I always thought it was so fitting to have this joyous tribute to the day when the sun finally comes out be created by a group from England. I'm from the PNW and, like those in the UK, know the jubilation of a blue sky after it was gone "for so long" due to rain and overcast weather. LOL
I understand why you made that assumption that it is fitting, the truth of the matter is that Jeff didn't write it about the sun coming out in his home country of England, but rather in Switzerland. You see, Jeff rented a chalet in the Swiss Alps as a hideaway to write the 1977 album, Out of the Blue, but due to a prolonged stretch of overcast, gloomy weather while there, Jeff suffered from a major case of writer's block. After nearly a fortnight (two weeks) of gray skies, he was just about to leave, having failed to written a single word or note of a single song. But just then, the clouds parted revealing a bright blue sky, and like magic Jeff's writer's block disappeared, as he quickly wrote not just this song, Mr. Blue Sky, but most of the other songs that would go on to appear with it on the double LP, Out of the Blue.

I think the best way to look at the name for the Electric Light Orchestra is that it's a light orchestra (meaning small, with limited instruments compared to a full orchestra) that incorporates electric instruments, such as electric guitar, keyboards, and synthesizers. ELO were among the first to engage in electronic voice processing, where the signal from a microphone was fed through a synthesizer to get the rather strange sounding voice. I believe it's the keyboard player who sang the synthesizer-processed lyrics.
This group was so different than anything else in the 70s & 80s. You definitely need to check out more of their huge catalog. I recommend either Telephone Line or Evil Woman next!
Jeff Lynne (who is from my home City of Birmingham, UK) is a fantastic muscian and producer. E.L.O have loads of great songs and they sound just as good live as they do on the studio versions. My favourite is 'All Over The World'.
Krizz I love your hip hop, but even more I love your personality and the fact that you not only know but honestly appreciate different songs and genres. Imho THAT is what makes a true artist.
The hairstyle depends on if it’s natural curly or if it’s a perm. If it’s naturally curly then we’ll call it an Afro but it’s not then it’s a perm. Jeff Lynne is natural so it’s an Afro.
Well my love of ELO made this reaction pop up on my feed. So glad it did! As a producer, you have to appreciate the superb production of that track. But I bet you didn't pick up on the words spoken at the very end? It was the last track on side one of the album, and the synth voice said "Please turn me over". Now that's cool! I wore 3 albums out playing it through on repeat.
was mr blue sky the first synthesised voice Yes, "Mr. Blue Sky" by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is notable for being one of the first songs to use a synthesised voice. The song was written by Jeff Lynne and released in 1978 as part of their album Out of the Blue. The distinctive robotic vocal sound in the song was created using a vocoder, an early voice synthesizer.

The Electric Light Orchestra was the brainchild of Roy Wood in 1968, Roy was the main song writer and lead guitarist with the Birmingham band, The Move from 1966 until 1972. In February 1970, the main song wtiter and lead guitarist with fellow Birmingham band The Idle Race, Jeff Lynne left that band to join The Move after Wood's second invitation. Wood had told Lynne about his plan to form a new band with an integral orchestral section to complement the guitars, bass and drums, Lynne was keen to join in Wood's new project, so they joined forces in The Move under the same management and record company. The very first ELO song was originally intended as a 'B' side for The Move, it was written by Lynne and was about an escaped prisoner who had a number instead of a name, his number was 10538. After The Move had recorded "10538" and the other members of the band had gone home for the night, Roy Wood stayed behind in the recording studio, he started playing some heavy riffs on a cheap Chinese cello that he had recently purchased. Wood overdubbed fourteen cello parts onto the recording of 10538, he later said that it sounded like a heavy metal orchestra, Wood played the tape to Lynne and he loved what Wood had done to his song. Lynne exclaimed that is the ELO sound, he renamed the song "10538 Overture". This was in July 1970, Wood and Lynne wrote nine songs between them for the Electric Light Orchestra album, which was released in the UK in November 1971. Due to a dispute with their management about ELO's future musical direction, Wood left the band in June 1972 when "10538 Overture" was in the UK's top 10 singles chart. Wood created his Glam Rock outfit Wizzard, they played their first gig at a Rock & Roll festival in Wembley Stadium, London, in August 1972. Wizzard had a string of hit records between 1972 and 1975, including two number ones with "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers", their evergreen seasonal song "I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday" is played every December on UK radio stations.
The great Jeff Lynne . Possibly the most humble rock star in history. Grounded by his fathers teachings which he carried through his career. One of the greatest singer / songwriters of all time. His back catalogue stacks upto any band in history. Rockaria , all over the world, last train to london, turn to stone, 1079 overture, roll over beethoven, diary of horace wimp, dont bring me down .And I could name 20 more . Classic band ,along with The Beatles, the Stones ,Pink Floyd ,Queen and Oasis. British rock royalty
1) Afro. 2) watch Guardians if the Galaxy # 2 - intro with baby Groot 3) Jeff Lyne loved the Beatles incorporating orchestra into their songs so formed ELO as an orchestral rock group. Albeit with lots of synthesizers too. 4) loved ELO at the time. Lynne disbanded them after many albums and hits. moved in different direction. 5) Lynne part of Traveling Wilburys. 6) Lynne helped produced Beatles final song Now and Then.
If you didn't catch it, the piano sounds at the very end is saying (Please Turn Me Over) since this was the last song on one side of the vinyl album. So they're letting you know to flip your record to the other side. I need to listen to more ELO songs, but this one and Don't Bring Me Down are my faves. :)
Jeff Lynne (Lead Singer/Guitars) his hair is a Natural, I can't speak for the rest of the band, but I suspect they're all rocking perms. ELO were one of the great bands of the 70's and early 80's. Most of the comments have listed most of their Greatest Hits, but I didn't see these 2, so I'm gonna throw them out there for your consideration. "Can't Get It Out of My Head" and the instrumental, "Fire On High". Both are phenomenal. I think that I know where you may have heard "Mr. Blue Sky" before, it is played during the title credits of "Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2" Also, I wanted to say that I love your channel. I respect you and your opinions, and your knowledge and openness to new/different genres is a breath of fresh air. I was a musician for 40+ years, unfortunately arthritis has sidelined me, but I still love music. From the Delta Blues to Big Band Swing to Country and Rock to Country Rock and Motown. I'm not a big fan of Rap and Hip-Hop, but I do appreciate and respect it as an artform. About the only thing that I absolutely just can't listen to is Opera, though I do appreciate and respect it too as an artform, and the talent that it takes to have such control of their voice, it is truly amazing. Just not my cup of tea, as they say. I just wanted to thank you for your reactions, as they are always fun, and I love watching your face when you catch the hook, or realize just how absolutely great some acts or songs truly are. Anyway, thanks again.

Jeff Lynne was a huge Beatles fan. He formed ELO after hearing the Beatles album Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and just about every ELO song was an attempt to emulate the sound of that album, including the orchestral instrumentation. BTW, the hairstyle was a 'Fro.
E.L.O.are better than the beatles, Jeff Lynne may have been George Harrisons best friend, but he towered above him. @@jennywren7822 Bullshit. The Beatles, over four albums - A Hard Days Night, Help!, Rubber Soul, and Revolver - turned rock'n roll from a fad into an art form. Jeff Lynne was smart enough to see that, but he was a follower, not an innovator.

@jamesdisalvo814 the Beatles were a phenomenon PARDON where do you get that from, how old are you? 10. Elvis to you then was a nobody, have you heard of him?, Jeff Lynne was the phenomenon, the Beatles were just a band, the only one worth a mention is John Lennon, the others mediocre and couldn't lick Jeff Lynne's boots. More background: listen to this sing in context! Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is part of a musical suite called the "Concerto for a Rainy Day", which is the third side of their 1977 double album, Out of the Blue. The suite consists of four songs: "Standin' in the Rain" "Big Wheels" "Summer and Lightning" "Mr. Blue Sky" The suite explores the theme of weather and emotions, with Mr. Blue Sky representing the joyous culmination of a rainy day giving way to sunshine. It is often considered the highlight of the album and one of ELO's most iconic songs.
It’s in the name. Electric Light Orchestra. A modern orchestra not band but orchestra. Maybe not a full orchestra but enough to do. All using electric instruments. The modern day orchestra.
@ well it’s both. The name is a play on the idea of of what a modern orchestra along with the use of the terminology of what people thought of the use electricity at the turn of century when it started to be used.
Jeff did not produce any Beatles albums. He produced 2 old Lennon demos for the Beatles Anthology project, and many solo songs by George, Paul and Ringo.
E.L.O. had one one of the first light shows. ELO's first concert was on April 16, 1972 at the Greyhound Pub in Croydon, Surrey. The band's line-up included: Jeff Lynne (lead singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer, Musician Roy Wood, Bev Bevan (drummer), Bill Hunt (keyboards and French hornm, Andy Craig (cello), Mike Edwards (cello), Wilfred Gibson (violin), Hugh McDowell (cello) , Richard Tandy (bass) Roy Wood played guitar, bass, cello, saxophone, oboe, percussion, keyboards and vocals.
I’m sure I read once that John Lennon when asked what he thought of ELO’s. Music said they were the band the Beatles would have become if they had stayed together
One of the best bands ever Period. How Jeff Lynne has never been given a knighthood is beyond me when you see the honours handed out to other lesser musicians is beyond me.
This is actually part of "Concerto for a Rainy Day" which is a whole side of the "Out of the Blue" album. (Absolute EPIC album, every song is awesome) Four songs in total. Jeff Lynne is certified genius. Writer, Producer, Singer, Musician, and part of two massive groups, ELO and The Traveling Wilburys. Produced a BUNCH of stuff, for a plethora of big names, he has an almost endless catalog. The hair is a just a perm. The keyboard player Richard Tandy just had long straight hair. ELO were among the first to engage in electronic voice processing, where the signal from a microphone was fed through a synthesizer to get the rather strange sounding voice. I believe it's the keyboard player who sang the synthesizer-processed lyrics.
They also had a great Light show with laser lights reflecting off the instruments into the stars or stadium.
"Light Orchestras" were a thing (the BBC had their own light orchestra) and played more popular music than traditional orchestras.
Showdown is my fav ELO song.
Congratulations on your success man, Platinum is so cool.
I totally agree 👍🏼
The hairstyle depends on if it’s natural curly or if it’s a perm. If it’s naturally curly then we’ll call it an Afro but it’s not then it’s a perm. Jeff Lynne is natural so it’s an Afro.
Well my love of ELO made this reaction pop up on my feed. So glad it did! As a producer, you have to appreciate the superb production of that track. But I bet you didn't pick up on the words spoken at the very end? It was the last track on side one of the album, and the synth voice said "Please turn me over". Now that's cool! I wore 3 albums out playing it through on repeat.
was mr blue sky the first synthesised voice
Yes, "Mr.
Krizz, all valid comments below Jeff is a fascinating character, well worth delving into also a video knocking about on UA-cam as well worth a watch called Mr Blue Sky. He wrote songs but also wrote and produced songs for other Artists as well "The Beatles, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison, he wrote "A Love So Beautiful for Roy as well as being one of the Wilburys with so many big stars
ELO/ Jeff Lynne equals GOAT top 10 groups of all time IMO.
Top 5 , no doubt
@@michellefranco5648 Top 2, baby! They're my 1a and Zeppelin is my 1b.
@@Cosmo-Kramer
My top 3 in order are , Dire Straits ,ELO and The Tragically Hip.
Hey Cosmo , have you ever listened to Colin James? If not you should., I have read a few of your posts , I am pretty sure you will enjoy.
I can suggest a couple of songs to start with if you like
@@michellefranco5648 I have not. Gimme your favorite track of his and I'll let you know what I think. :)
Love ELO. Evil Woman and Telephone line from them are great too. Please check out Tragically Hip New Orleans is sinking studio version 🙏 Great reaction and Peace Krizz 🙏✌️☮️
This song brings back SOOOOOO many memories. Thanks for listening to it.
PS: Covid brain fog sucks, doesn't it? As a sufferer, I know what you're going through
"Mr. Blue Sky" is the final track of the four song masterpiece '"Concerto For A Rainy Day." From side 3 of their seventh studio album, "Out Of The Blue." The final vocoder line is "Please turn me over."
It is actually please turn over now i remember Jeff Lynne on Kenny Everett radio show on Capitol Radio and it was a quiz question and the prize was a double gold disc signed by the band
Man I was shocked when I first heard some ELO, back in the '70s. Violins and Chellos mixed in rock music? Wow! Jeff Lynn is a musical genius!
The 'out of the blue ' was a great album. This says at the end, please turn me over, cos it was the last song on side one, also the album art. Work, was out of this world...being a spaceship.😃
This is on the 3rd side of the double album Out Of The Blue.
It is called Concerto For A Rainy Day and it is a must listen!
By the way the last line in the vocoder says "Please turn me over", which refers to the album and to go to side 4.
Grew up with ELO in the 70's and 80's. They always had hits in the UK. Saw them a few years back. Best concert ever.
1) Afro. 2) watch Guardians if the Galaxy # 2 - intro with baby Groot
3) Jeff Lyne loved the Beatles incorporating orchestra into their songs so formed ELO as an orchestral rock group.
Check out Big Wheels, or even the entire "Concerto for a Rainy Day" from ELO's Out of the Blue album.
Blue Sky" before, it is played during the title credits of "Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2"
Also, I wanted to say that I love your channel.
Love this song. Actually, I really love ELO. They have some great songs 🎵 🎶 Thanks for this reaction, Krizz. 🙂
Was just watching the KOD tour. Luv ua Kali
ELO is my second favorite band of all time. 💙I saw them in concert in the early 80s, and their light show was phenomenal for the time. 💫✨💫 We used to call the hair a "Fro". Now we call it a "Bro Fro". 😄Jeff Lynne is the lead vocalist for ELO. I Love Mr. Blue Sky!! 💙🌤💙
The Beatles were mediocre, and at their beginning amateurs, l was a huge beatles fan, went to see them in Worcester England couldn't hear anything because of the screaming including me, but none can hold a candle to Jeff Lynne ad his GENIUS.
Listen to TIGHTROPE and you'll see how extraordinary Jeff Lynne is a very modest unassuming man who doesn't want fame, Paul McCartney is so far up his own backside and can't sing at all
@@jennywren7822 Bullshit. The Beatles, over four albums - A Hard Days Night, Help!, Rubber Soul, and Revolver - turned rock'n roll from a fad into an art form. Jeff Lynne was smart enough to see that, but he was a follower, not an innovator.
@@jennywren7822 Look, all Jeff Lynne was doing with ELO was trying to make sides 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, etc. of Sergeant Pepper. ELO was a band; The Beatles were a cultural phenomenon. There's really no comparison between the two.
@jamesdisalvo814 the Beatles were a phenomenon PARDON where do you get that from, how old are you? 10.
Elvis to you then was a nobody, have you heard of him?,
Jeff Lynne was the phenomenon, the Beatles were just a band, the only one worth a mention is John Lennon, the others mediocre and couldn't lick Jeff Lynne's boots.
Let's get this straight, about phenomenons, Elvis wanted to meet the Beatles, the beatles were at their peak, Elvis on the decline, Lennon and Co just sat staring at Elvis in awe till Elvis said if you're just going to stare I'm going to bed.
Jeff Lynne's a genius with no airs and graces, isn't interested in fame, doesn't think he's god.
TIGHTROPE against HELP etc there's no comparison, I'm 77 years old and have lived through it all.
Their live show at Wembley is great. They also did the sound track for a little-known film called Zanadu.
Hi Chris love this band. Smile hugs!😊
The reason you initially thought it sounded like Queen is it was recorded at the same studio in Munich and the engineer was the same (Reinhold Mack, aka Mack). Oh and in Britain we called hair like that a perm.
Jeff Lynn's ELO just finished their farewell tour. It may be the most amazing show I've seen in decades. The music was flawless.
I'm seeing them in concert next July for the first time. Can't wait.
Me too Manchester 10 th counting the days have a great time
Mr Blue Sky was used in the Guardians of the Galaxy with little Groot plugging in his stereo when all the others were fighting aliens.
ELO are awesome and i love them ❤ Formed in Birmingham England in 1970 by Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan 🇬🇧🏴
Jeff Lynne and. ELO is amazing! The harmonies are incredible, the musicianship is out of this world. One of my favorite bands ever! "Turn to stone", "Telephone Line", "Evil Woman", "All Over The World". Keep going down this rabbit hole.
🇬🇧
70s & 80s were the decades of the PERM. Even I had my hair permed. I loved it.
Mr Blue Sky is the last of four , “ songs for a rainy day “ .. I always think of it as a modern four seasons
Hair style called " The Natural ". Jeff was also part of " The Traveling Wilburys ".
More background: listen to this sing in context! Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is part of a musical suite called the "Concerto for a Rainy Day", which is the third side of their 1977 double album, Out of the Blue. The suite consists of four songs:
"Standin' in the Rain"
"Big Wheels"
"Summer and Lightning"
"Mr. Blue Sky"
The suite explores the theme of weather and emotions, with Mr. Blue Sky representing the joyous culmination of a rainy day giving way to sunshine. It is often considered the highlight of the album and one of ELO's most iconic songs.
The happiest song ever as voted by the BBC radio listeners. And the only song to feature a fire extinguisher as an instrument.
I'm in the UK, I collected and sent a 50th anniversary Fender Stratocaster to Jeff Lynne in California from Arbiter. Made in the USA?
It’s in the name. Electric Light Orchestra. A modern orchestra not band but orchestra. Maybe not a full orchestra but enough to do. All using electric instruments. The modern day orchestra.
A 'light' orchestra, meaning small, with a comparatively limited selection of instruments.
@ well it’s both. The name is a play on the idea of of what a modern orchestra along with the use of the terminology of what people thought of the use electricity at the turn of century when it started to be used.
Nice reaction, He produced some of the Beatles albums and their solo projects, you can really hear that in this song. imo
Apparently written when they were on location somewhere and it rained for several days and then the blue sky appeared. Hence this song.
It was used in the opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Great choice to start with too.
The lead singer is Jeff Lyne he is an absolute legend.
Don't you think "absolute legends" deserve to have their names spelled correctly??
Would have been something to see you collaborate with those guys.
Elo is a hidden gem, they're so good. But I want to know what would be my must listen hip hop for a beginner
If you can listen to this song and not smile, nail the lid on, you're dead.
"Don't bring me Down" is one of their "cheesiest" pop songs, just to show how good they were. That was not even close to their best, and it was a huge hit.
🇬🇧
Krizz, now you need to react to ELO "Telephone Line" 👌👌👌👌👌
Oh, and check out Turn to Stone too !
My wife and I saw them in Nashville in November. They were fantastic and will be much missed.
Aren’t they just marvelous 😍!
Welcome to another special corner of the music world ! Thanks for the great reactions as always
Evil woman, can’t get it out of my head, Birmingham blues, strange magic, turn to stone, telephone line
Still doing tours to this day Jeff lynne was part of the travelling wilburys for most of their songs he is a brummie
*all of their songs
Turn to stone is another great song. ✌️❤️
On a local UK radio station last year, this was voted the world's most happiest song. In a lust of five hundred nominees
You had me cracking up talking about your head. I needed that laugh - Thank you 😂😂
ELO IS dope!! Jeff Lynne is a musical GENIUS! There are so many good songs by them. “Midnight Blue” is one of my favorites and “The Diary of Horace Wimp” really showcases the orchestra too. They are truly a unique band.
