No Frontiers
(Jimmy McCarthy)
If life is a river and your heart is a boat
And just like a water baby, baby born to float
And if life is a wild wind that blows way on high
Then your heart is Amelia dying to fly
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
And if life is a bar room in which we must wait
'Round the man with his fingers on the ivory gates
Where we sing until dawn of our fears and our fates
And we stack all the deadmen in self addressed crates
In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day
When fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its way
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
If your life is a rough bed of brambles and nails
And your spirit's a slave to man's whips and man's jails
Where you thirst and you hunger for justice and right
Then your heart is a pure flame of man's constant night
In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day when fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its way
And heaven has its way
When all will harmonise
And know what's in our hearts
The dream will realise
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
I bought my eldest daughter a song book with songs from the singing of Mary Black. I got it signed in a record store in Belfast. I told Mary Black my daughter was also a beautiful singer. It is my daughters Birthday today. She is as beautiful as Mary Black. Irish Coleen look.Dark hair, fair skin. She can still sing.So can my daughter.Married now with children of her own.Life goes so very fast. That day Mary Black said to me to tell my daughter to keep singing. The last concert we saw Mary Black live was in Derry. Both my daughters and i.Mary Black sang "Sonny" she lost the lyric. Offcourse we knew exactly were she was and prompted. She was back on track but we kept singing. ☘
What a beautiful voice, your timing is absolutely perfect, and your pretty face melts my heart. You should be on the world stage. Lots of love from Ireland ❤️
How many people sing this song and yet dont listen to the lyric .Jimmy Mc Carthy truely knows how to write beautiful lyrics and tell a story at the same time .then its handed over to Mary where she wraps her emotions around it and shares the voice of her heart with us .
Beautiful comment. I have Jimmy mccartys songbook always in my sitting room x

@Codarsnacht So true mate! My mother used to play this in the car all the time, it just defines my childhood growing up in rural Donegal
@hunnibunni7000 - One of the few songs that consistently sends shivers up the back of my neck everytime I hear it - sung by Mary Black that is - the version on her album is actually even more amazing than this video. It's always felt to me to be about finding the courage to move through our doubts, fears, real-world tragedies or self-inflicted illusions, whatever life throws at us she's saying we can transcend, she can see it in our eyes even if we don't. Convincing me every time!

4:16 Sept 25, 2024 There has never been, in all the beautiful, haunting, magical songs from Ireland, another song to compare to the sentiment, delivery and songwriting skill in Kieran Goss’s Reasons to Leave.
This was posted under Kieran’s site, came up on Mary Blacks.
Actually written about, and for, his mother Betty. An amazing woman who saw everything as being possible. AFAIK she actually learned to fly long before most women would dream of such a thing. Hence the reference to Amelia (Earhart). If you listen to the words you will hear a lot of 'motherly' references.
i love marys voice from this era, her stuff now sounds different, not sure i like it... love this stuff though, could stay listening to it all day
