      AI generated content is a tool, i agree that you can use it to some degree, but there are already games out there that use them exclusively and idk what it is, but you can tell right at the spot that something wasn't created by a human - it just feels synthetic.
      I think AI is good for marking out things quick and easy, but if it comes to Art, i always prefer human made things - that's already the case with music, you just can tell somehow how much of music was generated, and how much was actually played by humans - i can't quiet nail it what exactly gives it away, maybe some sort of uniformity, and it's not always "obvious", but it's always noticeable - i did hear into AI music without knowing, i did test myself, it's always something off with it! (even if the groundlaying work was actually human, like in classical music - hard to tell there, but still noticeable it's not an actual orchestra playing it.)
      And even if you doubt that and for most ppl that might be indistinguishable, it still influences perception of ppl - and while art always was kinda superficial, AI is super superficial, as shown in many tests already - AI generated content overexaggerates things even more than artists already do - if we let that happen, we propably end up in an even more superficial world than we're already in rn! (truth is, humans never stop learning - ofc, playing a shooter doesn't automaticly makes you a killer irl, but trown into a similar situation, you'll having less trouble pulling the trigger - the Army isn't using videogames for training without quantifyable success! ;-) - what we consume influences us, it might not define us as that's much more complicated, but it definitively has some effect on us - what effects exactly is individual, i sometimes enjoy shooters to steam off, other times i have no interest in them as their mechanics are often to blunt and simple to me - point&click is not exactly the most satisfying thing for me, if any i like games that avoid it as much as possible, ironicly with automating things - i love building stuff, using my brain to solve problems, that's what i enjoy the most, be it irl or in games, i just can't stop thinking about solutions!^^ - just occasionally i want to steam out that destructive nature of us, and i'm very glad we have videogames to do it! :-) - but i also noticed how playing a shooter, especially competitive, does in fact aggrovate me - nowadays i focus on coop or team based, and ofc build the conscious around that the opposite team isn't my enemy, in fact some are playmates/"gaming friends" and we simply love challenging eachother, but a young person doesn't have that consciousness yet, that's why especially competitive games (not just shooters, but those especially as it's around "killing" eachother opposed to a.e. a racing game - but it's there too, that damn player that pushed you off the track, payback time! ;-) - it's just provoking toxic reactions, doesn't mean someone has to react toxic, as said, you can percieve it as a challenge to get better next time, but it needs that mindset, and i experienced how games changed that both for the better and the worse for me back in the day, it's just a two sided sword, and i think we have to deal more conscious with both of them and not let AI take over parts of it! (not in a "skynet" sense, but in a "lazy dev doesn't care" sense!) - games are a highly influential media, just like movies and shows - time to address that, not stepping even further away from those facts and pretend it wouldn't, ignoring what we found out so far and let nefarious interest groups use it against us, to at best syphon even more money out of our pockets, or worse, promote political agendas, like already happens openly on Facebook! - ppl are already getting influenced, and chose to ignore it. - it's dangerous because ppl are ignorant, not because the tech is faulty, but the usage! - to make myself clear, i'm not for "banning" AI generated content, but for marking it, or rather to promote actual artists more! ;-)

    This game looks like it will have some depth to it, with so much to do and keep track of. Heading out on the surface and scanning the landscape not knowing what you'll find, fascinating twist. Have to wonder if there are richer minerals deposits to discover and mine on the surface. Your narration as you play makes its truly enjoyable and engaging to watch.

    So i mentioned on episode 2 there was a very nice thing in the tech tree, and as you havnt mentioned it, or even looked at it, i will give the spoiler now. It is the Multi regolith refinery. You can send all of the regolith from any mine into it and it will produce all 4 things and slag from the regolith you provide. When i played the demo i built 1 of those and built a regolith storage before it and sent all mines into the storage, the multi regolith refinery will produce the oxides according to the % that is mined, so even if you just send the silicon mine into the multi refinery, you get 50% silicon and 6% iron, 5% titanium and so on. If (like me) you send the iron, silicon and titanium that you mine into the machine, then you get the most out of the machine as some of the regolith is high in each resource and low in others, so you end up with about 40% of all resources being produced at 1 machine instead of 50% from 3 machines. You also get less slag out as now you are using 70%+ of the regolith rather than 50%. This helps you to get the most out of the miners. And helps to tidy up all the belts, and lowers the cost of upgrading the machine as now you only have to upgrade 1 machine rather than upgrading all of the single regolith refineries as you was doing.
    Shame you didnt mention it in this play through, but hey ho. Loving this game and cant wait for it to come out.

    Thank you for presenting us with this cool game, it as the potential to have a fat playlist , since there so much this game as to offer. 80% of gamers not love to read. so agree on having actors to read for the gamer and viewer , rather then reading a text. as for the war part, i think it will be fun to see at least a base deffence ,from rival or natural phenomes. not making it a other CLAH OF CLANS , as you login you lost most of your resources and progress , that a game killer. at least a way to daylie bubble up for those less in the war aspect. And to those that crave for a even more realistic moon servival experiance, having the avatars get close and start a family to grow your colonie, adding the diffrent needs if they do, like separate quaters , homes ect.. hope this project keeps growing and great job CHARLIE in offering us a glimps of this game on your channel. ho ya we need to have a avatar call STEVE ROGERS , this dude is a serviver (reff. hospital wards).

I work in the field of AI, and so appreciate the usage of it and the huge potential for making quality game dev more accessible to smaller budgets. Quality of assets will only get better with time, but for now I agree that in a final/polished product I expect more than the current level of audio content. Good points at the end... Some games takes several years to create, especially with a small studio. And from planning to developing to full release, the story and dialogue might and probably will change a lot. Maybe some lines gets changed, added or removed all together, and it would be a waste of time, money, and effort for an indie studio to hire someone do do snippets of lines over a multi year period, and what if the voice actor in question quits or has an incident that don't allow them to continue with your project?
    I fully support your reasoning. Let them fully focus on the game mechanics, like some of the issues you encountered during game play.
    Then when the game is done, and all the dialogue lines are finalized... THEN hire voice actors who can voice it all in bulk and then add it to the finished game.

    Great series and good exposure to a new game. I can see why early release to influencers is valuable to game developers. I disagree with your comments on AI however. If there can be more interaction with characters and more voiced dialogue I think this is a great use of AI saving the voice actors for cut scenes etc. The dream would be that the dialogue is all AI generated again with no two play throughs the same. AI generated NPCs has to be the next step forward in game design. Especially if you can change the main NPCs characteristics as a game setting. Superficial customization of your character is one thing. Having super sassy advisors would be a far more enjoyable twist to gameplay.

    I am super pro-AI. It is the future and, as you said, it has come to stay and is not going anywhere!
    That said, AI opens the opportunity to really finetune your assets without artistic "interference", that goes with voice acting too.
    In the near future, we will even see games where all spoken lines and artwork will be totally unique in each copy - generated by AI.
    This is a paradigm shift, and the only votes that count, are the peoples wallets.

    Can't wait for the full game to come out. This demo definitely leaves you wanting more. I personally have reservations about the further advancement and use of AI. I'm not convinced that it couldn't be used negatively against society. I don't trust that it couldn't be harmful. Be it economically with people losing jobs, or worse. I guess I'm just leary of it. Those are just my thoughts. 🤷‍♂️

    • @CharliePryor
      @CharliePryor  6 місяців тому +7

      Can you think of any advancement in technology that cannot also be used negatively against others? Pretty much every advancement comes with stuff like that. Tech is just tech. People use it. As long as people use it, it’ll be people to blame.
      … but AI does change things slightly, since it’s the first time tech has the ability to write its own actions and learn on its own. I get it. - but that kind of AI, what you’re talking about, is AGI (general intelligence). This sort of use in games… isn’t that.
      And the tech that “steals jobs” makes way for new ones. People get displaced if they don’t adapt. The entirety of humanity survives on adaptation. There were a lot of people worried about jobs when the assembly line became a thing too. Digital media wrecked brick and mortar video stores, etc. The world moves on.

    When it comes to AI generated assets I fully agree with you on it's use while in early development as long as the intention is to have the finished product ship with fully original material and not taking the short cut low cost approach. This game is on my Steam wishlist(I had Steam loaded and hit the button 10mins into your first episode of this 😂) but I'm with you, if it goes to release with AI generated assets still in place, I will not be buying it.
    By far the biggest issue I have with this technology is down to the data sets. Imo every AI art, music and TTS currently deployed that can't prove every scrap of data shoved into their data sets isn't just ripped with zero permission should be shut down. Regardless how advanced these AI tools get it is still spitting out a mash up of what it has been fed. It's not true artificial intelligence with actual imagination going on. It's merely a convincing illusion that it's creating actual new material only possible because of the volume of data it's ripping from. Personally I don't even agree with calling these tools AI. That's a marketing bs label. They're advanced machine learning not even close to actual AI and honestly this direction of machine learning is potentially even a step in the wrong direction. It's muddied the waters as to what is just a huge data set fed algorithm vs actual artificial intelligence capable of original thought and creativity.

    Agreed on the use of AI voices IN Early Developement/Beta, & hire actors for final recording just before Release versions.
    As an author, i have edited and revised books even after publication! To pay a voice actor in early development MAKES NO SENSE. After a beta, for Release, sure, in that window, the scripts should be pretty much final, many of them enough to hire someone to record. Except the last adds and revisions for release, which could be handled in the contracts in the way "reshoots" are in the flm industry.
    Seems like a normal business practice. Carry on.

    I can see some of the positives of the AI argument, especially as a place holder for voice acting, once the story and script are complete.
    But how do you feel about games that are never complete? (MMORPG's). In the past I've been drawn to playing these games, which on release are full feature, voice acted stories, but as the story progresses, the voice acting is dropped, the developer is paying for story writers, and new game assets, and release pressure can result in the "less necessary" aspects of the experience dropping by the wayside. The result, a year or two in, is that the game is no longer the polished, high feature experience that you were drawn to, and you notice the increasing drop in game population. Most of my experiences with these types of games were before the AI-age, but I find myself drawn to the next shiny experience. I agree that a complete game should be willing to spend the money on real actors, but I'm less sure about games that are continually evolving with a breakneck development cycle.

    • @CharliePryor
      @CharliePryor  6 місяців тому

      To each's own, I say. I'm not somebody that 'demands they use real actors' in order to have a good time with the game. That's for other people to get angry about, as far as I'm concerned. I focus on what I'm good at, and interested in: A strategically interesting game that has a plethora of engagements and features that allow me to have fun playing it. No one element, especially one I care little about, will ruin it for me. If the game brings you fun, then have fun with it. -- I don't play MMOs really, so I can't speak for that sort of thing, but I would say some of those worlds are enormous, and expecting a constantly evolving game to have diverse, human voices, is a stretch. Most massive games that use voice actors with hundreds of characters, end up having the same 10 or so voice actors for everyone anyways. (refernce Skyrim to see how diverse that is... the same guy voices over 100 characters in that world)

    Regarding the AI lecture, ditch the hectoring tone. Lose the condescension. And don't use players with disabilities to bolster your argument. Of course voice actors and most game artists are on their way out, as will be the role of most conventional programmers. This last GDC felt like a wake. Fewer and fewer people will be needed to develop games. And perhaps they'll have fewer bugs and won't be required to carry a label noting that AI was used to create the game. But this was a good gameplay walk-through series. Many thanks!

    Here's a hot take on AI. It doesn't matter what any of us think about it it's not just going to happen but it's also going to bring prosperity. Prosperity?! - I hear you cry. Yes, prosperity.
    Point out any invention that replaced workforce in human history that ultimately did NOT either elevate the civilisation or improve the lives of her citizens. And before you bring up weapons technology, let me first point out that it's not the category we're talking about, and an assumption on it causing more destruction is only applicable when it's used. Nuclear weapons in this sense have contributed to world peace more than all peace summits put together throughout human history.

    If AI is good enough, so not a robot monotonous tone... I'm fine with it. Voice actors will be obsolete in the near future and become niche. It's just the way it is. Just like most writers... especially the less talented ones.
    Game looks very cool! Hope they bring ge game over the finish line.

      IDK about obsolete… but it will force them/us to be better. You’ll have to present value that surpasses tech, just like every other industry. I don’t see AI completely replacing the human element in art, but rather, weeding out the less talented, and opening the way for a new way of approaching the creation of art into the future, raising the standards humans have to meet.

    The use of AI generated images, while it is great for early access games with limited funds actually hurts artists in the long run. AI generated images are built off already existing pictures of real people and artwork created by artists. It absolutely is detrimental to people who own the rights to their likeness and the rights of the work artists have created. It would be akin to someone "borrowing" their neighbors lawn mower, without permission, to create their own lawn care business. If the early access game developers need images and voice work, they can ask the community to donate these items. There are people out there who would do that.

    • @CharliePryor
      @CharliePryor  6 місяців тому +11

      Your concepts are nice on paper, but don’t hold up in practice. “Asking people to donate” something takes significantly more time and resources than AI generation.
      In top of that, everyone learns off of other’s work. Nobody “owns the rights to their likeness” when it’s as generic as these are. That’s sorts like saying you own an idea. Not possible.
      Where it gets dicey is when such art is SOLD for profit, and resembles styling of art on display elsewhere. That can be a problem with humans too. Art theft and forgeries have been rampant throughout the world for centuries anyway. It can simply perpetuate more with technology.
      Instead of worrying about the unnamed artists that cannot be proven to have been harmed by a specific implantation of art in a video game, we really should be looking at what qualifying art should be immune to interpretations through recreations in style - because humans do this already, and we often praise when they do.
      Every artist worth anything, trained and studied the styles of others to develop their skills. That is encouraged and praised, and they even go as far as to require it when working in an educational environment; for example, one which the student pays to attend. The original artist of those works do not make any money when, for example, a university professor uses a Google-search rendering of their work to teach a class of artists that will develop off of that art. That’s just not how this standard works. The university profits heavily on that student’s education, aided by examples and training off of the work of others.
      Some things deserve protection. Others… it’s just too generic to somehow claim that the art is solely original and unique. Those instances, like in this game, aren’t something remarkable that should stop studios such as this from moving on with their projects with an improved demo.

    Dang, I had a feeling the characters were AI generated they just seemed very off and I disagree that it’s a net positive. Also, not a fan of the combat concept either. It doesn’t seem they even needed to use the AI if they could’ve just used text for the dialogue. Until the final release.

      Already explained why AI voices are better than just having text. Perhaps it doesn't matter to those who can see just fine and like to read, but the majority of people, especially those with sight issues, will appreciate it.

    The only thing that is going to matter is the quality of the end product. And AI isn't there *yet*. But it will be, and sooner than we think we will be playing games that are completely generated on the fly. You'll just load up Apple 'Game' and tell it to surprise you. Sure we will all doomsay,but our great grandchildren won't think twice about it. We will tell them about these days and it will be like an old timer talking about radio episodicals. There are adults alive today who have never watched broadcast television with 60% commercial breaks, just streaming services. Do we pity them?

    During development you do not need AI voice at all, or any voice.
    You just need the text and then you can hire voice actors to record it, once you have finalized the game text.
    There is NO reason to use AI anything, except to maximize profits.
    The use of AI to replace human work must NEVER be accepted, unless it is to replace something that was harmfull for a human to do.
    The more we let AI do things for us, the less work there will be for us, the more poor and homeless people we will have!

    I find all this anti-AI views really funny. Do those people oppose camera instead of painting stuff? Or using Photoshop? That took a lot of craftmanship from photography and also took even more work from many talented painters. What about game engines? Unity, Unreal engine and such took so much work from talented developers. Or 3D printers. And we can go even further, what about chainsaw?
    AI is just a tool. It have different workflow, often produces something that isnt finished product but takes less time. Its always paired with actual person with artistic vision, struggling to work with said tool to make what he wants to make. Sometimes that person is forced to pair it with different tool to get to finished state. But its still just a product. Simmilar to a Photoshop. And there would be no problem with keeping those AI assets in the full release, especially visual assets.
