The Klingons didn’t just show up at the end, Picard and Worf were exchanging communication with the Klingons throughout the episode. It was an amazingly subtle element of this episode when the series usually beats you over the head with exposition. Watch the episode again and catch what truly made this ending so wonderful!
Yes I remember the very first time I watched it a single comment from Worf seemed a little out of place until the end, then the lightbulb went off in my head when they uncloaked
Oh come on this episode is a B+ at the very least. I would call this a "good" episode. You guys are totally off about those birds of prey showing up. That was a great moment!
The problem is that after you watch the episode and think back on it, it becomes blindingly obvious that the smart thing Picard should’ve done was had the cloaked Klingon ships go to Nelvana 3 and investigate. Which would’ve negated the whole confrontation in the first place.
The appearance of the Klingon ships at the end of the episode is one of my favorite scenes in Star Trek. I didn't see it coming the first time I saw "The Defector" and wasn't sure how the Enterprise would get out of the encounter alive. It was a very Picard maneuver, using diplomacy to outwit the Romulans rather than force. And I think highlights the main trait if humanity in Star Trek. Klingons are aggressive and honor bound. Romulans are sneaky and mistrustful. humans tend to be cooperative and tolerant.
The hints were so subtle that you'd never pick up on 'em the first time you watched the episode. Re-watch it and listen very closely when Picard speaks to Worf. It's so brief you'll blink and miss it. Made it rewarding, though if you're paying attention. And I agree with you
Probably could have used a followup scene, something like... PICARD: Mr. Worf, word from the Klingons? WORF: They have replied in the affirmative, sir.
I loved the reveal of the Klingons showing up. That's my favorite part of the episode (along with Picard asking the Romulan if he was prepared to throw down).
Your videos are really entertaining, keep it coming guys! But C+ is quite strict for this episode (even B-), it has a great build up from the beginning till the end and as other people mentioned in their comments, I don't see any problem with Klingons showing up to help Picard - going into the Neutral Zone is a huge risk especially when the whole thing seems very fishy so it's quite understandable Picard would want some sort of advantage/back up plan in case things go south...
Yeah, it was more that the way they showed up out of nowhere felt like a cheap way to solve everything. If they had talked about the Klingons more beforehand, it wouldn't have felt so out of place. Maybe the Klingons could have said they didn't know if they could get there soon enough or something, so you could be wondering if the Enterprise was going to have to handle things alone. But none of the characters even mentioning to each other that the Klingons are coming didn't make much sense.
@@reverseangle I think you even mentioned it in the review - there is a scene where Picard takes Worf aside but it's not shown what they discussed - it's safe to assume he was telling him to contact the Klingons and ask for a favour otherwise the scene would make no sense... and it's a nice subtle way of connecting the dots for the audience - I actually really like there was no scene where Picard explained his "back up" plan in detail to the audience, it would totally kill the tension of the final stand-off if we knew there are 3 cloaked ships at his disposal
I rarely ever leave comments but I just wanted to say that I am absolutely loving these TNG reviews. You guys are hilarious! I'm currently watching TNG for the first time and have been binge-watching your reviews after stumbling upon one a few days ago. By the way, the thumbnail for this video is perfect.
Don't let these guys put you off any episodes. They like some of the lamest episodes and sh*t on some of the best ones. I enjoy watching these reviews but they're good for laughs only.
3:56 Data is the Ops chief (in the military, we call them "S3" or the "3 Shop"). He is in charge of every department head on the ship and would have regular meetings with the majority of officers. It's reasonable that Data would have that information, on crew morale, for Picard... But to be fair, Troi would also know that as well
This one came up in my feed again. Oh my goodness that artwork for this episode is so hilarious. I didn’t even notice he was driving a Lexus at first. I definitely think this episode is better than average but this review was so entertaining! Looking forward to the movie reviews!
7:41 Klingons didn’t just “show up”, Picard had arranged for the 3 BoPs to shadow the Enterprise (while they stayed cloaked) when they charged into the Neutral Zone. There’s a very short scene where Picard says “Mr Worf, will you report to my ready room?” Which sets the stage for the reveal.
I started to watch TNG for the first time since they made that Re:View in Red Letter Media. And I luckily ran into your show, it’s been great. I have to say I’m loving TNG since the first episode, I didn’t know that the 2 first seasons were supposed to be bad. And this episode is my favorite so far. The dialog was great and it kept me guessing till the last moment. I became a father recently and the romulan’s ultimate sacrifice in hopes for a better universe for his daughter really hit close. Technically the episode is great, the ships look beautiful, music is amazing and the Valley of Chula is breathing and consistent with the romulans. I give this episode an A.
This episode helped me to understand Romulans better and I didn’t guess the twist the first time around so it was very enjoyable. It’s a pretty good ep for early TNG imo. Pls keep these reviews coming!
So, the point about Jarok -- that he could have offered some insight into how to communicate with the Romulans -- is an extremely good one ... If his goal was peace, helping to see common interests probably would have been a better choice than eating Necco Wafers.
I felt that intro sketch was painfully annoying. Data’s ‘acting’ Started off on a bad foot for me. Thanks for throwing in the Blade Runner reference. Once again , your analysis was something I enjoyed more than the actual episode🎉
I'd give it a B for honest effort. It's not on the same level as "Duett" over on DS9, but the bit at the end with the letter to his daughter did tug at my heartstrings.
"Let's see if this admiral would still be loyal if we were going to do some kind of really bad thing that we're not actually going to do" The space equivalent of asking your partner "Would you still love me if I was a polar bear?" and getting pissed when they say no.
The dramatic reveal of the cloaked Klingon ships was a good idea, but the foreshadowing was stunted and clumsy. Picard arranges a conference with Worf, but the next time we see him he's meeting with Data. Later, Picard tells Worf to respond to a message from a Klingon ship, but we never see any of it. The conclusion would have felt far more grounded and satisfying if we'd actually seen some cooperation between the Klingons and the Enterprise.
Hilarious take on the show! I finally figured out why I am a semi functioning moron, I ate too many of those necco wafers as a kid which caused my brain damage, and interest in science fiction!
Wasn't Nelvana a Canadian cartoon protection company. They did the animated part of the Star Eats Christmas Special and movies such as Rock and Rule and a lot of Saturday morning cartoons... Ah I see you added the logo. Lol
The whole star Trek TNG deep space 9 voyager all they were just a joke 😅😅 sure very helpful to fall asleep watching I never managed to see a full episode 😬😬 and I tried hard 😂😂😂

Well phrased. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
subtlety goes over their head
Yes I remember the very first time I watched it a single comment from Worf seemed a little out of place until the end, then the lightbulb went off in my head when they uncloaked
It's given one line and it's just Picard hedging his bets.
Oh come on this episode is a B+ at the very least. I would call this a "good" episode. You guys are totally off about those birds of prey showing up. That was a great moment!
Agreed, the final showdown between Picard and Tomalak was awesome!
That said I do generally like this review series
This is one my top 10 favorite episodes.
improper use of Deuz ex machina, all the way. they were setup as was everything else.
The problem is that after you watch the episode and think back on it, it becomes blindingly obvious that the smart thing Picard should’ve done was had the cloaked Klingon ships go to Nelvana 3 and investigate. Which would’ve negated the whole confrontation in the first place.
Thank you for the Nelvana gag, that is what I was thinking.
"Oh what a fool I've been, to come looking for Lexus in a lair of Hyundais".

Lexus saw Mortal Kombat Annihilation and said, "Get us the man who played Raiden, no matter the cost"
This episode is basically The Hunt for Red October, but if it turned out the sub didn't exist.
It would be cool to see a Romulan driving a Lexus😂😂
and he should have given the Necco Wafer to Data!

"Which has the expected result of eating a Necco Wafer" A better descriptive I'm not sure I could think of. Multiple Thumbs Up!
He should have let Data eat the Necco Wafers!

Just finished binging every video on your channel. Great stuff! Surprised you guys don't have a bigger following yet

I give this episode an A.
The first two seasons are very very bad
Totally disagree. B+ to A-. Great episode and I loved the Klingon part
This episode helped me to understand Romulans better and I didn’t guess the twist the first time around so it was very enjoyable. It’s a pretty good ep for early TNG imo. Pls keep these reviews coming!
This is one of my favorite episodes
Same here, it has many great moments, the tension and stakes are high, perfect acting...
Agree with both of you guys
Picard at one point mentions worf being close with kilngons or a favor which sets up the klingons at end I think
It would have been nice to have a scene in Unfication showing Picard delivering the letter to the Admiral's child.
So, the point about Jarok -- that he could have offered some insight into how to communicate with the Romulans -- is an extremely good one ... If his goal was peace, helping to see common interests probably would have been a better choice than eating Necco Wafers.

PICARD magically appeared
in the scene
I'd give it a B for honest effort. It's not on the same level as "Duett" over on DS9, but the bit at the end with the letter to his daughter did tug at my heartstrings.

Shout out for G'kar from Babylon 5 at 6:30
Interesting fact: the planet Nelvana III is named after the popular Canadian animation studio Nelvana.

Beverly is looking particularly good in this episode. I like what they did with her hair.
Hilarious take on the show! I finally figured out why I am a semi functioning moron, I ate too many of those necco wafers as a kid which caused my brain damage, and interest in science fiction!
at least you didn't eat the $250,000!
The first officer is in charge of crew morale and personnel issues.
Anyone have a list of their rankings?

I have that ship from
eaglemoss
I HAPPEN TO LIKE NECCO WAFERS!!
I’d say solid B+
Woohoo! Finished shift, takeaway food plated and new Reverse Angle TNG uploaded!
Interrogation room (holodeck). ;-)
00:00:49 philistine 😂
Wasn't Nelvana a Canadian cartoon protection company. They did the animated part of the Star Eats Christmas Special and movies such as Rock and Rule and a lot of Saturday morning cartoons... Ah I see you added the logo. Lol
Lexus quality…romulans choose the logical choice
