a ton of people who we're expecting that hardcore shooter are now still waiting.
      (And when I say class based, I don't mean something like Brink, everyone reading this should know what I mean).

    "During gameplay tf2 has far fewer moments of this character building" Im sorry Raycevick but i cannot agree with that. tf2 has hours of dialog for each class interacting with another one

    • @Raycevick
      @Raycevick  7 років тому +68

      It certainly does, but there's lots more long stretches of silence during a match compared to Overwatch.

    • @dataecto6135
      @dataecto6135 7 років тому +24

      Calvin_Coolage Theres also its dominations as well. The lines said from one class to another fits what is said in the video regarding the player character insulting the other player and their lack of skill. Unlike Quake Arena, the line doesnt play everytime you made a kill, but when you're constantly killing the same player over and over again.
      The pre battle one liners before a battle (plus the ones Casual Mode added within a casual match) also give a good idea of what your character is due to the fact some of them are able to go on for quite a while due to the fact that no one is currently trying to kill you. This kind of dialog can carry with you throughout a game, even if you dont know how to use voice commands. TF2 certainly did it diffrently from Overwatch and Lawbreakers do it, but its still rather neat and is a nice example.

    • @DetectiveMekova
      @DetectiveMekova 7 років тому +4

      My issue with TF2's dialog is the characters are too boring for the dialog to be interesting. Granted hearing Tracer and Mercy shoot the shit before the match gets lame because it's all exposition... But at least they have personalities that also go with their dialog. With TF2, the dialog literally is: The drunken man talks shit about how much of a wimp the Australian sniper is. Or how the builder dude is so good that the French spy can't destroy his equipment without him knowing. It's X talks about how Y [Enter verbs and/or contractions here] Z. Or they taunt eachother. Also the vocal commands like "go go go" follow the same pattern. Whereas overwatch has a world around just that one battle, or that one conversation. With one bit of dialog, you can tell that the sniper is a cocky Australian, and that Reinhart is a honorable german tank. However with two lines of dialog, you see that Reinhart is also a sort of father figure to the team. Each character has their own interactions with one another both in game and out. I think the game would benefit from more Uprising-related content, since that gamemode added weight to the dialog.What has TF2 done? What has valve done to improve the world around it? Not much. The best thing was Manco in my opinion. It's due to the player base not really caring about that, and caring more with loot crates, rare skins and guns, and basic FPS mechanics. I do believe in the phrase "If it's not broke, don't fix it", but in this case it's like a check engine light blinking. I would like to fix the problem if only to stop the light from blinking.

    Last point is more important than you might think. No weapon grinds means there is no disadvantage to a new player other than the skill. There is no weapon that magically does twice as much damage etc. If you have skill you can own someone playing the game for 1000 hours.

    Your last line hit the mark - "will leave them open to everything gaming has to offer". I'm 34 and have been an avid gamer since before I could read. That being said, my gaming in the last 10-15 years was limited to military shooters, GTA, and Fallout. After playing Overwatch, I really started to branch out while shedding the subconscious idea I had that somehow a game that wasn't edgy or dark was for kids.

  • @austinm5630
    @austinm5630 7 років тому

    One very important thing you mentioned at 8:53 or so that I think probably deserves more attention:
    Weapon grinding.
    One of the single best things about Overwatch is that 100% of the rewards are cosmetic. This means that every player has access to every character, every weapon, every counter, every niche playstyle that fits them, all from the very beginning. All they're fighting for is bragging rights, experience (in the learn-from-your-mistakes-and-git-gud sense of the word), and cosmetics.
    People can complain about the loot boxes all they want, but at the end of the day, I'd MUCH rather have cosmetic-only loot that a few people with money to burn can use to support the game, then lock entire weapons, characters, or other stuff that actually effects gameplay behind either a grindwall or a paywall.
    In this sense, Overwatch does have something in common with at least some of the arena shooters you mentioned, especially Quake and UT. Sure, Overwatch has "classes" in a sense, but since they all start fully unlocked at 100%, your ability to thrive is based on your skill, not the fact that you have/haven't unlocked the AWP yet. It's just that, in Overwatch, hero selection (which is really "counter selection" when you think about it) is part of that skill, whereas in the arena shooters, 99% of the skill is based on your ability to aim and to dodge, really.

    Great video. I had been thinking on this idea myself, and I can't stop smiling about seeing what I daydreamed about at work so well analyzed on UA-cam. :D I'd also argue the best lines from Quake Champions reinforce both character AND the player. This actually is what drew me to my 2 favorite characters; Ranger and Slash. Ranger says things like, "When you're 20 feet tall and throwing lightning; THEN you can challenge me." And Slash, "It must have been mah birthday!" Both strongly reinforcing aspects of their personality or backstory.

    I think the thing that sets apart Overwatch tonally from other shooters is the overall tone of positivity. It's definitely one of the biggest reasons I've stuck with it, while many others have fallen by the wayside. Nothing in the tone of the game, visually or in voicelines, is degrading or insulting. Instead it is generally encouraging, or at least neutral/tongue-in-cheek. In Quake, the enemy characters calling me trash, or otherwise actively tearing me down through voicelines doesn't feel good. It doesn't make me want to play better, it just makes me want to not play. Which sucks, because I love the game mechanically. And I totally understand that this is subjective. I've been fighting Major Depressive Disorder for years, and so super-negative or degrading tones in games stand out to me a lot, and it's just not an environment I want to immerse myself in.

    I love overwatch because it's competitive and did a good job letting me learn the ropes. I love learning that new flank route, landing a one shot combo on a key target, and having my team tell me "ah good shit Gengo", but just of all I love the adrenaline when you and your team are absolutely steam rolling em. I find people I love to play with and work well with, and we climb the ranks together, learning more and more about how to better aim, better positioning, target prioritization. It's like the struggle of playing a fighting game, but there are no tournaments or uphill battles you HAVE to face to get better at the game. You have you, competitive, and a friendly game with occasionally not so friendly players. but you do learn

      It seemed like it was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek shooter when it was first revealed. However, in its transition to a more serious tone, it forgot to delete about half of that old style, leading to a bit of a mess in the game's style.

    • @sEaNoYeAh
      @sEaNoYeAh 7 років тому

      Yeah I get that. It's fair enough if someone feels like Overwatch is cynically designed to appeal to a wide array of people, kind of a miserable attitude, but fair. But at the same time Lawbreakers isn't all bro step out of artistic integrity, its style is designed to appeal to a particular demographic, and if that's not to your taste then regardless of the mechanical design the presentation is going to make the game wear thin. Plus like Beater said there are objective design problems right now.

    Overwatch characters don't trash talk because it's playerbase has already surpassed CS:GO and LOL in their toxicity.

    I've given up on climbing, I've already heard Zenyatta players accused of throwing.. Overwatch, the happiest, most colorful and inviting multiplayer game has sunk from it's own success.... the human element of this game is garbage, I lose a little bit of faith in humanity when I hear someone utter anything on the mic in Overwatch.
    great game, terrible community.

    • @Bread-kun
      @Bread-kun 7 років тому +11

      wizzzer1337 I think that tends to be the end result of a larger community, as well as a push for competitive play. when a game had a clear competitive mode where you climb a ladder and try to prove you are THE best, it grows incredibly toxic because chances are the person is fucking pissed off for losing a game earlier. or if they are talking shit to the enemy team they are trying to get under their skin and make them perform worse.
      I really do truly believe if both LoL and Overwatch never made the big push to be a competitive E-sports title the community would have remained a hell of a lot more tame.

      Actually had to stop playing it and go back to league because it was that bad. The worst part is the blame game is taking to a whole new level because you just start blaming the least liked hero on the team despite how well they are playing and call them to switch to something else. At least in league or csgo you can tell who really is playing poorly and you can't really try to micro manage them and they get more angry when they dont listen.

  • @j0nk
    @j0nk 7 років тому +5

    I think that the strength of OW's world building through it's characters is not necessarily in how playing a character makes you feel, like you explore in the video. For me (and I have issues with LawBreakers's appeal because of this), every OW character feels *distinct*. No matter who I'm playing, there is personality that - to a bigger or lesser extent - enforces gameplay styles (Widowmaker admiring kills the way players do in their highlight reels, D.Va being cocky when she absorbs an enemy ultimate, etc), and that makes the experience of playing a specific character unique within the game. And while it may not put the emphasis on competition the way LawBreakers or Quake do, I feel more invested, and I feel like I'm doing what I am supposed to do on that character. LawBreakers, for instance, does not have this kind of strong and different character design, neither in lore, nor in VA, nor in visuals. Whether I'm slicing enemy players in half with a grappling-hooking Assassin or blowing them up with rockets from a bulky Titan, the difference in gameplay isn't met in the character design. And while there may be some merit to this because LawBreakers doesn't have counters like OW does, it ultimately diminishes my long-term enjoyment of the game

    Trackmania is by no means a casual game. It can definitely be played as such, but getting used to the ins and outs of the cars you're driving and the different types of road (especially on Valley, what you showed) takes a lot of practice. The very idea of the game is basing on practice - playing a track over and over again until you inch ever closer to perfection. TM actually used to be a pretty big esport back in the day.

    I enjoyed the dialog presented in the video. The reason why is because it makes me think of shit I never thought about lol I do not know if it is because when I am in a middle of a multiplayer competitive game that I blank out and only focus on objective at hand or it doesn't really bother me, but I never quite notice the one lines characters say as you kill shit. Dam now even thinking about it, I never even put into thought that master chief in halo doesn't say shit. I guess thats why you have the narrator say shit like "double kill". I especially liked how you mentioned "Designing Games" as it shows that you are just not talking out of your ass, but actually put thought behind it.
    This is definitely a great video for someone to watch to understand and learn as to why developers create a product a certain way. Now I understand this analysis was just talking about the basic of "Fiction" as you had it pointed out in the video as the first step, but I believe that first step is always going to be the most critical one.

    I think Overwatch does such a good job reinforcing the player with its excellent UI feedback (the kill beep, the skull icon, etc,) that it doesn't really matter whether the characters' voice lines do it for you.

    It seems like most people have completely forgotten why games like Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament worked so well as multiplayer only games in the first place (aside from the kick ass music).
    Both games had already an established universe to build on, with familiar mechanics, weapons, sounds, levels and so on.
    So even if you only had played a little singleplayer of Quake or Unreal, you knew enough to start playing multiplayer in Q3 or UT.
    Mods like CS, Team Fortress and Dota also worked for this reason, because they build upon an already existing world/mechanics the player was familiar with.
    Of course there is a limit to how long and often you can reuse something, before you have to reestablish your fiction. This is something I think they've missed with the latest multiplayer only games.
    A new Quake campaign done with the same level of care as the latest Doom campaign, could have been a great way to introduce new players to the universe and reconnected old players.
    Also, perhaps the most overlooked benefits of having a great singleplayer campaign as a foundation for a multiplayer game, is the different way you design a singleplayer game.
    Sure making a singleplayer game drains resources (assuming you put some effort into it), but it also provides unexpected benefits of having ideas, designs, environments, mechanics, physics etc.. you could use in multiplayer. Where lots of those assets, ideas and designs probably never would have been thought of, if you instead go in developing something with a multiplayer only mindset.
    As a result, great multiplayer games and franchises that also have a great singleplayer campaign often as a whole feels much more richer, and the experience more complete.

    Agree but I don't like that, I mean there is a really really big chunk of the Overwatch player base that it's there just because they like shipping or a specific character, and that makes playing with random a chore... Nothing wrong with that though, just saying that if you are there with a competitive mindset and your team is there with a casual mindset it can be very frustrating, this is why I am dying to find a good fixed team to play... Hey Rayce, just found found your channel and im loving what ive seen so far from you. Anyway, personally I'm a huge fan of character building in video games that I play and I also love multiplayer experiences that provide multiple ways to play the game, and various learning curves to accompany them. So overwatch doing both simultaneously is why i immediately fell in love with the game. Now, I haven't seen much from Quake Champions or even played it at all, but I followed Lawbreakers's development pretty closely, as its gameplay caught my attention, only for it to be shattered upon immediately hearing #you'redeadbro, as well as the lead developer being an absolute ego-centric jerk. Simply, i cannot fathom enjoying a mulitplayer game where every character sounds like a bunch of edgy teenagers , as compared to overwatch where you get character building and lore through eliminating certain characters as a certain character, or having two characters just simply be on the same team. Just felt like id provide insight as to why Overwatch garners so much popularity versus Lawbreakers

    Great job man. The voice lines are really one of my favorite aspects of overwatch. I also really love how players have used voice lines and emotes to create brand new memes for the game. One interesting thing u brought up about lawbreakers voice lines which is true seems to be more insults than insight into teh character, I would also argue overwatch has a similar system via sprays and waving hello. Nothing is more embarrassing than being killed by dva ult and she disrespects u with the wave and spray emote in the play of the game or the infamous knocking someone off a ledge and waving good by to them. But the number one insult of them all that will make anyone salty in overwatch is the devil herself, Mei fuckin freezing you and then waving at you before headshoting you. That shit makes me want to flip a table. Ultimate disrespect.

    I think another important part of the fiction is the fact you shift the blame despite reality off your self. Whats brutal about fighting games and arena shooters specifically 1v1 is that you play the game and the reason you lost is solely because you were worse and ontop of it your only reward is a big you lose. In games like overwatch you have the ability to create the fiction that you aren't actually a terrible player.

    IDK what to make of this, and I don't have any stats, but just my observation
    played competitive CS:GO regularly for like a year or two and met like three other women playing?
    started playing overwatch a few months ago, been doing competitive, meet other women every other day
    seems to me like a lot more women play overwatch than CSGO
    i think it's cause of the characters, like maybe there's more there to fit different tastes? also i think the cartoony superhero vibe is less hyper-masculo-dude-bro than like army mcwar dude CSGO counter terrorists beating up iraqis kinda thing
    so i guess what i'm saying is that maybe having diverse characters with personal stories might make games more appealing to more people? i guess that's fairly uncontroversial, whatever

    • @cam-ix2cl
      @cam-ix2cl 7 років тому +3

      I completely agree with this. I think what Blizzard did was they looked at the FPS genre as a whole and saw the same thing everywhere: the same uniforms, the same voices, the same guns, the same drab colors, even the same cookie-cutter characters. If it's sci-fi, throw in some blue lights. The mechanics were fine, but it's like when you listen to a good song for too long. It just gets old. A lot of people haven't gotten worn out from that apocalyptic/underdog super-soldier vibe though, and those seem to be the people who don't like Overwatch. The main complaint I see is "the characters are cartoony," and that's the entire point. That's a major reason why Overwatch took off so well.
      When it comes down to it, Overwatch characters aren't soldiers. They're superheroes with guns. It's supposed to be cartoony, over-the-top, with fairly flat characters. Captain America and Superman aren't exactly known for being super in-depth and three dimensional. Both are some variant of "there are people in danger and I must save them for that is what I do, moral high ground is my sword and plot armor is (usually) my shield." So when Blizzard says "Winston is a gorilla scientist that doesn't like being called a monkey," everything about the character is going to portray that and only that. And that's what makes Overwatch so appealing at first glance to so many people, and I believe that's why it's sticking around the way it is. It's colorful, and actually looks fun to play.

    Using only Nyx is somewhat neat, what about Ranger or at least Blazkowicz since the former keeps looking for a slipgate which takes him back home for 20 years and starts losing his mind, but only a picture of his family keeps him sane. You can even hear it when he earns a kill or respawns.
    "Where the world has taken me now?"
    "For 20 years i've been looking for a way home, i am not going to quit now!" (Plays when you respawn after having your killstreak
    "Too much going on in my head...i can't focus!"
    In case of Blazkowicz he can be pretty cocky when he kills someone but at the same time keep you, the player, to keep going when you respawn.
    "Never give up."
    "Never give in to these people."
    "You're dead...funny" (Most likely after killing Galena)
    In case of Overwatch well, most of the characters have a weak personality. So far i only find Roadhog, Junkrat, Ana, Reinhardt and Torbjorn interesting.

    *"During gameplay, TF2 has far fewer moments of this character building."*
    I disrespectfully disagree, and I am going to explain why. I'm not lying when I say that I am all-too familiar with Team Fortress 2. I've played for over 3,500 hours ( proof: https:/steamcommunity.com/id/cosbolt ) and can say for a fact that that the veracity of that statement is nonexistent.
    Even in my first few hours of playing Team Fortress 2 I notice how each of the characters are dripping with personality. Their voice-lines and domination-lines display so much of this, regardless of the comics or "Meet the Team" videos.
    For example, you can tell that the soldier, from just how he acts, speaks, and fucking humiliates people in-game has a lot of shit about him.
    *"You are the sorriest excuses for soldiers I have ever seen!"*
    *"You sissified maggot scum have just signed your death warrants!"*
    He is a warmongering lunatic, a complete xenophobe who hates all things enemy with a passion.
    *"Your white flag does not stop American bullets."*
    *"I am going to enjoy killing each and every one of you sorry sacks of scum!"*
    *"Words cannot express how much I hate France right now!"*
    Yet he displays a strong sense of honor, respect for the fallen, and a huge loyalty to his team.
    *"You were good son, real good; maybe even the best."*
    *"Godspeed, you magnificent bastard."*
    Notice how these are all *in-game* voice-lines (so many more) that build the characters with such fidelity that I've never seen in any single-player campaign, or even TV show or movie.
    Also, you just played a round of hightower and sawmill to collect the footage, your only frags you showed were on braindead or afk players 7:02. At least try to play the game a bit more before saying some horseshit like that?

    Characters speaking during multiplayer is nothing new. Characters in Gears of War say various comments depending on the situation. Overwatch characters speak more, simply due to the fact that the game has very little internal story. Thus character speech, is needed for the characters to show development.

    Overwatch is a pretty cool game that proves that you don't need a campaign in order to prove for a game to be fun. Besides, when was the last time core multiplayer gameplay focused around the campaign? It's fun to discover the lore yourself if you are interested but it is not essential to the gameplay.
    Also, I do not know why the characters are often criticized. They are most memorable and recognized when compared to other FPS characters; for example, Call of Duty.

    I liked Overwatch a lot at the beginning, but 200+ hours later and I haven't touched it in months. Mostly because Blizzard is blatantly enticing people to buying their loot boxes by releasing limited time items for characters with rarely any pause for players to stack up the in-game currency and because it felt like all the matches became the same or similar enough to each other. The gameplay stopped being as rewarding as it used to be (which I'd imagine happened because I'm constantly matched up against people that play it on a daily basis while I play it casually with friends when the days and times align) and the loot boxes aren't carrying that weight, since most skins and animations are fun for a week or two at the most and then I just don't care.
