Actually, i have a fun story about the phlog. We were on dustbowl last, and we were pushed back to spawn doors by 2 pocketed phlog pyros. I used the stock invis and spycicle to back cap.
I have a less fun story. We were also on Dustbowl's last part, we were getting phlogged, and I saw no-one was playing Spy. I went Spy, snuck into a corner at the single door exit, then I backstabbed the enemy Pyro (who was annihilating my team) just after he phlog-taunted. My team voted to kick me for "cheating." I'm _guessing_ they misread the kill-feed and thought I was a stinking sniper bot. It was a casual match. No one asked me if I was a robot.

Last game, I thought I'd use the uber at the small enemy group near the control point, but decided to risk instead. Me and my Phlog pocket went to their spawn right at the beginning of a large respawn wave and THEN unleashed the devastating combo. All while my Pyro complained how much Phlog sucks without airblast.
I'm a regular medic as well. When I see a Phlog Pyro, I always gotta go to stock Uber. When I see one on the enemy team though, I keep the Vaccinator close; crit shutdown is pretty big.
As a demo that plays pyro: The phlog is bad if there are 6 demos and 6 meds on the enemy team cuz everything dies instantly and all you can do is flank or watch as your team dies.
The true evil step: It is possible to cancel the phlog taunt early, increasing the crit uptime and giving you invulnerability for the start of your rampage. I will not tell you how to do this, because its a one way ticket to the lowest circle of hell. Whatever you do, don't phlog cancel. It is the epitome of evil and will cause nothing but limitless suffering for everyone, including you.
Correct me if im wrong but i think the only possible way to cancel phloggers taunt and start the carnage earlier, is for the enemy pyro to airblast the taunting phloggers, which is the fault of the enemy pyro itself, idk other way
If you must know the secret, anything that can force the Pyro to move much will cancel the taunt. Jumping on top of someone is the most reliable, but airblast, explosive knock back, map geometry, or moving map parts work too. Use this information wisely. Or, rather, don’t use it at all. You have been warned.

thank god the loose cannon exists, i remember a casual match on dustbowl, when suddently a pyro ran towards my team with the phlog crits with a medic giving him uber on the back, but the double donks i did made them waste the uber and the crits the loose cannon is a counter to that hellish combo, at least
going cleaver and wrap assassin against this combo(especially if they have a medic) usually provides enough burst to kill the pyro before they kill you tbh. hit both shots with no fear of a reflect and bam suddenly the pyro is pissing blood. only a partial scattergun hit is needed to put them in the grave if theyre solo or a popped uber from their satanic associate

I thought the hidden step was gonna be how you can land on an enemy, press M2 then skip the taunt animation and get instant crits. Of course hard to pull off but yeaaa pretty nasty little secret.
Hidden hidden step: if you use the phlog taunt on top of an enemy player or moving payload, it cancels the taunt but still grants you the initial invulnerability and additional crit time. It's difficult to pull off tho.
I love it. Unironically. I love going braindead when the other team has tryhards or when your own team is shit. The stress of playing medic just gets to you sometime you-know? Edit: i do not love it anymore. It would be great if it gained charge solely from its own flames.

That sounds way too harsh. The Phlog itself isn't that big of a problem. Hell, it's arguably the worst flamethrower. The biggest issue is how easy it is to charge with the Scorch Shot. Nerf that thing and the Phlog becomes fine.
@@Junya01 But the Detonator actually requires you to aim and time your detonations properly. You can't just blindly spam it. Not to mention that Scorch Shot also has a bigger damage potential due to the bouncing flare.
I'm a pyro main, i know how to make combos and reflect.. but in the other hand we have this.. "thing". I'm not gonna lie, i like playing with it but sometimes i know it will ruin someone's day-
Flamethrower/Degreaser: Airblast, encourages teamwork and protecting your team. Backburner/Dragon'sFury: Encourages a less supportive playstyle and instead a more offensive one, but you can spycheck, shield yourself or even protect your teammates with airblast but not as effectively. Phlogistinator: *GENOCIDE RUN*
The mmph charge is too easy to get especially by spamming flares and if you have a pocket medic surgery attached to you 24/7 then the enemy team might as well just not be in the server. Also, it essentially bypasses a vaccinator charge. A slight nerf to it would reduce the crits to minicrits and increase the fire damage requirement from 300 to 450. As for MvM It would need to get an upgrade for say 250 credits to give it back the crits on mmph.
This does make the weapon more balanced on paper but the lack of airblast is too much of a downside now. The entire mechanic of the phlog (in my opinion) is to take away the airblast and it's incredible damage on reflected projectiles in exchange for higher damage overall. You could tweak this to instead require 250 fire damage and keep everything the same so it's not a downgrade but a weapon meant for offence and playing aggresively.
Phlog is already the worst flamethrower against an even slightly competent team due to its downsides. The entire design of this weapon is deeply flawed and the only thing that can save it from it, is a full rework. If I was in charge I would flip its concept upside down: I would turn off the primary fire until the Mmmph meter is full, but make the airblast cheaper, make it ignite enemies, and make it "eat" projectiles instead of reflecting them (and convert the consumed projectiles into the mmmph meter). It would make the weapon actually unique, skill-based, and more fun to play against. And also, it would teach new players more skillful ways, unlike the current phlog that does the opposite.
If you reduce the crits to minicrits, it's just a dead weapon. Its one and only purpose is high burst damage, and a minicrit flamethrower doesn't do enough.

I wanna put my thoughts up. Phlog trades off airblast for your aggressive gameplay. Throughout my time using this thing, it's magic. I don't get pocketed by medics that it's difficult to pull M+W1s off but being able to maneuver and control your opponent's directions with fire is amazing. It's made for those aggressive play styles to Crowd Control enemies in a choke point. I see it bad at first, but when I played it again with a certain playstyle, it does helps the team as the enemy team gets fatigued because of your strong flames. It takes skill to not need a medic and singlehandedly kill a group with the phoog.
I think the phlog should probably just have a “50% slower healing rate on wearer” or something, to prevent the medic strat. Other than that it’s pretty balanced. My tweak idea to fix the scorch shot is to just remove the stunlock mechanic
I think there's also a way to cancel the taunt animation earlier, granting you extra seconds of crit, and invulnerability while moving for a short while.
The best way to nerf this item is to reduce the healing recieved by medics to 25% while active, and Uber lasting only 1/5th as long. The combo is absolutely busted, but if the person has a pocket then it becomes infuriating. Edit: Disregard what I said about the Phlog, just fucking nerf the shit out of the scorch shot and buff the Phlog by making it eat projectiles instead.
nah, id say just remove uber on the pyro who uses the phlog. There is almost no reason to even uber a teammate when the ubercharge will only last for 1.60 seconds. I would keep the normal healing rate though. What makes the pyro + medic combo so broken to begin with is the fact that they can chew through enemies with very little skill and be more effective that a soldier or demoman boyfriend so removing that would be enough to cut the weapon's strength in half. There is no need to beat an already dead horse at that point. Ironically, even if i said that "there is no need to beat a dead horse", I still think there's an exception to that rule. I'd say only make the dmg count for the primary itself, not from a secondary or melee dmg since 300 dmg isn't too hard to pull of when you can chip enemies from range with the detonator. That way, pyro's are forced to go close range to even get a use out of this thing and get fucked in the ass by classes that he would normally be able to stand up against like soldiers or demomen if he had airblast.
It's still not as strong as just ubering a demo or soldier instead to be honest. Unless you're playing on bad chokepoint maps (cough cough dustbowl) you will always have enough time to just run away from the pyro while the charge runs out, unless you're playing as heavy.
No. Forcing pyro to give up airblast, his strongest mechanic, for just minicrits, which isn't all that strong given how easy it is for the enemy team to shut you down, and how little damage you'd be pumping out, is such a bad deal, that even if it only took 50 damage to charge I doubt anyone would use it.

Play phlog with the thermal thruster it's honestly a more rewarding experience considering you cannot cheese your mmph and it encourages flanking and rewards good positioning
I think, Phlog as a concept is a very interesting weapon, but it got kinda ruined by scorch shit So here's my suggestion to rework Phlog: 1) Afterburn doesn't charge the "mmmph" meter 2) Shotguns and melee weapons charge the "mmmph" meter These changes will force phlog pyros to actually engage in a fight and take risks in order to get crits Axtinguisher would also become more useful with Phlog, since it can charge a good chunk of your meter But this change won't make flareguns completely useless. Flaregun and Manmelter would be great for charging your meter from long range, that actually required you to aim Detonator would let Pyro flank more and be more mobile after popping his crits

I just bought a strange specialized killstreak for the heck of it (I literally have never used the weapon and I have 1000 hours in the game) and I got a 25 ks the first time equipping it. I also never go pyro, yet I got 60 kills with it in a single game of dustbowl
I respect phlog pyros who stratigicaly pop their crits in very unexpected areas, However i dont respect phlog pyros who have a medic 24/7 up their ass who just mindlessly spam m1 with the scorch shot to get their meter filled up and instantly stomps a coordinated pub push

I started my Pyro journey trying my hardest to be a good airblaster, and helping the team out as much as possible. Then, I had a showdown with a soldier who launched basically his entire reserve ammo at me. Every single airblast I deployed was mistimed and I had no chance. It was at that moment I realised that giving up airblast for brain-dead crits was a straight upgrade for me. Reject skill, embrace casual destruction
5:06 as someone who uses the phlog from time to time (every time I fight cancer and just want to shut my brain off w scorch and get bonuses for it), id say this is really just because of how the phlog is built. It's sacrificing all its defensive capability for offensive. So if you're _on defense_ your teams general setup will be making up for that; the biggest struggle will be catching the enemy off guard and not having to walk through all the crossfire first. On offense it's a lot harder... turns out minmaxing doesn't work that well when counter strats are easy and common. Soldiers and demos are pain and sentries will absolutely shut you down even worse than before. It's also why stock Uber and quick pair so well. It covers up the phlog's main weakness, defense, and just allows the pyro to go all-out. But hey, walking right over sticky spam and wm1ing the demo always gives me the satisfaction of more than likely making the guy feel like a chump!
Your videos are amazing man. I dont see a lot of people talk about a weapon called "Overdose". I would be really happy if you made a youtube video about the "Overdose". There is actually a lot to talk about this weapon like the "-15% damage penalty" , it does absolutely nothing but with the other stat you can run around faster. It is just a better Syringe Gun. And you can also talk about a weapon called: "Blutsauger" This weapon is really fun, you get 3 health by just shooting at an enemy. This is the best weapon for the "Battle Medic" play style. We also have a weapon named: "Crusaders Crossbow" this weapon works completely different than the other syringe guns. With this thing you shoot arrows! But even though it takes away the thing to just sniff glue, you can now HEAL enemies with the arrows, overall the best primary weapon for the "Medic" class.
This video is awesome, as your videos always are. Although I will say, I don’t think the phlog is the most hated weapon anymore. That title probably belongs to either the scorch shot or……yeah I can’t think of any others
great video, you should do one talking about how Gas Passer is meta in competitive and how to run it in competitive sixes along side the phlog and the hot hand
What I’d like to personally recommend: this isn’t the easiest thing to pull off BUT if your enemy is just out of phlog range, switch to your scorch shot for a free mini crit (if you’ve managed to catch them on fire for the moment you had) and to slow them down, then with that split second you have switch back to phlog and burn them down. I will not overstate the need to close that gap is fucking everything, especially if you are not running powerjack (I say because I run homewrecker). If you have no medic (for some ungodly reason) it might be a safe bet to pair up with a soldier with the conch or a scout with mad milk, OR if you are feeling particularly evil, pair up with a sniper running the Sydney sleeper or maybe jarate, if he’s running huntsman and flanking, or again, a soldier with buff banner, because fire mini crits and even afterburn mini-crits are nothing to scoff at, and with a buff banner soldier you’ll get a good speed boost like with powerjack. Some team communication will maximise this weapon’s potential.
Maining phlog for awhile taught me how to surf at the next level. Activating Mmmph than hitting the perfect surf to close distance and melt a soldier is a huge dopamine rush.(like this 5:08) It's more satisfying than air-blasting IMO.

Flamethrower/Degreaser: Airblast, encourages teamwork and protecting your team.
Backburner/Dragon'sFury: Encourages a less supportive playstyle and instead a more offensive one, but you can spycheck, shield yourself or even protect your teammates with airblast but not as effectively.

The mmph charge is too easy to get especially by spamming flares and if you have a pocket medic surgery attached to you 24/7 then the enemy team might as well just not be in the server. Also, it essentially bypasses a vaccinator charge. A slight nerf to it would reduce the crits to minicrits and increase the fire damage requirement from 300 to 450. As for MvM It would need to get an upgrade for say 250 credits to give it back the crits on mmph.
This does make the weapon more balanced on paper but the lack of airblast is too much of a downside now.
The entire mechanic of the phlog (in my opinion) is to take away the airblast and it's incredible damage on reflected projectiles in exchange for higher damage overall.
You could tweak this to instead require 250 fire damage and keep everything the same so it's not a downgrade but a weapon meant for offence and playing aggresively.
Phlog is already the worst flamethrower against an even slightly competent team due to its downsides. The entire design of this weapon is deeply flawed and the only thing that can save it from it, is a full rework. If I was in charge I would flip its concept upside down: I would turn off the primary fire until the Mmmph meter is full, but make the airblast cheaper, make it ignite enemies, and make it "eat" projectiles instead of reflecting them (and convert the consumed projectiles into the mmmph meter). It would make the weapon actually unique, skill-based, and more fun to play against. And also, it would teach new players more skillful ways, unlike the current phlog that does the opposite.
The only thing "op" about using the phlog, are the Schorsch shot and power jack.
If you reduce the crits to minicrits, it's just a dead weapon. Its one and only purpose is high burst damage, and a minicrit flamethrower doesn't do enough.

Phlog trades off airblast for your aggressive gameplay. Throughout my time using this thing, it's magic. I don't get pocketed by medics that it's difficult to pull M+W1s off but being able to maneuver and control your opponent's directions with fire is amazing.
It's made for those aggressive play styles to Crowd Control enemies in a choke point. I see it bad at first, but when I played it again with a certain playstyle, it does helps the team as the enemy team gets fatigued because of your strong flames.
It takes skill to not need a medic and singlehandedly kill a group with the phoog.

The best way to nerf this item is to reduce the healing recieved by medics to 25% while active, and Uber lasting only 1/5th as long. The combo is absolutely busted, but if the person has a pocket then it becomes infuriating.
Edit: Disregard what I said about the Phlog, just fucking nerf the shit out of the scorch shot and buff the Phlog by making it eat projectiles instead.

nah, id say just remove uber on the pyro who uses the phlog. There is almost no reason to even uber a teammate when the ubercharge will only last for 1.60 seconds. I would keep the normal healing rate though. What makes the pyro + medic combo so broken to begin with is the fact that they can chew through enemies with very little skill and be more effective that a soldier or demoman boyfriend so removing that would be enough to cut the weapon's strength in half. There is no need to beat an already dead horse at that point. Ironically, even if i said that "there is no need to beat a dead horse", I still think there's an exception to that rule. I'd say only make the dmg count for the primary itself, not from a secondary or melee dmg since 300 dmg isn't too hard to pull of when you can chip enemies from range with the detonator. That way, pyro's are forced to go close range to even get a use out of this thing and get fucked in the ass by classes that he would normally be able to stand up against like soldiers or demomen if he had airblast.
It's still not as strong as just ubering a demo or soldier instead to be honest. Unless you're playing on bad chokepoint maps (cough cough dustbowl) you will always have enough time to just run away from the pyro while the charge runs out, unless you're playing as heavy.

No. Forcing pyro to give up airblast, his strongest mechanic, for just minicrits, which isn't all that strong given how easy it is for the enemy team to shut you down, and how little damage you'd be pumping out, is such a bad deal, that even if it only took 50 damage to charge I doubt anyone would use it.

I think, Phlog as a concept is a very interesting weapon, but it got kinda ruined by scorch shit
So here's my suggestion to rework Phlog:
1) Afterburn doesn't charge the "mmmph" meter
2) Shotguns and melee weapons charge the "mmmph" meter
These changes will force phlog pyros to actually engage in a fight and take risks in order to get crits
Axtinguisher would also become more useful with Phlog, since it can charge a good chunk of your meter
But this change won't make flareguns completely useless.
Flaregun and Manmelter would be great for charging your meter from long range, that actually required you to aim
Detonator would let Pyro flank more and be more mobile after popping his crits

I just bought a strange specialized killstreak for the heck of it (I literally have never used the weapon and I have 1000 hours in the game) and I got a 25 ks the first time equipping it. I also never go pyro, yet I got 60 kills with it in a single game of dustbowl

I started my Pyro journey trying my hardest to be a good airblaster, and helping the team out as much as possible.
Then, I had a showdown with a soldier who launched basically his entire reserve ammo at me. Every single airblast I deployed was mistimed and I had no chance.
It was at that moment I realised that giving up airblast for brain-dead crits was a straight upgrade for me.

5:06 as someone who uses the phlog from time to time (every time I fight cancer and just want to shut my brain off w scorch and get bonuses for it), id say this is really just because of how the phlog is built. It's sacrificing all its defensive capability for offensive. So if you're _on defense_ your teams general setup will be making up for that; the biggest struggle will be catching the enemy off guard and not having to walk through all the crossfire first.
On offense it's a lot harder... turns out minmaxing doesn't work that well when counter strats are easy and common. Soldiers and demos are pain and sentries will absolutely shut you down even worse than before.
It's also why stock Uber and quick pair so well. It covers up the phlog's main weakness, defense, and just allows the pyro to go all-out.
But hey, walking right over sticky spam and wm1ing the demo always gives me the satisfaction of more than likely making the guy feel like a chump!
The Phlog is designed to kill and stomp newer players. This alone makes it kind of lame in my eyes.

I would be really happy if you made a youtube video about the "Overdose". There is actually a lot to talk about this weapon like the "-15% damage penalty" , it does absolutely nothing but with the other stat you can run around faster. It is just a better Syringe Gun. And you can also talk about a weapon called: "Blutsauger"
This weapon is really fun, you get 3 health by just shooting at an enemy. This is the best weapon for the "Battle Medic" play style. We also have a weapon named: "Crusaders Crossbow" this weapon works completely different than the other syringe guns. With this thing you shoot arrows! But even though it takes away the thing to just sniff glue, you can now HEAL enemies with the arrows, overall the best primary weapon for the "Medic" class.
This video is awesome, as your videos always are. Although I will say, I don’t think the phlog is the most hated weapon anymore. That title probably belongs to either the scorch shot or……yeah I can’t think of any others

What I’d like to personally recommend: this isn’t the easiest thing to pull off BUT if your enemy is just out of phlog range, switch to your scorch shot for a free mini crit (if you’ve managed to catch them on fire for the moment you had) and to slow them down, then with that split second you have switch back to phlog and burn them down. I will not overstate the need to close that gap is fucking everything, especially if you are not running powerjack (I say because I run homewrecker). If you have no medic (for some ungodly reason) it might be a safe bet to pair up with a soldier with the conch or a scout with mad milk, OR if you are feeling particularly evil, pair up with a sniper running the Sydney sleeper or maybe jarate, if he’s running huntsman and flanking, or again, a soldier with buff banner, because fire mini crits and even afterburn mini-crits are nothing to scoff at, and with a buff banner soldier you’ll get a good speed boost like with powerjack. Some team communication will maximise this weapon’s potential.
Maining phlog for awhile taught me how to surf at the next level. Activating Mmmph than hitting the perfect surf to close distance and melt a soldier is a huge dopamine rush.(like this 5:08) It's more satisfying than air-blasting IMO.
