Geezer Butler (bassist) was an absolutely brilliant songwriter. The lyrics are about the depths of depression. This is a special song to me because it was played at the funeral of one of my high school friends who ended his own life in the 11th grade. I'm 61 now and was just a little girl when they burst on the scene, but I'm completely drenched in their music since I grew up listening to whatever my older sister was playing. Geezer was a slap bassist, and I think that's what you're referring to. In War Pigs, he really lays down some insane flying finger gymnastics. Enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole of BS.
Saw their farewell tour a few years ago in Phx...sounded just as good....amazing!! And Ozzy is the most gracious performer I've ever seen. Concert was over, people pouring out of the venue...and he was still on stage thanking people for coming...
Best reaction EVER! NEVER have I heard anyone actually have sympathy or even recognize the Need within this song. Congratulations Young Man, You have a fantastic for life! Much Love and Peace to You n Your Family🌹
The Godfathers of Heavy Metal. Ozzy Osbourne was the lead vocalist for 10 or so years then he went on to a successful solo career. "Black Sabbath" was a horror movie from the early 60's.That's where they got their name. One of the members said "Is'nt it funny that people pay to watch a scary movie, why don't we make scary music "War Pigs" "Black Sabbath" "Changes" "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" "Never Say Die"
Another thing to appreciate about this track is that it was released in 1970...These guys are the OG founders of heavy metal AND grunge....No one was doing this at the time
@dmead4106 It wasn't considered grunge because grunge didn't exist until the late 80's 🙄 ....They were also not considered heavy metal either. They created a new sound that planted a seed in the darkest corner of the pop culture garden. In the mid/late 70s heavy metal flowers started to sprout. And a little later on, grunge flowers started to sprout in the late 80s Hope this analogy was able to help your struggle wrapping your mind around my original post. Let me know if you need further clarification
@robotoad72 Correct, I never said I did. my first was black Sabbath. I got that in 71. paranoid in 72 have both o.gs on the table right now. Don't let facts hurt your feelings.
Drummer Bill Ward had a jazz background that allowed him lay back play off the rhythm of the mammoth guitar riffs, plus he had the chops to throw in monster fills. Truly a pioneer.
This is the music i grew on and nothing today comes close close to Black Sabbath. The guitarist tapping the strings was a thing Eddie Van Halen was known for but it started with Black Sabbath.
Iron Man, Wizard, and Black Sabbath are great choices. The song, Black Sabbath, is a must for playing in a haunted house if you want to frighten children and adults 😉😊
Bro, you reminded me of the first time I heard it so long ago. So cool to see a young guy loving this music, as I know the torch will be carried. Peace.
Love your reactions... I must say that your comments are on the money most of the time. Sabbath has been my go to all time favorite band for forty some odd years, and if your looking for everything in one song, than go no further then "Hand of Doom/Rat Salad"; by far the pinnacle of all Sabbath songs IMHO.
If I could bottle your enthusiasm Shon I'd own this planet 😂 Thanx for the reactions, I get a kick out of you reacting to songs I've enjoyed for many years and sometimes decades 🤘🏼
I first heard the "make a joke and I will sigh you will laugh and I will cry, happiness I can not feel and love to me is so unreal" lines from the Sega Megadrive game Rings Of Power. So powerful.
This, and rush and floyd and zeppelin.....we grew up with this. Showing the new generation this....helps me see what I proably took for granted when it was just the norm.
First concert i ever seen, Sabbath...1978 Houston, Van Halen was the opener. My generation was blessed with witnessing some of the best music/bands of all time to this point. Awesome reaction Shon, wish you could have been around to see it in person.
Aaaaaaah... Shon, you're liking the pioneers of Heavy Metal. Welcome to the crazy bunch of metalheads. The genre has definitely evolved and grown since Black Sabbath, but they were the first.
I gotta be honest man, it's cool to see black Americans listen to this kind of rock.. They had no idea what they been missing... we been trying to tell black America for years to give a shot, just listen to all those bands in the 70s... Just do it...
Rage against the machine - BULLS ON PARADE Rage against the machine - BULLS ON PARADE Rage against the machine - BULLS ON PARADE Rage against the machine - BULLS ON PARADE
Black Sabbath will do this to you…I discovered Black Sabbath for myself after already listening to Ozzy Osbourne solo records and heard Paranoid for the first time on AM radio in the mid-late 1980’s. I knew it was Ozzy right away though Black Sabbath had a completely different sound from solo Ozzy. It is 2023 and I still can’t get enough of Black Sabbath:)
Best band ever! Just pick a song and work your way down their play list and I will be here for every one of those experiences with you. All the stuff with Ozzy and then you get the double bonus of a few albums with Ronnie Jame Dio and one with Ian from Deep Purple on vocals. Let's do this!
Its actually a dubbed in poor quality solo in the middle. Thats the way the album version was produced in 1969. Just 1guitarist, the infamous tony iommi. My favourite song by them is probably hand of doom or symptom of the universe which was a pre cursor to thrash metal a decade before metallica dropped
Great reaction Dude! I grew up with this music and played drums in venues to Black Sabbath songs and your reaction really warms my heart Brother from another Mother 😂 you get it and it makes watching your channel that much Awesome!
I'm so glad you discovered this song, but I'm also glad it wasn't your FIRST Black Sabbath song! It's a great song, and definitely their most famous one, but not so representative of their sound. I hear you started out with "War pigs", I hear: excellent! That's a very good starting point, now you could move on to anywhere you like on the Black Sabbath trail and not be confused. Great that you appreciated the lyrics! Geezer Butler is not only one of THE most influential bassists ever (that groove, man! That groove!!), but also one of the most poignant lyricists in popular music history. Without a doubt. As you're probably aware, original Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne is also a legend in his own right, so I definitely recommend that you also check out A) his solo material, and B) the material that Black Sabbath have done with their other singers through history. They have released albums with five singers altogether, the other four being Ronnie James Dio (another LEGEND in his own right), Ian Gillan (another LEGEND in his own right), Glenn Hughes (another LEGEND in his own right) and, last but not least, Tony Martin. Unlike the others, Martin has not achieved major fame from his other works besides Black Sabbath, but the five albums he made with the band are bona fide cult classics and illustrations of his superlative talents as a singer, multi-instrumentalist and lyricist. Not so much in the US, where Black Sabbath sadly faded into obscurity from the early 80s, but overseas, definitely, and his reputation happily just keeps on growing. All these different singers brought something of their very own to Black Sabbath, making their respective eras less than cherished by many Ozzy purists, but for those who simply appreciate top tier heavy metal, there is not one album released under the Black Sabbath monicker that does not deliver.
The truth is they needed a last song for the album and threw this together with thrown together lyrics. Turned out to be so bad ass that it became the title track for the album. I'm pretty sure you'll love every song on the album. Iron Man is a freaking riot and kind of a standard on par with this and War Pigs. Hand of Doom is tough and nasty, Fairies Wear Boots is hilarious, and Planet Caravan is just a wild trip set to a cool jazz groove. They are all hits, even Rat Salad which is a drum/guitar jam with no lyrics
My story of first hearing OZZIE/ Black Sabbath goes back to the mid 70s while reading a Marvel Iron Man comic book then hearing the song IRONMAN com on the radio just blew me away !!! some one was sing about the comic book ! then the movie came out in 2008 ! worth the wait ! just awesome ! Please do IRONMAN NEXT
Next by Black Sabbath: "Iron Man." Note that Ozzy was eventually replaced as the lead singer by Ronnie James Dio (who's also phenomenal.) Ozzy went on to have a solo career, and produced many great hits after leaving Black Sabbath.
Song Suggestions: Skee Lo - I Wish Skid Row - 18 And Life, I Remember You, Youth Gone Wild Smashing Pumpkins - Today, 1979, Cherub Rock, Tonight Tonight, Thirty-Three Smile Empty Soul - Bottom Of A Bottle Sophie B Hawkins - Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover Soul Asylum - Runaway Train Soul For Real - Candy Rain, Every Little Thing I Do Soul II Soul - Back To Life Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun, Fell On Black Days The Spill Canvas - All Over You
You should check out their self-titled track, off their self-titled first album. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath. It starts slow, but builds up, and nobody had ever heard anything like it on the radio before. It was the literal start of "Heavy Metal".
Shon, its not related to this song (at all), but i REALLY want you to check out Father & Son by Cat Stevens. Also Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin is great. Thanks!❤
Metallica is my favorite band, literally dozens of bangers but if you aren't ready to open that can of worms, check Rage Against the Machine, or Pantera

Hey Shon, I'm dropping off another suggestion, if interested. George Benson - On Broadway (Live)" (channel: George Benson) --George Benson is an American singer and songwriter. He began his professional career at the age of 19 as jazz a guitarist. He was a former child prodigy; Benson first came to prominence in the 60's singing soul and jazz music with some very prominent and well-established jazz bands. He then, launched a very successful solo career. He alternated between jazz, soul and R&B often and touched a large audience of loving fans... and here's another suggestion for another song by BS, if interested. "Black Sabbath - Changes" (channel: Black Sabbath) --This song is from their "Vol. 4" album released in 1972 the music was composed by (guitarist) Tony Lommi and the lyrics were penned by (bassist) Geezer Butler.
Shon is ABSOLUTELY the best reactor on UA-cam!! Best insights and almost always on point with the lyrics!!!! Peace
This song is 55 years old!!! How can such a fresh sound be older than me!

good point, Penny!
Crazy how Ozzy could sing Clear but couldn't talk for nothing!! Lol
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you.

@robotoad72 we called it heavy metal in the 70s .Get out some magazines . . But leave it to the 90s to change to your facts .
@dmead4106 Sure you did...just not in 1970 when this was released
@robotoad72 Correct, I never said I did. my first was black Sabbath. I got that in 71. paranoid in 72 have both o.gs on the table right now. Don't let facts hurt your feelings.

Great hob as usual. I was 12 or 13 in 1976. I was in my sisters room and this was on the turntable so I listened and it changed my life.
No bad songs from black sabbath. Very rare that I love every song on an album.
