I keep coming back to this performance. It is genuinely magic
Love Mary ....
In my heart there is no other singer who can make it soar!
When someone asks for a demo of my “funny-looking” speakers, this is the song I play (from the original CD). Amazing voice and great recording.
I have seen Mary Black many times. This was the first song she sang the first night I saw her live at the Birchmere. She is the epitome of class. She is kind and warm in person. She NEVER disappoints! Sings with feeling and passion. Love her!
Her song leaves the dieing on the streets of dublin outside of 1970s . sinead o'connor but nothing conpares to you.
A beautiful song, beautifully performed. What more can you ask?
Saw her at Portsmouth Folk Festival about twenty years ago, This song is a great favourite of mine, beautifully sung by Mary,She never received the aclaim her talent deserved , especially in England.
Many years ago I checked out a cassette tape (yes, a cassette tape!) from the library with a compilation of several songs. This song was on it. My life was changed after hearing it! One of my favorite all time songs! I saw Mary Black at a Bumbershoot concert in Seattle several years ago, and of course she sang this song. Such an ethereal song, and every time I hear it i am touched...
Mary singing Noel Brazil.........it just doesn't getting any better than this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no one to compare with Mary...par excellence...
Everytime I hear this song I think of my little bungalow tucked away in the hills of San Francisco listening to KKSF. Was a wonderful time in my life. Cheers to you.
I know the feeling. From August 1987 to May 2009 KKSF was my favorite station. I lived in the East Bay at the time. Had a new girlfriend and a new station (KKSF) that gave me some old and new musicians to listen to. That quite possibly was the happiest time in my life. I no longer have that girlfriend. I no longer live in the Bay Area. And sadly, no more KKSF...
I remember this song on that station also! Great memories.
Wondering IF it is in the same neighborhood of mine? There I TOO once listened to KKSF and still listen on CD to their Aids Relief Recordings... Anywhere near Laidley St??? Wink
Mary certainly deserved more acclaim. Beautiful singing and wonderful song.
So many images so beautiful!
wow--the mystic, magical beauty of the Irish
Since I was here 7 years ago, Mary Black has retired from solo performance. Her last was here in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall. In her keenly magnanimous way, she acknowledged the street people living in their tents just outside on the sidewalks. The next day, she and her brothers Shea and Michael, who live here in San Francisco, attended the monthly concert on the Hyde Street Pier on the Eureka, an historic paddle wheel steamboat. Mary will be sorely missed.
Oh, my heart! When Mary opens her mouth to sing, I am transported to another and better place. This is simply superb music, with the ability to move the heart and soul. I have loved you for a long time, now, Mary, and still one of your greatest fans.
one of my all time favorites... So moving.
Was introduced to this song by the local jazz station long since gone. It's truly haunting and gets more than a few plays on my playlist.
KKSF San Francisco... was my favorite station now long gone. Introduced me to so many great songs and artists... Mary being one of them. Their Sampler CD's are the best.
I too got introduced to this song on a local contemporary jazz station back in the early 90's. I loved the beautiful and haunting quality of this song the very first time I heard it.
Una voce incantevole che scopro solo ora e che ascolto in ogni momento !
Absolutely move your soul to another dimension. So beautiful as she is herself. Thanks mam, IV been listening to her since I was in my your tummy. Thanks mam.
Saw her at Hammersmith and the Albert hall, fantastic voice and timing, should have been a superstar
This song has haunted me for so many years, since Mary first recorded. It was one of her major "cross-over" pieces back then. It got a lot of radio air play. I've enjoyed seeing her here in San Francisco in recent years.
Love Mary Black...she puts so much heart and depth into all her songs.
Saw her live along the riverfront in Boston. Absolute magic.❤
so beautiful .. years & years of astonishing music. what an artist .. what a gift for us all ..
beautiful song, i knew noel brazil , he is missed. great songwriter and very funny person.
A lot of us living in the Bay Area also miss KKSF and the great music they used to play like this song.
beautiful song 1 beautifully sung! forgotten how much she strokes your soul!
THERE IS NO ACCOUNTING FOR POOR TASTE . MARY BLACK EXUDES CLASS , STAR QUAILTY AND DIGNITY
I think Mary Black is the most honest, non-bullsh*t singer I have ever heard, with the possible exception of Eva Cassidy.
Years ago I used hear this song on a smooth jazz station in my area 103.7 KKSF.
Same here, such beautiful music.
Wonderful live version of one of my favourite songs, full of grace!
I still listen to the album this came on. Not a bad track on it. It's a treasure. What an amazing voice.

Your all a bunch of absolute wanders!
@@petehull6256 Always thought she had a great voice. Some great album releases especially, By the time it gets dark. Never got to see her live, hopefully someday. Keep singing Mary!
Yesterday I`ve been in Concert in Bochum.
Absolut fantanstic. Great singer.
Fantastic song. Fantastic singer.
Очень необычно...Прекрасный голос."Сolumbus" была первой песней Мэри Блейк в моём плейлисте.
beautiful song, and beautifully sung.... ive always loved it since i first heard it way back when...
10+ dislikers can't dream of Columbus.
😂
Beautiful, sublime, enchanting work.
... and he would have been very proud of how his nice song has been treated here during this concert. No need for 3 Guiness-es to imagine him, lying somewhere on a fluffy cloud, looking at the stage through the roof, and nodding approvingly....
Star quality ? What is that supposed to mean exactly ? The latest tattoo, the latest tricks from esthetic "corrections" to an "imperfect" body ? Some voices don't need all that, as they're the core of the beauty themselves... THIS is Music with an "M" !
Makes me cry
So moving. Wonderfully written song, beautifully delivered.
Man that was sweet!
beautiful voice !
Interesting key changes in that song and some nice dissonances too
Beautiful
This song inspired Jimmy Buffett to include it on his final album.
Better keep your distance from this whale
Better keep your boat from going astray
Find yourself a partner and treat them well
Try to give them shelter night and day
'Cause here in this blue light
Far away from the fireside
Things can get twisted and haunted and crowded
You can't even feel right
So you dream of Columbus
Every time the panic starts
You dream of Columbus
With your maps and your beautiful charts
You dream of Columbus
With an ache in your traveling heart
See how the cormorant swoops and dives
Must be some thrill to go that deep
Down to the basement of this life
Down to where the mermaid gently sleeps
Not like here in this blue light
Far away from the fireside
Where things get twisted and haunted and crowded
You can't even feel alright
So you dream of Columbus
Every time the panic starts
You dream of Columbus
With your maps and your beautiful charts
You dream of Columbus
With an ache in your traveling heart
And as tide must ebb and flow
I am dragged down under
And I wait the livelong day
For an end to my hunger
So I dream of Columbus
Every time the panic starts
I dream of Columbus
With my maps and my beautiful charts
I dream of Columbus
And there's peace in a traveling heart
I dream of Columbus...
timeless music
Incredible.
beautiful
very nice! thx!
Not sure if I like this one better or David Crosby's. It's such a great song either way.
have to say, i much much much prefer her singing this beautiful song without the flourishes she put on it here, this song is so beautiful and her original base singing was what made it so memorable. cmon mary.
Absolutely agree, the album version with her simple vibrato was perfect. Along with the wonderful instrumentation that is with that epic cello!
yes, album version is a perfection, it's got weight to it, it's got drama, this version feels in a wrong mood, wrong key almost, frustrating
Dont forget this is a live version and at a time (2003) when Mary's voice started to change and possibly decline due to wear and tear. She was magical in her day however
My love Tom Connelly
💔❣️🍀🔥🌊🐚🌊
Mary do you have any videos/recordings of Noel?.
Mary, you are one of the best. Love your voice and in this video, very beautiful looking. However I don't think the short hair as I have seen you in of late does not suit you. Please grow it back and capture the eyes of men with not only your voice. 🇺🇸
Itunes buy a bloody CD or LP for fucks sakes!
the original was so much powerful, this goes into a sleaze tempo, Bring it back Mary.
For someone ... "with no star quality"..., she sure has been earning a good living off of her axiomatically implied lack of talent, in your statement, for quite a few decades now.
Personally, I love her music and have purchased quite a bit of it over the years.
